A/N: Please note that in this chapter Edgar's going to be a MAJOR DICK! But I dont want any fans of his to take offense to it. Edgar's actually my number one guy and I'm in love with him. This is just where the story took me. It's nothing personal, I still think he's the best and hope we get married one day. (Fingers crossed, lol) Enjoy and review please :)
It was 2 days later and the Northwestern crew was on the grind again returning to their first string they set. Everyone was ready to pull pots, excited to see if the Bering Sea had blessed them with full crab pots, a fisherman's gold. The weather was also extremly beautiful. Sun shining, calm seas, and comfortable temperature. Everyone waited anxiously as Edgar tossed the hook for their first pot. The hook caught the line and Edgar began pulling it in. He set the line in the block and everyone was anxious to see what the pot would bring. Even Gia was holding her breath.
There was a loud outburst of cheers as a full pot came over the rail.
"Yeah! That's what I'm talking about baby!" Sig yelled through the loud hailer and Edgar laughed at his brother's enthusiasm. They began sorting the crab, which had few females/juveniles and most were completely clean. There was a count of 445 keepers and Sig was estatic.
"Let's set that one back!"
"Roger!" the crew cried in unison, even the cameraman. He realized what he'd done, looked around to see if anyone had caught him, and saw Gia giving him a knowing smile. He gave her an embarrased smile in return and suddenly began fussing with his camera. She laughed as she ran over to rebait the pot.
They went through about 15 pots and each one seemed to be better than the last. They were on a 400-500 average and Sig was in high spirits.
"Hey, why dont we let the greenhorn sort some crab." Sig called out through the loud hailer.
Gia, standing at the bait station, looked over to the sorting table and Norman gestured her to come over, with his index finger. Gia looked from side to side, before pointing to herself and mouthing "Me?" Norman laughed and pointed to her mouthing "You!" Gia smiled and made her way over to Norman's side. The cameraman and everyone else was in shock. Rarely did Norman laugh and joke around, especially with the camera crew filming. He hated cameras and loved giving the camera guys a hard time. But right now he seemed to have forgotten his silent demeanor and the cameramen took full advantage of it.
"So here's how you sort them..." Norman began, as he showed Jo the difference between males, females, and juveniles. What was considered clean and dirty, and he even gave her a measuring stick to determine which crab would be too small. The cameraman who was filming felt a great deal of triumpth. No other cameraman had ever caught Norman speak this much in an entire season. He'd have bragging rights for years to come.
The Northwestern crew looked at each other with surprise but soon returned to sorting. Everyone was still in high spirits and everyone was laughing and joking. Except Edgar. He didnt hate Gia. In fact he respected her work ethic and ability, but being the deckboss, he felt he needed to make every greenhorn miserable their first trip out and break them. Especially a girl. But with Gia it was impossible. She never showed any reactions to his unreasonable demands or taunts. And the crew clearly loved her. Even Matt had joined the dark side and was being nice to her. Edgar felt like she should be having a harder time than she was.
The crew had to hual in 3 more pots before they were finished with the string. Since there wasn't much work left to do Edgar took the oppurtunity to go inside for a quick bathroom break. After he relieved himself, he passed by his shared stateroom and saw a bag of Kotex on Gia's bed. Edgar made a face, thinking Gia should keep her personal things like that a little more under wraps. Suddenly an idea popped into his head and Edgar had an evil grin plastered over his face.
Edgar returned outside a few minutes later and the crew finished up the string 40 minutes later. They entered into the wet room and began stripping off their gear. Everyone was laughing and Jake took Gia's hand as they made their way inside.
"Could this be a Bering Sea romance?" The cameraman asked the two as they started walking to their stateroom but stopped in the galley to chat with him.
"No way, she's my sister." Jake said making an "eww" face and Gia laughed.
"How do you like working on the Northwestern so far Gia?" The cameraman said turning his attention to her.
"I love working here. Beautiful boat, great crew and Captain, and they're great guys in general."
"Who's your favorite crew member?"
"Norman is."
"Norman!" Jake and the cameraman said in unison so loud and with obvious surprise that it caused Gia to laugh and made Norman come over to them.
"What about Norman?" he asked quietly.
"I said your my favorite." Gia said unashamed, which caused Norman to blush slightly.
"What do you have to say about that Norm?" the cameraman asked. Norman was just about to answer when he realized who he was talking to and that there was a camera in his face. He simply shrugged in response and walked away, with a small smile on his face that no one noticed.
"Damn it." the cameraman said and everyone laughed.
"I though I was your favorite.." Jake asked, feigning sadness. Gia gave him a kiss on the cheek and smiled.
"You would be if you didnt snore so damn much."
"I dont." He said defensively
"You do." The cameraman said "And I have the film to prove it."
"See." Gia said laughing "Come on lets go change. We stink."
"I call the shower first!"
Gia rolled her eyes but consented. "Fine"
The cameraman followed them to their stateroom as the continued to chat freely but everyone stopped short at the sight in front of them. Gia's Kotex bag had been opened up and all the pads had been stuck against the walls, the ceiling, her bunk, and some had even been thrown on the floor. There was even, what Gia assumed to be ketchup, on the pads which no doubt was supposed to symbolize her "bleeding". The cameraman stopped rolling the camera.
"You really should keep your "girlie" shit hidden. This is a man's boat. We dont need to see it." Edgar said from behind them with a grin on his face. By then the entire crew had come over to see what was going on and stopped in their tracks when they saw what Edgar had done. No one said anything. Everyone was embarrassed for Gia and didnt find the prank to be funny at all. Gia stood staring at what Edgar had done and it took everything in her not to turn around and punch him in the face. She took a deep breath.
"Excuse me." Gia said and entered her stateroom, shutting the door behind her. She sunk to the floor and took a deep breath. She felt her eyes well up with tears but refused to cry over Edgar Hansen. She began picking up all the Kotex that was thrown across the floor and put it back in the bag. She then stood up and began to unpeel the Kotex pads that were attached to the bed, wall, and ceiling. When she was halfway done she heard a timid knock on the door. Gia wasnt in the mood to deal with anyone.
"Just give me a minute." Gia said in a beaten down tone.
The door slowly opened and Gia turned to see Norman enter the stateroom. Neither said anything to the other. Gia was sure her embarrasment was being displayed all over her face as Norman looked around at what his little brother had done. He shook his head and much to Gia's surprise began taking the Kotex pads off the walls and putting them in the bag. When he was finished he took up the bag and looked at Gia.
"I know these are ruined and you cant use them anymore, so I'm going to throw them out. But when we offload in St. Pauls in a couple weeks or so we can go to the Costco thats nearby and get you a new bag."
"Thank you." Gia replied looking at the floor.
"You dont need some now or anything right? ... I mean like.. well you dont have your...thing now or anything do you?" Norman asked scratching the back of his head.
"No, I'm fine. Thank you." Gia said looking at Norman for the first time.
"Your welcome."
Without another word Norman exited the stateroom and Gia sat down on her bunk.
"I like him." Gia thought to herself as she laid across her bunk. About 5 minutes later the door opened again and Jake entered dripping wet with a towel tied around his waist.
"Shower's free."
