...Piko to return to his original form.

The energy began to vibrate, making small tremours run through my body.

I ask for Piko to return to his original form. I remember his hand slung around my shoulder, laughing, the melted ice cream in his hand...

I ask for Piko to return to his original form. I feel larger tremours, and I shut my eyes. My hands are above my heart, nearly tearing my shirt.

I ask for Piko to return to his original form. The energy was nearly to bursting point already. It was coming, mostly, to my hands, and my heart, leaving the other parts of my body numb and prickly.

I ask for Piko to return to his original form. Again, it vibrated even more, just as light hit me full on. The wind began to push at me gently.

I ask for Piko to return to his original form. The light was brighter, and the wind began to press harder, my hair feeling like small blades of grass against my face and neck.

I ask for Piko to return to his original form. Then, the wind was howling. It was something I wanted badly, this wish, and he wanted it too, so it was probably stronger than when I'd asked for Miku to return.

I ask...

My strength began to falter. I fell to my knees.

...for Piko to...

My eyes began to flutter shut.

...return to his...

I fell on my side.

...original form.

Then, it all passed into darkness after the light bent in on itself.

Like time did.

When I returned to consciousness, I felt warm.

Really warm.

I was covered.

It hadn't worked, or had I asked for the wrong thing?

I looked up to see his face, sleeping, his eyes shut.

His hair was gently brushing my face.

I blinked, then felt relieved.

It worked.

I smiled, then succumbed to the lull of respite.

When it was around midday, I woke again, this time a bit cooler. Piko's laying beside me, grinning.

Then I notice something.

He's still got those wings, the wings he'd had before.

Everything else, though, is normal.

And then there's the package next to me.

I open it to see a still cold, carrot cake ice cream.

I smile lightly.

"Thanks."

"You're welcome." He's staring at the clouds behind me, nibbling on his vanilla flavoured one.

I looked at mine, then licked it hesitantly. Instantly memories spouted up.

Is it really only about two months since the last day of summer?

It feels like at least six.

I shut my eyes and let the late, warm August breeze tousle my hair. It'll get really cold in a week or so, which means more jackets, more layers, and more stuff, generally.

Well, more packing ourselves into thick coats.

"I doubt that. It's still in the seventies."

So the link was still there. Huh.

"Odd, right?"

"Yeah... you'd think, with all that's happened, it would be at least weakened, but it's really strong. I can literally feel you move."

"Sounds a bit perverted, Little Miss Nemanon."

"I am not a pervert, you jerk!" My face is a bright red, and Piko's doubled over from laughing so hard.

"Calm down. I'm just saying it."

"Doesn't mean you're just saying that to deflect attention off of you."

"Oh, so you're pointing fingers at me now?"

"Yup."

"Well, I'd better get set on flying, because you seem like buisness. I surely don't want brain freeze from you forcing a legion of ice cream down my throat." I snort, then restrain my smile.

"You should."

"Mmm-hmm." He finishes his, and I'm still only half-way through mine. I frown.

"You're going to get brain freeze anyways, the rate you're burning through those." Three popsicle sticks are sitting next to him, one in his hand.

"Naw, I'll do it slower. The other two were from an hour ago." I raise my eyebrow.

"Really?"

"For once, yes. So please let me eat without trying to shove it all down so I can talk."

I smiled lightly, then looked back at the clouds, spotting one that looked like a ring of white fire.

Silence permeates the air, with the breeze still gentle. Then, I realise something.

"Yeah, possibly... might work... no, that would be a dead giveaway...That's cool, but I don't think that would work...That one's way better..."

He was talking with my thoughts, as my mind went into overdrive mode.

"Okay, Gumi, slow down. I can't keep up."

Sorry.

"I know you're not really sorry."

Yeah, it's just habit.

Then, he slips his arm around my shoulder, like it has so many times in the past, his fingers touching the scar that is hidden beneath my sleeve.

Deep within my heart, I feel like the nightmare that scared me so is on track to reality.

What prompted that, though, I have no idea.
