Buddy had gone to sleep on the bed he had made them while Surly sat looking out to the oak tree with a sigh. He almost had a chance to talk to Andie. Ever since the kiss they shared they shared on top of the old mill, he's been thinking about how he actually felt about Andie. He had know her for about a month now, and she was his best friend. He admitted her leader like personality and ability to figure things out impressed him. She was also the prettiest squirrel he's ever seen. But was what he felt about her really love? He definitely cared about her, and wants the very best for her. He didn't even know if she felt that way about him. Surly sighed and put his head in his hands. Thing were just so complicated these days. Then he perked his ears at the sound of paw steps scurrying near by. Looking up he saw a body moving in the dark down below and approaching the tree. Pressing his body against the trunk he was on, he peered down and squinted to see who it was.
"Surly, are you awake up there?"
Surly couldn't believe it, it was Andy. He had mix feelings about her coming to see him. On one side he really wanted to talk to her, but on the other he didn't want her getting in trouble. Looking over at Buddy, he was still asleep and Surly looked back down at Andie.
"Yeah I am. But Andie, what are you doing here? If Raccoon finds out…who knows what he might do."
"I know, I know…but I really needed to talk to you Surly."
Surly let out a sigh, he admitted he did too. He silently made his way down the tree, landing next to Andie. The two looked at each other awkwardly then turned away. Surly rubbed the back of his neck and looked back at Andie.
"Alright so, what do you got to say?"
Andie sighed and looked back at Surly. The moon was lighting up her green eyes in a beautiful way.
"Well first, who is that rat who is with you?"
Surly wasn't surprised she would want to talk about Buddy first. He was glad that's what she wanted to discuss anyway.
"Oh well, I found him in a garbage truck after I ended up getting thrown in myself. He had a cut on his foot and I couldn't just leave him there. He doesn't seem to have a name, or talk either. So I just call him Buddy. And he's been helping me out actually, he's not like any rat I've ever heard of."
Andie listened to Surly and tilted her head in thought.
"He doesn't look like how I imagined the rouge rats would. I guess he's alright. I mean he helped you rescued Grayson."
"Yeah he's really something…"
He said, looking back up at the tree. Andie watched Surly, and scratched the back of her ear.
"I also…wanted to talk about something else…"She said.
Surly looked over at her, and took a deep breathe. Here we go.
"I want to um…talk about the night at the old mill. When Grayson dared me to give you a kiss on the cheek. But it turned into an actual kiss.."
She grabbed her tail, brushing it nervously.
"I just wanted to ask you if…it really meant something."
Surly could feel the hair standing up on him everywhere. Why did he feel all nervous all of a sudden. He wasn't usually good at discussing his feels with people, but he really had no choice now.
"I..I'm not sure. I guess maybe it was just the heat of the moment."
Surly tried to think of something to say, his words weren't exactly coming out like he wanted. Andie looked at the ground, her ears dropping.
"I guess you're right."
She scratched the ground with her foot, feeling uneasy.
"But Surly, I was just thinking if… if it perhaps did mean something…how would you feel about it?"
She said, looking up at Surly. Surly could see the pink in her ears, and his own face felt hot too. He sighed, looking into Andie's eyes.
"Andie… you know how I feel about you. But I can't think about that kind of stuff right now…being banished and all."
Surly felt really bad about what he was saying, but he didn't want to give Andie any trouble if this would be something. Andie's expression didn't change, but he swore he could see a bit a pain in her eyes.
"I…I understand."
She said, looking away now.
"But hey, once this is over, I'd be happy to talk about this then."
He said, reaching out and taking her paw in his. Andie looked down at their paws and slowly pulled hers away.
"Yeah that sounds good."
She said, giving a faint smile. Then she walked up to him slowly and hugged him.
"I'm just glad you're ok."
She said, her cheek pressing against the side of his head. Surly let out a deep breathe and his arms held her close to him.
"Thanks Andie…and I'm sorry. For everything."
Andie hugged him a bit tighter before letting go and slowly turning away.
"See you around, Surly Squirrel."
She said, and with that, began to head back to the oak tree. Surly's shoulder drooped and he looked at the ground. Turning around he headed back up the tree and noticed Buddy was gone. He assumed he must have went out to get a drink or he saw him and Andie and decided he'd go somewhere to leave them in peace. Surly shrugged and got back onto his bunk and stared up at the starry sky. How was he ever going to figure out what he was feeling…?
