Chapter 54

Ari P.O.V

I dismounted my bike, glad I had had a spare set of leathers, seeing as my others had a gaping bullet hole in them.

I took my helmet off, and entered the school building. I changed out of my leathers, and went to find my friends. They were where they usually were; under the stairs. Cari and Mark were comparing notes for a chemistry test that they had later today.

"Hey guys." I said.

They all looked round. "Tiger!" They said happily, as they stood up and came over to give me a hug. We all sat down, me in the corner, and them in various other positions around me.

"Guys, I'm alright, I'm not going to break." I assured them.

"We just want to keep an eye on you. You really should have taken more time off." Cari said.

"I just wanted to take my mind off things, and we have R.E today, Philosophy and Ethics. Debate class is great for focusing on other things!" I said.

Turns out I was wrong. Philosophy went great, but Ethics… well, the topic was abortion. Luckily, Cari and Mark were with me, and managed to get me out of there without drawing to much attention from others. I sat out of the class for the rest of the lesson.

I was glad that I had a free after that lesson. I needed to get myself together. But first, I had something to do. I went up to the Ethics class, and knocked on the door.

"Come in." Mr. Harris said.

I opened the door, and walked in to see that the class was empty. "Um, sir, I was just coming in to apologize for earlier." I said.

"That's alright. But, what was wrong? Last year you could hold quite a debate on this issue."

I ran my hand through my hair. It just happened to be the hand with my engagement ring. "I'm… going through a tough time." I said.

"Is that an engagement ring?" He asked.

"I'm surprised you didn't notice it before sir. It's been there since Christmas." I said.

His eyes closed. "You were…?"

"Yeah. That's why I didn't come in to school the last few days."

"Abortion?"

"No, I didn't know, and I got careless. Miscarriage, so, is it ok if I get a heads up on lessons on this sort of topic sir? I really don't want a repeat of today. It won't take much for people to put two and two together."

"Of course. That's fine. I'll just pass on the sheets."

"Thanks sir. I'll just go get started on the essay for Mrs. Lewis." I said, before turning and leaving for the study room to do as much of that essay for Philosophy as possible.

Paddy was there. He also had a double free, so we spent the two hours catching up on what we'd missed when we were in America, and doing any assigned homework we'd been given today.

My final lesson for the day was after lunch. It was English. We were studying Metaphysical Poetry. I went through the lesson as normal, offering my own interpretations of the poem we were looking at. At the end of the lesson, Mrs. Heart held me back.

"Arianwen, I've just finished reading this." She held up the pile of papers that I had handed to her at the beginning of the school year. "This is a very good piece of work. You should consider trying to get this published. Mrs. Owens has also looked it through, and she says the exact same thing."

"You really think it's good enough?" I asked, smiling.

"Definitely. You should contact some publishers. I want to see that book on the shelves."

"I'll see what I can do." I said, placing the pile of paper that composed my book, into my bag. "See you next lesson."

"See you then." She said, smiling.

I left the room, and hurried down the stairs. I went to my locker, and grabbed my things. I changed in the girls toilets again, and then left the school to get to my bike.

I met Mark and Faith on the way out. They were walking home. Both of them gave me a hug, and told me to take care on the way home.

"I will guys." I assured them. With that, I slung my bag completely over my back, and got on my bike. I put my helmet on, and then drove off. The drive back home was good, it was calming.

When I got back to the house, I was smiling. I was still grieving, but I still had the good things in life. I had to look on the positive side of things. I parked in the drive way, and noticed the police car. My brow furrowed. I took off my helmet, and walked inside the house.

There were two police men there, along with Victor and Mam. "Alright, what's up?" I asked.

Victor walked over to me, and wrapped an arm round me. "She's escaped." he said, softly. I froze.
