A Phantom's Love and Courage

Chapter 12: Fate's Complex Design: Heroes Finally Meet

Mamoru, who was currently away on a field trip with his college classmates, was lost in his thoughts.

He and his classmates were currently visiting some of Japan's historical temples, but his mind was currently on a certain bubbly blonde girl who he is away from at the moment.

"I hope that Usako and the others are okay..."He thought as he kept walking with his group.

As soon as they arrived back at the Inn that they were staying at, the tall college boy suddenly heard a news report on a nearby television.

"The ghost boy Danny Phantom has been spotted once more in the Juuban district..."A reporter said on the television.

The words "ghost" and "Juuban" caught his attention.

"Excuse me...what are they talking about?..."Mamoru asked the Innkeeper, who had been watching the news report.

"Oh, they say that some teenage ghost boy from America has arrived to Juuban and people have been spotting him. Personally, I think it's some publicity stunt for a new movie or something..."The Innkeeper, an old man in his sixties, said in a dismissive way.

"A teenage ghost boy from America?..."Mamoru asked, concerned with this news.

However, the news soon showed another report...one that caught Mamoru's attention more than the last one.

"And it seems that the mysterious teenage ghost has gotten involved with the Sailor Guardians just recently with their newest monster attack. Is he an ally or an enemy? More news on this later tonight at 10..."The reporter said.

"The sailor guardians? Ghost boy? What in the world?..."Mamoru said as he saw footage of the fight with the jack-in-the-box monster.

Panic filling him, Mamoru picks up his phone and started dialing a number that he knows by heart.

"Come on! Pick up, pick up, pick up!..." He said under his breath.

There was no answer, filling him with dread.

"Too many rings. What's happening, Usako?..."He said, getting worried since he couldn't reach her phone.

"Mamoru, our ping-pong game needs one more player. Come on, I'm not waiting any longer..."One of his classmates, the one whom he is sharing the same room with, said impatiently.

However, Mamoru was still worried over Usagi as he still got no response. He sensed something ominous in the air.

"I really hope that the reason she can't answer is because she forgot to charge her phone again...and not because she's in danger...or that is has anything to do with that ghost from America..."He said under his breath, trying hard not to panic.

Putting his phone away, he put on a stoic expression to avoid looking like he was going to panic. He eyed the blurry photo of Danny Phantom on the TV screen, and frowned.

"Looks like Tuxedo Mask might need to make a late night visit back home to Juuban..."He thought, frowning.

Meanwhile

Danny and the Sailor Guardians were now on the rooftop. As they landed there, Sailor Moon noticed her cell phone was turned off.

"Aw, my battery is dead..."Sailor Moon mumbled while Luna made a face at her.

"I told you to remember to charge it last night, but as always, you were too busy reading your manga to listen..."Luna said as Sailor Moon pouted.

"You could have done it for me. Now, what if Mamo tries to call me right now!..."She whined.

Before Luna could say anything else, Danny soon began to speak up. Luna and Artemis both hid behind a nearby chimney to stay out of his sight, still not sure about him yet. Chibi-Usa did the same thing, as they listened in on the conversation.

"So...we're alone? Where do we start after introductions?..."Danny asked.

As he stood before them, the Guardians all gathered around and each had varying expressions on their faces as they practically circled the now surrounded ghost boy.

"So... we have questions..." Mars started, arms crossed.

Her blonde colleague then piped up, an excited smile on her face as she spoke to the ghost boy.

"Like... Do you have a girlfriend? Are you free tonight? Do you like blondes?..." Venus asked, getting in the flustered phantom's presence.

Danny stepped back a little, not used to getting this much attention from a pretty girl, especially when that girl is a superhero as well...especially one in a mini skirt.

"Part of me is really fighting the urge to enjoy her being this close..." He thought sheepishly, trying his best not to smile like a dork.

Suddenly, Sailor Moon of all people pulled Venus by the ear, away from Danny.

"This is not the time to go boy crazy!..." She said as Venus made her discomfort clear from her yelps.

"How scary is it when Usagi knows better about time and place?..." Mars thought, as she stared at the ironic scene before her.

Venus pouted.

"Meanie. I was just asking a couple harmless questions..."Venus muttered, rubbing her ear in irritation.

Danny blinked at that, since this certainly wasn't what he expected from his first official meeting with the Sailor Guardians. A part of him did find it rather amusing.

"Well, that is certainly one way to break the ice. I almost wish I could show everyone this..."He thought before speaking up.

"Up...well, it's kind of a long story..."Danny began.

"We've got time. So, go on ahead..."Moon said.

"I'll take notes. After all, I'm rather curious as to why a superhero from America made his way here to Japan of all places..."Mercury said, holding her handheld computer ready.

Danny blinked.

"Okay, well...well...have any of you have ever heard of Clockwork?..."The ghost boy asked.

"Clockwork? Never heard of him..."Moon said, while one of her friends sighed.

"Clockwork means a mechanism with a spring and gear wheels, which is usually used to drive clocks, toys or other devices..."Mercury explained in her brainy sort of way.

"Yeah, but in this case...Clockwork is an actual being and in this case, he's the ghost master of time..."Danny said, confusing the smart heroine.

"Ghost master of time?..."They all asked, confused by his choice of words.

"Yeah...uh...guys who see all of time's branching paths or whatever..."Danny said, trying to explain as best as he can.

"He and some lady with green hair...they both told me that something in the near future needed all of us to work together to defend against some world endangering threat. I needed to find you five girls and ask for all of your help to fight back this threat..."He added, finding this to be as hard to believe as the Sailor Guardians.

He then began to explain all he could about this new danger, as he was instructed to.

5 minutes later

"And that's all that they told me..."Danny said.

He already explained everything that he knew about the new danger, and why they had to deal with them as soon as possible.

"For real?..."Jupiter asked, and the ghost boy nodded.

"Yeah...So, long story short...he asked me to come and help you girls because there's some dangerous enemy or whatever coming. I don't think that clown guy was it though..."Danny said.

With that, Venus pulled herself free of Sailor Moon's pinch to take Danny's hands.

"And you came all this way to save us? So cool..."Venus said, looking starstruck.

"Uh..."Danny let out, his face turning to a light shade of red, while Mars yanked her away from the ghost boy.

"So not the time!..."Mars nagged, while Venus huffed and pouted.

"So..."Jupiter began.

"So?..." Danny asked.

"Basically, you were sent to aid us against this new danger that will threaten all of Japan and possibly the whole world too?..."Jupiter asked.

"Pretty much..."Danny said.

The Sailor Guardians were worried now and thought carefully about what to ask the ghost boy next.

"This attack? When did you say that it will be?..."Mercury asked in an urgent tone, looking serious.

"Clockwork says that it will be exactly 3 days from now..."Danny said. "Which is also the last day of my vacation too..."The ghost boy mentally added.

"That doesn't give us a lot of time..."Moon said, now feeling the gravity of the situation they were in.

"Meaning that we'll all have to prepare fast..."Danny said, matching the tone of the tension of this conversation.

"I get you girls just met me, but I'm not your enemy. I really just came here to help..."He said, hoping that they would believe him.

The Sailor Guardians were silent for a moment. However, Jupiter spoke up next.

"Girls, huddle!..."She said, and Moon blinked, before nodding.

The girls soon gathered several feet away and Danny was a little taken aback by this response.

"We'll talk with you in a moment, but give us some time...uh...girl talk..."Moon said, before she and her team went for their private "meeting".

Danny just stood there, keeping his distance.

"I really hope that they believe me and don't believe any of those stupid rumors about me being a menace. Especially Venus and Jupiter..."He thought, waiting as the female superheroes gathered together to consider what they have just learned.

If this all goes south, Danny can at least be happy that he gets to see Japan with his own eyes.

And two very pretty faces.

With the girls

The girls gathered to the edge of the rooftop, where Chibi-Usa and the cats were gathered, hiding behind the roof entrance. The three still tried to stay out of Danny's sight, while the group of female superheroes tried to figure out what their next move would be.

"So, what do you think?..." Mercury asked, still unsure what to do.

Mars, who is still wary of the ghost boy, was about to speak up, but Venus beat her to it.

"I say that we trust him..." Venus said.

All but one shared unsure looks. Before Mars could protest, the tallest member of their group spoke up.

"I agree..." Jupiter said.

Those save for Venus were surprised to hear that.

"You're not gaga for him too, are you?..." Mercury asked, sighing.

"No... I mean... he's kinda cute...even if he is a little on the short side...but that's not what matters. He did help us with that villain..." Jupiter said.

"And he did save me..."Venus reminded, smiling as she looked at the ghost boy's direction.

"True..."Mars said, not able to deny them.

"Then that settles it..." Venus said, looking eager.

"But...still...there's something about the energy that he unwittingly gives off that I just don't trust. I don't think this is a good idea..."Mars said, still wary of anything to do with ghosts.

"What do you two think?..." Moon whispers to Luna and Artemis, both still hiding.

"Clockwork... I know that I've heard that name before. I had heard stories of an entity who controlled the flow of time... but I thought it was just that, a story..." Luna said.

"And honestly, I'm surprised he even knew about him since few beings even know that he even exists...but if what he's saying is true and he was sent by him...then it's serious..."Artemis said, not mincing any words.

"And even Pluto-san asked this Clockwork for him to come find the girls too. That just makes this doubly serious..."Chibi-Usa thought.

She took a look at Danny as he wasn't looking.

"I didn't hear anything about him...what is going on here?!..."She thought, looking worried due to not remembering Danny Phantom being even remotely mentioned by anyone from her time in the future.

He was a foreign presence, which made her wary about trusting him.

"Still...that energy from him...seemed familiar for some reason..."Luna said.

"Familiar?..."Jupiter asked, surprised.

"It's hard to say...I mean...it feels like I sensed it before...though it's much stronger now...It's hard to explain..."Luna said, looking just as confused as the others right now.

"I sensed a strange energy from him too..."Artemis said.

"I guess since he is a ghost, our paths must have crossed at some point in our lives before...whether we knew it or not...though it is kinda familiar, though it does feel stronger...all I can be sure is that it's not evil..."The white cat said.

"Are you sure that it's not evil?..."Mars asked, still nervous.

Artemis and Luna both nodded.

"Yeah, I admit that I sometimes can sense something strangely unnatural from this Danny Phantom's aura, but if both me and Luna can sense no ill will from him, then it's gotta mean something..."Artemis said as Luna nodded.

Most of the Sailor Guardians and Chibi-Usa still seemed unsure. However, the pig-tailed blonde leader of the super heroine group decided to listen to her gut.

With a glance at their first, she smiled.

"I think that he's telling the truth..." Moon said, getting their attention.

"Really?..." Mars questioned.

"Yeah... he doesn't seem like a bad person and he did help us. He also seemed sincere when he said that he came to help us however he can..."The blonde heroine said before turning to her first friend of the group.

"What about you, Mercury?..." Moon asked.

The bluenette pondered about it some more.

"All the data so far paints a 64% chance of him telling the truth, given some of the previous polls about this Phantom reputation back in his hometown and country. That's not an equation that leads to trustworthiness. 64% isn't a number I trust... I prefer numbers in at least the 90's... but he did save us and at least three of us are siding with him. So... I say we give him a chance..." Mercury said.

"Well... I'm still not so sure about him..." Mars said before groaning.

"Well, I still think he's being sincere..."Jupiter said.

Venus nodded with a smile.

"Why? I know that Venus seems to be a fan-girl of his, but why do you seem so sure that you can trust him?..."Mars asked, not getting it.

Jupiter thought about it and looked at the ghost boy in question, and felt at ease when she stared at his direction, making her smile... Yet couldn't explain why that is.

"If he was really evil, he would have tried something as soon as he met us, just like every other villain we've met before...and he did save Venus. Besides, there is something about him...I can't explain it, but he did seem to be sincere to me..."Jupiter said.

"And familiar...especially his eyes. It's strange but it;s like I had seen them before. Yet, the eyes seem like the wrong color...I don't know why I feel like that, though..."She thought, before continuing.

"I do think that he means no harm, and if he's willing to risk his afterlife alongside us against this new threat, then I say that we see for ourselves what he's really made of..."Jupiter said, while a still enamored Venus nodded.

"I agree..."She said, though she didn't hide her real reasons for agreeing with her.

Mars realized that everyone wanted to give the ghost boy a chance and she sighed.

"Like I said...I'm still not so sure about him...but... majority rule, I suppose... I'll go along with whatever you all think...for now..."She said, still being stubborn.

"Great, the majority rules!..."Moon said, smiling.

The group of female super heroines went back to the ghostly superhero, while the cats and child remained in their hiding places.

"So?..."Danny asked, waiting for their reply.

"We trust you..." Moon said with an encouraging smile.

"For now..." Mars said in a low growl.

Before Danny could comment on Mar's attitude, he felt a pair of arms.

"So... while you're here... maybe we can swap stories?..." Venus asked, fluttering her eyes at him.

Danny's face turned red.

"Uh... thanks but... I gotta go... for now..."Danny said, gently removing himself from her grip.

Venus pouted as the other girls tilted their heads in slight confusion. If he was their ally, it would make more sense if they got in touch with him.

"So...you said that you wanted to aid us against this upcoming threat. How exactly can we contact you?..."Mercury asked.

"I do have a cellphone on me right now, but I also need to get it charged too. I have another idea. We can meet tomorrow and give you all my contact info then. Promise..."Danny offered.

The girls thought about it and nodded.

"Okay, tomorrow at 10:00 am at Juuban park, we'll meet there and discuss more about what we're all goes to do together afterwards. We will appear as we do now..."Mercury said.

"Awesome. I'll see you all then. Hopefully, we can trade info..."Danny said, happy that things seem to finally be looking up.

"And maybe after that, we can get some lunch together?..."Venus said with a wink to the ghost boy.

Danny blushed and sweated again, while the rest of the female superheroes rolled their eyes.

"She really such a fan-girl. She is trying too hard..."They all thought.

"She's cute, but she's laying it on a little thick...and I am both excited and a little overwhelmed by her forwardness. That said, maybe we can trade numbers when this is done..."He thought but shook his head and focused on his current priorities.

Such as the fact he will be unable to communicate with them soon.

"Anyway. I gotta go. See you guys tomorrow..."Danny said, as he flew away.

"Bye-bye Phantom-san! I'm looking forward to tomorrow..."Venus waved enthusiastically, while her friends sighed at her eagerness.

The female heroes watched the flustered ghost boy leave, while two of them couldn't help, but stare at him a bit longingly.

"Hmm... there was something oddly familiar about him...it's strange but kinda nice..." Jupiter and Venus thought in unison.

"Well, today has definitely been a long one. I say we all go home and rest up..."Moon said.

"Agreed. I have so much to ask him later..."Mercury said.

All of the other girls nodded.

The female heroes and their allies soon left the rooftop as each of them were about to head back to their respective homes.

Meanwhile

In Amity Park

Sam and Tucker were currently at the mall, trying to enjoy their long weekend and covering for their best friend when needed.

However, the goth girl's mind was still on Danny who is still on the other side of the planet...with a group of female superheroes in really short skirts.

The goth girl sighed out loud, which the techno geek noticed her grumpiness.

"You okay, Sam?..."Tucker asked after taking a bite of his fries.

"I just felt... something off..." Sam said as she poke at her salad.

"Ah, come on, Sam. Danny's doing alright. He's with a bunch of SUPER hot Japanese girls..." Tucker said reassuringly.

He didn't see the dirty look on Sam's face.

"That's what worries me the most!..." She thought as she stabbed her salad in an envious tantrum.

Needless to say, Sam was not happy with this current arrangement.

She sucked in air through her nose as she ate her salad in a frustrated manner.

Back in Japan

With Danny

The ghost boy soon returned to the motel where he had been staying.

He changed forms and soon walked out of it, feeling relieved that the first part of his mission was complete.

"I'm glad that I got them to listen to me. Now, all that's left is to kick the butt of whoever is behind all this and then I can go home..."He thought, wondering how he and his new magical teammates would accomplish the second part.

The ghost boy decided that they'll figure that part out once they cross that bridge.

He would have just taken a nap, but he soon felt hungry and decided to step out to grab a bite to eat. Danny walked around Juuban, and stopped by a nearby convenience store.

Danny looked around and raised a brow at the names of the food on display. While the necklace helped him understand the Kanji's and the Japanese vocabulary, he still can only use it for a few hours at best and had to be smart on how and when to use it.

Once it was done, he'd have to make it back to the room he was staying in and wait. In the mean time, he spotted something being sold.

"Pork buns?..."He read out loud while the store clerk, a middle aged woman, heard him and smiled.

"Would you care for one? They are freshly made and on sale today. Only 150 yen each..."The woman said with a kind smile.

Recalling that is little over a dollar in United States currency, Danny handed her the money and soon left the store with the bun.

He took a bite and hummed.

"Not bad...you can really taste the pork in this bun. Lucky me that it's so cheap..."He thought as he ate the rest, enjoying it.

As he left the convenience store, he ended up running into a familiar face.

"Danny-kun?..."Makoto said upon seeing him.

Danny, with his mouth still full, saw her and gasped when he saw his pretty, new friend all of a sudden.

"Mwa-koh-toh!..."Danny said but realized that his mouth was full.

He swallowed in an instant, realizing how dorky he must have looked right now in front of her.

"Uh...sorry about that..."He apologized, embarrassed.

"It's okay..."The tall girl said.

"So, how is the meat bun?..."She asked, gesturing to the food that he was eating.

"Uh...really good. I really get why Japan has so many famous foods that people in the 90's dubbed into donuts..."Danny said, appreciative of the tasty cuisine in this country.

The tall and pretty girl giggled at this.

"Glad to hear that. I was about to get one of them to be honest. I just came back from...something... and forgot to grab something to eat..."Makoto said, leaving a few key details out.

"Really...well...I was about to get another one too to be honest..."Danny said.

"I see. Well, glad you like them..."Makoto said, with a giggle.

"If you want...why don't I treat you to one and we get some together? I'll treat you..."Danny offered suddenly, but he would soon realize what he said.

"Did I just ask out this really pretty girl?! No, I'm just offering my thanks from our first time meeting each other. She'd never think it was a date..."He thought, believing she'd reject him.

Makoto blinked, surprised by the sudden gesture.

"That's kind of you to offer, Danny-kun, but you don't have to..."She said, but the ghost boy was being surprisingly insistent here.

"I don't mind...In fact, I insist. Besides, you let me have some of your lunch, remember. Think of this as my way of thanking you from the time you saved me from those street thugs and for sharing your lunch with me. I owe you for that..."Danny said.

"I was happy to do so, you don't owe me anything..."Makoto said.

"Still...I insist. Come on, let a new friend treat ya..."Danny offered, mostly since he still wanted to hang out with her.

Makoto blinked before she smiled.

"Okay, if you insist..."The tall girl said.

The ghost boy felt his heart skip a beat at that smile.

"Buying another Pork Bun is definitely worth seeing that smile on her face. I almost wish this trip lasts forever..."He thought as he followed the tall and pretty girl back into the convenience store.

5 minutes later

The two teenagers were now sitting together at a nearby bench, and both were eating their meat buns.

As they ate, they chatted as well.

"So, how is everything going on your first time in Japan? Enjoying it?..."She asked.

"Oh...pretty good. I...managed to see and experience what I wanted to since I got here..."Danny said vaguely.

"That's nice to hear..."Makoto said before noticing a cut on his arm.

She frowned, as she suddenly got upset when she saw it.

"Danny-kun, did you run into more punks? They rough you up?..."She asked.

Danny looked at it and groaned when he finally noticed the cut.

"Oh right...that stupid jester monster thing must have scratched me when I wasn't looking...I can't believe that I didn't notice that until now..."He thought, before smiling at the tall girl.

"Oh, don't worry about it. I...accidentally scratched myself on a wire fence, that's all. Honest..."He lied.

Makoto soon got into his face, surprising the dark haired boy by her sudden closeness.

"Uh...whoa, she's really close. Not that I hate it..."He thought, blushing as the tall girl examined his injury.

"Oh my, that's quite the cut, we better patch you up before it gets infected..."She said as she rummaged through her purse.

"Uh...what are you doing?..."He asked as the tall girl then pulled out some handle medical supplies from her purse.

"Come on, let me treat that wound on you..."Makoto said.

"You...don't have to do that. I'm a fast healer..."The dark haired boy said.

The tall girl would have none of it.

"Don't worry, I've treated my own wounds plenty of times before. Mostly my friend Usagi too..."She said, as she pulled out some rubbing alcohol and dabbed it on a piece of cotton.

"Hold out your arm and try to endure this for a moment. It will only sting for a moment..."She said as Danny felt a little nervous.

"But I-..."Danny said, immediately feeling the rubbing alcohol on his open cut.

"Hold still and try to relax. This will all be over soon, trust me..."Makoto said, being serious.

Danny decided to listen to the tall girl and let her wrap up his injury. He hissed when the alcohol soaked cotton continued to treat his cut as she cleaned his wound.

After a few moments of cleaning the found, Makoto placed a bandage on it and proudly grinned at her handiwork.

"There, all better..."Makoto said, smiling.

"Uh...thanks..."Danny said, as he looked at the bandage.

"Don't mention it. When you are friends with an aspiring doctor, you pick some of these things up..."Makoto said, as she mentally reminded herself to thank Ami later for teaching her these medical tips.

"An aspiring doctor?..."Danny asked.

"Ami is one of my best friends, you've met her at the arcade...she was the one with the short hair. Her mother is a doctor and her own dream is to become a doctor like her mother and help treat a lot of people. I learned a thing or two thanks to her..."Makoto explained

"Huh...neat..."Danny admitted.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Ami cures a few diseases when she gets her Medical PhD. She works harder than anyone..." Makoto said, sounding very proud of her best friend.

"Good to hear..."He said, before they went back to eating.

As they ate and chatted, Danny smiled at seeing her acting so carefree again.

"If only Sam or Tucker had aspirations outside of video games or raging against the machine..." He thought.

"So...uh...Makoto-chan? Uh...you did say that I can call you that, right?..."Danny asked, worried if he's overstepping boundaries.

The tall girl just smiled at him.

"Sure. I don't mind..."Makoto said, still smiling.

"Well, since you did help with my arm...uh...well...I was planning on getting some ice cream after this...uh...wanna come along?..."Danny offered.

It was kind of a lie, since he didn't really have any plans, but he really wanted to spend some more time with the very tall, pretty and nice Japanese girl who treated him like a friend, even though she didn't know a thing about him.

Makoto blinked upon hearing this.

"Are you sure? You don't have to, Danny? I'm fine with just the meat buns you got me. Honest..."She said.

The ghost boy waved it off with a smile.

"I insist. Help me explore Japan's tasty treats. Something to potentially smuggle back home..."He joked, making her chuckle at that part.

"Plus, you're the first friend I've made since I got to Japan and I really want to get to know you better. I'd like no one else to be my guide..."Danny said.

"Plus, spending time with you helps me relax and forget about some of my recent grim problems. It helps that you're a babe too..."He mentally added.

Makoto wasn't really expecting any of this to be honest. However, this boy kept insisting on spending time with her, which made her feel somewhat at happy, even if she thought it was for platonic reasons.

"What do you say, Makoto? Got some time to spare?..."He asked as the tall girl blinked in surprise.

She felt her face turn warm as she admired his smile.

"He really seems to want to get to know me. Maybe... he likes me? Hmm... No, he's just being nice and trying to express gratitude, that's all. After all, boys don't like girls that are taller than them. You learned that a long time ago..."Makoto thought, trying to remain realistic.

The thought actually bummed her out a bit, but she was used to stuff like that. Still... seeing his sincerity and genuine desire to be around Makoto made her smile a bit. Her heart skipped a beat as the boy waited for her answer.

"Okay, ice cream it is..."Makoto said, smiling at him.

This brought a smile on Danny's face.

"Yes!..."Danny thought as he did a mental fist pump.

The two teens soon left to get some ice cream together, unaware of what the next few days would bring them.

However, right now, the ghost boy was just glad that he got to spend some time with his new friend, who he was starting to get drawn to with each encounter with each other.

Little did they know, this was going to be of greater importance for them moving forward.
