The tension in the room seemed to pulsate. Ariadne, slightly breathless, watched as Cobb stood in front of her. He was so close that if he reached out, and took a swipe, he would have been able to hit her. She stayed, watching his movements.
"Ariadne..." his voice was hoarse. "Ariadne, I-"
"Cobb. Just tell me the truth." She folded her arms, her defensive posture refusing to budge. "Tell me what happened."
Cobb took a deep breath. She noticed tears were forming in his eyes, and decided to ignore them. "sit down."
As though surprised by the firmness of her tone, he nodded. As he sank into the seat, she decided to start questioning him. She looked at him, remembering how she had pushed for answers when they had been starting the Fischer job. He rubbed his face, and she sat opposite.
"Where did this start?"
Cobb swallowed, and blinked. "When you and Arthur were starting to get together." She flinched, but he continued. "I saw how the two of you interacted during the Fischer job, and wondered how you had become so interested so quickly."
Ariadne blinked. "We worked together. We shared things-"
"But I shared things with you too!" Cobb was leaning forward, and she had a sudden suspicion where this was leading. "You came into my dreams-"
"-memories-"
"OK, my memories, and I shared them with you." He leaned back. "I thought you and I-"
"You thought that if we pulled off the job, and you got back to the States, that we could be together?"
"Perhaps," he admitted, slowly. "Ariadne, you remind me of Mal. A lot."
"What?" she felt almost offended. "Mal?"
"Not as she was in my dreams. But when we were married." Cobb looked at her, his eyes moistening again. "Bright, creative, clever. Like you."
"Cobb-"
"So, I thought that maybe-"
She shook her head. "Your hopes were based on what you thought I was - not what I am." She swallowed. "But what you did to Arthur-"
"Jealousy," Cobb said slowly. "I felt it-"
"No, you wanted to do it," she retorted, her face clouding. "You decided to do it, and planned it."
"I didn't mean for it to go this far." Cobb leaned forward, rubbing his face. "I thought that I'd implant the idea, and Arthur would run with it-"
"So getting him institutionalised wasn't part of the plan?"
"No. That's when I knew it had gone too far- but I couldn't tell the police."
Ariadne stood up. "Well, you might have to now."
"What?!" Cobb stood up, his expression suddenly tensing. "Ariadne-"
"Cobb. You have a choice." Ariadne's voice was calm, but it possessed a lethal edge. "Go to Arthur, and extract. Or, I will go to the police."
"If I go down-" Cobb's eyes met hers - "so do you."
"That's a risk I'm willing to take."
Silence fell. Slowly, he nodded.
