Chapter 20 Heistmas time, part 2

"Who the hell is that girl?" Shinichi hissed to his cousin, who looked just as baffled as he was, and for once Kaito had no answers for him. His cousin just looked bewildered.

"Meitantei-san, for once, I have no sarcastic remarks to make," Kaito confessed, looking at him in bewilderment.

Shinichi smirked. "That's a relief," He said, "Here I thought you were going to act like a pompous, egotistical idiot."

Kaito huffed and folded his arms together. "Geez, see what happens when I try to help out my cousin? I get rebuked and tossed aside like nothing!"

"Come on, Kaito, relax, it's nothing that bad!" Shinichi said, his eyes softening upon seeing his cousin look all mad. "Don't worry about tomorrow, everything will work out just as planned."

Kaito sighed and looked at his cousin with a worried look on his face. "I hope it will," He whispered. To be honest, he thought what his cousin was suggesting was idiotic, if not downright dangerous. Why did his cousin have to find out, anyway? It would have been so much better for him to never know and only find out whenever he'd be in jail, and have to unmask him himself, than to have his own cousin out there risking his life for him.

Saguru had agreed, reluctantly, to keep his mouth shut about their affairs tomorrow, but he seemed rather hesitant to go along with it at all. The arrogant detective seemed to have some lines he wouldn't cross and separating family seemed to be one of them. All in all, it was going to be a fairly eventful night.

Kaito couldn't resist the KID grin he sent Shinichi, who just rolled his eyes.

"Tonight will be exciting, won't it?" Shiho said, cutting in to look at both of them with excited eyes, "Tomorrow, the Kaitou KID is going head-to-head with Shinichi Kudo."

"What? Who said that?" Shinichi cried. All heads in the classroom turned to look at him.

"See this newspaper? It says so right here. Saguru Hakuba told us how he's going to humiliate you and capture KID first." Shiho said.

Shinichi looked at the newspaper for a few moments and shook his head. "That dumb detective...he'll get what's coming to him tomorrow."

"Yeah," Kaito whispered. The two of them traded a rare smile, of which only they knew the meaning to. Shiho smiled, too.

"I know who you two both are," She whispered.

Kaito heard and jumped. "Rest assured, whoever the KID is, his identity is one hundred percent unknown!" He said, his eyes darting to his cousin, who looked just as bewildered by her sudden declaration.

"Is she a spy of some sort?" He whispered.

"Who knows?" Kaito whined as she walked away from them and went to talk to some other people...though Shinichi couldn't help but notice that most of the people were talking to her, and she was merely listening rather than directly engaging in the conversation.

'Ha, she must have a smart mind to not have anything to say to those social clowns,' Shinichi thought in amusement. 'Still, what's this eerie feeling I get around her? It's like something is...off about her. But what?'

Ran Mouri watched her best friend as he interacted with his cousin merrily. The two of them seemed closer than she had ever been with Shinichi his entire life, and that made her feel very envious. Still, it wasn't her place to intervene on Shinichi's happiness. That would make her selfish.

'I'm being stupid, aren't I?' She asked. There was no way she was going to tell Shinichi how she felt about this, because she knew how he would react. He would be upset and boys tended to misunderstand what girls felt all the time.

"...Ran, are you all right?"

Shinichi's voice snapped her out of her musings. Ran nearly fell out of her chair in surprise.

"Ran, don't act so surprised. You could hurt yourself," He said softly. He seemed so gentle at the moment. Was it possible that he returned her feelings, or was it just the sort of feelings a guy had for his friend and nothing more?

"Shinichi, I'm sorry that I spaced out, it's just, I've noticed how much time you've been spending with Kaito-kun...it sort of makes me feel jealous...it feels like I'm not worthy of your attention or something," She confessed.

Shinichi scowled. "Baa-rou. Don't be like that, Ran. That's not how it is at all. Kaito is my cousin and it's true that we share each other's darkness and light, but at the same time, you mean as much as he does to me. Don't ever think stupid thoughts like that, okay?"

Ran blushed at his close contact. "Shinichi, do you...?"

"Oh, look the husband is getting it on with his wife!" Sonoko cried, ruining the tender moment.

Shinichi's cheeks reddened. "Baarou, where did you come up with that inane and stupid idea?"

"Sonoko-chan, that's not very funny," Ran whined, but her face was cherry-red as well, evidently from her classmate ruining her chance to talk to the boy she secretly liked.

"Oh, warm up a little. It may be cold and snowy outside, but at least it's not raining." Sonoko said, "I hate the rain."

"Oh, ojousama, do tell me where you bought your dress from? It seems like the skirt is a little too short..." Kaito said as he looked up her skirt.

Sonoko screamed in embarrassment. "You little pervert! How dare you look up my skirt!" She wailed.

Kaito just chuckled in amusement while Shinichi smirked. His cousin was back to his old, thieving ways...and it seemed they would stay that way.

The next day was a Saturday for Shinichi, and it dawned bright and early. Shinichi looked out the window and watched the crimson sun rising up in the sky. He remembered vaguely the warning about how a red sky in the morning was a bad omen, and dismissed it as nothing but nonsense.

"...Kaito's going to be doing his night show again...despite the fact that I told him not to, he'll still do it, anyway! Damn him and his showy attitude!" Shinichi cursed. 'But, am I truly ready for my role? Am I truly ready for what is to follow tonight? I'm well aware that people are spying on Kaito and I...which means...tonight, I must follow Kaito and make sure he's all right...'

His mind drifted to another solution. "Perhaps I could..." He thought, his hand on over his mouth. "No, that carries too much risk and it's stupid enough on its own merit. Kaito would yell at me if he heard me suggest such a thing."

"But, can I really let him go alone on such a stupid task? I mean, he's actually trying to get himself killed! What I don't understand is why I can't just go to the police about this!"

He whipped out his cell phone and started to dial the number for Inspector Megure, until another thought occurred to him. "Perhaps...the FBI? No, that seems stupid. I'll just ask Megure-keibu to keep some officers on patrol there..."

He didn't dare go without the police there...he didn't want Kaito to be hurt.

Kaito got up bright and early as well, and his thoughts were serious for once. 'Should I really go through with this?' He thought. 'This might be my last heist...but I need to expose these guys and make them pay for what they did to Tousan."

That night...

The moon dawned over the eager crowd of people awaiting Kaitou Kid's arrival at his next location. What most of them weren't aware of was that there were members of the Black Organization there, also eagerly awaiting the arrival of KID, but they wanted to murder him here and now.

However, the Organization wasn't aware of the idea that Shinichi Kudo had put some police officers on duty for the night to protect KID. Even if they had been, they considered him too little of a threat to be worth killing.

The only objective today was to eliminate the vermin known as KID.

"So we've gotta kill the little thief, huh?" Chianti said, looking extremely bored.

"Don't miss," Gin warned, "Anokata wants us to not mess up on this."

"Right, right," Chianti said, wishing she had something to occupy herself with now.

Shinichi watched the officers receive their official pep rally again (listening to Nakamori's loud voice was enough torture the first time he heard it, so he had his hands on over his ears), so he probably didn't hear the footsteps behind him or wasn't aware of the presence behind him until they touched him.

"What?" He cried as he whirled around, only to see a police officer standing there, smiling. "Oh...Kaito..."

The police officer shushed him. "Damn it, Shinichi, don't give me away now!"

"Sure..." Shinichi said dryly.

"By the way, who's the loudmouth who's picking a fight with Nakamori-keibu? I can hear his cursing from all the way over here." Kaito sneered.

"Who would that be?" Shinichi asked.

The "officer" smirked. "Darned if I know. I'll be on my way now."

"Don't die on me," Shinichi said.

Kaito winked. "You know me better than that."

Still, as Kaito disappeared, Shinichi hoped things would go well.

Now that he mentioned it, he could hear a new person arguing, though they seemed awfully familiar...

"HEY, WHY WON'T YA LET ME HUNT KID? I'M A GOOD DETECTIVE, YOU AHOU!"

'Oi, oi, don't tell me it's that guy again,' Shinichi thought in horror.

"I ALREADY HAVE SOMEONE HUNTING KID! KUDO SHINICHI IS ENOUGH! GO HOME, KID!" Nakamori's booming voice cried.

"SURE, WHATEVER, YOU OLD FART," The boy said back, and before he knew it, Shinichi sweatdropped upon seeing a familiar Osakan detective come wandering away, looking quite irritated.

"Sheesh, the nerve of that Inspector...who the hell does he think he is?" The boy cursed under his breath. His eyes widened upon seeing Shinichi standing there.

"Hey," He said, "Kudo, I'm glad to see you're here."

"Get kicked out?" Shinichi taunted.

Hattori just sighed. "How do ya reason with that ahou, Kudou? He's stupid."

"A stupid genius," Shinichi remarked. "I wonder when KID will show up."

"Why are you so worried about KID? Wanna shoot him again?" Hattori laughed at his own joke, but stopped upon seeing the serious look on Shinichi's face.

"No...never again will I shoot at him. I have to see him first," Shinichi said quietly.

"Kudo...you're acting odd..." Hattori said.

"Nothing...it's nothing," Shinichi remarked.

'I wonder when Kaito will show up as his costumed alter ego,' He thought before sighing at his cousin's tendency for theatrics, 'That idiot.'

"Look, there he is!" An officer cried.

Shinichi looked up. Sure enough, there was Kaito dressed as KID, ascending the top of the building, waving at all of his fans. "Hello there, ladies and gentlemen. I have a special show tonight. Hello down there, Nakamori-keibu. Have you checked your blood pressure lately?"

"KID! GET HIM! ALL OFFICERS, GET KID!" Nakamori cried.

Shinichi knew now was his time to act. He pushed past a few officers, and beckoned to his cousin, who winked.

"A special show...too bad...it'll be your last," Chianti deadpanned as she got ready to fire. She had her eyes set on the target and she was ready to fire.

Shinichi watched as his cousin entertained his audience and then as he got ready to climb up the building...when, suddenly, his cousin stopped climbing...and started to fall. He froze, watching as KID fell...with red soaking his formerly pristine white clothes...red coming from the shoulder.

'Oh...no...Kaito, why are you so foolish?' Shinichi thought desperately as he hurriedly dialed the number for the ambulance. Then, he would have to search for Kaito. It wouldn't be easy.

"Looks like the KID's dead," Chianti chuckled.

"Maybe the Silver Bullet has intervened," Vermouth replied.

"That's nothing but a myth," Gin said darkly.

'Kaito, I swear I'll find you!'
