Prologue Part 2

*Evans Residence, Midlands, Mid-1970*

A girl sat in front of a wooden desk, sun slowly setting as the light got dimmer through the window and she turned on a lamp and set it on the desk as she dipped her quill in ink and began scribbling on the parchment:

'Greetings Headmaster of Hogwarts,

My name is Petunia Evans, sister of Lily Evans. Earlier this week, a lady had appeared and claimed that Lily Evans was a witch. Since she is turning 11 soon, she is formally invited to Hogwarts: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I plead you to consider me as an addition to Hogwarts too. I promise to learn witchcraft as best as I can, so I beg you to allow me to join Lily at Hogwarts.

Regards,

Petunia Evans'

Getting up from her desk, she pulled out an empty envelope and thrust the letter in it before pushing it in the pocket of her nightgown. She wondered how to post it but discarded the thought as she heard footsteps approaching towards the room and a redhaired girl, peeked her head in, green eyes staring at her intensely as she asked, "Tuney, its time for dinner. You coming?"

Petunia nodded in reply and, turning the lamp off, followed her younger sister. The letter in her pocket felt heavy for some reason or maybe it was her nervousness that she felt.

The next day came by in a blink of an eye and Petunia stood in front of the post box, holding the letter tightly. Lily had rushed inside the shopping complex, leaving her behind which made Petunia glad. This was a secret that Lily should never find out about.

With that thought, she slipped the envelope inside the post box and hurried inside before Lily got suspicious.

*Evans Residence, Midlands, Late 1970*

Lily crept up to her sister's bedroom, looking around carefully. Fortunately, Petunia had gone to a muggle school and so Lily found herself at home by herself while her parents were busy with work. Just a few more months and Lily would be at the school of witchcraft, Hogwarts as the professor who had come to inform her had called it.

Knock. Knock.

The redheaded girl looked at the window of Petunia's window and saw the familiar black-haired boy staring through, his locks of hair falling down to his and covering them slightly to hide the sullen dark circles.

The boy waited patiently as Lily quickly reached the window and unlatched it before flinging it open, "Severus."

"Lily," Snape greeted as he hopped in and dusted his robes before crinkling his nose is slight disgust, "is this your sister's room?"

"It is."

"I can see why she always smells then."

"Severus," Lily's response held a warning tone within it that did not go unnoticed by Severus as he bit his lip and did not continue about Petunia. Lily, meanwhile, had begun to rummage through Petunia's desk.

"What are you looking for?" Snape asked as he stood closer to her, staring greedily at her freckled face and green eyes.

Lily shrugged, "Anything that can explain why my sister is being so distant from me."

"Maybe a letter from Hogwarts?"

The girl's eyes shot up towards him who held an envelope that read: 'Petunia Evans, Evans Residence'. Why would Petunia receive a letter from Hogwarts? She extended her hand forward and the boy sheepishly gave her the envelope, barely feeling the heat from her hand and a tinge of red slowly appeared on his cheeks, however, Lily was too engrossed in the letter to notice.

'Dear Petunia Evans,

I am happy that you reached out to me regarding Lily Evans' acceptance into Hogwarts and how easily you got accustomed to her nature. However, it is with the greatest displeasure that I must inform you that we are unable to accept you into Hogwarts since you do not possess the magic needed to become a witch. You are a very sweet and familial person, and I must apologize from the bottom of my heart that our world cannot educate such a lady as yourself. It is our loss, and you should find yourself in a great school in your world that will make you successful in your future.

Regards,

Albus Dumbledore'

Her eyes widened as she continued to read till the end before she dropped the letter to the floor. Snape looked at her concerned and took a step forward, "Lily, everything okay?"

"Petunia sent the Headmaster of Hogwarts a letter requesting to be allowed to get enrolled with me, but she got rejected since she isn't a witch."

Snape smiled widely since he already knew it as he lightly placed his hand on her shoulder and said, "She cannot enter our world if she doesn't have magic. She is a muggle and will always be just that."

Lily nodded. It was too much to comprehend since she couldn't believe that Petunia, the person who hated magic as a whole, would try to enter a school that taught magic. Was she jealous? However, judging from the dried tears from the parchment, Lily figured that Petunia was avoiding her because of that and so, decided that she could not tell Petunia that her secret was out.

"You cannot tell her that we know Severus, okay?"

Snape gritted his teeth at the request but with a small glance at Lily, nodded and sighed, "Fine."

"You have to promise me Severus."

"Fine, I promise," he spoke quietly, bringing a wide smile on her face. He put the envelope back to where he found it and, following Lily, exited out of the house.

*Platform 9 ¾, London, 1st September 1971*

"...I'm sorry, Tuney, I'm sorry! Listen-" Lily begged as she held her sister's hands forcefully, "Maybe once I'm there- no, listen, Tuney! Maybe once I'm there, I'll be able to go to Professor Dumbledore and persuade him to change his mind!"

The two girls stood to the side, far from earshot of Severus and her parents, but close enough to be in their view. Petunia struggled against Lily's grasp, but the latter held firmly.

"I- don't- want- to- go!" said Petunia, and she dragged her hand back out of her sister's grasp, "You think I want to go to some stupid castle and learn to be a-a-"

Her eyes narrowed over the people walking past, holding cages that had snakes hissing at others, owls hooting loudly and even cats mewing from within as their paws tried to scratch through the metal bars. Students, she assumed, wore dark robes similar to the one Lily had bought a few days ago and were entering the scarlet steam engine 'Hogwarts Express' and either looking around with surprise or greeting others after having been apart for ages.

"- you think I want to be a- a freak?" she finished as she snapped her head back and closed her eyes, refusing to look any further. She was unaware of Lily's pleading eyes getting coated with tears and she succeeded in tugging her hand away from her little sister.

"I'm not a freak. That's a horrible thing to say."

"That's where you're going," said Petunia with relish. "A special school for freaks. You and that Snape boy...weirdos, that's what you two are. It's good you're being separated from normal people. It's for our safety."

Lily glanced at her parents as they stood at one spot, looking around the platform with an air of wholehearted enjoyment, drinking in the scene. Then she looked back at her sister, and her voice was low and fierce.

"You didn't think it was such a freak's school when you wrote to the headmaster and begged him to take you."

Petunia turned towards her in shock, her cheeks turning red slightly.

"Beg? I didn't beg!"

"I saw his reply. It was very kind."

"You shouldn't have read-" whispered Petunia, "that was my private- how could you-?"

Lily sneaked a glance at Snape who was looking in their direction as he stood next to an older lady who resembled him quite a lot. Petunia followed her gaze and gasped, "That boy found it! You and that boy have been sneaking in my room!"

"No- not sneaking- " Lily tried to defend, "Severus saw the envelope, and he couldn't believe a Muggle could have contacted Hogwarts, that's all! He says there must be wizards working undercover in the postal service who take care of-"

"Apparently wizards poke their noses in everywhere!" Petunia interjected as she glared at Lily and Severus, her skin turning pale as if she had seen a ghost, "Freak!"

Following that, she scurried to her parents, leaving behind a tearing Lily who could only watch the back of her older sister. The events that followed seemed to go by in a blur till she found herself sitting in a compartment, looking out of the window.

Four boys sat in the same compartment, two of them being extremely noisy while the other two seemed to add a few words or else just stay quiet. The door slid open, making her turn her hair and she saw Snape standing there, searching for her. He finally noticed her and walked in and sat opposite to her, even after Lily had turned back to looking out of the window.

"I don't want to talk to you," she said in a taut voice. Her tone, while furious, held sadness within it and the tear stains were enough to give Severus the clue that she had been crying.

"Why not?"

"Tuney h-hates me. Because we saw that letter from Dumbledore."

"So what?"

Lily finally turned towards him, her withering glare dug right into him and he backed away in his seat slowly. She hissed out, "So she's my sister!"

"She's only a-" Snape paused as he thought his words over but luckily, Lily didn't seem to hear as she wiped her eyes from any remaining tears, "But we are going! This is it! We're off to Hogwarts!"

She smiled slightly at his enthusiasm while he continued, "You'd better be in Slytherin."

"Slytherin?"

For the first time since Lily had entered the compartment, there was silence as all the four boys excluding Severus turned to look at the pair. The boy who had spoken stared at her with intense gaze, his hazel eyes glazing over her before they turned towards Severus.

"Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" James asked the boy lounging on the seats opposite him, his black locks of hair hanging loosely like Snape's but they seemed more… feral. His eyes held a dark look at the mention of Slytherin.

He responded, "My whole family have been in Slytherin."

"Blimey," said James, jumping slightly, "and I thought you seemed all right!"

Sirius grinned, "Maybe I'll break the tradition. Where are you heading, if you've got the choice?"

In response, James stood up, making a motion of lifting a sword as he stated, "'Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart!' Like my dad."

Severus scoffed at his words, drawing everyone's attention and Lily was slightly surprised at Snape trying to stand up to others. She did not understand Gryffindor's and Slytherin's hate for each other but she knew that it could easily result in bloodshed.

"Got a problem with that?" James threatened.

"No," said Snape, though his slight sneer said otherwise, "If you'd rather be brawny than brainy-"

"Where're you hoping to go, seeing as you're neither?" interjected Sirius.

James hollered loudly along followed by Sirius and another sheepish boy in the compartment while the fourth boy merely sighed and shook his head. Lily stood up immediately, staring at the group with utter dislike.

"Come on, Severus, let's find another compartment."

James and Sirius continued laughing as they mocked her voice and wordings to Snape. Lily opened the door with anger and walked out while Snape tried to but James tripped him, making him stumble before regaining his balance.

"See ya, Snivellus!" Sirius called after him as he slammed the compartment door.

Lily continued walking forwards, not sparing a look back till she noticed a compartment with a girl and two boys and entered, "Sorry but the compartment I was in was full of rude boys."

"That's alright," the girl smiled at Lily and looked at Snape who seemed to be interested in the boys.

Snape nodded at them in greeting, "Mulciber, Avery."

"You know them?" Lily asked Snape who nodded in response before walking towards them and sitting with them, but his gaze lingered on Lily.

The girl scooted closer to Lily and mumbled, "My name is Mary McDonald, nice to meet you."

"I am Lily Evans, nice to meet you too."

A/N: Prologue Part 2 is complete finally. This marks the end of prologue and I will be focusing on their sorting ceremony next chapter followed with Year 1 basically.
