Author's note: Please read the author's note at the beginning of chapter 5.
"C'mon, let's get our boy home." John said to Dean and wrapped his arm around Sam's thin waist, being careful of the bites on Sam's body and arms, and pulled Sam closer to him. He couldn't help but feel guilty that Sam was like this, "if I hadn't of hit Sam and pushed him away, none of this would've happened. Sam wouldn't have been caught in the first place and then nearly raped by that evil son of a bitch." He thought sadly and unconsciously tightened his arm around Sam's waist and his hand around Sam's arm that was draped limply over his shoulder in a rage still aimed at the dead vampire. He didn't hear the pained grunt coming from his youngest due to his rough treatment and his eldest shouting at him. He was brought out of his thoughts by someone slapping the back of his head.
"Ow! Damn it, what the hell?!" He yelled.
"Dad, be gentler with Sam. You're hurting him." Dean replied and John immediately loosened his hold muttering apologies to both his sons.
"Crap, I'm so sorry Sammy!" John said to Sam who had his head raised but his eyes screwed tightly shut and his teeth were clenched together.
"Sammy?" Dean asked anxiously and Sam slowly opened his eyes to slits, his hazel eyes showing nothing but sadness and pain. John also saw Sam's expressive eyes which only added to his guilt. "Aw Sammy, kiddo. This is all my fault, I'd do anything to change everything that's happened." The two eldest Winchesters waited for Sam to answer but after a couple of seconds Sam's eyes closed again and he went limp again. Dean's worried eyes looked up to his father's, looking for comfort and reassurance.
"He'll be okay, Dean. We'll get him back to the motel and patch him up. He'll be as good as new." John reassured Dean but Dean nodded wearily, not looking completely convinced.
"You guys should get Sam home, we'll clean up here." Bobby's voice sounded which startled John slightly, he had forgot the other hunters were in the room. He smiled appreciatively at Bobby before looking back at Dean, he said "let's go." Dean nodded again, and then they both silently carried Sam out of the house.
Upon reaching the car Dean let go off Sam letting John take all of Sam's weight causing John to stagger slightly.
"Jesus Dean, warn a guy! What have you been feeding him anyway?" John grunted trying to get a better, more comfortable grip on Sam.
"Sorry, I'll get the doors." Dean moved quickly to the car and opened the backdoor and climbed in. "Give him here, and I don't know why he weighs so much, he never hardly eats and when he does it's some healthy rabbit food of some sort." He replied chuckling slightly to himself. John chuckled as well and tugged Sam to the car and let Dean take Sam and pull Sam into the backseat. It took a few moments of rearranging Sam's long limbs before he and Dean were in comfortable positions with Sam closely snuggled against Dean's side and his head was leaning on Dean's shoulder, Dean wrapped his arm around Sam's shoulders. John got into the driver's seat and looked at his sons in the rear view mirror and smiled sadly at a fond memory of Sam and Dean always slept like they were now when they were kids.
"Watch him until we get back to the motel." John ordered.
"But don't you think we should take him to the hospital? These wounds are quite bad." Dean asked whilst looking down at the bites on Sam's torso, cringing at how many there were on his chest alone, never mind his arms.
"No, they'll ask too many questions." John replied before continuing "Trevor and Bobby can patch up the worst of the bites, we'll do the rest." Dean was still uncertain but he decided to focus on helping Sam get better. His eyes still scanned Sam's body checking the severity of his wounds, only then did he notice his neck was smeared with blood, he gently tilted Sam's head back to see the wound better and gasped at the deep bite on the right side of Sam's neck.
John heard his eldest gasp and cried out in panic "What? What Dean? Is he okay?!"
"Yeah sorry dad, he's just got a deep bite on his neck." Dean felt bad for making John panic.
"Crap Dean, don't do that." John took a deep breath to try to calm himself down. "We'll be home in a minute." For the next couple of minutes the only sound that could be heard in the car was Sam struggling to keep his breathing in rhythm, he was semi-conscious and he could feel the worry radiating from Dean, unfortunately he could feel every bite on his body and the agony that came along with those bites.
John breathed a sigh of relief when the motel came into view, he stopped the car outside their room, not caring that he was parked horizontally across four parking spaces. He threw his door open and rushed out of the car just barely managing to close the driver's door behind him. Dean was already out the car, trying to pull Sam out on his own.
"Dean, hold up, I'll help you with him." John said catching a limp Sam, keeping him from falling to the floor. The two eldest Winchester's made quick work of getting Sam up between them again and they dashed towards the room. Upon reaching the door, John dug the key out of his pocket and pushed the door open, he side-stepped into the room, pulling Sam with him, causing Dean to stumble through the door as he tried to keep a hold of his little brother, scared that if he let go, Sam would be taken and harmed again.
The two older Winchester were silent as they carried Sam over to the bed furthest from the door and gently laying Sam down, Dean made sure Sam was in a comfortable position whilst John disappeared into the bathroom and returned a second later with two white clothes, he stepped up to the bed and passed one of the clothes to Dean.
"Here, try to clean some of the blood off of him so we can see his wounds. Jack's used to be a doctor, he'll have a better first aid kit than we do. We'll dress the wounds when they get back." Dean nodded absent-minded, not really listening, and sat down on the bed at Sam's hip. He gently took Sam's wrist and dabbed the cloth at the bites on Sam's arm, wincing as the cloth slowly turned red. John sat on Sam's other side and wiped Sam's chest. The two worked quietly as they cleaned Sam up, Sam stirred a couple of times and groaned when Dean or John pressed ever so slightly too hard on one of the bites, but he was quickly lulled back to sleep with soothing, whispered words from his brother or father. When they had finished cleaning Sam's wounds John took the cloth from Dean and took them back to the bathroom. He stayed in the bathroom for a couple of minutes, trying to calm down and keep himself on crying.
He hated seeing his youngest like this, he hated that both of his boys had been hurt so many times since they were born because of his fierce ambition to kill the demon that had killed Mary. He hated that Sam had been dragged back into the hunting life after he had escaped to college, which was his fault, if he hadn't of left Dean and made him worry, he wouldn't have gone to get Sam, Sam wouldn't have lost his girlfriend and wouldn't have been pulled back in.
Knocking on the door woke him from his miserable thoughts and he quickly pulled himself together before going back though to the main room and to the door, opening it for Bobby and Jack.
"Where's Trev?" He asked whilst looking out incase he missed his old friend somewhere outside.
"He got a call on the way from his boy. Something about a werewolf. We didn't catch where, just that his boy needed him, he said he was sorry he couldn't stick around and catch up." Bobby said as he eyed the youngest hunter on the bed, he looked a lot better without the blood covering his body.
"Ah no worries, his boy needed him, that's understandable." John replied sadly as he also looked over at Sam. Dean looked at him reassuringly and John felt his heart swell in pride. Dean was so strong and cared so deeply for his family that he continued to reassure his father even when he himself was scared for Sam. This added to John's guilt knowing he should be the one offering reassurance and comfort to Dean, not the over way round.
Jack approached the bed slowly with his medical bag, weary of John's eldest son. He had heard from Bobby on the way to the Winchester's motel room how protective Dean was of Sam, so much that Bobby had actually warned him not to touched Sam without permission from Dean.
"May I?" He asked, feeling stupid that he was weary of a boy just over half his age. The middle Winchester nodded but didn't move from Sam's side.
Jack moved round to the other side of Sam and gently set his bag down on the bed and opened it. He rummaged clumsily through it before he got his nerves in check. He pulled out some cotton swabs, bandages and some alcohol to clean the bites.
"Hold him steady." He told Dean "he's not going to like this." Dean nodded and pressed Sam's shoulders into the bed to keep him still. When the alcohol came in contact with a bite on Sam's chest he bucked wildly and whimpered in agony.
"Shhh, it's okay Sammy, just calm down." Dean hushed Sam and despite the ex-doctor still cleaning the bites Sam quieted. This amazed Jack, although Bobby had warned him of Dean's protectiveness, he hadn't thought that the boys were so close that they drew comfort from each other's presence.
Jack quickly finished cleaning the bites, hating that he caused the boy even more pain than he was in already, he hadn't talked to Sam yet but something about the way Sam looked whilst asleep, so young and innocent, made him want to help the boy even more.
He bandaged the bite carefully, sweating under the scrutiny of Dean Winchester, still feeling stupid that
he was nervous around Dean.
"Done." He announced once he had finished.
"Will he be alright?" John asked anxiously.
"Yeah, he'll be fine, just bed rest is needed. He should sleep through until tomorrow." He assured the worried father.
"Thanks Jack." John replied.
"No problem Johnny." Jack stood and collected any leftover bandages and handed them to Dean.
"Here, you'll need these."
"Thanks" Dean smiled a small smile up at him.
John seed Bobby and Jack out when they left whilst Dean settled himself next to Sam on the bed and quickly drifted off to sleep before John had came back in. John smiled at the sight of his two boys sleeping on the same bed, he remembered the first time he had found Dean in baby Sammy's crib a couple of days after Mary's death with a sad smile, he remembered how peaceful they both looked in sleep as they do now.
He also decided it was time for bed and crawled into the bed next to his boys and also quickly found himself dozing.

The next day...
John woke early the next day, ready to apologize to Sam for treating him so badly before he was taken by the vampires. He went to the dinner to get coffee and breakfast for them all, even Sam just incase he wanted anything. He was ready to cater to Sam's every need to show how much he loves his son.
He had woke Dean when he had come back into the room, and Sam woke up not long after Dean. The two eldest Winchester were overjoyed to have Sam back with them, both hugging him when Sam had gained the strength to stand on his own.
"Sammy I'm so sorry." John said whilst tearing up a bit. "This was all my fault." He continued.
"Dad, it's okay." Sam assured him "stuff happens." Sam shrugged. "You did all you could. You got me out of there, in the nick of time as well and I want to thank you for that." John smiled proudly at Sam and grabbed him back into a hug, the guilt not weighing so heavy in his heart anymore.

Three weeks later...
Sam was fully healed apart from some scars that hadn't faded yet. Dean and John had stuck close for the three weeks, taking it in turns to go get food and whatever supplies they needed, the other was on 'Sam watch', making sure Sam had all the care and attention he needed. Sam was grateful that they hadn't forced him onto another hunt already, which Sam had expected his father to do, but a hunt hadn't even been mentioned, and Sam was impressed, he had guessed both Dean and John were itching to get back to hunting but they hadn't showed any indication of it. If Sam were to honest, he still didn't think he was ready to hunt again, although he would never admit it, he was slightly scared, he was scared that the next thing they hunted would also develop a creepy obsession with him, and next time he might be so lucky to escape like last time.
Sam was also glad that his brother and dad had finally let him go outside a few days ago after two weeks and a half; he never realized how much he'd miss fresh air after being told to stay in bed since being rescued from Luther by his family.
Dean had decided that he was allowed to go to a bar with him for an hour or so, but that was only if he promised to stay close to Dean and not leave the bar. At the moment Dean was watching him fidgeting awkwardly in the mirror, trying to tug his sleeves down over his arms to cover the ugly scars on his forearm.
"Sammy c'mon, the bars will be closing soon." Dean teased.
"Shut up Dean, you could go alone, you know? I bet you ditch me for some girl anyway." Sam huffed, now happy with his sleeve, but now nervously fixing his hair.
"You know I wouldn't leave you Sam, not after everything that's happened." Dean was suddenly seriously and Sam hated that Dean had changed. He wouldn't go so far to say that he missed Dean's cocky, smart-mouthed attitude, but this Dean was too serious, too afraid that he'd say something that would upset Sam.
Sam sighed, not having the energy to call Dean out on his attitude change "thanks Dean" he said simply, although being slightly annoyed at Dean, he was strangely touched that his brother had thought so much about his well-being that he was ready to lay off on the snide, too confident remarks.
"Boy!" He heard his dad yell from the kitchen before he appeared in the doorway.
"Sam, before you go." John started as he walked up to Sam. "I called Stanford. I wanted to know if it'd be okay for you to go back if you wanted; well they said that'd be fine, I just thought... If you wanted to, I mean... I know after Jess, but you deserve it Sam and I wouldn't mind..." John stuttered out and Sam gasped, he never would've thought his dad would be happy with him leaving the family.
Sam had thought about going back to college, but that was before he was captured by the vampires, and now he wasn't sure. Now that he had is family and they were seemingly closer and stronger than ever, he didn't think he could leave. Plus he had patched things up with his father, and his stubborn dad had swallowed his pride and had made the first move to parch their relationship up, so Sam felt that he owed him for that. Plus he had enjoyed the last three weeks with his family, just relaxing and acting like a normal family, and Sam believed that that had changed his mind about going back to college.
"Well?" John's voice tore him from his thoughts and he met his father's eyes.
"No." He found himself saying.
"No?" John and Dean asked.
"No, I mean, I can't, not now anyway." He replied.
"What do you mean not now anyway?" Dean just asked this time.
"I just feel like we're a family again, and I never realized how much I wanted that until now." He said. "But if I do this, stay I mean, dad we've got to have more times like the last three weeks, just us being a family. That's all I'm asking for." Sam expected to be shouted at, to be told that the last couple of weeks were only because he had been hurt. But what John really did surprised him.
He was gathered into strong arms and pulled against a hard chest, and soothing, yet rough words were whispered to him. "You've got a deal Sammy." The arms let him go and he pulled back and was greeted by his father grinning at him.
"Really?" He couldn't help but ask.
"Really son." John assured him and Sam found himself smiling, he glanced at Dean who was also smiling.
"Hey dad, why don't you come with us to the bar?" Dean asked after a few moments of the Winchesters smiling affectionately at each other. "Or should we stay and see if we can grow lady parts?" And like that the old Dean was back, and Sam sighed in relief of having his brother back.
"Nah, you two go, but watch out for each other. Besides, you don't want your old man slowing you down." John replied
"Don't worry dad, you could no doubt drink Sammy under the table." Dean returned, smirking.
"Yeah I bet I can drink you under the table as well Dean." John quipped.
"Oh yeah, it's on." Sam and John groaned realizing Dean probably wasn't going to stop drinking until he's proved John wrong.
All three Winchesters left for the bar together. Finally a family after years of letting bad feelings between them come above what was really important. Keeping each other safe.
