Hi, thanks for the reviews ;) it's good to read them.
So this was supposed to be the last chapter, but I've changed my mind, happily forever after is not for now.
Hope you'll like it.
When Kahlan opened her eyes she was glad to see the bruise on Cara's neck. That wasn't a dream. She smiled shyly when their eyes met.
"Don't worry Kahlan, you'll sleep much better in Aydindril." Richard told her gently.
"What are you talking about? I had a great night."
"Cara told me you were having nightmares." Kahlan'd forgotten that detail.
"Yes but sweet dreams came next quickly. Beside thanks Cara for doing that again."
"You're welcome Confessor." Cara said with a big smile.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Richard asked worried.
"Not really. But I want to talk about something else. Let's go for a walk."
"Ok."
Once they were out of the inn, Richard tried to take her hand but she stepped back.
"What is it?"
"It's not easy to say."
"My love you know you can tell me anything."
"That's the point Richard. I am not your love. Not anymore."
"What do you mean?"
"I tried Richard, trust me, but my feelings for you are not here anymore."
"You must be kidding me. Come on that's not funny."
"It's not a joke. Something has changed."
"What thing?"
"Remember when Cara and I went away with that little boy?"
"Yes."
"We didn't tell you the truth about what happened."
"Then tell me, what happened?"
Kahlan could see he was upset but she couldn't blame him.
"At first everything went fine, but then Cara got seriously injured. In fact without the magical treatment she had, she'd be dead by now. For five days she stayed between life and death. That's when I realized I couldn't..."
"You couldn't what?"
"I couldn't let her go away from me. Because I love her."
"You love Cara?! Are you serious?! And what does Cara think about this?"
"She feels the same."
"Well you loving her is hard to believe but Cara loving you back is just impossible. Cara will never love anyone in the way we're talking about."
"You don't know her like I do, you can't say that. Look I know that sounds crazy but... there's something else."
"Go ahead..."
"I can't confess her."
"Alright. Any other lie?"
"You don't believe me?"
"Because you really expect me to do so?" Richard yelled. "First you tell me you love her. That, I can understand. Well... more or less. But then you say she loves you back and you can't confess her."
"It's true though. One night I was having one of those nightmares and she started to massage me..."
"And that excited you." He looked at her disgusted.
"What?! No! I just felt more relaxed than I should have." She couldn't believe he looked at her like that. Like she was nothing more than a whore.
"You think you love her because you can't confess her. I know no matter how hard I tried you've always felt alone because of your magic. But now you have someone you can't confess you feel better."
"I love her Richard."
"But you're just someone new on her sex list you know that."
"Don't do this, please."
"And if I was immune too? Would you love her or me?"
"This isn't about confession."
"She killed your sister Kahlan."
"I know that. I know she killed many people. But she's changed. I'm in love with this new Cara."
"I should have let her die."
"You can blame me Richard, but not Cara. When I first told her about what I feel she said we shouldn't do it. She wasn't ok for this at first. But I insisted until she said yes."
"That bruise on her neck, it's you?"
"Yes..."
"I see. You didn't have any nightmare last night, did you? If you were naked in her bed it's because..."
"Yes I did have a nightmare. We didn't do anything tonight." Kahlan had never lied so well. The truth would be too painful. "I saw her lying in her blood like this time. It's hunting me. This is what my nightmares are about." She couldn't believe she had been able to say a lie that made sense. Well, almost...
"So why did you say my name?"
"I said your name?! Maybe, you were here too. Do you think I would have said your name if we were..."
"She's a Mord'Sith Kahlan, she can't give you the life you want. She can't give you children."
"I... I will take a mate. But I would have done too if I stayed with you."
"You won't change your mind, will you?"
"No."
"Alright, I'll go to the Palace of People and take the throne of D'Hara. And you know what it means right? She will have to come with me. It's her duty. If you choose her, you lose her."
"Richard please stop it."
He didn't say anything else, he just left. Kahlan wanted to follow him but she had no longer the strength to fight him. So she just stayed here, lost in her thoughts.
"I can't believe you've done that to me." Richard yelled at Cara.
"What did I do? Where's Kahlan?"
"Do you love her?"
"I do."
"I don't trust you. Love is not for your kind." Richard said angrily.
"You should calm down, you're not yourself."
"She told me about tonight. So? Is she good enough for you?"
"What?! She told you something happened last night?! Too bad I don't remember. I think this is because nothing happened!" 'Nice try Seeker, but I'm a Mord'Sith. You can't win this game.' "Or maybe she did something to me while I was asleep. I'll have to ask her." she faked to be surprised.
"Stop it! I know what you want but I won't let you play with her."
"I'm not playing with her. And you can say whatever you want, you know I'm not. I'd do anything for her. If she would have chosen you then I would have just let her go. And that's what I did for a long time. She had this smile on her face when she was with you... she was so happy I couldn't say anything. But it's my turn."
"No it's not. I won't let her go!"
"You don't have the choice Richard."
"As your Lord Rahl I command you to let her go."
"Only one person can ask me that. And she didn't. There's no Lord Rahl anymore. I've finally found my way."
"So you deny you're a Mord'Sith."
"I am a Mord'Sith. You denied the throne of D'Hara in the first place."
"But I'll take it back."
"And what do you think is going to happen?! I obey you and I tell Kahlan to love you like before?! Let's pretend I do that, do you think she would come back to you?! Open your eyes Seeker, the only reason why you can't let her go is because she's already gone."
"Why you? It kills me to know she leaves me for someone like you. You're not the one she needs."
"She knows what she needs. But you don't. Now tell me where is she."
"Well, I guess this is not my problem anymore."
"You're such a child." Cara said before she left.
"Hey, are you ok?"
"He hates me Cara."
"No he loves you. It's not easy for him to accept you don't love him anymore. He's overreacting for now but give him some time. Things will get better."
"What if they don't?"
"If they don't then he's just an idiot."
"I don't want him to be hurt because of me. It's my fault, I should have..."
"Your fault for what? Don't be who he wants you to be. Be yourself."
When a tear fell down Kahlan's cheek, Cara instinctively stepped back.
"I'm sorry Kahlan..." she said hesitantly.
"About what?"
"I don't know how to do it. I've never been a shoulder to cry on. I just don't know how to do it."
"Can you take me in your arms?" Kahlan asked shyly.
"Sure, I can do this. Come here." She took her gently in her arms as the Confessor asked. "Don't blame yourself for this. He must understand that you have your own feelings. And they can be different from his."
"I've loved him for a long time. And he's still very important for me."
"Hey, Kahlan, listen to me; no matter what happens next, you'll always have me. Just ask and I'm here."
"Thank you."
"Do you feel better?"
"A bit."
"Not very convincing." Cara said before she kissed her forehead. "That's not true, you know? I don't know what Richard told you but when he came to me he said I was playing with you. That's not true."
"Actually he said I was just someone new in your sex list."
"Well, that isn't really a lie." Cara grinned.
"Cara!"
"But that's a new list and there's only your name on it. I promise Confessor."
"I can't believe I love someone for whom sex is important."
"Does that bother you?"
"Not really, it's just the second time you mention there was others before me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I blame you for that. I can't do that."
"No it's ok, you can blame me if you want, if that makes you feel better. I think I understand."
"I don't blame you Cara. I just need to know I'm the only one for now."
"Not only for now. Even after the end of all time, there will only be you. The names written on my old list have my past. But you, you have my present and my future."
"Thank you Cara."
"You're welcome Confessor." Cara kissed her cheek.
"I should talk to him again. The thing is I don't know what to say."
"Tell him the truth. You're sorry for hurting him, you hope he won't be mad at you for long and that he has to move on. Because now you have a wonderful girl by your side."
"I won't tell him that!" Kahlan giggled slightly.
"Ah finally! Your smile is back!"
"You're a very good shoulder to cry on Cara."
"Really?"
"Definitely the best! I love you."
"Funny, I was going to say the same thing. You know what? I'll come with you this time."
"I'm not sure it's a good idea."
"Well, I'm sure you don't love me for my good ideas. But obviously he hurt you the last time so, good idea or not, I'll come with you."
"Hey, I'm a big girl Cara don't forget that."
"I don't forget that."
"Alright, you come with me." Kahlan rolled her eyes.
"Great!"
"But don't provoke him. No kiss or anything like that in front of him."
"Hey! I'm not trying to make things worst! Because we have to go to Aydindril after this is over."
"Richard, we need to talk." Kahlan came to him.
"About what? Did you changed your mind Cara?"
"In your dreams Seeker. We're going to Aydindril."
"But before we go I wanted to apology. I'm sorry for what you feel right now."
"You have no idea what I feel Kahlan."
"I've never said I did. I wish you could be happy. I'd do anything for that."
"Then stay with me Kahlan." Richard answered with a weak smile. "We can get through this. We can get through your feelings for her."
"What?! No! I want to be with her."
"And what about what I want?"
"You can't force her to love you. It's time to move on Richard."
"I can't! It's too hard."
"If you don't then you will both suffer from this. Is that what you want? Where's the Richard who wanted her to be happy?"
"I know what I have to do." Richard said weakly after a while. "But it's not easy. We were almost there Kahlan. You used to talk about Aydindril, saying we were going together and we'll live there and..."
"I know, I'm sorry. I don't want you to think I planned this."
"That's not what I think. Because I know you. Now you should go."
"But Richard, we're still friend aren't we?"
"Honestly I can't tell you for now. You broke my heart for a Mord'Sith. I guess time will tell us." He said before he left.
"But..."
"He's right Kahlan, it's time to go."
"I can't leave like that."
"Your people are waiting for you. Kahlan he needs some time that's all." Cara whispered. "When you see him again, I'm sure he will tell you what you want to hear."
"Which is?"
"Which is he's still your friend. He will move on. Especially if he has Mord'Sith on his side. We have many skills."
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely."
"Cara, I'm glad I'm in love with someone like you."
"Happy to hear that Confessor. Stay here, I'm going to buy a horse, We've wasted enough time. In few hours you'll be home."
Zedd decided to follow his grandson in D'Hara. It was a shock at first because as a Wizard of the First Order he was supposed to be in Aydindril. But it's true that Richard needed help, he couldn't rule D'Hara on his own.
There was probably the weirdest goodbye that ever existed. It was a strange atmosphere between them. Except Cara, who was only thinking about her future with Kahlan.
"It's strange, now that we're alone you and me I feel... free."
"Free?"
"Yes, I think it's the first time since I'm nine that I can really think about myself. I used to live to serve. Even if the last year was a bit different."
"I have to tell you life in Aydindril won't be easy. I don't think we will have a lot a time to spend together during the day."
"We'll still have nights."
"Is that enough for you?!"
"Hey, I didn't say that! I'm just trying to be positive."
"Yeah I'm sure you are." Kahlan kissed her gently. But Cara deepened the kiss, until the brunette broke the kiss. "And there's also..."
"What?"
"Our relationship won't be... official." The Confessor avoided her eyes.
"Humm... will we share the same bed?"
"I promise."
"Then it's ok for me. And I told you I liked the 'dirty little secret' thing."
"Really?!" Kahlan smiled again.
"Really. I can understand you know. And I'm sure it'll be a great game." Cara smiled wildly. Kahlan slapped her shoulder playfully. "Definitely the best game I'll ever play." This time Kahlan chuckled.
"Well I'm glad you feel that way."
"Were you worried?" Cara asked with a smile.
"A bit."
"A bit?"
"Ok a lot. But I think normal people wouldn't like that."
"So you forgot I was exceptional?!" The Mord'Sith faked to be shocked.
"I'm sorry."
"Oh no, you'll be sorry when I decide you will." Cara grinned.
"I'm impatient to see that!"
They continued to laugh until they realized it was really time to go now.
It took them more than four hours to reach Aydindril. The horse was exhausted.
"Wow, I can't believe I'm here again! I've missed it so much." Kahlan said with a big smile on her face.
"And I can't believe it took you so long to come back sister!" Said a voice behind them.
"Denee!" Kahlan hugged her. "How are you? It's been so long!"
"I'm fine. Well a bit tired of doing your job all the time, I must admit."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be, you had an important task." Denee looked around, surprised. "Richard isn't with you? And the Wizard?"
"It's a long story. Richard is going to take the throne of D'Hara, he's not coming here. And Zedd will help him."
"Whao I did't expect that. Anyway Kahlan..." Her face became serious. "She can't stay here. There's no place for her in Aydindril."
"What? Denee wait..."
"No Kahlan! You know what happened the last time a Mord'Sith came in Aydindril. It was a pure butchery."
"But it's different. She's not like that. And as the Mother Confessor I can..."
"And what will people think about a Mother Confessor who let a Mord'Sith come in Aydindril? They won't respect your decisions, they will rebel."
Cara was listening to them. Kahlan was desperately trying to argue but she knew Denee was right. Not about Cara, she'll never do such a thing. But people don't want to live this again. There is not a single adult living here that didn't lose a family member. And each child knew the story about a Mord'Sith that came here and fooled the whole city. Everyone trusted her, thinking she had changed. But she hadn't.
Their future wasn't so bright after all.
"You say that because you hate her."
"Do you blame me for that? Did you forget she killed me? And why the hell does that matter if she stays here or not? They're all the same. She's nothing more than that bitch!"
For the first time Cara intervened.
"She had a name." The blonde said with a threatening tone.
"See!" Denee added.
"Cara, you knew her?" Kahlan asked her, trying to understand why she was defending her.
"I owe her my life."
"What?!" Kahlan couldn't believe that.
"Doesn't matter." Cara growled.
"Well you don't owe her anything anymore." Denee said with a smile.
If that wasn't Kahlan's sister, Cara would have hit her. Kahlan wanted to know more about that revelation, but she didn't say anything. Their opinions on that woman were different.
"She can't stay here Kahlan. It's her or Aydindril."
"But..."
"Kahlan come here I need to talk to you alone."
"Cara I..."
"No let me speak." She put her hands on Kahlan's shoulders. "I don't want you to choose between me and Aydindril. I mean I don't want you to choose me. You belong here."
"Are you telling me you want me to let you go?!"
"They need you here."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be."
"Yes I am. Because I wouldn't have chosen you."
"Hey, Kahlan dry those tears. Aydindril is a part of you, you're a Confessor. I would feel so guilty if you denied who you are for me.
"But I thought you were a part of me too."
"Would it be so hard if I wasn't?" Cara took Kahlan in her arms. "Remember that time you told me you'd find a way? Today it's my turn to tell you that. Wait for me. Everything will be ok you'll see."
"I'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too Confessor." She kissed her cheek gently, knowing she couldn't kiss her lips in front of her sister.
You will have to wait a bit for the next chapter (holiday time!)
Don't forget to tell me what you think!
