AN: Enjoy!
As Vision's car pulled up outside the Barton Home, Wanda couldn't help feeling increasingly nervous.
"It's going to be alright" Vision tried to reassure her once again, "Your Foster Parents sound like lovely people."
"They are, but.."
"They don't need to know anything about us, beyond that we are friends" Vision hopped out of the car and rushed around to the passenger side to open the door for her.
"I know.." said Wanda, getting out of the car with Nate's gift in hand. "But Clint can be very observant. They used to call him Hawkeye, you know.."
"Well, he may be observant, but I can be very discreet" Vision countered, retrieving his own gift for little Nate from the car's back seat. "Besides, If everything goes as planned, I will have charmed your family by the end of this visit, so when the time comes that they do find out about us, they will already know that there is nothing to worry about.." He instinctively reached to hold Wanda's hand as they moved towards the house, then blushed, pulling it back.
"Discreet, huh?" Wanda raised an eyebrow.
"A momentary lapse in judgement" Vision's blush deepened. "Trust me."
"I do. I just can't help worrying a little.." In fact, Wanda had just noticed something that made her worry even more."
"Why?""
"Well, Clint is already giving you the evil eye from the front window."
"Oh.." Vision gulped, spotting the man in question moments before a woman's arm yanked him out of sight. Then, he simply took a breath, steeling himself, and headed towards the front door. "Well, I will just have to try harder."
"Hold on!" Wanda hurried ahead of him. "Maybe I should go first.."
Laura opened the door before Wanda could even knock, baby Nate settled on her hip, and Clint standing behind her with a slightly sour expression.
"Hi, Sweetie! It's great to see you!" Laura drew Wanda into a one-armed hug.
"Hey, Laura" Wanda returned her Foster Mother's hug, then pulled back to smile at the little boy on her hip. "Hi there, Birthday boy. We've got presents for you!"
"Ooh, that's nice isn't it Nate?" Laura smiled, while Nate cooed and giggled in response. "Wanda and.."
"Vision" Wanda introduced as she waved him closer. "This is Vision, my friend from grief group. Vizh, these are my Foster Parents, Laura and Clint."
"Ah, Wanda and Vision brought presents!" Laura continued, while Nate cooed again. "Nice to meet you, Vision."
"You too" Vision smiled, offering his hand to shake. "Hello."
Laura did so happily. Clint, however, continued to eye Vision suspiciously, leaving Vision's outstretched hand hovering awkwardly for a painfully long moment, until Laura gently elbowed her husband.
"Vision.. Kind of an odd name, huh?" Clint commented, reluctantly shaking Vision's hand.
"My given name is Victor" Vision replied, keeping his own handshake firm. "Vision was a nickname from friends originally, but it seems to have stuck."
"Well, I think it's nice.." Laura cut in, trying to ease the tension. "Now come on in, Lunch is almost ready, and then we'll open presents before the cake.."
"Sounds great" Wanda managed a smile, very much hoping that the whole day was not as awkward as introductions had been.
Cooper and Lila swarmed Wanda excitedly as soon as they spotted her, both chattering away. Wanda happily listened, and as soon as they paused long enough for her to get a word in herself, introduced Vision, who already seemed rather charmed by them both. Wanda and Vision then added their gifts to a pile that had been set aside for later, before Laura called them all for lunch. She'd prepared an impressive spread of various popular party foods, encouraging everyone to help themselves as she loaded up Nate's plate and cut things into bite-size pieces for him.
Once everyone's plates were filled and food was being eaten, Clint resumed his earlier attempt at questioning Vision.. However, to avoid being immediately scolded by Laura, he went about doing so in a slightly roundabout way.
"So, you two met at your Grief group, huh?" Clint asked Wanda.
"We did" Wanda nodded.
"And how's that been going for you? Grief group, I mean.."
"Uh.." Wanda blinked, taking a moment to clear her mind, because these days, she mostly associated Grief Group with the time she spent with Vision after the meetings were over. "Alright, I suppose. Sometimes it helps."
"Good, good.. And what about you?" Clint turned to Vision. "The Group helps you heal after losing your.."
"My son, Vincent.." Vision replied softly. "He was thirteen.."
"That's terrible" Laura cut in, as both she and Wanda flashed Clint warning glares, "I'm so sorry."
"Yeah, sorry for your loss.." Clint at least had the decency to look chastened for a moment before continuing. "Any other kids?"
"Clint!" Laura snapped.
"It is alright.. I have a daughter, Vivian. She and Vin were twins" said Vision, and, in the interest of intercepting Clint's next likely question, added, "It has just been the twins and I since they were quite small."
"Viv is just the sweetest thing" Wanda cut in, unable to resist holding Vision's hand under the table despite the fact that the plan had been to present themselves as just friends. "She's a credit to him."
Vision blushed, but gave her a grateful smile.
"Thank you."
Clint opened his mouth again, but Cooper, after a small nod from Laura, kicked his shin under the table. Clint yelped, dropping a piece of party pie.
"Oops.. sorry, Dad" Cooper apologised, while Laura smirked, then winked at Wanda.
Wanda chuckled.
After everyone had eaten their fill, Cooper and Lila set about helping their little brother open his gifts, with Clint making sure they were actually just 'helping' rather than taking over entirely, and Laura snapping lots of pictures to mark the occasion.
After Nate had opened the Xylophone that Vision had helped her pick out for him, Wanda sat on the floor with the little boy, showing him how to play with it, and all the different sounds that could be made. Nate's joyful squeals and giggles warmed Wanda's heart, and she found herself comforted by the realisation that Vision was right, and there was still plenty of time to make memories with her little brother. When Laura took Nate for his nap, Wanda turned around to thank Vision, only to discover that he and Clint had taken the two older kids outside to play, and await the end of Nate's nap, at which time they would have cake.
Wanda stepped out onto the porch, watching fondly as Clint and Vision tossed a ball around with the kids. After a while, Clint, needing a break from the game, joined Wanda on the porch.
"Hi.." He greeted rather sheepishly. "So.. Your, uh, 'friend' seems like a pretty good guy."
"He is" Wanda smiled softly. "It seems like Cooper and Lila like him."
"Yeah.. but, uh, as nice as he is, you know there's a lot to consider if you two were ever going to be more than 'friends', right?"
"Like Viv? I found out Vision was a Dad the first time I ever spoke to him. Her existence isn't news to me. And like I said, she's a great kid."
"She's also a teenage girl who's never had a Mom" Clint pointed out. "And you.. well, you've been through a lot recently. If you and Vision get more serious, you might find yourself playing.."
"I know, Clint," Wanda sighed, cutting him off. "I know I haven't had the easiest time since Pietro died, and I get why you're worried about me. But I'm not a lovestruck teenager diving in head-first without thinking. I know things aren't simple when there's a child involved, I know there's a lot to consider if Vizh and I.. were, uh, actually dating. I have thought about it, quite a lot.. Whether I could become someone's Mom.. But, you know what that made me think about?"
"What?" asked Clint.
"Pietro and I, and where we would have ended up if a very nice couple hadn't decided to take over as our Mom and Dad.." Wanda kissed Clint's cheek. "I know the situation with Vision and Viv is very different. I just need you to trust me when I say that I have thought things through, I wouldn't be going in blind. If I decide to go for it anyway.. It's my choice, and I know what I'm getting into."
"Okay.." Clint nodded, rather chastened. "Good. Glad we cleared that up."
"So am I" Wanda chuckled.
Sometime later, Wanda and Vision left the Barton farm, with an extra slice of Birthday cake to take to Viv.
"That was very nice of Laura" Vision commented as they drove. "She didn't have to."
"Yeah, but that's Laura for you" Wanda smiled. "Pietro and I never left Sunday dinner without a few containers of leftovers."
"It must be nice.. Having a Mother to do those things for you."
"It is.." It occurred to Wanda, rather suddenly, that she had never asked Vision about his own Parents.. Yet now did not feel like quite the right time. "So, it seems like your charm offensive worked, Vizh. Clint likes you."
"I quite liked him too" said Vision. "But, I expect he still has concerns.. namely, the fact that I have a teenage child."
"How did you know?" Wanda frowned, confused.
"Because I have a daughter, and that is the type of scenario I would find myself feeling concerned about, once she begins dating. Not that I am particularly worried about you and I, of course, but I know us and our circumstances. Before Today, your Foster Father did not know me from Adam. Of course he would worry.."
"Would you pull over for a sec?"
"Why? Are you feeling sick?" Vision frowned, but did exactly as Wanda asked him, pulling to a stop at the side of the road. "The food was wonderful, but there was a lot of it, and some of these roads are rather wind-y.."
"No. It's because I want to kiss you, but like you said, the road is wind-y, so I'd rather you not take your eyes off it while driving."
"Oh.."
Before Vision could say anything more, Wanda leaned over and kissed him, deeply, not breaking it until air became an issue.
"Thank you, for coming with me today" Wanda told him, gently stroking his cheek. "And for being so understanding about everything with Clint.
"You're welcome.."
A rather goofy, adorable grin had spread over Vision's face, and Wanda's heart swelled at the sight of it. Next time, she decided, she would tell her family exactly how special he was to her.
