Chapter 7

Normal POV

"This is a stupid idea. It will never work" whispered Max.

"It's our only way of getting him there" Tyson whispered back.

"I agree with Max. I feel ridiculous" murmured Ray.

The three teen were currently standing outside of Kai's bedroom. It was early morning, and Kai had still not woken. Which Ray said was expected because he thought he had heard their captain talking on the phone for most of the night was probably exhausted.

They had locked the front door and the key was currently in the seam of Tyson's cap. Max had locked all other bedrooms and bathroom and closed all windows. Ray had hidden the car keys as well in a place Kai would never have thought to look. They also each held a great big pillow in front of each other as protection. Tyson even held a wooden spoon, Max wondered what he thought he was going to accomplish with it.

The three had decided that they were going to town to see the Hiwatari's for the day they had planned for Kai. They were going to force Kai, come hell or high water Kai was going with.

Ray had found the spare keys to all of the bedrooms in a drawer and unlocked Kai's bedroom door.

Max pushed the door open with his foot and they stepped in apprehensively, tip toeing as they did so.

The three stood by the side that Kai slept at. Tyson, using the wooden spoon began to prod him with it. Kai's eyes flickered open and he swallowed.

Sitting the teen scratched his head and looked at his team mates in confusion.

"What are you doing?" he asked, his voice groggy from just waking, though he must admit he was irritated to being woken up he was more intrigued in their…pillows?

The three stood in silence, shifting their weight; they had expected him to be angry and had not actually thought to far into the plan.

"Well? If no one is going to tell me what is going on then I'm going to the bathroom" Kai said as he moved to get up.

"You can't" said Max, finding his voice

"Why?"

"I locked it and hid the key"

Kai cocked his head to one side.

"What exactly is going on? You can't just lock bathrooms. I will use the one downstairs then"

"I locked that one too"

Kai frowned.

"We locked all the bedrooms too. And the front door, we also hid all the keys" said Tyson.

Kai glanced at Ray who had yet to say anything.

"Is there something I should know? You're acting…stranger than usual".

"We...we're kidnapping you" said Ray

Kai's frown deepened…kidnapping him…was he still sleeping?

"We are going to town to see your family whether you like it or not. They arranged a day for us and we intend on going. And you're going with Kai…it's for your benefit anyway".

Nope not dreaming, his family was never in his dreams.

"What exactly do you plan and using those pillows for?" he asked instead.

"Defense" said Max

"Defense against what? Me? Whose bright idea was that?"

Tyson shifted his feet again.

"Mine. Now get dressed. We don't have all day" he said, poking Kai in his ribs with the wooden spoon.

Kai grabbed hold of the spoon and said, "I will go with you. But if you poke me with that thing one more time Tyson I swear you will need more than that pillow to help you".

Max POV

The drive there was certainly awkward enough. I sat at the back, with Tyson while Ray and Kai sat up front with Ray driving. Ray hasn't quite mastered it like Kai and is still trying to get his license but a learner is better than nothing I suppose.

Ray once told me how nervous he gets when he is driving with Kai, who has his license. I asked why he was nervous; only to find out that Kai didn't say a word the whole way. I guess having someone not comment or correct you could be nerve wrecking.

We drove into town, which was small to say the least. It was a one road town with shops all around and streets that lead up to the mountains where most residents lived. An ice rink seemed to be the centre of it all which also was opposite the holiday inn Kai's father was staying in. Parked outside of the Inn we clambered out, the wind was icy and nipped at my nose. It had been lightly snowing but now it looked it had finally settled.

Kai's father and step-mother, Sylvia, must have seen us pull up because they were out as soon as he locked the car up.

Sylvia was dressed rather causally, jeans, boots and the fanciest parka I have ever seen with faux fur all around, well I hoped it was fake. Kai's father, Nikolai had also donned a more every day look but some pants and what resembled mountain climbing boots, a huge jacket and a scarf.

We all had dressed warmly, well except Kai who dressed light whatever the weather. His scarf though was wrapped multiple times around his neck and resembled a cowl of some sort.

"Good morning BladeBreakers" called Sylvia as she smiled and hugged each of us, when she came to Kai she wrapped her arms around the statue who simply averted his gaze from everyone else's.

Nikolai shook our hands and welcomed us. When he took Kai's hand the two simply stared at each for a moment, Kai mumbled something under his breath and Nikolai who smiled in the corner of his mouth and then let go of his son's hand.

We were ushered into the Inn and quickly sat down at a large wooden table which had mugs of coffee and warm breakfast goods reader for consuming.

"I thought we would start with a hearty breakfast. And then we could take a walk around and see the shops and then go ice-skating. How does that sound?"

I didn't understand why Nikolai would have Kai go ice skating, I would think Kai was traumatized to even go on the ice. I glanced at Kai but he seemed to be staring into his coffee mug frowning. He seemed as confused as I was.

"Why not just go ice-skating now. We can walk around town later" said Kai finally.

Nikolai smiled and clapped his hands, "Yes that is a good idea"

Ray POV

Russian's must have an ice skating gene that the rest of us are missing.

I came to this conclusion after watching Sylvia and Nikolai for 5 minutes whiz around the rink like pro's. Tyson and Max also stood watching, Tyson clung to the wall while Max would waver slightly every so often as they moved around the rink.

Growing up in the mountains of China, I was not new to deep snow and I knew that the others also had some experience though this rink was more of an old pond and so wasn't as kept as what the others were used to.

I saw Mr. Dickinson sitting at the benches were you could eat; he was drinking a huge cup of something hot and steaming.

I looked around for Kai but could not see him; I started to feel anxious and scared for what he could be up to when a flash of white scarf rushed past me as I stood on the ice.

I had assumed that he would merely be too traumatized to ice skate or to even be near the ice rink. But I watched him; he was like water as he sailed over the ice. I hear Nikolai shout something at him in Russian but Kai merely moved faster and faster until he suddenly stopped.

I watched as he moved off of the rink, I noticed sweat beading his forehead which he wiped away. He adjusted his scarf and moved to return his skates to the hiring station.

I saw as Nikolai now also had followed Kai and the two sat on the same bench as they removed their ice skates.

Nikolai was speaking to Kai and even though I was out of earshot I knew I wouldn't be able to understand them. Kai didn't respond to whatever Nikolai was saying. This didn't seem to deter Nikolai as he continued to talk.

"You know it's considered rude to stare" I heard a voice behind me, turning I noticed Sylvia standing there.

"I uh um"

Sylvia smiled, her teeth shone white and he eyes sparkled with too much make up, "Don't worry. Niko has been threatening to have this talk for a long time. He just has a lot on his chest".

"I don't think Kai wants to talk" I said glancing back at the father and son. I could see the resemblance, it was strong. Though there was something softer about Kai, something Nikolai seemed to be missing.

"No well, the apple doesn't fall from the tree".

"He seems to talk to you freely" I noted.

"I am his wife. He's obligated to speak to me. Making up for the first I assume".

"Uh did you know her? Kai's mother?"

We were skating together now and talking, slowly moving around the rink.

"No, I never had the pleasure of meeting her".

And with that Sylvia merely whisked herself away.

I then realized that I was the only one left on the rink and the others were at Mr. Dickinson's bench chatting away. Kai wasn't there though. Sweeping my gaze over the vendors at the ice rink I spotted him paying for a beverage.

Moving off the rink I 'walked' though it was more of a waddle to him. Standing in my ice skates as I a bit taller than Kai as he stood waiting for his drink.

"You want something Kon" He said as I approached.

"Maybe I wanted a drink"

Kai raised an eyebrow.

"What did you order?" I asked, forcing the conversation to continue.

"Tea"

"What kind?"

"Mint"

"I didn't know you liked mint tea"

Kai didn't respond and received his tea from the vendor who then turned his attention to me waiting for my order.

"Uh I'll have the same, mint tea"

I glanced at Kai who was taking a small sip; I watched his shoulders slumped a bit forward, his body relaxing.

"I saw you talking to your father. Did he have a lot to say?"

Kai shrugged, "Usual crap"

"Usual? You mean you've done this before? Him coming to see you, trying to reconnect and all. When Voltaire was alive"

There was no answer as Kai stared down into his Styrofoam cup.

"Kai?"

There was no answer.

I reached and touched his upper arm saying his name again.

Kai looked up at me, I noticed how his eyes were glazed over and he looked at me so innocently, it was as if I was staring into the eyes of a child.

"He wants me to sign him as the owner of Biovolt and all known affiliates".

"Why don't you? I thought you hated that stuff. What Voltaire had left you"?

Kai moved his arm out of my grasp.

"There's a reason Voltaire blocked him out", taking another sip Kai walked back to the others ad my own mint tea was ready. As I was handed my own cup I couldn't remember if I had seen Kai put milk and sugar in his the way he liked his hot chocolate.
