"And that, my little colt, is how you came to be. Or at the very least, how you had the chance to come to be, for your darling dam was that horse that the catamount attacked, wasn't she, Agarion." I scratch the chestnut colt's ears as Stanfrith sniffs my hair.
A sweet voice calls, "Are you telling tales to the foal of Stanfrith again, Lavanberthia?"
I glance up to see Lady Éowyn smiling down at me.
"Of course, milady. It would be a terrible shame for Agarion not to know of his heritage."
"Of course, an utterly innocent gesture, not inspired by your new finding of horses being cognizant of our language and words. And certainly not told in hopes that this foal might be obliged to you for your saving of his dam. And most certainly not in hopes that you may undermine my ownership with tales inspiring obedience to you within this dear foal's heart."
"Most certainly, milady."
We stared at each other, each of us trying desperately not to break and smile first.
We lasted all of five heartbeats before descending into giggles.
