Chapter 6: Pain
Jacob
Sometimes it seemed as though I were destined for a life full of pain. I often wondered how often a heart could be ripped apart, trampled, mangled up, and still remain beating.
For awhile I had been happy. The tribe was happy. Until it all came crashing down to an end one night in the most painful way that a person could imagine.
It was almost eighteen years ago. Renesmee and I had been married for only a month when she got pregnant with our daugther. I had never been so happy in my entire. I was married to the love of my life and we were about to have a baby together.
We weren't the only couple living on the reservation that were expecting a baby. Sam's wife Emily was pregnant with their third child. A girl that they would eventually name Delilah. Seth and his wife were about to have their first child. A boy they would later name Henry. Embry and Kim had just had a m son named Edgar. Paul and Rachel had twins Jeremey and Diego.
Then of course their was Leah. Leah never found her imprint. She never did find a man that wanted to be with her. It wasn't because there was a lack of interest. Men found her beautiful but it was Leah's temper that drove them away quickly. Bite your head off wasn't exactly a figure of speech with her. She would never admit this willingly but she was afraid of getting close to someone else after what happened between her, Sam, and Emily.
There were other things she did long for. She wanted a baby. Since she wasn't having any luck in the romance department she had another idea. Artificial insemination. We weren't sure that was going to work. We didn't even think that she could get pregnant being the only female shifter in our history. Us guys tried to convince her that she shouldn't do it because it would be a huge waste of money. But Leah being, well, Leah she ignored us and went through with it anyway.
We were all very shocked when she did get pregnant. Leah was happier. I'd never seen her more happy then when she had her baby boy. She named him Greyson. Finally she was happy.
We were all happy. Vampires were no longer a threat. We all had wonderful loving families. Things had never looked better for the pack and the tribe as a whole.
I was over the moon happy when our little girl was born. I was a father now. I hadn't really ever imagined that one day I would become a parent. Young children had never really appealed to me before Nessie came along. And now there I was holding my own daughter.
I tried to be the most devoting father and husband that I could be for my family. I took care of my daughter the best that I could. I vowed that I wouldn't let anything or anyone ever hurt my family.
I failed them both. It happened one night when were all sleeping. Someone broke into the house and stole our baby girl. Every pack member's newborn baby was stolen that night. Only we didn't discover it until morning.
From the strong stench we knew that it was a vampire that had stolen our babies. It was everywhere. This wasn't a vampire we had ever come across before.
We followed that scent with a vengeance before it vanished completely. We didn't give up though. We searched all of Forks, Port Angeles, Seattle, and the entire state of Washington to no avail.
Nessie called her parents to tell them what happened and soon all of the Cullens had joined in on the search. It was all to no avail though.
The pain that accompanied the loss of my daughter was unbearable. It was the most crushing feeling I had ever experienced. I had failed to protect my daughter. She was out there somewhere in danger or worse. There was so little that I could do to comfort my wife. Seeing Nessie in pain was just...awful. As my imprint I could feel her pain on top of my own. I wished that there was something I could do to make her pain go away at least but I knew that was impossible.
The affect this had on the pack was pretty much indescribable. As a pack our minds were all linked to one another. We all felt one another's pain. It was our pain.
Leah became more bitter and angry than she ever had before. She'd finally begun to find happiness in her life until her baby was stolen from her. Sam put on a tough exterior. Seth lost his usual happy go lucky personality. Paul's temper issues became nearly impossible for him to control.
This was something that we never were able to come back from. I tried not to give up hope that one day we might find our children. Even if we didn't find our children until they were old and gray. The wolf gene was going to skip their generation entirely since they needed to come across the scent of vampires at the right time in their lives. So they would age. While we, who refused to give up our wolf selves, would never age a day.
After a few years we all went our separate ways. We still kept in vert little contact because we never stopped shifting. But we never saw each other in person anymore. Also most of the time we never shifted at the same time.
One day when I came home from work I found Nessie with the biggest smile on her face. I was shocked because I hadn't seen her smile since before our Lisa was kidnapped.
"My grandfather just called. Jacob. They found her. They found all of them,"
