Chapter 1
(A.N. This is a Hotchniss centered story set in and around season 5 after the episode 100. However, it is different from what happens in the show. Instead of getting an abortion when she was a teen, Emily kept it and had a daughter named Lindsay, and Foyet was not killed by Hotch at first. Also, just for clarification to explain a discrepancy I realized I have already made, I am saying that Emily was born in 1980 instead of 1970 like in the show. I also will write some smut and about Emily's past. Also slight pieces of Jeid. Please enjoy and give feedback.)
George Foyet A.K.A (The Reaper) has been stalking SSA Aaron Hotchner, his son and estranged ex-wife for months. For their safety, Haley and Jack were placed in witness protection. Foyet found them, lured them back to their home, and has already killed Haley, but Jack went and hid. He is about to kill Hotch too when he hears sirens and realizes that he needs to leave if he does not want to get caught. He stabs him in the chest quickly and fleas.
When the Behavioral Analysis Unit arrives at a the scene, they find Hotch unconscious and bleeding out. The paramedics rush him to the hospital and Emily rode with. In the ambulance, Hotch is in and out of consciousness and tells Emily that Jack is hiding in his office; she lets the rest of the team know and they find him safe and sound. When the ambulance arrives at the hospital, Hotch is rushed to emergency surgery. Hours later the surgeons come out and told Emily that they were able to save him, but that he had to be put in a medically induced coma to help his body heal.
One month later Hotch still has not woken up and the team is no where closer to finding Foyet. Emily has hardly left his side since he had gotten out of surgery, hoping to be the first person he sees when he wakes up; she had been secretly dating her unit chief for the past 2 years. It is around 9:30 at night and Emily almost dozes off to sleep when some of the machines start making unusual sounds.
"Hotch?" she says in a daze looking around the hospital room. Emily calls for one of the nurses as Aaron starts to wake up.
"Jack and Haley, what happened to them?" he asked with a raspy voice after the chest tube was removed from his throat.
Emily hated that she had to be the one to tell him again what had happened that day, but was glad he was awake and talking.
"Foyet killed Haley and he almost killed you as well, but we got to you in time. Jack was safe though, you told us where he was hiding and he didn't see anything. He's grieving the loss of his mom, obviously, but Jessica and I have been with him mostly. Right now though, he's with JJ since I'm here and Jessica had to work." she answered moving closer to the bed; settling beside his right arm.
A nurse came in and said he seemed to be doing fine and that the doctor would be around in a little while to talk to him.
"Are you close to finding him?"
"PG and Kevin are tracking all the leads we originally had on him, but nothing has come up yet. I've also reached out to some of my contacts at Interpol to see if he might have left the country." she said leaning her head on his shoulder.
"At least we haven't stopped searching." he returned rubbing his hand along her thigh.
"To be honest, I've been by your side for most of the past month waiting for you to wake up. I mean, I do go home pretty much every night to be with Lindsay and Jack, but during the day I mostly do my work from here. I was so scared of loosing you Aaron, I don't think I could have been doing this without you." Emily said starting to cry.
"Hey, it's ok, you don't have to worry about me, I'm not going anywhere." he reassured her.
"Yes I do Aaron, especially now." she put an emphasis on the word 'now' because she had something important to tell him, and placed her hand over his chest.
"You will always have me, now and forever, but why did you say 'now' like it was more important?" he asks confused.
"Because now, we both have another little person to live for." she tells her boyfriend as she places his hand on her not-so-flat stomach. Hotch follows her notion and is surprised to feel a slight bump. The woman that he loved was going to have his child.
"Emily, are you serious? How far along are you?" Hotch said with a little grin on his face knowing that he had knocked her up.
"I just finished the first trimester, I promise I was going to tell you sooner, but I didn't get a chance to before everything happened. I also didn't want to tell the team before I told you, but JJ and Penelope figured it out you know I'm a horrible liar when it comes to them and you." she said jokingly with a smile.
She still had his hand on her stomach and looked into his dark brown eyes. She was going to speak more, but was cut off with an unexpected kiss.
"You know we have to tell Strauss about us now right?" Hotch says after a few minutes of silence.
"I know, but can we wait just a few more weeks, and enjoy the news with just ourselves before we tell?" she pleaded with him, wrapping his hand in hers.
"Emily!" Aaron started to say in protest.
"Please Aaron. The last time I was pregnant I was sent away and scorned. Plus, I think we both need some time to fully process all of this before we tell anyone else.
"Ok, ok, we can wait just a little while, but it'll be better on both of us to tell her than for Strauss to find out another way." he came to a consensus.
"Ok, thank you, I do need to tell Lindsay though before she figures it out. She'll be pissed if I don't tell her." Emily leaned in for another kiss.
"Everything will be alright. We'll figure all this out together." he said reassuring her, and returning the kiss.
"What if Jack hates me and Lindsay and the new baby?" she said starting to get panicked
"Jack adores you and Lindsay, as do I. They'll be great siblings to each other, and to the new baby when it arrives." he moves his arms around her.
"Don't you think that'll be very awkward for them; making a completely different family unit?" Emily asked knowing about an optimal family dynamic and how it's not good to change things suddenly.
"We'll make sure that doesn't happen. We'll keep Haley's memory alive for him while also continuing to live on with our new family." He says full of optimism.
"Ok, but what about Lindsay? It's just been the two of us since she was born."
"I know you two are very close, but I think she will be ok with it. I mean, she has opened up to me and the team a lot since you joined."
"Well, it has been just me and her since she was born. I don't know how she'd feel about us expanding our family and having to share me with Jack and the new baby."
Hotch's eyes light up when he hears Jack's name again and immediately asks when he can see him.
"Since you're up and alert, we can talk to the doctors and see when they say you can see him."
"Ok that would be great. Look, I'm sure that it would be difficult for her at first, but Lindsay will be the best big sister." he says.
"Thank you for saying that." she gets off the bed and starts to walk around the room.
"Emily, there is something that I've been wanting to ask you for a while now, but I just couldn't find the right way or time to." Hotch says, he was about to ask Emily a very important question.
"Wait, could you hold on for just a minute, JJ is calling me, I better take it." Emily says interrupting him.
Hotch just smiles and reaches his hand to stroke Emily's hair telling her that it can wait. He knows that he wants to spend the rest of his days waking up next to her, and could wait for as long as it takes to ask the most important question of his life for the second time.
"I'll be right outside in the hall, it should only take a minute."
(On the phone)
"Hey Em, how's Hotch?" JJ said on the other end.
"He's awake and seems to be doing great. We're waiting to see if the doctor thinks he could see the kids tomorrow when they get out of school."
"Oh, that's great. Let me know what they say." JJ was always there with support for her friends.
"We were also going to tell them about the baby tomorrow."
"Awe, was Hotch as excited as I thought he would be?"
"Yes, he was so happy, he's wanting all of us to create like this big blended family and I'm not sure how that would happen."
"I'm sure you'll figure it out Em. Oh, the reason that I called is that Lindsay got suspended from school earlier because she got caught skipping school and for fighting on school grounds."
"Oh great! I probably know who she got in a fight with too. Why does my daughter have to be so much like me?" she asked.
"Emily, you know how kids are at that age. You're doing great, you've only got a few more years that you really have to worry about."
"I really owe my mother an apology, cause payback's a bitch. I'll be there soon just let me say goodbye to Hotch."
"Of course, and I'm sure she won't be just like you." JJ reassured her
"No, I'm sorry that my daughter is such a pain in the ass sometimes, see you in a few." Emily says and ends the phone call.
She goes back into Hotch's room and the doctor is talking.
"Ok Mr.Hotchner, you are looking a lot better and I think that you will be free to go home in a couple of days, as long as you take it easy and no overexerting yourself." the doctor was saying.
"Thank you doctor. One more question for you, my girlfriend and I were wandering if our children could come visit me tomorrow since I am awake now?" Hotch asks anxiously.
"I do not see why that would be a problem as long as you keep making progress like this. I'll check back in with you before I leave for the night."
"So what was the phone call about?" Hotch asked when the doctor was completely out of the room.
"Well Lindsay got suspended from school for getting caught skipping school and fighting and now I'm going to pick her up from JJ's."
"Oh, do you know who she got in a fight with?"
"I mean, I know she has a boyfriend, and I had PG find everything she could on him, which wasn't good, but Lindsay still sees him. She also has a
few friends in her class, but since I haven't gotten any phone calls from their parents I have to assume it was the boyfriend."
"You can't blame yourself Em. She is a teenager now and she will do some stupid things."
"I truly don't know how my mother survived raising me; I rebelled against her and her policies for most of my teen years. I hated everything about the situation, especially her moving me around the world. I mean, now I'm thankful for all the experiences I gained from that, but I hated it then." Emily said. "The only reason that I let her keep seeing this boy is because I want her to see for herself how horrible he is; and yet somehow I still feel like a bad mother."
"Hey, look at me." he said lifting her head to meet his eyes, "You are a great mom to Lindsay, you're great with Jack, and you will be great with this little one when they make their arrival." he said placing his hand over her stomach.
"Aaron, thank you for the words of encouragement, but have you ever had to raise a teenager while preparing for the arrival of another child?" she asked him, realizing how chaotic her life is going to become in a few months.
"Well I did have to take care of my younger brother when he was a teenager, but I think it's different with your real child."
"A little bit, but thanks for the sympathy."
"Now go be a great mom and talk to your 15 year old."
"Thank you Aaron, and what were you going to say earlier?"
"Don't worry about that now, we can talk about it later."
Emily kissed Aaron, told him goodbye, and left the room. She leaves the hospital on the way to JJ's to talk to her daughter. It does not take her long and is there in 30 minutes.
Emily knocked on JJ's door and she came and opened it.
"Hey, I have her waiting on you in the living room." JJ said welcoming Emily into her home.
"Lindsay Elizabeth Prentiss!" she brushed by JJ heading towards the living room.
Lindsay Prentiss was the spitting image of her mother; she was very tall for 15, had pale ivory skin, and long silky black hair. She was also smart like her mom, but she's very shy at times.
"Ma'am?"
"Would you like to explain your actions today?"
"Well, it's not as bad as you think."
"No, I think it is. You got suspended from school!"
"You know Cole, right?" she started,
"Of course I do and you know I'm not his biggest fan."
"He kept texting me throughout the day, since I hadn't been able to see him much over the past month with everything going on with Aaron, (Aaron is what both Hotch and Lindsay had decided she would call him after Emily and Hotch started dating officially.) and to be honest I was starting to get bored in school because I have already learned what my teachers have been teaching." Lindsay was explaining to her mother.
"We left school for a little while, at least until the lunch period was over and we went and got some frozen yogurt, then right back to the school. We were almost clear too when we were sneaking back into class, but the principals found us and they just gave us a detention for the time being. Then during PE we were playing soccer and Allie and I were both captains for teams. (Allie and Lindsay are enemies and have never gotten along.) My team was beating hers and she was mad about it, so she tried to get us penalized and then I got mad and started a confrontation. She got more mad and threatened to hurt Jack and the next thing I knew, my fist was beside her jaw and then I was on top of her using the self defense moves you taught me."
"Lindsay, why would you skip school though; you're such a good student, and you are involved in so many school activities." she asked her daughter.
"I don't know mom, maybe I'm tired of being one of the good kids; like where has it gotten me in life?" Lindsay snapped at her mother
"Lindsay! You have had all As since you were in elementary school, are on student leadership, are fluent in multiple languages, and do multiple sports. That is what being one of the good kids has gotten you."
"But maybe I didn't want to do that stuff. I thought you would be more mad about me fighting than skipping." she protested.
"Ok, well, we're leaving now and we'll discuss your punishment once we get home and I have had a chance to think and let this headache go away."
Before they were about to leave, they heard footsteps on the stairs; they turned around and Jack was standing there with a sleepy look in his eyes.
"Emmy? What are you doing here, are you coming to pick us up?" he said in his sweet little voice.
"I'm sorry Emily." JJ said coming behind Jack. "I tried to get him to go back to sleep without him knowing you were here." Emily bent down to be eye level with him,
"Hey buddy, did you wake up from your sleep? Come here I have some good news for you." Emily said in a soft voice.
"What is it Emmy?" Jack said excitedly.
"Your daddy woke up today, and the doctors said if he does good tomorrow, you and Lindsay could come visit him."
"Yay!" she heard from Jack.
"Now you should go back to bed, because the sooner you go to sleep, the sooner you get to see your dad."
"Ok Emmy, goodnight and good night Lindsay." Jack said as he was running back up the stairs. Emily and Lindsay left and went back to their apartment.
On their way home, they stopped and got a pepperoni pizza (their favorite) for dinner.
"Hey mom?" Lindsay asked when they left the pizza place.
"What's up Linds?" (That was Emily's little pet name for her).
"I was wondering, since I haven't seen you a lot in a while, if we could maybe do a girl's night?" A girl's night was when the two of them would watch a movie, and talk and hangout while devouring crazy amounts of junk food. Emily thought about it for a few seconds before responding.
"I don't think that's the best for tonight, but we could maybe put on a movie when we get home." Emily told her.
In the car they were talking about what had happened in Lindsay's life in the past month, Emily hated that she had spent so much time with Hotch at the hospital instead of being with her daughter. She couldn't describe the way she felt about him though, he was the one person she turned to when life got crazy. Growing up in different places caused her to not make many friends and to close herself off from others. Since she become a member of the BAU she truly felt that she had a family.
"Hey kiddo when we get inside I need you to find Sergio and feed him, then we can watch the movie." Emily said with a genuine smile on her face.
"Ok, can we drink wine tonight?" Lindsay said as they got out of the car. Emily normally did not allow her daughter to consume wine regularly, nor did she plan on her asking that, and didn't want to ruin the surprise that was already planned for tomorrow.
"Not tonight, you got suspended remember." she said hoping that would be the end of the conversation.
"Ok, so I won't drink, but what about a glass for you. I know you well enough that you would never refuse a good glass of red."
"Lindsay, I've already said no, and like you said, it has to be a good glass for me to not refuse." Emily said while they were walking to the elevator of the building.
"Ok, but what's with you tonight. Did something happen? Are you pregnant?" Lindsay said jokingly as they got in the elevator.
"How would you feel if I was pregnant?" Emily said keeping the manner light.
"Well, I mean, I think it would be neat to have a younger sibling, plus you'll have to have someone else around here when I go off to college in a few years." Lindsay said.
"Don't make me think of that. You make me feel old." Emily said with a sigh.
"Well it's not my fault that Grandma Lizzie moved you from place to place and so you had to do bad things to fit in resulting in me happening." she said walking out of the elevator and down the hall to their door.
Hearing her daughter recount the events that lead to her existence made Emily cringe about her life before being a parent.
"Don't remind me of that time in my life." she said reaching for her key, "You're the only good thing that came of that, now go feed Sergio and I'll pick out a movie for us to watch."
Emily's apartment was the typical 2 bed 2 bath with floor to ceiling windows on the walls that faced outward. She loved the view she got of D.C. whenever she looked out. Her living room had a big bookshelf that held her favorite books and memories. She looked around at it, the covers of some of the books were in other languages, and photos of the people her family. She saw a photo from Lindsay's twelfth birthday party; Emily hadn't been on the team for long, but everyone came and that was the first time Lindsay had met all of them.
She picked the movie Legally Blonde and the girls spent the night just catching up on what Emily had missed and making jokes. Once the movie was over they started cleaning up before going to bed.
"So you really would like having a baby around?" she brought up again later.
"Yea, but that would never happen. Would it?" Lindsay answered.
"I wouldn't count that out just yet. I still have a little period where I could get pregnant."
"True, but you wouldn't, would you?"
"I mean, things are getting pretty serious with Aaron. I wouldn't be surprised if he and Jack were in our lives from now on." Emily told her.
"Well are you going to get married?" Lindsay asked innocently.
"We haven't talked about that, but most likely no because Jack's mom just died and we don't want to confuse him too much right now. Plus, I didn't get married to your father when I got pregnant with you did I?" Emily told her daughter.
"True, but I thought that was only because you didn't have any contact with him after you found out about me." Lindsay said back.
"Why don't you ever talk about him?" she asked.
"That was a very dark time in my life Linds. I had just moved to another new school in a different country for the 3rd time in 2 years. You know I did not like your grandmother very much at that time too, I was very rebellious, and sometimes that meant doing really bad things." Emily reminded her daughter about before she was born.
"Then I found out I was pregnant with you, I was scared, and your father wanted nothing to do with us when I told him. I was so scared to tell your grandmother that she didn't find out until I was like already 4 months along, but she was amazing and really helped me through it."
"Ok, now we have to talk about today." Emily continued.
"Why, do we have to?" Lindsay asked.
"You know I have to punish you for what happened at school, so I'm going to be taking your technology for a month, and you will only be going to school, here, or the BAU depending on what's going on in the afternoons." Emily said trying to be stern, but the smell of the pizza was starting to make her sick.
"That's going to be annoying, but ok." she said.
"Ok, though that's not for you to decide, but you go get ready for bed and I'll be in there in a minute."
Lindsey's bedroom was travel themed of places all over the world. Her three walls were a soft purple and had grey accents throughout. She had some old luggage that she and her mother had decorated that she used for some storage, and miniature versions of various landmarks on a shelf above her desk. She also had her own little collection of books like her mother, also some being in other languages; she had picked up her mother's knack for languages as well. Her bed was full sized with plain grey and light blue sheets; above her bed she had a board with pictures from different events. She had the picture from her twelfth birthday, a few of her with her grandparents, when she was a baby, and others from her events the team had been at for her.
Lindsay thought about how the team really did feel like family to her; Hotch was like a dad to her since she didn't get to have one, JJ and Garcia were her aunts she could go to for anything she couldn't talk about with her mom, Derek and Spencer were her uncles who'd always protect her, well Derek would protect her and Spencer was good if she needed help with homework, and Rossi was her awesome Italian grandfather who could always make her smile and give her some type of pasta, and would buy her just about anything; especially since he and her mom were close as father and daughter.
Emily came in and took Lindsay's phone, tablet, and power cord for her tv.
"Goodnight Linds! See you in the morning; love you." Emily said sweetly.
"Goodnight mom." Lindsay said as she started getting ready for bed. It was around midnight now and they were both exhausted. Emily went and made sure the door was locked and went to her room and went to bed.
A few hours later Emily was awaken by a loud bang at her door.
End of chapter one
(A.N.2. Ok, thank you for reading this far. This is my first time actually publishing my work, and I'm quite nervous for how this will turn out. I have several ideas of what I want to happen and to keep with the way the show is. I will definitely take any criticism, tips, or other inspiration for the story and hope you enjoy.)
