PART 7: Morning After the Ordeal
Bonnie awoke once again feeling like her head was full of the feathers from her pillow. As she sat up and stretched, she wondered how long she had been asleep this time around. Marceline woke up soon after, yawning and cricking her neck as she sat up.
"Good morning," Bonnie told Marceline before kissing her on the cheek. "I'll go downstairs and start breakfast."
Marceline merely nodded. Bonnie could tell the vampire wasn't fully awake yet. The candy princess got out of bed, slipped on her purple dressing gown, and headed for the bedroom's exit. On her way down the ladder though, she could smell the pleasing aroma of fresh coffee. Bonnie arrived downstairs and found Simon in the kitchen wearing a chef's hat.
"Ah! Good morning, Princess Bubblegum," Simon greeted. "I hope my being here didn't startle you. I let myself in with the spare key Marcy gave me."
"It's fine," Bonnie told him, though she was a little bit disconcerted to see Simon in the kitchen. It was the type of creepy thing he'd do when he was the Ice King. A question suddenly dawned on her. "How long have I been asleep?"
"You and Marceline have been asleep for about two days," Simon answered as he took off his hat. "It's why I let myself in. Anyway, I just made a big breakfast for you two in case you woke up today."
"Thanks. Right now though, what I want most is a cup of coffee."
Simon poured Bonnie a cup of coffee and handed it to her through the window of the kitchen. She took it and headed out the side door of the house. Bonnie stood there, gazing out towards the mouth of the cave as she took her first sip of coffee. She noticed Finn's beat-up R.V. right at the cave's mouth. Apparently Simon wasn't the only one who decided to remain close by out of concern.
Marceline floated out of the house wearing an open yellow bathrobe over her normal sleep ware. The vampire queen was now fully awake and sucking the color red from a piece of toast with jam on it. Marceline floated up next to Bonnie and handed her the toast once she finished draining the jam's color. Bonnie took the toast without even looking and bit into it. They nearly aways shared breakfast in this manner.
As Marceline placed her hand on Bonnie's shoulder, she noticed the R.V. at the mouth of the cave. At this point Finn, Bronwyn and Huntress Wizard emerged from the R.V. and began to head for the house. Huntress Wizard was carrying a wicker basket containing something wrapped in a brown cloth.
"Hey guys," Finn greeted with a wave as he and the others stepped onto the porch. "Glad to see you're finally up. Guess all the crazy stuff with Candice and Techno Joe really wore you both out, huh?"
"Well, I always get pretty exhausted whenever my dad gets involved," Marceline remarked.
Bronwyn nodded. "I sorta get where you're coming from. Of course your dad's a demon, mine's just a super straitlaced realtor. Probably not nearly as bad."
"I dunno. One time your dad bought the deed to the old tree house where Jake and I lived and rented it out as an apartment building," Finn recalled. "Jake and I had to sleep on a ladder."
"Marcy, didn't you used to own the deed to Finn and Jake's old place?" Bonnie recalled.
"Yeah, and I sold it to Bronwyn's dad for a guitar," Marceline revealed. "Sorry Finn."
"It's cool," Finn responded. "Anyway, I hope you guys are feeling well."
Huntress Wizard stepped forward. "I'm pretty impressed by your ability to sleep for such long periods of time. Could you perhaps tell me your secret? I'm trying to learn how to hibernate for the winter."
Bonnie thought for a moment. "I guess our secret is emotional stress and extreme sleep deprivation."
"Hmm…I think I'll find another way. Anyway, I brought you both a gift basket. It's another bear liver, two deer hearts and a goat's brain."
"Oh. You…really shouldn't have," Bonnie responded with an insincere smile as she took the basket. "Thanks."
"So P.B., are you really doing okay?" Finn asked.
Bonnie looked up towards the ceiling of the cave. "I think so. I find I need to reflect a bit on how I've run my kingdom though. Particularly on how I've treated my subjects. Some of the things Candice said about me weren't totally wrong. Anyway, how's the kingdom doing since I've been out?"
"It's coming along. Lolly's been supervising most of the repairs."
Bonnie nodded. "Guess I should head over there and see how things are coming along."
"Want me to come with?" Marceline asked.
"Sure. I could really use you with me right now."
"Well, we're gonna head off," Finn told the couple. "I've been asked to take care of a giant sloth that's been harassing the Hotdog Kingdom. See ya."
Finn and his entourage then headed for the R.V. Bonnie and Marceline watched as the trio left.
"Guess we should probably clean up a bit before we head to your kingdom," Marceline remarked. "You want the shower first?"
Bonnie smirked. "Funny. You're the one who said we didn't need to take turns."
Marceline blushed and grinned. "You little minx."
The two of them laughed and headed back into the house. Bonnie was no longer sure if she was fit to be ruler of the Candy Kingdom, but she was happy to have Marceline at her side as her queen.
THE END
Afterward: We have now come to the end of this tale, which sort of ended up being more of a oneshot split into multiple parts. I'll admit this story was probably not my best work. In fact the lack of response this thing has gotten has made me wonder if perhaps I should just stick to writing anime/manga fanfics. Then again, I have also been working on the rough draft for something of a sequel to this story, though I don't know if I'll actually publish it.
Anyway, I'll admit the plot of this story probably wasn't much, but I have enjoyed working with a lot of these characters. So for that reason along I may publish another Adventure Time fanfic one of these days.
Please review and let me know what you think.
