There is no pain so great as the memory of joy in present grief. Tears are the silent language of grief. Happiness is beneficial for the body, but it is grief that develops the powers of the mind. There is no grief like the grief that does not speak.
A hospital stretcher was taken down the hallway as inside was one of the patients, a boy. He was sent here after something had happened. It was almost as if fate had decided to strike down on him. All he could remember was heading out to the park to speak to his friend.
"It was nice that you came out here to see me." She began.
"Yes I wanted to see you after what had happened." He began. "My life is in shambles, my father had died just recently and my mother can't take the grief, she has turned to drugs to cope with the pain."
"I know you've had it rough for the past few days and by the looks of it, you're only getting worse as time goes on." She replied. The boy's gaze looks down as if his life has fallen apart. He didn't know what to say next.
"I don't know how long I could keep dragging my feet onward for." He replied. He didn't know what to say next to his friend but he trusted her to be by his side.
"Me either but I can't deal with your condition getting worse. I'll bring this up and we can try getting you some therapy." She replied. She was indeed right but it was possible he was deteriorating much faster than she could have expected him to turn out. He didn't know what to say next.
"I don't know if I am willing to give it a shot. But…" He paused, something wasn't right about himself. He placed one of his hands on his chest and continued to speak. "...I'm willing to take anything at this point if it means trying to recover over this loss."
"Are you okay?" She asked him, she thought something was off but he continued to speak.
"I'm… fine…" He spoke, he was trying his best to smile but he was starting to shake, his forehead began to sweat and his smile faded away quickly.
"I hope so as I don't want someone to expose their weakness with me." She replied. He nodded but it was as if his neck began to get stiff.
"I'm not… weak…" He tried speaking again but his voice sounded hoarse, it was as if he had something stuck in his throat near his voice box. "I'm willing to keep going if you are." He was becoming more and more pale as his body was at its breaking point. He tried to reach up to clear out his throat but his arms began to spike intense pain through his arms, his arms quickly went limp but he tried his best to push onward.
"I am but..." She told him.
"What?" He asked with his voice finally fading away, he felt his chest stop beating as his eyes grew dull, then they shot open as if his body was screaming for air, it was hurting him so much as if his body was underwater, he struggled to breathe while his eyes finally closed. He fell forward onto his knees which had their power grid cut off and were numb, within moments, he fell forward, laying back up on the ground as the entire world to him had faded to black. The girl ran up to him as she was scared for his life. She rolled his body over and began to shake him.
"Lenny?!" She shouted again as she shook him again, trying to get him to wake up. "Lenny, speak to me!" Her eyes began to water almost if she was drowning in her own tears. For the poor boy, there was no going back.
Three Months Later
Being stuck in the hospital ward for a long time seemed to be unnerving, the twelve weeks he had been there, he was left with nothing but his thoughts, when his mother found out that he had suffered a heart attack, she had been shattered and turned to her supply of drugs more than ever. She never visited her son that much after a few weeks or so and only came every couple of weeks or so, but they never really talked much. He just laid in his bed and slept for most of the time as it was the only source of comfort to him, whenever he did wake up for an hour or two a day, it was mostly to read. He kept two books on him as it was the only two, he seemed to really like. His eyes opened as he looked down to where his chest was, a large, jagged scar that hadn't fully healed was there along with a few smaller ones surrounding it. He looked up before he placed his head back down and began to doze off.
The gifts and visitors had seemed to dwindle down to nothing after a few short days when they found out his recovery wasn't going to be a quick one. After what they had gathered, was the fact that he had suffered from an arrhythmia, something that they didn't discover until recently when he was taken in twelve weeks ago, it came on suddenly and struck him quickly. He didn't know if he was going to see his home again or his friends and family. Even his mother was willing to sell her house to see if there was something to ease his suffering, but nothing came out of it.
Even the doctors and nurses he received were in a state of agitation, they had a million other patients to get to. He often asked if they had a moment with him and when they did, he would often ask when he was going to get out of this place, the doctors said they weren't sure, but they wanted to see how the treatments and surgeries were going if they were to cure his debilitating state.
Being stuck there for weeks on end, he seemed to have lost track of time. He would open his eyes one day and then close them, when he would open them again, a day went by without any pausing so trying to figure out what day it was only turned it into mush. He decided that it was not best to think about it and just let the doctors do what they needed in order to ease him through the days going forward.
When the thirteenth week had come, the boy began to see some improvement, he wasn't as tired, and he began to seem livelier as the doctors were scaling back some of the treatment. He sat up to see what there was to do when one of the doctors came in with some information for the boy. He was carrying a chart with the boy's information on it while he had some news for him.
Name: Lenny Hirahi
Age: 18
DOB: 5/16
Gender: Male
Height: 5'5
Weight: 52 Kg (114 lbs)
Blood type: B
Hair color: Blonde
Eye color: Blue
Diagnosis: Arrhythmia and Broken Heart Syndrome
Other: Pulse/Heart Monitor (Color: Red) (Code Number: 8926)
"How are you feeling today, Lenny?" The doctor asked him. Lenny stirred from his bed while he was trying to figure out what to say.
"G… good." Lenny stuttered a bit as he tried to get his bearings around. The doctor nodded.
"I'm more than happy to hear you're doing okay. We thought your broken heart syndrome was going to clear up in a few weeks after the heart attack occurred, but the arrhythmia only aggravated it and made the condition nearly fatal. We had to cut you open a few times during the two surgeries to make sure your heart was beating normally. The loss of your father brought on the sudden attack, and we nearly lost you from it. I'm glad to hear that you're beginning to get over it." He began listing the information that they did know from the case that had happened. "You seem to get your Arrhythmia worse than other people as you can't handle physical or emotional stress as easily as other people."
"I see." Lenny replied to the doctor while he was hanging the chart up, he began wiping away the whiteboard and began speaking again.
"So, me and my colleagues were thinking about sending you to another school seeing that you missed out on a lot of it. One that suits your needs better. We've chatted with representatives from various schools for the past several days to see what would work best for you, the requirement is to be stress free, so we don't encounter another incident like this one and we want you to make friends. Even your classes and workload like homework and tests were going to be very limited as we just want you to have friends so we don't have to hospitalize you again Lenny and you could be treated at the school." He told Lenny about the choices and the requirements they were laying out so that another incident didn't happen again. "We told one of the nurses about your pulse monitor attached to your wrist, if it's flashing slowly, it is completely normal, if it's in rhythm, beating a few times a second in an even beat, then you're working out, if it's rapidly flashing then another heart attack will occur. The flashing will determine how bad it would be." Lenny looked at the wristband where the monitor was on. It was a device to track his heart to make sure it was okay. The light flashed slowly, Lenny was relaxed and there was nothing wrong.
"So which school am I transferring to?" Lenny asked the doctor while he continued to write the message on the white board.
"Based on the information we've gathered and the representatives that we met, it would be best to have you transferred to Yamaku Academy." The doctor began. "It's a school for the physically disabled and the best candidate for a person such as yourself. However, what is required of you is to keep a diary of your daily activities and the pulse monitor has to stay on your wrist at all times, even in the shower as it's waterproof. It is a way to record your heart and determine the severity of the next attack. Another thing we agreed on is that your education load is reduced significantly so you could have more time to make friends and enjoy yourself."
"I don't know if I'm keen on making new friends, what about the ones that I had?" Lenny asked why he needed a whole new set of friends, what was wrong with the friends he used to have.
"We told your friends that you were dead but that was moreover an excuse, so you didn't have to think about them as much. Your new friends will be the light to guide you going forward from this point onward. A new beginning is going to begin for you, mister Hirahi." The doctor finished writing on the whiteboard and got away from him. It said: We hope you enjoyed your stay; you will be discharged tomorrow morning.
"Leaving? Already? I'm not even prepared for school if I'm leaving tomorrow?" Lenny told his doctor that he had no way to get himself ready if he was going out the door.
"Don't worry Lenny, we made the decision a couple days in advance, we got you prepared with a few books and a couple of pens. I hope you like your visit here as you will be placed into a whole new world tomorrow." Lenny froze, he didn't know what to expect in a land so alien to him.
"Will I have to take any medication for my heart to keep it steady?" Lenny asked if there were going to be any pills he would need to take if he was to keep his heart in check.
"We're going to prescribe you some Beta Blockers to keep your blood pressure down while you settle into the school." The doctor replied. Lenny nodded while a nurse came in with a school bag with a few books and a couple of pens. There were other features inside like a water container for drinking and a small pouch for his medication.
"Well… thanks." Lenny replied.
"No problem, the school you're in is only a few minutes away from here so you don't have to go far. If there's anything wrong, just call emergency services and we'll get you here as fast as we can." The doctor told Lenny that he had nothing to worry about for the time being. Lenny sighed happily before he began speaking again.
"What about the two books I've been reading? What will happen to them?" Lenny asked.
"You can keep them; they were a personal gift from the doctor when you told him you liked science fiction stories. He was only able to get the first two books." The nurse told Lenny about the books he was going to keep.
"I'm barely through the first one so when I get the chance, I'll start reading again." Lenny told the nurse while he packed his bags. The doctor was busy unhooking Lenny from the medical machines that helped stabilize him, but the pulse monitor was going to stay with him at all times.
"I wish you luck for the road ahead. Make it your best that you have ever walked down on." The doctor told Lenny when he finished unhooking the machines from him.
"Looks like I will be sleeping easy tonight?" Lenny asked as if he was finally free from the machines that had restrained him to his hospital bed.
"Certainly, but you need to get ready to walk tomorrow morning as you'll be getting up early for school." The doctor told Lenny while he tucked him in. This doctor was like a second father to Lenny, and he had got to know him for the three months he was stuck in his ward. Lenny rested his head on the pillow while the doctors kept his stuff on a coat hanger, they were going to check on him tomorrow morning.
The next morning would come as Lenny was woken up at six. The nurse gave him a simple breakfast of eggs and potatoes with some juice to wash it down. She also placed the blocker tablet on the plate to be taken with his breakfast.
"Your propranolol blockers, you will be taking twenty-five milligram tablets twice a day. This will help ease you through your time at Yamaku High School. We will be in contact with your nurse as you will be checking in with him to see if your heart is holding out." The nurse instructed Lenny to be taking his medicine to help him out. Lenny popped the tablet into his mouth while washing it down with the juice that remained. The nurse placed the rest of the tablets into a capsule and into his bag. He was going to have them with him when he gets transferred. Lenny got up but his legs felt wobbly as he hadn't walked in months. He stumbled around, looking for his bag he was going to use to take with him to school. He then grabbed it while the doctor was keeping him steady on his feet. Lenny placed the bag around his arms while he was getting his bearings with his feet. After a couple or so minutes, Lenny found his balance and began to walk around, he was heading out of the hospital and to the station where he was going to be escorted to the school. After the short walk. They approached the station while the doctor turned and began speaking to Lenny.
"Good luck on your first day. If anything happens to you, your nurse will tell us at the end of the week." The doctor wished Lenny some luck and he was going to receive the information from his caretaker when the week was over.
"See you later." Lenny told the doctor. The doctor and the nurse walked away as Lenny was left to his own devices, the commuter train pulled up as the doors opened, the passengers got off first, after the passengers that departed for this station, the new passengers began to board. Among them was Lenny. He decided to take the seat closest to the door so when they did arrive at the next station, he could get off of it. Sitting there by himself, he watched as the doors closed and the commuter train began to roll along the track to the next station. It was easier for him to do this as it was fifteen minutes between both locations if you drove and up to a half hour if he had walked. Lenny was finally free from the hospital, but he didn't know what the first day was going to bring him. Within a couple of minutes, the commuter train stopped, and the doors opened. Lenny got up and began to walk out onto the platform and began making his way to the school.
"Well, it's my first day, I might as well see what I can make of it." Lenny told himself. He continued to walk along and follow the arrows to Yamaku Academy. He looked down to his pulse monitor, which was beeping steadily, he tried to remain calm in case the beeping unexpectedly spiked.
Lenny arrived at the front gates, the gates seem to be full of grandeur but to Lenny, they seem to be inviting a new life ahead. He didn't know who was setting up his dorm, but it certainly wasn't his mother. Lenny looked at the building ahead, red bricks, black wrought iron and gray plaster didn't seem to be welcoming at first, but Lenny didn't think much of it. He needed to get a uniform that would suit his needs and get to know his bearings around in this unfamiliar place. He walked inside as if he bidding farewell to the gates.
Making his way inside of the school grounds, Lenny looked around to see the grounds were lush and green with plenty of buildings around him. This was a bit much for Lenny but it was something new for him especially getting stuck in the hospital for months without seeing anything new was a breath of fresh air to him, At least the grounds were clean which was a nice bonus for him. He then made his way to the main building, taking in the sight around him. It seemed a little daunting, but Lenny hoped that the people inside were inviting. Lenny made his way inside of the building.
Inside the building, there were many students and staff that were up and about, Lenny had arrived at seven in the morning. It was rush hour for the school and classes weren't going to start for another half hour or so. Lenny made his way to the front desk where one of the adults was waiting for him.
"You must be… Hi… Ha…?" The person at the front desk tried to get his last name correct.
"Hirahi." Lenny told him. The man at the front desk nodded as he learned the name.
"Nice to meet you, your doctor told me all about you. You seem to be not in the school uniform, but we definitely have some spares for you. I'm Mutou, the science teacher and your homeroom teacher. And who might you be, mister Hirahi?" Mutou introduced himself as one of Lenny's teachers.
"Lenny." Lenny said his name to Mutou.
"Nice to meet you Lenny, I got a spare uniform for you, and I wanted to see if it was to fit you before we let you off to class." Mutou was gracious to Lenny; he decided to lead him away while keeping tabs with the new student. Lenny followed Mutou before they got to a changing room where one of the uniforms was waiting for him. "These uniforms are custom made and could be preferred to anyone's needs. I want to see what it would look like on you." Mutou would hand Lenny the uniform that had been neatly packaged away. Lenny gently opened the uniform package to reveal a green overcoat, a white button down shirt with green pants, black shoes and a black tie. He then went into the changing room to see which combination fits him the best. He decided to ditch the old clothes he had from the hospital and began putting on the new clothes. After a minute of experimentation, Lenny stepped out of the changing room.
"I bet this would be for you." Lenny began. Lenny had decided to go with the white button down shirt, the pants and the shoes, he wasn't fond of the green overcoat and decided to keep the tie. "I will keep the tie but only put it on for ceremonial purposes as wearing a tie everyday seems awkward at best."
"That's great to hear, everyone has their preferences." Mutou replied to Lenny's request. Lenny then stuffed the tie into his pocket so that he was going to hang it up somewhere in his dorm. Now they needed to get to know each other more while they were walking to their classes. Lenny picked up the bag he had and began to walk with Mutou. "So, what caused you to come here in the first place?" Mutou asked Lenny if he had a reason why he came to Yamaku Academy.
"I had a heart attack which left me confined to my bed for months. I wanted to talk about my emotions, but I didn't get the chance to. It was almost as if something wasn't right and I kept stuttering, then it crept up on me and slapped me across the face and I just collapsed like that. Then everything was dark, there were no stars to act as the guide, no moon as the light. Everything went black." Lenny explained to Mutou what happened on that fateful day. Mutou nodded and began to speak.
"So, you suffered something similar to Hisao Nakai when I first met him. Can you unbutton your shirt so I can see what the doctors did to you?" Mutou asked Lenny. Lenny paused as he began to think, he didn't feel comfortable with revealing his scars to anyone. Mutou was asking for something from him, and he was unable to give an inch as he wasn't ready. He began to sweat as the pulse monitor began to flash slightly faster. He had to make a decision.
"I'm not ready for that yet, I just came here." Lenny replied. He decided to wait for what Mutou had to say about this.
"That's fine, I think it's normal for someone here to not show their true colors on the first day of being here." Mutou replied. Lenny breathed a sigh of relief as he had calmed down. The pulse monitor began flashing normally. Mutou looked down to see the red wrist watch-like device attached to Lenny's wrist. "What's that you have on your left wrist?"
"That's my pulse monitor, it takes my heart beat and the light that flashes is a reflection of that. I have to pay attention to it." Lenny replied.
"So, do you need it?" Mutou asked Lenny if he needed the monitor on his wrist.
"Yes, it is ordered by the doctor that I have to have it on my wrist at all times. And if I don't it would be hard to determine what is going to happen to me." Lenny told Mutou why he needed this device on his wrist. "My doctor also said my class load is reduced so I have to learn to make more friends so more of these heart attacks don't happen."
"There's plenty to choose from. Go out there and see who you can talk to." Mutou gave Lenny some courage to be social. Lenny walked forward as he had Mutou watching him.
Lenny tried walking along the school hallway as many of the students were chatting away before their classes were to begin. Lenny tried his best, but he seemed anxious around all of these unfamiliar students, he began to nervously sweat as two girls turned and began to look at him. Lenny also began to shake a bit as it was snowballing down. The pulse monitor was behaving erratically, and Lenny felt something was coming. He placed his hand on his chest while trying his best to keep himself calm. The students looked at him wondering if there was something wrong with him, but the pulse monitor was flashing ever so faster. But for Lenny this was too much for him. Without any sense of guidance or direction, Lenny unexpectedly collapsed onto the floor landing back up to the ceiling. Mutou looked at this as he noticed Lenny was on the ground.
"Lenny!" Mutou shouted, he ran over and tried to figure out if the new student was okay. Lenny laid there not responding.
Lenny woke up a couple of hours later in the nurse's office as his pulse monitor was flashing normally, it was still going as it was a good indication that he was breathing. He leaned up and tried to figure out where he was.
"Where am I?" Lenny asked. The school nurse looked at him and began to walk over.
"You're in my office my friend, we found out that you fainted on the first day, fortunately it wasn't anything severe, and we decided to let you ride it out." The School nurse responded. He walked over to check on him. "You most likely had an anxiety attack on your first day." He told Lenny.
"So, am I feeling better?" Lenny asked him. The School Nurse began to think about it while he examined Lenny's scarred chest.
"Yeah, you are. For a second we got scared that you had another sudden heart attack." The School Nurse told Lenny. Then two more students entered, one looked like she was in her track team uniform, the second student was in a uniform similar to Lenny's though he had the tie and Lenny did not. "Ah. Hisao, I've seen you've taken Emi in for her check up, I want to examine Emi below the knees."
"Those little stubs?" Emi asked, trying to be playful with the school nurse. He laughed while she took off her prosthetic legs. He began to examine Emi's stubs to make sure they were in good order.
"They're in good health, I say you should go back out there and continue to run." The School Nurse told them.
"Well at least we have someone who is in good order." Hisao told him and Emi began to giggle. Hisao turned to see another student lying on the cot who appeared to be all scarred up. He looked like he was getting up. "Who is he?" Hisao asked.
"That's the new student Lenny Hirahi." The School Nurse replied.
[A/N]: Cutting this off here as this chapter is mostly an introduction of Lenny's Character and the beginning of his adventure at Yakamu Academy.
Please note, I haven't played Katawa Shoujo and just making up some weird adventure with an original character, if there are any references within the story that should be posted into the reviews, do it, I want to turn this into a side hobby, but I don't know how popular this is going to get.
This is also going to reflect the decisions of all of the characters if Hisao gets the good ending for Hanako as the events of this story are taking place after Hanako and Hisao confess to each other. So, expect Emi to be getting someone special in this fanfic.
