Hey everyone. Hope your enjoying the story so far. For all you Norman Hansen fans out there, please dont take offense to how he's being portrayed. After all it is called fiction. Im sure he's nothing like this in real life. Reviews are always welcome. Thanks and Enjoy!
The Northwestern had now been out fishing for a month and a half and had already done two offloads. Despite the shitty weather, Sig was still hauling in good crab and even better numbers. It was easily one of the best Opilio Season's the Northwestern had ever seen, which Gia would no doubt rub in Edgar's face when the trip was over, because he was still convinced women on board were bad luck. Just as the Bering Sea had been unforgiving this season, so was Gia towards Norman. Not that he'd actually tried to apologize to her, but she was no longer pining for his affections and attention. She ignored him like she'd never even met him and on the outside she'd even appeared to be back to her old self, no longer sulking in emotional pain. In all reality though, Gia still hurt on the inside everyday. She was still very much in love with him, no matter how hard she tried not to be. For the first two weeks after Gia and Norman had their big blow-out in the wheelhouse, she'd been so angry, she swore that she hated him and would never want anything to do with him again. But she knew in her heart-of-hearts that it wasn't true. She just didn't understand how Norman could have been so cold towards her. When they first started dating, he was so sweet and loving and compassionate, even though he wasn't overly affectionate in front of the guys. How he could become so cold so fast was beyond Gia's understanding.
The Northwestern crew was resetting their last 5 pots of their last string and the winds and tides had picked up considerately. Ryan was trying to get an interview from the crew, but nobody was paying him any mind, because they were trying to focus on their tasks at hand. Gia felt bad for him, as she watched him struggle on deck, with his camera and the crew. He faced the same dangers they were facing and like them, he had a job to do too. So when Ryan came over to Gia for an interview she gave him one and he gave her a grateful smile.
"How do you feel about the weather Gia?" He asked over the raging wind.
"I can't complain."
"You dont think this weather sucks?" He ask incredulously
"Of course I do. But I can't complain or else they'll call me a cry baby." She said, gesturing with her head towards the crew, as they'd just set the 3rd to last pot.
"What are you looking forward to most out of this season?"
"Getting my check and going home, so I can slip into a coma for a few days."
"Any special plans for when you go home?"
"Not really," Gia shrugged, but then added "My sister lives in California. I think it's about time I paid her a visit and see my nephew Tyler."
"That's really nice."
"How about you? Anything special?"
Ryan was somewhat in shock. Noone ever asked him anything back, because it wasn't about him. Interviews were about the captain and crew, but that didn't stop Ryan from engaging in personal conversation.
"Actually I was planning on proposing to my girlfriend when we got back. We've been together about 3 years now. I think it's time I took that final step."
"Ryan, that's great!" She exclaimed, giving him a hug which he readily returned. Gia was just about to say more when Norman's hard voice called out to her.
"How about you stop running your mouth with the camera guy for two seconds and do your job!" He snapped, gesturing towards the next pot that needed to be baited.
Everyone stared at Norman in shock, but Gia simply ignored him and told Ryan she'd be right back, before darting across the deck and rebaiting the pot. After she'd done so, she went back to Ryan and the bait station, grateful that the next pot they'd set would be their last.
"So you and Norman still at odds with eachother?" Ryan asked, though he was no longer filming her. That's one reason why Gia always liked Ryan. He did his job but he also had a sense of humanity and knew when certain things should only be said in private.
"I'd say so." Gia said and a hint of sadness was heard in her voice.
"Things will work out with you two, ya know." Ryan said softly.
"Hello! Pot! Bait! Now!" Norman shouted and Gia rolled her eyes.
"You really think so Ryan?" She said sarcastically and Ryan had to laugh. He watched as Gia ran to rebait the last pot of the string and began filiming her. He got right up to the pot, to get a good shot of her getting in and hooking the bait. When she climbed out, Ryan decided to wipe his camera lens and didn't even see the pot slip from the launcher. All he heard was Sig call "Watch out!" from the loud hailer and then someone push and knock him to the floor, landing on top of him. When he looked to see who'd saved his life, he came face to face with a smiling Gia. He hugged her tightly as he watched the crew scramble to get the pot back on to the launcher and into the Bering Sea.
"Gia! Ryan! You guys okay!" Sig called out to them, worry apparent in his voice.
"Roger!" They yelled at the same time and everyone heard Sig let out a sigh of relief, forgetting he was still on speaker. Gia lifted herself up from Ryan, and then outstretched her arm to give him a helping hand which he graciously accepted. Everyone, except Norman, came up to them to make sure they were alright and tell Gia how proud they were about her quick thinking. Only once did Gia glance over at Norman, who was standing behind the controls to the crane, and she could swear she saw a mixture of fear and relief in his eyes, but she decided not to give it much thought.
Everyone soon went to the wet room, stripping their gear, and headed inside for food and sleep. The guys went straight to their staterooms, except Gia, who sat at the galley table eating a bowl of cereal when Ryan gave her a wink as he was passing by.
"Thanks for saving my life." He said before ascending the stairs to the wheelhouse.
"Don't mention it." Gia said, shrugging. Just then Norman had emerged from his stateroom and spotted Gia sitting in the galley. He marched over to her and all traces of the concern she saw in his eyes moments earlier were gone. Instead it was replaced by the hard glare that she'd become so accustomed to seeing.
"Just so you know...That was the stupidest thing you've ever done!" Norman growled before retreating back to the stateroom he'd just come from. Gia stared after him in shock.
"What the hell was that about?"
