A Wedding Story (Part 2)
Jane was exhausted but happy. She was leaning against a table, a glass of champagne in her hand. She was watching the dancing crowd in the middle of the room. There were happy smiles everywhere. She was smiling as well. The wedding was beautiful. Seeing Sarah and her husband so full of joy and love made all the stress worth it. Now, after a long day the sun was setting behind the trees, casting streaks of red on the snow. Already some guests were excusing themselves but others just seemed to have a never-ending source of energy. Or caffeine. She got a glimpse of Sarah in her beautiful white dress dancing arm in arm with her husband. She looked as if she couldn't be happier. It was the same expression she had seen on Sif when she had been dancing with Thor on her wedding night.
"Would my lady consider doing me the honor of dancing with me?" Jane looked sideways and her smile grew brighter. Loki was approaching witch a casual smile on his lips. Her heart skipped a beat, as usual.
"It would be my pleasure, my prince" she said, watching his eyes sparkle and his smile growing wide. He took Jane's glass out of her hand and set it down on the table. Then he entwined his fingers with hers and lead her towards the dancing crowd. With a swift motion he turned and pulled her toward him. She squeaked and laughed as she bumped against him. He chuckled as he put his hand on her waist and took her hand in his. She let him take the lead, he was a much better dancer than she was, and soon they were surrounded by dancing pairs. For a while they were just dancing along without talking. After the fifth song Loki slowed down. Jane looked at him questioningly and was just about to ask him what was wrong when he leaned down to her.
"I want to show you something, Jane.", he whispered in her ear and smiled at her confusion. "Come on." He said and lead her through the crowd and tables until they reached the glass wall, that made up one side of the room. "Here", he took off his jacket and put it around Jane's shoulders.
"Are we going outside?" She put her arms through the sleeves and looked through the window. The sky was clear now but it must be freezing outside.
"Yes, but don't worry, you won't be cold." He opened the door and ice-cold air swept inside, sending goose-bumps and chills all over her body. Quickly he stepped outside on the porch and pulled her with him. She shivered as she waited for him to close the door. He turned around and stepped close to her. He lifted his hands and put them to either side of her face, then he leaned down and kissed her on the forehead. Warmth spread through her immediately. She closed her eyes and let the prickling heat reach the last parts of her body. Loki drew back. "Better?"
"Better", she said. "Thank you!"
Loki nodded and turned around. She followed him to the steps at the far side of the porch but hesitated. He was a few steps ahead when he realized she wasn't following him anymore. He turned to her and raised an eyebrow. "My shoes", Jane said, looking down at her sandals. "They're not made for walking in deep snow."
Loki was back at her side immediately. "Pardon me, my lady." And with that he lifted her off the ground, one arm under her knees, the other under her back, giving her as much comfort as possible. Once again she was amazed by his unearthly strength. She could have been a feather, it wouldn't have made any difference. With swift movements he carried her down the steps and through the deep snow. She looked down and watched with amazement as the snow seemed to part in front of him. He walked through the backyard towards the woods.
She tightened her arms around his neck and put her head on his shoulder.
"Thank you for going with me to this wedding, Loki. And thank you for pretending to be Midgardian. That means a lot to me." She felt his arms tighten around her. "You know that I'd do anything for you Jane. Anything to make you happy." Jane didn't reply but instead she leaned forward and buried her head in the curve of his neck. The warmth in her heart seemed to have increased to a burning fire.
Loki kept walking for a couple of minutes, through the woods and up a hill. When he reached the top of the hill he stopped and carefully put her down. The snow moved out of her way and left her standing on dry ground.
"Turn this way" Loki said and turned her around. Her breath caught as she took in the view. A lake stretched out in front of them, glittering in thousand shades of red and blue. The lake was surrounded by trees, looking mysterious and beautiful in the twilight. Beyond that, she could see the outlines of the mountains, gleaming red and silver. Soft fog was sweeping through the air.
"Loki, this is..." She couldn't find the right words.
"I know", he said, entwining his fingers with hers. They just stood there watching the sun disappear, lost in their own thoughts.
"What are you thinking, my love?" She lifted her eyes from the sunset to him. Jane hesitated. Then she said: "I was thinking about Sarah and Sif. How happy they both looked when they were dancing with their husbands. As if there wasn't anything else, just them. As if the whole world was spinning for them and nothing else."
His green eyes sparkled when he smiled at her. Not a mischievous or sarcastic smile, but one full of love and affection. He cupped her face with his hands. "One day", he said with a voice that made Jane's heart melt. "One day, my love, I will see that smile on your face." And with that he drew her close and kissed her, and in this moment, it felt like the world was spinning just for them.
To be continued!
