It was a bright sunny morning, the sky perfectly clear yet Astrid was like a stormcloud all day wrestling with her thoughts, her mind must have twisted stuff up, that often happens, she knew Hiccup had a dragon plushie called a Nadder according to Snotlout. With a jolt she realized she had never actually seen it, surely if she saw it, it would look nothing like the "Nadder" in the woods, with its beautiful colors standing on its hindlegs and its crown of spikes jutting out the back of its head. She had also believed she saw the Nadder attack the wolves with her tail spines though all this couldent be true right? Why didn't it appear to her before?
As the others were playing some sort of ball game outside with Heather saying they all needed fresh air, very clearly pointing to Hiccup. From what she could see was curled up in a tree drawing the mystical Narnia, he was rather good at climbing she realized. He had refused to talk to anyone though, especially Snotlout as they gave each other a wide berth, Snotlout had tried talking to Hiccup a day earlier but he had ignored him pointedly staring at the bowl of cereal he was eatting like it was the most interesting thing in the world.
Astrid then went back to focusing on the task at hand she pulled out the- well it was more of a rag than a plush really, but it was unmistakably the same dragon with the crown of horns on the back, though it was hard to tell as the colors had faded. She could faintly see the stitching of what would be a spined tail smoothed down.
This meant… this meant Narnia was real and that they owed Hiccup a big apology.
She ran outside ignoring the others requests to play as she scrambled up the tree and sat down next to Hiccup who scooted over a bit looking at her uneasily wondering why she had come over and why she was clutching Nadder in her hands which he quickly snatched back hugging it not caring one bit right now if it was not very manly.
She took his sketchbook despite his protesting and his attempts to take it back eventually she was done leaving the others to be watching them out of the corner of their eyes they were too far to hear anything. She handed him back his sketchbook with a rough image of what the Nadder she saw looked like as Hiccup looked at her dubiously.
"Ive been to Narnia," she said trying to speed up the conversation and unlike Snotlout she didnet have a problem admitting when she was wrong, "I'm sorry for not believing you at first about Narnia, please forgive me,"
He looked hopeful yet wary, which was to be expected considering Snotlout most likely lied about not going there, though what did Hiccup expect? It was Snotlout there was no way he was just going to be nice and tell everyone instead of being a scum bucket, especially when it was Hiccup asking, it was Snotlout afterall, "You have?"
"Yes I have," she said trying to smile at him though it looked more like a grimace considering she was scowling almost constantly.
He didn't seem to mind though and got right to the point, "Are you going to tell the others now?"
"We have to think about this logically," Astrid replied earning a confused expression from Hiccup, "They would never believe us, they would think we were just playing a game, I thought you guys were just playing a game..."
"Thanks for the faith in me," he responded sarcastically but relaxing a bit knowing that Astrid was on his side.
"You need real solid evidence," she continued ignoring the sarcastic comment, "Next time we go to Narnia perhaps we could bring a Camera or something back like snow? Anything really-"
She gained a horrified expression on her face as a thought dawned on her, how did someone make that Nadder plush without being to Narnia? They didn't, someone in Hiccup's line had been to Narnia she realized.
"Are you alright?"
"Who made that?" she asked incredulously.
"My grandmother made it for my mother when she was little,"
"I think your grandmother has been to Narnia," said Astrid knowing the young boy would catch on.
"What- Your right! How else would she know how to make this? And it was her house afterall!"
"That's not all," Astrid continued remembering the strange talk with Old Wrinkly earlier and how he seemed to have a pretty good idea how this worked and defended Hiccup's idea, "We- we told the Professor because we thought you had gone loco because of the war-"
"I'm not crazy… though I guess you make sense…"
"Well I know that now! But when we told your grandfather he believed you, going on about different worlds ahd different times and they didn't teach logic in school anymore,"
"Then why didn't he tell me? He had me explain my side of the story yesterday," he said quietly and disbelievingly, "He could have told me I wasn't insane!"
"Like I said maybe he did, maybe he didn't, just some thoughts," Astrid said quickly, not wanting to distress him more as they sat in awkward silence.
"I know where the camera is," said Hiccup, breaking the silence and jumping down the tree from branch to branch and running towards the house while Astrid ran after him getting strange glances from the other kids but decided not to press on the matter.
"Lets go now!" said Hiccup eagerly leading the way with Astrid, towards the door when they were stopped by Dagur.
"Are you ok?" he asked suspiciously, he didn't think Astrid was one for games so he guessed it was something else, still she could be just playing along, he didn't know why though.
Since Hiccup was an atrocious liar Astrid spoke up, "Hiccup and I were just going to go take some pictures by the river,"
Dagur calmed down after that and asked if he could go to, the two newly found allies exchanged a glance at each other, which Dagur found suspicious, since when were they so close?
They agreed hoping not to arouse more suspicion and have them get rid of the wardrobe or something, they wernet terribly down though knowing they could always do this tomorrow besides the river was pretty anyways.
The rest of the day the trio hanged out, Astrid and Hiccup because they wanted to, Dagur because he was suspicious though he had nothing to base his accusations on fairly.
While there they saw a snake catch a fish its sleek body allowing it to somehow move through the water and then slither off. They also found a tiny fish and tadpole nursery on the side of the river not quite connecting with the rest just a large puddle on the river bank which was covered by a fallen tree the water was murky though making it hard to see baby fishes.
Hiccup insisted on saving the poor little fishies because their little water bank on the side of the river was going to dry up soon, so when they got back home they were a muddy mess, though Astrid admitted it was worth it and McCreedy almost had a heart attack seeing their dirty footprints in the house as they went to take a shower and looked like she wanted to whip them.
At night the two of them snuck out careful not to disturb anyone as they crept out through the dark house and towards the Wardrobe, when they entered it was also night in Narnia, a mere coincidence and it was snowing hard. Unbeknownst to them this was the White Witch battling for control of Narnia with Aslan who was melting the place though having a hard time.
Now Astrid prided herself in not being easily frightened and could endure harsh elements and in general not being a sissy, but this cold was not right, it was freezing numb your fingers and anything else it calls cold, "M-maybe we s-shhould h-head b-back, and t-try in the mo-morning!" called out Astrid with chattering teeth as Hiccup reluctantly nodded and they waled out of the wardrobe still shivering.
"Do you think they will believe us?"
"Well once we get pictures they will Have to," said Astrid reassuringly as they crept back into their beds and fell asleep ready to explore the Narnian woods tomorrow and prove they were right.
Don't worry things will pick up soon!
