Chapter 2

Getting Supplies

The next day Harry woke me up with a grin on his face. "Hey time to go Chloe! Hagrid's already here, and you haven't even packed!" He walked over to the door, and turned to me again, "I'll be downstairs." And with that he left. After our conversation last night about our parents, Hagrid had told us he would be coming by today to take us to get our supplies for school.

Groaning I got out of bed, and slowly got dressed. Today is going to be interesting. I thought to myself as I looked into my closet. When I looked at my brother's side of the room, it was unusually clean. He had already picked up all of his clothes that were on the floor. He probably just threw them all in a backpack or something.

Behind me the door opened again. Harry came crashing through the doorway lugging a trunk with him. "I forgot to give you this. Hagrid said to put all your things in it." He said between breaths.

When he left the room again, I opened the trunk and looked inside. The inside was lined with a cream-colored cloth. There were pockets on the lid, and even a hidden compartment on the bottom. Well, this might come in handy. I thought with a smile.

After I finished packing, I walked to the door with my trunk, and looked back. Taking one last look at the room where my life had been so miserable, and I left feeling like my life was finally about to start.

Downstairs Harry was fighting with Uncle Vernon. Aunt Petunia looked like she was going to throw up and Dudley was hiding like a scared little puppy. Hagrid was saying, "Harry it's not up to him if you go or not." trying to defuse the situation.

Things were starting to get out of hand when Uncle Vernon started yelling, "NEITHER YOU NOR YOUR SISTER ARE EVER GOING TO LEAVE THIS HOUSE. YOUR PARENTS WERE ROTTEN PEOPLE AND WE WERE GOING TO MAKE YOU GUYS NORMAL!" I cleared my throat trying to get their attention. Quickly I realized that clearing my throat wasn't going to work, so I put myself between my brother and uncle. At this point I was no longer afraid of my uncle. Harry and I were going to a wizard and witch, which meant we would hold all the power.

"Get out of the way Chloe!" Harry said loudly.

"Harry let's just go. We can just walk out of that door with Hagrid." I said calmly.

"Well he…" Harry started.

"I don't care what he said, it doesn't matter anymore. We are about to learn everything we were meant to." With that I looked at Hagrid and said, "Can we go now?"

"Yes, let's get going. We have a lot of things to do." He replied hurriedly.

I walked past Hagrid and motioned with my hand for Harry to follow. Once outside I looked at the green lawn, and the perfect garden. I felt Harry next to me and heard Hagrid trying to say goodbye to our uncle and aunt. Sighing, I turned to tell him that there was no use saying anything to them when he walked out. They would never understand, and I didn't care about their thoughts or feelings anymore.

"Right let's go." He said walking to the curb. He stuck out his right hand and there was a big BOOM. Parked on the side of the street in front of Hagrid was a triple decker bus. Hagrid turned to us and said, "Well come on! If we don't leave now, we ain't ever going to be done shopping for your things."

On the bus Harry and I saw that it was filled with seats with differently dressed people. Some wore pointy hats, and others bright colored robes. I stared around feeling out of place in my regular jeans and t-shirt. We sat near the front, and the bus lurched forward. The bus drove around like crazy, barely missing other cars and buildings. After a while I noticed that the only reason we weren't hitting anything was because everything in the path of the bus jumped out of the way before it could make contact with it. I had to clutch my stomach to stop myself from puking.

Within ten minutes were reached our destination. Hagrid told us to get up and get our things while he went to speak to the driver, soon we were ready to get off. He handed the driver some silver coins and walked off the bus. Harry and I followed him, dragging our luggage with us.

Looking at the building in front of us I started to doubt that we were going to get anything useful there. The outside was drab, and I didn't see a single person enter the building while we stood there. Hagrid smiled at us and opened the door. Inside turned out to be an inn, and bar of sorts. There were many people there, and it was hard to walk anywhere without hitting someone.

All of a sudden someone yelled, "IT'S THE POTTER TWINS!" and we were patted in back, and had our hands shaken by most everyone in the pub. Many people were saying things like, "Welcome back!" and "We missed you Mr. Potter, and Miss Potter." After the crowd died down a bit we started walking and people looked away as if they were afraid to look at us any longer than they already did.

Someone was staring at my brother and me. I could feel his eyes looking at my back. I turned to see who it was. A boy, he looked to be my age. He had gra,y eyes, and blond hair, and he held his body like he was superior to everyone else in the room. Within seconds our eyes locked. I felt blood rushing to my cheeks, and I quickly looked away. Maybe I'll see him later. I thought to myself as Hagrid led us to the barkeep.

"'Ello Tom."

"Ah, Hagrid, the usual?" Tom asked while cleaning out some cups.

"No, don't have the time. I just wanted to get these two checked in to their room." Hagrid said gesturing towards Harry and me. Tom glanced down at us and nodded.

"Right, for the Potters?"

"That would be correct."

"Up the stairs and to your right." Tom handed Hagrid a couple of keys that would let us into our room.

"Go on and put your trunks in your room then meet me in the back." Hagrid said turning to us and handing over the keys. I took my key and followed Tom's directions to our room.

The room was kind of dusty, but that didn't really bother me. There was only one bed, but Harry and I didn't mind sleeping together. Besides, it would only be until we headed off to school. I set my trunk down on the left side of the bed, Harry did the same on the right side. He glanced around the room before turning to me and grinning. I told him we should hurry back to Hagrid, and we rushed off to find the back of the pub.

The back of the pub was a brick wall, and Hagrid was standing there waiting for us. Great, I thought, we hit a dead end. I didn't wait to see or hear what Hagrid had to say and turned to go back inside when Harry grabbed my arm. Hagrid must have done something to the wall because it wasn't there anymore. Instead, there was a road leading into what looked like a bunch of little shops lined up. Witches and wizards were bustling about going in and out of the shops and talking to each other on the side of the road.

"Welcome to Diagon Alley." Hagrid said smiling at us.

"Whoa." Harry stated. I had to agree with him. Some of the shops had a wonderful smell, like baked goods and candy wafting out of them. Others were selling supplies for students like me.

We walked along the road looking inside windows when I thought of something. "Hagrid," I said getting his attention, "How are we to pay for our supplies?" I finished my question.

"Well why don't we go to the bank." Hagrid answered.

"Um, well we don't exactly have a bank account Hagrid." Harry pointed out.

"I know that! But what you don't know is that your parents had a bank account that they left to you two in their will. Half will go to you, and the other half to Chloe."

"Oh, well in that case let's get going." Harry gave me a smile.

"Wait," I said, "Is there any way we could split the account into two so that way we don't get the money mixed up." While I normally wouldn't mind sharing things with Harry, I felt like if our parents left us an equal amount of money, we better make sure it was split up correctly. After all, fair is fair.

"Don't worry about that Dumbledore already did split the account for ya." Hagrid said. Awesome, I thought to myself felling relieved.

We wandered through the streets, slowly making our way to the bank. It was hard to not stop at every shop window and look to see what was inside. When we finally got to the bank I was stunned. The outside was made out of marble with columns lining the walls, a set of white stairs led up to a set of burnished bronze doors. The doors were flanked by a goblin in a uniform of scarlet and gold. As we walked up the stairs, I heard Hagrid saying, "You'd be mad to rob it," 'It' meaning the bank.

"Why's that?" I asked curiously.

"It's heavily protected, the only other place safe for storing valuables would be Hogwarts."

We went through the bronze doors to find another set of doors inside. Here there was an inscription on the set of silver doors that read:

"Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn.
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours,
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there."

Through these doors, also flanked with goblins, was a vast marble hall long counters stretching along its length with doors leading off to the vault passageways with around a hundred goblins sitting at them.

"Hagrid what are those?" Harry asked gesturing to a creatures carrying and counting gold coins. I rolled my eyes, thinking the answer was obvious.

"Those are Goblins Harry. Nasty creatures they are, but we can trust them. Just don't get on their bad side." He answered.

Hagrid led us to a desk, and soon we were carted away through tunnels and over bridges. We stopped at a couple of doors, and a goblin opened one to reveal mounds of money. There were gold, silver, and bronze coins. "The gold coins are called Galleons, the silver are Sickles, and the bronzes ones are Knuts." Hagrid explained. "Also, there are 17 Sickles in a Galleon and 29 Knuts in a Sickle." This was my vault, and I grabbed a handful of each different kind of coin.

After we went to Harry's vault, there was one more vault to go to. "What's in there Hagrid?" I asked.

"Hogwarts business, very secret." He said simply.

After we left, we finally got to go to some stores. The first one was called Flourish and Blotts. Inside the walls were covered in books, hundreds and hundreds of books. I left Harry and Hagrid to look at the books on the right far wall. While I was browsing a book, I could feel someone looking at me. Wanting to find out who it was I looked up. It was the boy from the pub.

"Hello." I said politely, wondering why he was staring at me.

"You're Chloe aren't you." He said. It was more of a statement than a question.

"Yeah, and I hope you don't mind my asking, who are you?" I said smiling.

"My name is Draco Malfoy." He said returning the smile.

"Chloe!" said a voice. I recognized it quickly as Harry's.

"I'm sorry I have to go." I said quickly as I started to walk away. Harry was waiting for my carrying his books, and mine.

"Here are your books. Go pay for them, Hagrid and I will be waiting outside." He said handing me my new schoolbooks.

After I paid for the books, and we got some more supplies, I was starting to get hungry. "Hagrid, can we go get something to eat I'm starving." I said.

"Alright, then we'll go get your robes, and we have to get your wands too." He said.

We ate hamburgers and fries and had ice cream as a dessert. When we were with the Dursley's we were not allowed to eat out. If my uncle, aunt, and cousin were going out to eat, Harry and I were left with a babysitter. It made a nice change to be able to eat out with my brother. I scarfed down my food and leaned back in my chair feeling satisfied. A few minutes later, Harry and Hagrid were done eating as well and we walked to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions to be fitted. Inside there were racks and racks of different color, size and types of robes.

"Hogwarts students?" asked a lady as we entered the shop.

"Yes." I answered.

"Right this way." She said walking over to some stools. There was already someone there. That someone happened to be Draco Malfoy, the boy I briefly talked to in the bookshop.

"Please step up right here Miss." Madam Malkin said pointing to the stool next to Malfoy. She then walked away to get a robe for me to try on and get fitted.

"Hey." I said to Malfoy.

"I didn't expect to see you again until we were at Hogwarts." He said simply.

"Well maybe I should just leave then." I said annoyed at his arrogant voice.

"No don't do that. I was just didn't think we'd run into each other again. Lots of people come to Diagon Alley." He said quickly.

"Hmm well I might as well stay, I need the robes, and I can't exactly leave my brother." I said gesturing to Harry.

"So, you must be Harry Potter." Malfoy said to my brother.

"Yeah, seems like everyone know that." Harry said with a small glance in Malfoy's direction.

"Well, I'll see you two later. Perhaps we'll meet on the train." He said while getting off the stool and paying Madam Malkin.

"He's interesting." Harry said to me while Madam Malkin finished fitting us.

"I suppose he is." I replied. I could sense that Malfoy seemed to resent us for some reason, and I wondered why.

After we paid for our robes and told Madam Malkin thanks, Hagrid led us to Ollivander's Wand Shop. "Alright just walk in and get yer wands. I need to, uh, get something." Hagrid said walking away.

"I hope he isn't gone too long." I said to Harry as we walked inside the shop.

"Welcome Mr. and Miss Potter. I was hoping I would see you today." said a voice. I looked around to see who had spoken. It was an old man, he had white hair, that looked like it hadn't been combed in weeks, and his eyes were a dark shade of brown. He was standing behind a counter that was in front of shelves upon shelves of small, long boxes. I assumed these boxes contained the wands that Mr. Ollivander crafted.

"Sir, we are here to buy some wands." I said to Mr. Ollivander.

"Well let's get started." He said while pulling out some boxes. Both Harry and I went through about five wands before I found the one for me. As I waved it, wind gushed around, but it didn't break anything. I also felt a warm feeling rush up my right hand, the one I was using the wand with. It was almost like the wand was giving me a warm greeting.

"Ten inches, oak, unicorn hair, and slightly springy." Mr. Ollivander muttered as he wrote down some notes. He looked at me and smiled, "This wand has chosen you as its master."

"Urg none of these wands are working." Harry said frustrated as he continued to try wand after wand to no avail.

"I wonder, I wonder." Mr. Ollivander said as he walked looking at the boxes. He pulled out a box and handed it to Harry. Harry waved the wand, and the room was lit by welcoming light. "Curious. Very curious." Mr. Ollivander muttered as he took down some notes again.

"Sorry Sir, but what's curious?" Harry asked.

"That you should be destined for this wand when its brother gave you that scar." Mr. Ollivander said pointing at Harry's scar. Harry turned to me, and I shrugged. I suppose that could mean that Voldemort, the dark wizard who killed our parents, had the wand that Ollivander said was Harry's wands brother. I gave a look to Harry that meant we could ask Hagrid more about how Voldemort killed our parents and what that exactly meant.

We paid for our wands and waited for Hagrid outside the shop. When Hagrid walked up to us, he was carrying an owl. The owl was a snowy color with amber gold eyes. It stared at Harry and me as Hagrid said. "Happy birthday Harry and Chloe!" He handed the cage over to Harry, who carefully carried the owl back to our room in the Leaky Cauldron. Hagrid helped us get all our things in order, and told us he needed to leave.

"Wait, can we ask you a couple of questions before you leave?" I said hurriedly.

"I suppose I got time for one or two questions." Hagrid said, glancing at the clock. He sat down on the corner of our bed and waited.

"Mr. Ollivander said something in the wand shop that we weren't sure what it meant." I started to explain. "He said that Harry's new wand had a brother, and that brother wand gave Harry his scar."

"Hagrid, what does that mean?" Harry said, finishing my question.

"Well, I'm not sure I'm the right person to tell ya this, but here goes. The night your parents died, a dark wizard we call Who-Know-Who, went to yer house. No one really knows why he was targeting yer parents." Hagrid's eyes filled sorrow. "But yer parents died protecting the two of you, and for some reason when he turned to kill you two, his spell backfired, and he disappeared."

"Just like that?" I asked incredulously.

"No one knows exactly what happened. Professor Dumbledore might have a theory, but no one really knows."

"So, our parents died to protect us, and then when he tried to kill us, he wasn't able to? Is that why we are famous?" Harry asked as he leaned forward.

"Yes, Harry that is why so many witches and wizards know your names. You are the twins that lived and vanquished He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." He nodded as he finished his sentence. We sat in silence for a minute before Hagrid exclaimed when he saw what time it was.

"I'll be back September 1st." he said as he stood up to leave. "Don't get into any trouble and stay out of the muggle world." He left us to ponder everything we had learned.
