Chapter 10
"Were There Dragons?"
"But you can fix this right?" Bo asked and the blonde looked away. "Lauren!"
"Maybe! Bo I don't know I can't try to find an antidote, something that would reverse the effects, but I don't know how much time we have…"
"Why the hell did you give the Morrigan anything to begin with!" Bo snapped and threw the towel she had just wiped her hand with on the counter. Lauren moved away from the kitchen and out of earshot from the boy, followed by Bo. "You know very well she can't be trusted!" Bo continued angrily.
"Are you fucking kidding me Bo!" Lauren yelled knowing that only her girlfriend could hear her. "It's not that simple Bo. Nothing is that simple. Maybe for you it is. You're Fae, but I'm just human!" the blonde stopped to shallow the painful lump in her throat. "She has a million thing that she could use against me," Lauren continued in a rough voice as emotions took over. "She could kill me in a instant… or worse she could hurt you or our friends…"
Bo took a step closer to Lauren and grabbed her hand. "Lauren…" she said softly and then sighed. She used her hold on Lauren to bring her into a hug, wrapping her arms around the blonde protectively. "I'm sorry."
Lauren found herself pushing her body deeper into Bo's comforting embrace, closing her eyes shut, seeking for relief even just for a moment. Bo stroked the back of her hair, and it wasn't before a few minutes that Lauren pulled away saying she should get to this right now.
Bo nodded and told Lauren that she would go prepare Jack for his bedtime. The succubus set him up in the guess bedroom, and the boy was so thrill to have an enormous bed to himself that he kept rolling from side to side and laughed happily.
Bo couldn't help but smile as she watched him. "Alright alright buddy slow down or you won't be able to sleep. It's time to hit the hay." She said softly and Jack moved under the covers. Bo tucked him comfortably and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Want me to read you a story?" Bo asked and took her phone out of her pocket. "I don't have any book, but I could search for one on the Internet…" she trailed off, typing 'children bed time stories' in Google.
"Am I going to die?" He said next, his words full of innocence. It caught Bo off guard and she turned quickly to look at him.
"What? No. No buddy you a gonna be just fine. What, emh, what makes you think that?"
"It's just that I heard you and Lolo talking loudly at each other and I heard that." He shrugged, burying a part of his face under the sheets he held in his fists.
Bo took one of his hands in hers. "I promise you buddy, Lauren and I are gonna do everything we can to keep you safe, you hear me? Nothing is gonna happen to you. So don't you worry about anything." Bo said before placing a kiss on his forehead. She looked at him. How such a sweet and young boy could be put in so much danger already? He deserved a chance at a normal life and he was way too young to start worrying about stupid Fae politics.
"Can I still have a story?"
Bo smiled. "Of course. Any suggestion?"
"Mhm, how about you make one up?"
"Oh eh, okay. Sure." The succubus pondered for a moment. "Okay. So once upon time there was this queen and she was very, very lost, until she met another wonderful Queen that guided her home… to her castle."
"Were there dragons?"
"Plenty of them, and they kicked their butts…"
Bo entered the master bedroom, sighing as she started undressing. Lauren was sitting on the bed with her laptop on her lap. She shut the screen and looked at Bo.
"This is not fair… he's in too much danger already. He deserves a normal life." Bo said quietly. She stripped down completely and put on a nightgown before joining the blonde on the bed.
"Bo, there might be a way to cure him… but it won't be with my antidote. Importing the ingredients would take maybe more than a month and going to the Dark Fae compound could be dangerous for all of us. The Morrigan could try to stop me and god knows what might happen," Lauren explained.
Bo's brows furrowed in confusion. "What are you proposing?"
"There's this ancient clan isolated in Mexico. They can basically do the same thing as my elixir; turn Fae human, human into Fae." Lauren continued and sighed. "I did a lot of research on them over the past years, and they inspired me to make the elixir."
"Okay great let's take a plane right now and bring the kid to them." Bo said impetuously.
Lauren on the other hand knew this wasn't this simple. "Bo, like I said, I did a lot of research on them and I wouldn't bring a child there. They could be extremely dangerous. There is a reason why they isolate themselves… they can be very agressive with humans, or any kind of Fae really that isn't like them. And we can't take a plane; the Morrigan and The Wanderer could easily track us down. We'd have to drive there."
Bo's shook her head. She contemplated the situation and realized this would be hell. "But Mexico… that's like a 50 hours drive away from here… if not more. It would take more than a week. And what would we do with Jack? He has no one, Lauren."
"Jack could stay with Hale and Kenzi, they'd keep him safe." Lauren said and took Bo's hands. "It's our only chance honey. We have to do this."
Bo sighed. "Okay." She breathed. "But can we get some sleep for first I am in no way able to drive right now."
"Of course love. We'll wake up early tomorrow and leave then, before anyone can see us."
The succubus closed the light and lowered herself onto the bed and spooned Lauren. Bo's arm around Lauren was so needed right now. It made Lauren feel safe and love when times were hollow and dark like this.
"I love you so much Bo," the doctor whispered.
"I love you too baby. And this is why I will do everything to keep you safe." Bo tightened her embrace to emphasize her statement. She meant every word of it, no one else was gonna die on her watch, not if she could stop it.
Slumber didn't come easily that night, but they had each other to comfort one another and whisper sweet words of encouragement.
The next day the couple was up at 4:30am, packing Lauren's SUV with all the stuff they thought they could need: dry food from Lauren years in Afghanistan, extra-warm wool blankets, flashlights, tools, clothes, snacks, iphone chargers, power generators. Lauren had thought of everything and that in a short lapse of time. Bo was impressed, but then again she was not surprised to see her girlfriend rise and exceed at a task. Lauren was extraordinary. Bo felt useless; she even tried to check if everything was okay to go on a long road trip with Lauren's car, but with the mere knowledge of mechanic she had, it was impossible to know if it was fine considering all was electronic now.
At approximately 5:30am, Bo decided to wake up Jack and get him ready. They had to leave soon and say goodbye to their friends and family. Bo and Lauren were already so deeply attached to the boy; they knew they were gonna miss him and it had been just a night. At that moment she understood every parent on heart that fell in love with their child to second they are born—it made so much sense, and yet none? How can you love someone who you have met 2 seconds ago, someone who hasn't even formed any opinion yet? Someone who doesn't know how to love you back? And yet love is seamless. Even if you can name a bunch of reasons why you might possibly love someone or something, you can never say the ultimate reason. You just do. Bo felt as though she had fallen with Jack the same way as she had with Lauren; at first sight, deeply, and inevitably.
Bo installed him in the car seat and closed the door. "Are Hale and Kenzi gonna be able to keep him safe?" The succubus worried. They were her friends and Bo trusted them more than anyone, but no one had any idea what they were up against.
Lauren shut down the car trunk and walked toward Bo to bring her in an embrace. "It's gonna be okay babe, Hale is powerful and now that Kenzi had some shadow thief training, she can defend herself. Plus, Tamsin is gonna be around to help them." Lauren reassured her, placing her palm on Bo's cheek comfortingly. "We have to go now honey," she breathed and then placed a kiss on her girlfriend's forehead. Bo nodded and entered the car. She looked at Jack in rear view mirror and he seemed so peaceful and happy with the Despicable Me minion plush he was hugging.
She drove them to Hale's apartment in Yorkville and prayed that they would get out of the city before traffic started. Bo was already anxious enough as it was and she didn't need extra stress from that.
Jack was happy to see aunty Kenzi and uncle Hale again, which made it a lot easier for everyone. Bo and Lauren on the other hand were sad to let him go. Bo exchanged a hug with Kenzi who told her to be safe and wished her luck.
"Doc, take good care of my Bo-Bo and go all super Hotpants science-y on those Tacos eating Fae, yeah?" Kenzi said to Lauren. Fear could be heard in her voice; she knew her friends were embarking on a dangerous journey and having lost Dyson was hard enough.
"Of course Kenzi," Lauren said and her lips curved in a soft smile. "And you take care of Jack. No more Little Red Riding Hood," she teased. "Take care of each other guys."
Kenzi wrapped her arms around one of Hale's arm and the couple nodded in agreement. "Bye" the younger human whispered.
Bo wanted to cry. She wanted to fall apart completely right there in front of all her friend and give up because fuck, this was hard and whole life had been hard since the moment she had turned 16, and all she wanted was a peaceful life and joy and laughter with her Lauren and her friends. She wondered if there would be a day in her life where she would stop having to fight and struggle and be lost.
Lauren could sense it because she put a comforting hand on Bo's back as they left the building.
The couple got inside the car and the clock read '5:45'. They should be able to skip town before traffic. Lauren installed the GPS and Bo started the engine. They shared a look and soft smiles as their fingers laced together on the gear stick between them.
"Let's get this over with," Bo said, shifting the gear and leaving the parking.
They wouldn't be over with this any soon, however.
