Stanley and I walked hand in hand back through the corridors and up the flying staircases to eventually reach the common room door. I used the golden knocker to get the riddle from the eagle that guarded the door.

"This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down."

Stanley and I looked at each other, deep in concentration and thought. This thing all things devours.. what devours things over time? ..Time? Time!

"Time!" I exclaimed, and the door swung open before us, giving us entry. Stanley looked at me and smiled.

"You're pretty good at these riddles, huh?" He said, smiling. "I'd better brush up on my skills if I ever want to beat you!"

I shrugged and followed him in, being greeted by Tiffany, Jake and the murmurs and voices of our fellow First Years. Our hands broke away from each other, embarrassed, and before anyone could see them and question us.

"Where have you been?" Tiffany smirked, eyeing the two of us. "Have you been snogging?" She gave me a wink.

"Ew! N-no!" I said, embarrassed and taken aback by Tiffany's remark. "Of course not!"

Stanley looked embarrassed and was slightly blushing. "N-no.. we were just talking.."

Tiffany smiled at us and gave me a nudge. "Alright, I believe you. But I'm watching you both!" She giggled, and took my hand to lead me upstairs to unpack.

I turned around to see Stanley and Jake standing there, bewildered. "I'll see you guys tomorrow!" I managed to say, before I was yanked up the stairs.

She shut the door behind us, checked that no-one was around, and turned to me. "So, what's really going on?" She smirked.

I was bewildered. "N-nothing! Why are you so persistent in asking?"

She crossed her arms over her chest and gave me a quizzical and questioning look. I looked at her, shrugging and waving my arms about exasperatedly. "What? There's nothing going on! I swear! We're just friends!" Tiffany very slowly nodded her head, not believing me. "Tiffany, nothing's going on! You know I'd tell you if there was!"

Tiffany finally gave up trying to get something out of me and we started to unpack our things into the wardrobes and drawers. I put my little notebook in my bed-side table, and put my clothes into my large mahogany closet.

Night soon came, and we were ordered to go to bed. I lied in my bed, looking at the ceiling. Was there something going on? Between me and Stanley? I don't know, we're just friends. But we were holding hands.. and we hugged.. did I feel some sort of connection? Perhaps Tiffany was right.. maybe there is something between us.

I drifted to sleep, my mind happy and confused.

"Wake up, girls! Time to get ready and go down for breakfast!" Shouted William, interrupting me from my delightful slumber. I rubbed my eyes and groaned in protest. I wanted to stay in bed and sleep more, but Tiffany whacked me on the head, resulting in me falling out of my bed in suprise.

"Oi!" I shouted, rubbing my head. "You'll pay for that! Just you wait!"

Tiffany just laughed and started to get dressed. "We'll see about that! Come on! Hurry up! I'm starving!"

My stomach started to grumble, and I realised how hungry I was also. I slipped on my robes, and followed Tiffany down to the Great Hall, amongst other students. We found our table, and saw Jake and Stanley waving to us from the far end, beckoning for us to come over. We ran over to them and sat opposite them, our mouths watering at all the delicious food laid out before us.

"I hope we get to eat like this every day." I said, grabbing everything I could see and depositing it onto my plate.

"So, what are we doing today? Lessons don't start for us until tomorrow." Tiffany said, shoving a spoon of cereal into her mouth.

Jake swallowed before speaking. "Shall we go and explore the castle?"

"NO!" All three of us shouted in unison, making him jump.

"Okay, okay, I was just joking.." He said, embarrassed.

"I reckon we should go and sign up for Quidditch." Stanley said, biting into a croissant. "Hopefully it won't lead to nearly getting us killed this time." He nudged Jake playfully.

I nodded. "Sounds like a good idea. Tiff, are you in?"

"Na, it's okay. Quidditch isn't really my thing. I might go and see if there's anything going in the herbology room or something, see if I can get a head start before you guys. But you guys have fun – I hope you get in!" Tiffany smiled, finishing her cereal. "See you guys!"

We waved to her as she walked off. We finished off our delicious breakfast and headed down to the Quidditch grounds to find Madam Hooch.
