"No please Cara, don't sleep now. I've finally said it. Not the entire story though. But still, tell me something..."
It was useless, she won't wake up for the next hours.
"I'll be back." she said, aware Cara couldn't hear.
"Hey I've been looking for you! Where's Cara?"
"She's asleep. I'll bring her blankets."
"Asleep?!"
"I gave her something to heal and this is one of its effects."
"I didn't know you where a doctor, you're perfect my love."
He was about to hug her but she pulled him away.
"Later Richard, I need to get back there."
"Hey, Cara's a big girl, you don't have to worry that much for her."
"I don't care if she's a big girl. Whether she likes it or not, I'll be on her back 'til she feels better."
"Still I don't understand how she'd be injured..." Zedd said.
"Me neither." Kahlan lied. "And I bet she won't tell us."
"Yeah for sure. Doesn't mean I won't find out."
"Well good luck."
"Don't you want to know too?"
"I only need to know she's fine. She won't appreciate if I ask."
"Alright, I'll let you know if I've got some news."
Kahlan rolled her eyes and left.
"Wait, we can go with you."
This time she couldn't say no, there was no reason to.
"That's a good idea." she said even if she wanted him to stay.
"The best my love!" he grabbed her hand and followed her.
"You sure she's ok? She's pale."
"Not as much as before, don't worry she'll be fine."
"I don't think she's aware of her luck."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because you didn't stop watching over her since she was injured. Could you treat me like that when we'll be married?" he whispered in her ear.
"Shut up!"
"I love when you're blushing like that."
"I don't. I swear, the next time we'll be attacked, I'll make sure she doesn't fight."
"I want to see this!"
"See what?"
"You and Cara arguing whether she should fight or not."
"Kahlan, do you know how long she'll be asleep?"
"It can take hours. Hey don't look at me like that! Your stomach will be happy!"
"Cara is our best hunter..."
"No Zedd, I'm better." the Seeker said. "Don't worry, I'll prove it to you. What do you want?"
"I don't know... I'll come with you and we'll see."
"No stay with Kahlan. I don't want her to be in trouble."
"Come on Richard she's not defenseless."
"Thanks Zedd."
"Still, I can't leave you alone."
"I'll be ok."
"Cara said the same thing. Look at her now."
"Actually I'm too worried to let something happen to Cara. We'll be fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes I am. But don't be long please." She didn't mean it but she knew it would take long with Zedd.
"I promise." he kissed her on the cheek and left with the wizard.
"It's you and me now..." Kahlan whispered. "I'll take care of you, you'll see."
"It's the second time you wake me up today." Cara said, her voice barely audible.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean... Anyway you should be still asleep with what I gave you."
"I don't want to sleep anymore."
"So... I think we have a conversation to continue..."
"What conversation?"
"This dream, with you and me."
"I don't know what makes you think I dreamt about you."
"You were saved by magic, remember? That was a side effect. Because we touched when we were sleeping, we shared the same dream."
"Ridiculous, Mord'Sith don't dream." 'This can't be true, she must be kidding. This has to be a lie.'
"Really? So it was just me? That would explain why that Cara couldn't kiss me at first."
"It's not that I couldn't, it's just I-"
"Made a mistake." Kahlan interrupted.
"Ok..." Cara sighed. "But it was just a dream. I would have never done that if I knew."
"That's why I'm glad you didn't know. I told you Cara, I enjoyed it. Each kiss, each... things you did to me..."
"That's because you've never felt it before."
"Come on Cara, don't you understand what I'm telling you?!"
"What do you want me to say exactly?!" Cara yelled at her.
After that there was an awkward silence between the two.
"I want you to tell me you liked it as much as I did."
"I won't. It's a dangerous game Kahlan."
"It's just words Cara."
"No!"
"Alright, you want to forget it, I get it. But at least tell me what do you feel? About me I mean."
"Doesn't matter." The blonde said looking away.
"Just tell me."
"What do you want her to tell you?" Richard said wrapping Kahlan in her arms.
"Nothing."
"If it was really nothing you wouldn't have this look on your face."
"She wants to know how I feel, though I keep repeating I'm fine. I can handle the pain."
"If you say so!" Kahlan said coldly.
"I'm glad you feel better Cara. Kahlan said you won't fight again as long as she'll be here.
"Really?"
"It's true I said it, but obviously you're always fighting."
Cara knew what she meant.
"Kahlan..."
"No, it's the only thing you can do after all. So I guess I can't blame you." Kahlan said before she left.
She didn't want to hurt her. But like she said it was a dangerous game. A game they couldn't play. Cara couldn't believe all this. The dream and the fact that Kahlan was feeling the same. She just hurt herself by hurting Kahlan. Yes she wanted this, she wanted to tell her what she felt, but no she didn't allow herself.
"Hey, what just happened? I must have missed something. What is it?"
"It's nothing."
"No secret for your Lord Rahl."
"Sorry I need some sleep now. Ask Kahlan."
"Yeah, as if she would tell me... she seems so annoyed..."
"Scary, right?" Cara said with a tone barely audible, a smile on her lips. She wasn't even sure Richard had heard.
"Are you going to tell me what happened?!"
"No, it's between me and her!"
"But I'm a part of you."
"Richard I said no."
"That's not the first time you're not yourself because of some unknown things between you two."
"Richard can you just leave me alone? Or is that too difficult for the Seeker?!"
"You sound like her."
"I don't care who I sound like."
"Alright, I will come back when you'll be calm."
It took hours for Kahlan to be calm again. She knew Richard was looking at her all the time she was lost in her thoughts. Now it was time for her to tell him she was sorry. Of course he forgave her immediately when she gave him a kiss.
For the rest of the day Cara and Kahlan didn't speak or even glare at each other. Cara had always thought it would be easier this way but in fact it doesn't change anything. Actually yes that changed something; they both felt a big emptiness. An emptiness Kahlan was trying to avoid by hugging and kissing Richard.
"Why are we still here?" Cara asked
"You can't be serious! We're still here because someone got hurt. And the night is falling anyway." Richard replied.
"I'm fine."
"I agree with her, we should leave. And if she wants to die it's her problem." Kahlan growled.
"Confess me if you want me to die." Cara answered with a death glare.
"I thought they were good friends..." Richard said to Zedd.
"Girls are like that. Especially when it comes to men."
"Are you fighting because of me?" Richard grinned.
"In your dreams Lord Rahl!"
"So if this isn't a love affair then what is it?"
"Mord'Sith does not love? Am I wrong Cara?" Kahlan asked her coldly.
"You're certainly not! I'll get back to sleep. I'm tired of this conversation."
"A conversation we want to know." Zedd replied.
"I'm going to sleep too. I you really want to know then use your magic to read my mind. This is the only way." Kahlan truly wished he couldn't do that. 'If he had this power I would probably know anyway.'
"That's a good idea, I've heard about a potion to read minds."
"I'll join you soon my love, I promise."
"What's the matter with all of you? The stars haven't shown up yet and you're going to sleep!"
"I'm not tired, it's just I have to comfort someone."
"And what about me?"
"Will you allow me to go with her if I gave you my food?"
"Sure."
All Kahlan could see from Cara was her back. She knew they both wanted things to be like before. It was too late now. So she just closed her eyes. For a second she allowed herself to think about what she wants. But just a second. Then she buried her face in Richard's neck, which made him smile. 'This feels so wrong.'
Cara couldn't sleep neither. 'Why the hell is she asking this? Does she think it's easy for me? No she knows it's not, so why does she ask? I wish today never happened.' She stood up, she needed to drink, her throat was so dry. That's when she realized wasn't next to Richard anymore. She was out of sight.
"I told you to be careful." Said a voice Cara knew so well.
"I just need water. I think that's something I can do on my own."
After a moment Cara sighed.
"Alright, let's make a deal."
"A deal? "
"I tell you what I feel and you confess me."
"Are you out of your mind?! Let me tell you how I feel!" Kahlan began angrily. "It makes me sick to love someone like you. I hate everything about you! I hate that guy you slept with, I hate how you can walk away from me so easily and I hate me for feeling this!"
Cara was almost shocked by what she's just said. 'She really used the word easily?!'
"You're wrong if you think I can walk away from you easily. And it's because I can't that I didn't sleep with him. No matter how badly I tried, telling myself he's beautiful, sexy and funny..., I couldn't erase you from my mind."
"You're too strong Cara. You always say no when your mind says yes" A tear was falling down her cheek. "Can you just be weak for once? For me?" she whispered, reducing the distance between them. "Kiss me. You want this as much as I do."
"That's the problem. I can't be weak once. A tiny kiss and I'll never let you go. I won't be able to stop me from touching you."
"This is what you meant when you asked me to confess you. You're ready to die just for one moment with me."
"That's what will happen if we start anything. Even one touch is too much. It's not a problem for me, I'm not scared to die. Actually it would be easier. But I'm sure it's a problem for you."
They stayed quiet for a while before Kahlan continue.
"Cara, I lied when I said I hate everything about you."
"I know." she replied with a smile. "I'm glad the war between us is over. Anyway we should go to sleep now."
"I won't give up Cara. You'll be mine one day." Kahlan said, trying to steal her a kiss but not surprised to be pushed back.
"Just move on Kahlan" she answered, hiding a tear. 'I'm so far from being strong'
"Easy to say, harder to do."
