Chapter 49

Ari P.O.V

I was curled up in Vic's lap, chewing on my lower lip in my worry. He was making good on his promise of not letting me out of his sight, he hadn't even let me off his lap yet. I snuggled as close to him, and couldn't help but feel that something was going to happen.

I didn't have to wait long. I was still curled up on Vic's lap, when the pain hit. It felt like fire hot pokers were stabbing into my brain again and again. I cried out, and clung to Vic tightly, as I smelt that he was in pain as well. I tried to push the pain out of the way, by concentrating on Vic's scent, but it wasn't working, the assault just got stronger. I recognised that it was happening because of a telepath, but then, all of a sudden, it ended.

I sat there, trembling and gasping, as I clung to Victor. "Wh- what was that?" I stammered.

"I'm not sure. Hurt like a bitch mind."

"I know. Thank God it stopped."

Vic's arms tightened around me, and I heard him sniff me, checking for the scent of blood. I just held still for him, trying to let him know that I was fine, words wouldn't assure him.

It was then that I noticed that there were other cries of pain. My ears went back against my head as the sound reached me. "Vic… do you hear that?"

"Yeah. It's the frails. Every human in the building it sounds like. And the ones on the street. Whatever attacked us, must be attacking them now, instead."

"It was a Telepath." I said shakily. "For a moment, I felt them, at the back of my mind, I didn't get the time to find out who it was."

"They'd have to be strong then and… oh."

"What?" I asked.

"Have access to a machine like Cerebro. Stryker must have been after it when he went to the institute. He must have a telepath."

"Wait… the Professor! He and Scott never came back from visiting Magneto in prison, do you think that Stryker…?"

"It's possible, Kitten. If Stryker had a way of controlling him. I wouldn't put it past him, but Xavier wouldn't do this willingly."

The screaming was making me agitated. So I pulled myself out of Vic's arms and started pacing, like a caged animal, which in a sense, I was. I wanted to be outside, in the fresh air. I wanted to be in a place where I could move. My chest vibrated, and I realised that I was growling.

My growls only increased as I thought of my family. They could be hurting too. Victor let me pace, knowing that I needed to vent somehow. The screams soon stopped, and I heard the sirens begin. I felt my shoulders loosen, and I was able to sit down again.

"I hope everyone's alright." I said.

"Me too kitten." he said, wrapping an arm round me again. I could hear the undercurrent in his voice, which most probably wouldn't have picked up on.

"You're worried for him, aren't you?"

"Yes, I am. Even though we've fought, Jimmy's still my little brother. If anyone's going to hurt the runt, it'll be me."

I laughed lightly, trust Victor to say something like that. We sat in silence for a while again, until my mobile rang. I grabbed it, and hit answer. "Hello?" I asked, more than said.

"Ari!" Cari said on the other side, relieved.

"Cari, what happened, is everyone alright?"

"Everyone's fine, we're heading back to the school. How are you?"

"We're fine. What happened?"

"I'll explain when we get back. Should be there in about three hours."

"Alright Cari. I'll see you then."

"See you then Ari." She said. We both hung up, and I felt almost all the stress leave me.

"They're all fine, apparently. They'll be back in three hours."

"That's more than enough time then." Vic said, nuzzling my neck. I shivered, before he pulled me up and we went to his room.
