Chapter one

Aycee's POV

I was at the temple for the first time after Obi-Wan had rescued me. And I was in awe of how huge it was.

"Welcome, Alycee, I hope you come to like it here. My name is Master Windu. Your master asked me to watch over you until he returned to Corrasant."

I nodded. Not quite sure what to say. After all, this man scared me, but if my master trusted him, then I should learn to not be afraid of him.

"Follow me."

Again, I nodded, following close behind him. I didn't want to get lost. I wondered what my new life would look like, now that I was no longer chained up in my dark, damp room.

We arrived at where I assumed he lived, and he opened the door. "It's probably not what your used to, but most Jedi living quarters look like this. Are you even listening?"

I nodded and handed the note to him my master had written. He quickly skimmed over it. "I see, I'm sorry for getting mad, young one."

I smiled to let him know I understood.

"I'm sure you're hungry. Stay here, I'll bring something for you to eat."

Windu's POV

I wasn't sure of what to make of Obi-wan's new apprentice. She was quiet and timid, and almost seemed afraid of everyone around her.

How he got her to trust him, I'll never know. Then again, Anakin was as timid and afraid as she was before he got him to open up. I'm positive that Alycee will open up eventually, for now, I must be patient.

I grabbed her an apple and a protein bar. As in the note that Obi-wan had written, he had mentioned that he suspected she was intentionally starved. He had also written that he suspected she had been beaten, as she jumped a little when he raised his hand to get the attention of his troops.

And due to how timid she was, I almost want to think with everything Obi-wan suspected, and with my own suspicions, that she may have been a part of an illegal slave trade.

I walked back to my living quarters and handed Alycee the apple and protein bar I had given her.

"I hope that's not too little for you," I said. "Tomorrow I'll take you to the healing wing, and get you checked for injuries and other things we need to look out for."

She nodded as she bit into the apple.

Alycee's POV

The man came back with food I didn't recognize. But had seen in picture books my mom let me read when I behaved. The bar, on the other hand, I did recognize. And knew that both the red-looking fruit and that would be more than enough.

I bit into the red fruit first. I was surprised at how sweet and juicy it was. The man must have seen my surprised look.

"You've never had an apple before, have you?"

So that's what that was. I shook my head no. "They're a good snack, but by no means a proper meal."

I wondered what a proper meal looked like. I don't think I've ever had one. I was pretty sure that mom and dad only ever gave meals to my sister, who I hoped was still safe after she helped me escape.
