Should have known from the first time she cheerfully strode through those doors without her beloved Addison I was in for something big.
"Miss Glassbill?!" She pounded cheerfully on the oak door. I looked up to give her the alright to come in but it seems she already took it upon herself to enter without consent. She seemed excited as she strolled the small way up to my wornout desk where I was seated.
"I have a new assignment for you!" Miss Wren set a large worn out leather folder and a brand new journal with some pencils held on to the cover with binding ribbon down on top of my already quite large pile of work.
"Seriously?" I didn't mean to sound like I was whining, but I had already spent what felt like four months just completing the last little task of organizing every child under the care of an Ymbryne alphabetically. "Pardon me if I sound lazy, but can this not be given to someone else? I have quite a bit of work to do for my own line of work that has to be done or I will start to get complaints!"
Miss Wren shook her head, the erie smile glued to her thin lips never fading as she then said something I have never heard said to me, or possibly any other woman working here.
"All of your other assignments are on hold until further notice." She walked over to my single dusty window, one hand gripped the window sill, the other drawing a smiley face in the dust. "Think of this as your only assignment from now until it is complete. It is an extremely time sensitive matter." Her light blue dress swayed as she turned back to me this time. "You are one of the very few Ymbrynes we have decided to be entrusted with this assignment. you leave tommrrow morning for America." Her smile dropped for a quick second. They say the eyes are the window to the soul and within those seconds I could see the pure agony in her green shimmering eyes. "look those documents over alright?"
"I'm sorry, I don't think I'm hearing you correctly.
all of my assignments, ALL 12 of them are "On hold?!" Some of them cant just be left "on hold!" they're important!" I was much louder than I was originally intending, I could see it in her shocked face, but it soon diluted back into that smile.
"tsk tsk tsk, Rosalina Glassbill always so devoted to your work...I admire that, truly I do. Me and a few others will complete them while you are gone, don't worry about them." Her happiness and smiling irked me in ways I didn't even know were possible. it was fake, a facade hiding something much more dark and sinister she didn't seem all too ready to tell me about.
"Be ready at 5:30 AM tomorrow. Boat leaves at 6:15 sharp. She patted my shoulder. "Pack your essentials and get some rest. You have a long trip ahead of you." and with that she was gone, shutting my door quietly, leaving me to my thoughts.
"What could be that important?" I asked myself out loud. "She hates her own paperwork, and she's going to willingly do mine?" I swiped the rather thick folder off my desk, opening the rather worn cover. One side contained several neatly stapled packets, the other side held a set of freshly written directions, so fresh the ink was smeared onto the other paper adjacent in the folder.
"Visit each loop in America with Miss Treecreeper and Miss E. Finch listed below, survey them to see if there are any survivors, (ymbrynes or peculiars). if so, follow the instructions detailed on page 4. if not, close the loop. Any bodies found, report immediately and keep loop open, tag each body found. A peculiar undertaker will prepare them for burial.
Enclosed are pictures of each Ymbryne, there children, and there loop details, along with a few letters. write all findings I'm the journal provided.
Be safe, and don't get caught. if things get too dangerous, evacuate the area immediately.
May the Birds be forever on your side.
-B. Wren
Sorry this is so short, it's just a prelouge to what's to come. if anyone has any ideas or Ymbrynes/peculiars to toss out I'm totally down to listen to them in the comments or PM's. Thanks:)
I'm used to writing in 3rd POV for real books, so I might keep this style of first person, or I might change it, I'm unsure as of right now.
