AN: hello and welcome to the third chapter, I hope you enjoy and disclaimer I do not own any non oc characters.
It had been 2 weeks since the combat exam and Annabeth, Disco, Harry and Nico were almost excited for initiation, partially because they couldn't find much to do apart from wandering round vale gathering supplies or just chilling in their hotel.
As they headed to the airship that was taking all the students to beacon, Annabeth was trying to come up with a way to twist the hand of fate and put them all on the same team, without help from the others though as they had all agreed that even if they were on different teams it wouldn't change much and they didn't even know how the teams were going to be decided. Finally Annabeth let the issue rest and they boarded the bullhead, they all began scanning their surroundings noticing that everyone looked around 17 apart from one girl in a red dress who seemed only 15, they also noticed the vast assortment of weapons and outfits, it seemed that not many people wore armour and those who did seemed to only wear it as an accessory rather than for protection, they also noticed one boy with blonde hair who looked quite sick and whilst many carried extravagant weapons he had a simple sword.
After landing the blonde immediately ran off to be sick and everyone else calmly filled out avoiding the puddle of vomit and headed towards beacon tower and seeing the demigods followed assuming the others new where to go. They arrived in a big hall with a stage at the front; Ozpin was stood there in front of a microphone and a stern looking woman with blonde hair, glasses and a riding crop in her hand.
"you have travelled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and learn new skills, and when you have finished you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people, but I look amongst you and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose direction, you assume knowledge will free you of this but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far it is up to you to take the first step" Ozpin said seriously
"You will gather in the ball room tonight, tomorrow your initiation begins" the woman said as she and Ozpin walked away
"Well that was cheery" Harry whispered to the others, who began sniggering as they headed to the ball room
"Well there certainly are a lot of people here" Annabeth remarked
"It feels a bit like the Hermes cabin but bigger" Nico responded as the other two nodded in agreement
The group continued talking until they fell asleep.
The next day
As people began to stir the four demigods went down to get some breakfast and a healthy one at that consisting of pancakes, waffles, and chocolate syrup. After breakfast they geared up in the locker room and headed to initiation passing a bubbly girl with short ginger talking to an emotionless boy with shoulder length black hair, a white haired girl, a red haired girl and the boy who was sick having a heated debate and the young looking girl with black hair and a buff looking blonde girl talking calmly. The only thing that was constant was that all of them were talking about possible teams.
Once everyone had reached the edge of a cliff overlooking a forest, Ozpin began explaining there initiation. They were to be launched into there and land in the forest where they would encounter numerous grimm who would not hesitate to kill them and whilst the staff would be monitoring they would not get involved and that their goal was to collect relics from a temple in the forest. He also explained that we would be forming teams now and these teams would remain the same for their entire time at beacon, however, the first person you made eye contact with would be your partner and would be on your team. Then the grey slabs they were told to stand on began to launch students into the air
Falling Harry used his fire powers to control his landing and headed in the direction of Annabeth who seemed to be straying furthest and using mini Festus to help Nico and Disco land near each other, sure enough Annabeth and Harry were now partners and Nico and Disco were partners. Using mini Festus Harry told Nico and Disco they would meet at the temple.
Annabeth and Harry strolled through the forest weapons drawn when 2 death stalkers emerged screeching, Harry immediately flew towards them whilst on fire and picked them up by the tail for Annabeth to slice their under belly with her knife, then a few minutes later came a king taijitu that was disposed of quickly, they also fought packs of beowolfs and ursa which were no match for this demigod duo, Annabeth could only imagine how easy Percy would have dealt with these monster he probably wouldn't need any help, gods she hadn't thought about Percy much since she had landed in remnant she had been to busy trying to survive and help Nico, Harry and Disco, she felt guilty what if Percy and the other had managed to survive, what if the gods had managed to get them all to Olympus, what if they won. It was all to much for Annabeth the thoughts came flooding in as if she had constructed a dam to keep them out and it had suddenly collapsed causing her to fall to her knees in shock just as an ursa was coming towards her, seeing this Harry shot a fireball and shouted
"ANNABETH WHAT ARE YOU DOING GET UP!" whilst still fighting hordes of grimm but he got no response "ANNABETH COME ON WEVE GOT TO KEEP GOING!" but again no response what was happening she was normally collected especially in a fight. Realising he had to get going or more grimm would appear he flung Annabeth over his shoulder and whilst struggling to hold her weight he sprinted forward he kept trying to wake Annabeth when suddenly she jolted and he dropped her.
"What was that for you imbecile!" Annabeth exclaimed indignantly
"You're the one who suddenly collapsed mid fight what was I supposed to do I didn't know if you would come around soon and I can't fend of monster for ever" Harry shouted back
"Oh I didn't realise, I'm sorry. It was just I started thinking about camp and Percy and I just couldn't take it" Annabeth said timidly
"It's fine let's just get going I'm sure that they're fine" Harry said dejectedly
Annabeth nodded and the duo set off once more. Finally they reached the temple with the relics, when Nico and Disco appeared
"Hey I see you two did fine" Disco said
"Yeah we had a couple of issues with grimm but we were fine" Harry said not wanting to tell them what happened to Annabeth
"Same here" Disco answered
"Sorry to interrupt but I think I've figured it out" Annabeth said proudly "so as we know the teams are comprised of 4 people but we were split into pairs, now you may think that they would form the teams based on how well the two pairs compliment each other, however if you look and the relics we were told to collect then you would notice that their chess pieces but not just that there is two of each piece for both colours. So I believe that because of the randomness the pairs were decided the teams will be based on what chess piece each pair takes, so I suggest we all take black king pieces that way we optimise our chance of being on the same team" Annabeth said
"Sure thing" Nico agreed "it makes sense to me"
Just as he said that, a pair emerged it was a blonde girl and a girl with long black hair, then a red haired girl rode in on an ursa who then collapsed dead followed by her partner a boy with shoulder length black hair, then a girl with black hair and red cloak fell from the sky before she was tackled mid air by the blonde boy who threw up on the airship, then the red head with partial armour emerged a death stalker on her tail and finally a white haired girl fell from the grasp of a nevermore, and was caught by vomit boy which didn't work as indented and he ended up landing with the girl on his back seeing the chaos the demigods sprung into action Harry and Disco grabbing their chosen relic and pocketing them.
Harry flew off covered in flames towards the nevermore and the other three went for the death stalker Disco began to play 'I burn' on his ukulele to confuse the creature allowing for Annabeth and Nico to slide under it and stab its weak spot, the huntsmen in training that were there stood in shock especially the girl in the red cloak who seemed about to step up.
From the others view Harry was a streak of fire flying around the nevermore shooting blasts of fire at it before it fell, the corpse falling to the ground and as it crashed down behind his friends creating a plume of dust, Harry landed triumphantly his flames dispersing around his feet as the regular mortals stared on in amazement they could tell that these four had been working together for a while the way they could put full faith in each other.
"That. Was. AMAZING!" the girl with the red cloak screeched excitedly "my names Ruby Rose, can I please have your autographs" she added as she turned into rose petals and shot towards the demigods
"Maybe next time" Harry said relishing the attention
"Ok but at least tell me your names" Ruby said ecstatic
"Sure I'm Harry, that girl is Annabeth" as he pointed to her she waved "the one with the black hair is Nico" he to waved upon being introduced "and finally the one with the ukulele is Disco" who also waved at his introduction
"Wow, so awesome. That's my sister Yang, that's her partner Blake and that's my partner Weiss" Ruby said as Yang picked her up and carried her off
After a few minutes of awkward silence Annabeth said "we should head to the cliff" the others all nodded and the group ran off to the cliff luckily it seemed that there were no grimm and they safely made it up the cliff.
The next day
"Russell Thrush, Cardin Winchester, Dove Brozewing, Sky Lark. The four of you retrieved the black bishop pieces form this day forth you will be known as team CRDL, led by Cardin Winchester." Ozpin said as he announced the teams "Jaune Arc, Lie Ren, Pyrrah Nikos, Nora Valkary the four of you retrieved white rook pieces form this day forward you shall work together as team JNPR led by Jaune Arc" as Ozpin announced this Jaune looked shocked he was team leader "Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Yang Xiao Long, Blake Belladonna the four of you retrieved white knight pieces form this day forward you shall work together as team RWBY led by Ruby Rose and finally Annabeth Chase, Nico di Angelo, Harry Fabbro, Disco Richardson you four retrieved black king pieces from this day forth you shall work together as team CNFR (conifer) led by Annabeth Chase" after he finished Ozpin informed them which dorm was theirs individually and they were sent there, they were also told all their luggage had been put in the room already.
Once the demigods got into the room they began to unpack although they didn't have much and once the room was set up Annabeth suggested they get some rest.
Harry couldn't get to sleep he just wasn't tired, so he decided to do some tinkering, nothing to loud just doing some rewiring of mini Festus to do things like increase the temperature of its flames, make the camera quality clearer, the GPS more accurate and a few other improvements. He continued to work until he feel asleep, he had reassembled mini Festus who was now wiring happily and it nuzzled up to the passed out head of Harry. That's when it happened the first dream he had since he got to remnant.
He was running from a mysterious figure his tool belt gone, he tried summoning fire but he couldn't he didn't have his hammer, he was defenceless and growing tried but he continued sprinting through the forest from the shadowy mass chasing him, then the scene shifted he was in a swamp like setting but the pools were jet black and everything had a purple tinge, then a pale, slender women appeared and began to use the black pools to create a beast that resembled a grimm he then noticed the other pools were also producing grimm, 'where is this place' he thought 'if this is where the grimm come from perhaps there is a way to destroy this place and by extension the grimm similar to what the giants planned to do to the Greek gods' then the scene shifted once more this time he was falling through a pitch black tunnel and once more he couldn't summon any fire then it shifted again he was now sinking he could see sunlight reflecting of the surface of the water but he couldn't swim up. Then he awoke with a start to Annabeth, Disco and Nico hovering above him concerned
"finally awake I see, come on we have a class at 9 and its 8:30" Annabeth said as Harry leapt out of bed and put on his uniform, tied his tool belt round his waist and the group walked out of the room, their weapons stored securely in their lockers they left for grimm studies class
the group arrived on time and just as their professor was a bout to start he was interrupted by teams RWBY and JNPR burst through the doors panting and once they sat down the professor began his mundane lecture. Ruby was messing about which seemed to anger Weiss from what Harry could see as professor Port ranted on about his triumphs over the creatures of grimm. After ten mind numbing minutes professor port started listing of the traits of a true huntsman or huntress winking at Yang as he said huntress, he then proposed a question
"So who among you believes you're the embodiment of these traits?" as he said an agitated Weiss raised her hand and so did the four demigods "well then get you weapons and return here to prove it"
Once they had returned professor port had five cages. He called Weiss up and slashed the lock off of one, freeing the boarbatusk inside Weiss slashed with her rapier doing nothing as the boarbatusk charged her she dodged, then tried again this time she somehow lodged he blade in the tusk of her opponent and was easily disarmed, the grimm charged and she rolled to retrieve her weapon "attack its belly there isn't armour there" Ruby shouted
"shut up" Weiss shouted back before conjuring a glyph in front of the charging grimm knocking it on to its back then summoning another glyph to jump off and attack the belly of the beast slaying the monster the professor congratulated her saying:
"We are in the prescience of a true huntress in training"
Harry scoffed "is that so sir, well the in training part is certainly precise she Cleary has a lot to work on. She can't take help from her leader; she wasted her energy with those glyphs when she could've easily let the grimm to run into the wall then simply stab its weak area and finally she cant use her own weapon, as any body who has a rapier should know it's a thrusting weapon designed for its wielder to stab opponents not slash at them" as he finished everyone looked at him shocked
"Well I'm leagues better than you scruffy you don't even have a proper weapon" Weiss retorted
"Is that so heiress, well professor if you would kindly open the next cage I'll, demonstrate to miss Schnee that I don't need a sword or a gun to defeat a clearly quite young boarbatusk" Harry said calmly and professor Port opened the cage.
The boarbatusk charged out and Harry stood his ground Weiss sniggered in the background the rest of the class looking on curiously then he caught the creature by the tusk fire rippling across his body as he flipped the creature onto its back and dealt a swift punch to its belly defeating it instantly as Weiss looked on in shock
"Well Weiss still think your better than I am if so we can settle this in combat class because at the moment it would seem your not as good as you thought" Harry said triumphantly walking back to his seat.
"Well then that was simply amazing, miss chase I believe it's your go next lets see if you can top that" Port said as he applauded Harry's performance.
Annabeth stepped up and as the boarbatusk charged she rolled aside at the last second causing it to crash into the wall as she dealt a swift stab to the upturned creatures unprotected area.
Then Nico stepped up the boarbatusk charged and he dodged and attacked its belly destroying his opponent.
Finally Disco approached and as the creature charged he strummed his ukulele and began playing 'living on a prayer' sending the grimm back as he amplified the sound and walked closer the creature now pinned to the wall he stopped playing and extended then axe blade in his instrument and brought it down on the unprotected area of the creature.
"that was simply amazing it would appear that the four of you truly have what it takes to be a huntsmen or huntress" Port said in amazement "your all dismissed" as he said this Weiss sprinted out in shame her team hot on her tail
"I think you went a bit far Harry" Annabeth muttered as they left
"Perhaps but she needed to be told" Harry responded and the others just shook their heads and sniggered.
