We know the scene in Edinburgh when Vision and Wanda are attacked, and then what happened is the rest of Infinity War. This chapter is a passage of events just before and after.
Wanda ran her hands up Vision's body as he kissed her on the bed, she smiled as he paused to kiss her neck and he heard her giggle with pleasure before moving his face back to her lips. They weren't new to making love in the two years on the run, but each time it felt like the first for Wanda. She stared up at the ceiling breathlessly and reached out to Vision who took her hand in his, he raised it to his lips and kissed it gently.
"Another holiday over," Wanda muttered as Vision pulled her against his side.
"The Accords will run out soon."
"Do you really believe that?"
"I have to, I will never stop protecting you," he smiled. "Do you want anything?"
"I'd love a hot chocolate please?"
Vision nodded and got off the bed, "I'm sorry I picked one of the rainiest places to have our next holiday." He smiled as he poured a sachet of chocolate into a mug as the kettle boiled.
"Anywhere with you, is paradise for me," she picked up the bar menu and read it to herself.
"Here you go, darling," he gave the mug to her before he walked over to the windows to pull the curtains back.
Suddenly Vision buckled slightly, grabbing his head painfully and Wanda looked up in alarm.
"Vis, is it the stone again?"
"It's like it's speaking to me, but I can't work out what it's saying," he hissed again and Wanda went to his side quickly taking his hands in hers.
"Hey."
Vision kissed her hand and sighed, "can you feel anything, or hear it?"
Wanda placed her hand on the glowing stone, her forehead creased as she focused on it but shook her head, "no, only you."
Vision sighed with a smile and cupped her face in between his hands gently bringing her lips to his, they kissed in front of the windows ignoring the rain that hammered against the windows and Wanda held him tightly against herself before he let go of her.
"I have to pack," he said softly.
"Don't take too long."
The rain eventually eased off and they decided to go for a late walk to grab a meal from Wanda's favourite café, she squeezed his hand as they walked and he smiled at her.
"There's a 10:00 am train. That would give us the rest of the night."
Vision nodded. "What if I missed it?"
"Well then you could get the 11, which would..."
He cut her off, "what if I missed all of them?"
"Vision, I don't understand? You gave your word to Stark that you would go back."
"But what if this time I stayed, with you?"
"We made promises to our teams, Vis."
"But never to each other. Wanda, we've been stealing these moments together for two years, but we've never really thought about just leaving everyone behind. This is all new to me, but well, I," he stammered. "I think it works and..."
Wanda nodded. "It works."
"Stay with me."
Wanda looked over his shoulder and caught sight of the news, she gasped missing Vision's next remark and he saw the headline. "New York was attacked. Who are they?"
Vision narrowed his eyes at the creatures standing in the middle of the street, "I don't know, but I think that's who the stone was warning me about."
The next banner flashed up reading TONY STARK MISSING and Vision sighed immediately knowing that his plan to run away with Wanda now couldn't happen.
"I have to go."
"Vision, wait. If that's true, then leaving puts you in danger."
"Wanda..." His voice cut off as pain flooded his abdomen. and he heard Wanda shriek.
Five years later.
Wanda woke up lying on the forest floor and watched as her body reformed itself from dust, she looked around hoping to see Vision's body but there was no one in her immediate vicinity. She was still in Wakanda which wasn't helpful, but before she could even start planning her next move Dr Strange appeared from a portal in front of her.
"Miss Maximoff, you need to come with me."
"But where is everyone?"
"They're all back. They're appearing all over the place in the last places they were before the snap. I'm getting everyone back together. Captain Rogers needs us."
"How long has it been?"
Stephen raised an eyebrow, "are you sure you want the answer to that?"
Wanda stood up, "yes."
"Five years for them, no time at all for us."
Wanda paled. "Take me to Rogers."
The battle was won, Thanos had been destroyed along with his entire army and Tony Stark had given his life for humanity's survival. Wanda roamed what was left of the Avengers compound trying to locate what had been Vision's quarters, but there was nothing left all apart from metal frames and water from the flooding. Her foot impacted with something solid and she looked down at what appeared to be a safe buried in the debris, she knelt and used her powers to break it open. Documents fell out and her heart fluttered as a small box rolled onto the ground, she didn't dare open it and instead found an envelope addressed to her, she unsealed it gently but was interrupted hearing someone clear their throat.
"Wanda?"
Wanda looked up, "Steve."
"That was good fighting back there, I'm proud of you."
"It didn't bring me peace, he's still gone," her eyes turned slightly red. "Where is he?"
Steve froze on the spot, "we couldn't leave him there, Wanda. And he wasn't ours."
"Where is he!"
Steve sighed. "It was the only place. He was taken to SWORD headquarters."
Wanda nodded. "Goodbye Steve, we shan't meet again."
Steve watched as she took off to the skies and shook his head, Stephen walked over to him and followed his gaze.
"She's never going to forgive me."
"Give her closure, and she'll be okay," Stephen smiled. "We better clear up."
Wanda made her way back to Edinburgh to pick up her stuff, but her heart was aching at how she would feel getting back there. When she had left it, Vision had been alive, and now he was gone. She landed and realised she was still in her battle clothes, she sighed and entered the hotel and over to the desk.
"Can I help you?"
Wanda shifted on the spot awkwardly, "this is hard to explain, but I've been gone for five years. I was wondering if I could pick my stuff up?"
The receptionist bit her lip, "I'm sorry miss, but anything that stays in lost property for more than a year is either burned or given away. There's nothing I can do."
Wanda nodded. "It's okay, it was a long shot."
"Is there anything else I can help you with?"
"No, that's all. Thank you," she smiled unhappily and turned away, she had nothing. No one and nothing. But there was one person.
Clint embraced his family wrapping his arms tightly around his three children then kissed Laura passionately. "You've all grown up."
"Very funny, Clint. Say hello to Nathaniel."
"Hey buddy, last time I saw you, well you were there," he pointed to Laura's belly.
Nathaniel laughed. "Daddy!"
"Go on inside all of you, and we'll make brownies, go on. I need a word with your ma."
Laura smiled as their children ran inside. "I'm sorry about Nat. So so sorry."
Clint nodded with a sigh, "it was the only way, and she wasn't going to argue. I couldn't stop her."
"Are you okay? How's the team?"
"We're done. I'm going back to Georgia for Tony's funeral at the end of the week. We'll honour Nat there too."
Laura nodded then spotted Wanda land behind her husband, "we have company."
Clint turned around, "Wanda?"
Wanda wiped tears away, "there's nothing left."
Laura took control, "oh honey. Clint, look after the kids, I'll help her out."
Wanda sat on the edge of the bed as Laura looked for some clothes, "thank you. Everything I owned at the hotel is gone, including my money and phone."
"We're more than happy to help you, we're on the same team. Here, although it might be a tiny bit big."
Wanda smiled. "That's too kind," she got up and crossed the room into the small en-suite to get changed. "Once I've sorted myself out, I'll be out of your hair."
Laura tutted. "Take all the time you need, we have a spare room. My house is always open to those who have saved my husband."
Wanda walked out in a black spotty dress, "it fits fine, thank you."
"My pleasure, now come and get some food. You must be starving."
Clint watched Wanda at the table and once finished eating he stood up, "Wanda, can I see you outside please?"
She nodded solemnly and followed him out, he wrapped an arm around her and she burst into tears on his shoulder, "I've lost everything Clint. What do I do now?"
"You fight and keep going. Believe me, I've done it. In those times when everyone was gone; you and my family. I became a monster and Natasha pulled me back to the team, and that's what you have to do. Pull yourself back to the team."
"I can't," she shook her head.
"Come to the funeral and we can say goodbye to the people we love properly."
Wanda nodded. "That might help."
That night, Wanda had her first nightmare since the events with Thanos. Vision was alive, but the stone had been ripped out of his head, the light in his eyes had gone out and he was sobbing that she had let him die. Wanda pleaded with him that it had been the only way, but he continued to blame her for his death. The Avengers hadn't won, and she was facing Thanos alone, he laughed as each of her energy bursts ricocheted off his sword and hit her, and she woke up with a yelp before breaking down in quiet sobs.
"I'm sorry Vision, I'm sorry," she whispered and looked over to where she had put the ring box. "It's not fair."
Realising that she wasn't going to be able to get back to sleep, she opened Chrome on her new phone Clint had got for her and searched for the SWORD Headquarters. Vision had been taken from her without so much as a word of please, and she wanted to say goodbye.
The week came and went with Tony Stark's funeral in the middle of it, Wanda had sorted herself out financially and had decided that even without Vision she was going to start her life in the place he had bought for her. The deed was just a plot of land, but if that was where she was going to live, he would be with her. Her brother had been buried, and Vision deserved that too. It was quite a way to Florida from where she was, but it was a journey that had to be made to speak to the new director. The building was an ugly monument, and it made her feel cold looking at it, she pulled into the car park of dull coloured vehicles against her bright red one, and she left the envelope on the seat beside her. She didn't know how she was going to take Vision back to the car, but first, she had to find him, there was only one thing she wasn't expecting and that was the hostility towards her at reception.
"I know that the Vision is here, don't lie to me," she twisted her hands together fighting the tears wanting to escape. "Please? I deserve to say goodbye, as closure." She looked up at the security camera as the guard on the desk was distracted by a phone call with a glare.
"He's expecting you, Miss Maximoff. Go on in."
Wanda pushed herself back from the desk and strode over to the double doors ignoring security calling after her that she would need to be buzzed in, she fired a sonic blast at the doors and they burst open for her, "I've got it, thanks!"
"Miss Maximoff!" Tyler Hayward jumped up as Wanda pushed the door open aggressively and entered his office. "It's a pleasure."
"And you are?"
"Director Tyler Hayward. You're here to see the Vision, is that so. Recover the body?"
"I'm his next of kin. When I was snapped back, he was gone."
"Follow me, I have something to show you."
"And then I can take him home?"
Tyler frowned. "Just see for yourself."
The next few moments were a heart-wrenching blur for Wanda as her eyes lay on her Vision chopped up as if he was some experimental body for lab workers to dissect, anger flooded through her veins and before she even knew what she had done, glass was all over the floor around him and people were running in terror as she approached the table. She rested her hand over Vision's forehead now empty of the stone and life, and she cried softly not feeling a pulse or light. Her final plan was now in ruin, she had nothing left and she would never get him back, she turned away from the lab leaving guards confused and the room in pieces and let herself be escorted out without a word. All she could do now was to go to Westview and bury the envelope and ring that Vision had got for her and leave that life behind. She got back into the car and began the journey checking the satnav on occasion to ensure she was going the right way, and it wasn't long before main roads became side streets. Westview was quaint but lifeless, and that was probably why Vision had chosen it, so they could live out their lives almost secretly and away from city dwellers, but every corner just hurt her heart more and more, and by the time she reached their plot all she felt was grief at how little there was. She had no one to build a life with, only an envelope with a note 'to grow old in' written inside a pink love heart. She fell to her knees and wept, not knowing the consequences she was about to create.
