"Welcome to the Union!" Wendy declared as we walked through the door. I'm pretty sure I was gawking at the rangers, operators, and mechanics that bustled through the huge building.
"Hey, Eleanor!" someone called my name, and I turned towards a chubby, chestnut haired male running towards us. "Hey, remember me?" I blinked.
"Sorry, drawing a blank." I said, looking him over again.
"C'mon, you've gotta remember." I tilted my head to the side. "I was with Summer and Ben? Drove the Union to Oblivia? Wait, I know, you know me by my ranger pose!" he performed a, well... less than spectacular pose, and looked up at me again. "Well?"
"Are you a ranger?" I questioned, still drawing a blank on this guys identity.
"Was a ranger. In Fiorre with Solona and Lunick, but got transferred and now I'm PR representative of the Ranger Union!" he declared this proudly. When I said nothing, he facepalmed. "My name rhymes with 'Smurf'."
"Smurf, Smurf... oh, Murph!" the name came to me suddenly, and I smiled, and reached out my hand. "It's been awhile."
"See, now you remember!" he said, taking my hand in a hearty handshake.
"Yeah, you were the guy who ate all the funnel cake at the Rainbow Festival." Murphs face reddened slightly, but shook his head, regaining his composure.
"Yep, that was me." he turned towards Sven and Wendy. "I'll take 'em from here, you guys can go and report to Prof. Hastings and Chairperson Erma." Sven and Wendy gave him a nod of acknowledgement, and they headed up an escalator. Murph turned back towards the ten of us. "Well this is a first, ten new top rangers all at once, now the biggest recruit since the Terrible Trio!"
"Terrible Trio?" Surge asked, blinking.
"Yeah, Kate, Keith, and Kellyn." he blinked. "I suppose Rhythmi would count too... but she's an Operator, not a Ranger. And as far as Chairperson Erma has told us," he glanced at our ranger uniforms, putting a cheery smile on his face. "None of you are Operators or Mechanics!"
"Well, obviously." Dusk said, shaking his head.
"Anyways, I'm here to give you the entire tour of the Ranger Union, along with introducing you to all our rangers, operators and mechanics. As you can see," he turned around and waved his arm flamboyantly around the room. "This is where we allow tourists, townsfolk, and city dwellers to look around. The upper floors are off limits to everyone but the members of the Union, though." he grinned, and continued onto the second floor. The ten of us followed him. "This floor was attacked by Team Dim Sun about a year ago. It was recently repaired, and is now the dorm rooms and basically the lounge area for employees." We continued onto the third floor. "This is the cafeteria. They serve amazing burgers here." We went onto the fourth floor, where we saw some teenagers who where perhaps a year or two older than us.
"Hey Murph!" the redheaded, spiky-haired teen said. He looked at us, and put on mischievous smile. "So these are the amazing ranger kids who busted out of that ship." he gave us a thumbs up. "Good job." the girl smiled and the boy waved.
"This is the terrible trio, Kate, her twin brother, Kellyn, and Keith." Murph said. He turned towards blond girl in an operators uniform. "Rhythmi, one of our operators. And finally, Isaac," he patted the shoulder of a blond boy with a mushroom haircut. "He's a kid genius, and is, in fact, director of the scientific section of the Ranger Union when Prof. Hastings isn't around."
"Hey," Isaac said with a smile. Placing his hands in his pockets, he turned towards Surge. "Surge. How are you?"
"Great on this end, Mushroom Head."
"Are we still on that joke? Fine then, Sparkles." I blinked, and laughed behind my hand while the guys and Flare roared with laughter. Wynter let out a giggle with Dawn, who tried to hide it behind a cough. Dusk just rolled his eyes.
"Wait, you two know each other?" Rhythmi asked, her pointed finger moving from Isaac to Surge.
"Sure, we were childhood friends." Isaac shrugged. "We both came from Olivine City."
"I caught some guys trying to beat him up, so I decided to defend him. Then we started talking it up about electronics, and boom, we were friends." Surge smirked. "I was notorious for short-circuiting the lighthouse, and he was famous for fixing it back up!" Surge turned back towards Isaac.
"Anyways, sorry to tear you guys from the happy reunion, but we've got to keep up with the tour." Murph interrupted after an awkward cough. "We won't want to keep Erma or Prof. Hastings waiting!"
The fifth floor was that of the research labs and a meeting room with an awesome floor that was a screen. The sixth floor was where the operators worked, a huge map of Almia on the screen. Finally, the seventh and final floor was like a huge garden. A large tree was off to the side, and literally seemed to emit the energy of life. I glanced at Forrest, and he seemed mesmerized.
"And this is the sixth floor, where the Tree of Life has grown strong since the Union had opened." Murph said with a great flourish of his arm. There was a small silence. "Well, that's it." Murph shrugged. "Prof. Hastings and Chairperson Erma will be up here soon, so you can just wait here for a moment or two. Prof. Hastings has been looking into that wacky rock that you guys sent us, and I wouldn't be surprised if Erma was dragging him up by the ear." He exited down the escalators, all of us either to flabbergasted to speak or to focused on the huge tree in front of us.
"They say," Forrest said, still amazed by the famous tree. "That this tree was planted here on the land by Angels themselves, but had to be cut down when they decided to build the Union. That didn't stop the tree, though, because the day after the Union was completed with five floors, and sixth one suddenly appeared, and the Tree of Life grew on the top ever since."
"You can't doubt the fact that this thing has some strange connection, though." Dash said, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Do you think it really was planted by one of our ancestors?"
"Perhaps." Dawn said, laying her hand on the tree. "Imagine if the Tree of Life could talk, though. What stories would it tell?"
"I'm sure Forrest can tell you!" Flare said, smacking the Nature Angel on the back. We all chuckled, knowing that the pacifist probably could tell us. Our conversation was cut short, however when two elderly people entered the room. It didn't take much for the ten, newly appointed top rangers to realize that these two were Prof. Hastings and Chairperson Erma.
"Ah, our newest rangers!" Erma said happily. "May I be the first to say welcome! We are happy to have you here, joining us in our cause to keep the world at peace."
"As you know," Prof. Hastings said, stepping forward. "There are only fifteen Top Rangers in the world, but with you in the Union, the number has increased to twenty-five. I hope that you realize and understand the responsibility that comes with this position." we all nodded, waiting for him to continue. "We shall pair you with partners based on who you did best with in Ranger School. We did, in fact, get the information from Ms. April and Mr. Kincaid. It's a shame, though," he sighed, and shook his head. "Such great teaching talent going to waste." We all glanced at each other knowing that, from what Dawn told us, that Kincaid had worked for Dim Sun before this. No one remembers, though.
"Anyways," Erma said, clapping her hands together. "These are your partners. You will be paired up to go on missions together, as well as sharing a dorm room together."
"And we hope that you can be mature when paired with the opposite gender." Prof. Hastings warned, while slamming his cane into the ground. Carter seemed to wince, as if remembering the beatings he got from Mr. Woodward.
"Wynter and Surge," Erma began, reading off the list. "Dawn and Dusk, Forrest and Flare, Dash and Aqua, and finally, Eleanor and Carter."
I glanced at Carter. I personally didn't have a problem with rooming with him. My friends, however, were having completely different reactions. Dawn and Dusk glanced at each other, blushed, and looked away. Yes, Dusk was blushing. Forrest seemed to be having the same reaction, and Flare just turned her head away, giving him warnings not to try anything. I think we all knew he wasn't going to do anything wrong or inappropriate, but I suppose she had to keep her tough girl act up. Wynter turned completely red to the face, and Surge seemed to be a little distracted by Aquas reaction. She let out a girl squeal, and launched herself at Dash, engulfing him in a hug. Dash turned beat red at the contact, and struggled to keep his balance.
I rolled my eyes, and nudged Carter with my elbow. He looked at me, and shrugged.

It was a few days into our new top ranger position was when I decided.
I was going to tell Isaac about the wings.
I tried to run the idea by everyone else first, but the minute I uttered the words, I was shot down by Dusk, who promptly continued to give his reasons for why I shouldn't. Everyone else agreed, except Wynter. She said nothing during the whole thing, thinking intently.
But at this point, I could care less what everyone else thought. I could tell that everyone was starting to experience the dark flashes, and they all knew it too. Just the other day, Dash nearly beat down some scientist who bumped into him on the hallway. Aqua thankfully talked some sense into him, and explained that he was cranky because he was short on sleep.
But it wasn't just that, the signs were beginning to get noticeable. Our eyes suddenly turning completely black, panting from out of nowhere, power surges that couldn't be controlled, and things were only escalating. If it kept up for much longer, it wouldn't take long for someone like Prof. Hastings, who had been researching the kidnappings and experiments since they happened, to put two and two together and figure us out. Besides, Isaac was smarter than anyone I've ever known before. If he could tell us what's wrong and come up with some sort of antidote to cure it.
Slowly, I crept out of bed, and began to slip on some casual clothing. I made my way towards the door, but froze when I heard a soft whisper.
"Surge?" Wynter asked as she rubbed at her eyes. I glanced over my shoulder nervously. Maybe she won't notice...? "Why are you dressed? It's nearly midnight."
"I, um, was going for a short flight?" I said nervously. Arceus, why couldn't I lie to her?
"Surge, what are you planning?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I, um, was going to see Isaac." I finally broke down. Who could stand such an innocent look from such a sweet girl?
"Why? Where you going to...?" she trailed off, looking down.
"I need to." I said. "The signs are getting more obvious by the day, and what are we going to do if one of us goes all dark on someone in front of the whole Union, or while we're in the middle of a city. All ten of us are experiencing it, Wynter. If Isaac can figure out what's wrong, then maybe he can find a way to fix it." Wynter looked up at me.
"If you're going to do something... Then I think I should help you out." She got out of bed, her feet touching the floor as she stretched. "We're partners, right?" I said nothing as she began to re-braid her hair. "Just wait outside for me."
I nodded, and slipped out the door. After a moment, Wynter emerged, also dressed in casual clothing. We made our way up the escalators, finding a light still on in one of the labs, pushing it open, we found Isaac glancing at something through a microscope, before looking away, and taking notes.
"Isaac," I said. He shot up, nearly falling out of his chair from shock.
"My Arceus," he said, placing a hand over his heart. "Give me a warning next time."
"Sorry." I shrugged.
"No one ever comes here at this hour." Isaac said, turning back to his microscope, and adjusting it.
"Then why are you here?" Wynter asked. Isaac got up, and gestured over to the microscope.
"Research. It's been a mystery as of what happens to a regular pokémon to a 'shiny' pokémon. There are thousands of mythes and legends, but the closest thing to a theory is that their diet or habitat is different than others. But from field study," Isaac flipped through his notes, showing thousands of theories, numbers, graphs, and charts. I think I even saw a pie chart somewhere in there. "Shiny or not, most pokémon stick with their pack, flock, or school, considering if they are a bird, land based, or sea based. Their diets are mostly the same, and now I'm studying some blood samples." he sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. "So far, nothing seems so different for me to report back to Prof. Hastings."
"That's interesting." Wynter nodded politely.
"Anyways, enough about why I'm here. Why are you two here?" Isaac looked up from shuffling papers, and smirked. "Going on a midnight stroll, but wanted to inform someone?"
"Not at all!" I cried, waving my hands in front of me as both my face and Wynters heated up. "We actually came to discuss something very serious with you."
"What?" Isaac asked, looking back into the microscope.
"Well... remember the Child-Angel-Demon Experiment of 2001?" I asked. Isaac stopped what he was doing, and looked up at us, a grim look on his face.
"That was the experiment that killed dozens of children. A massive manslaughter, from the rumors still going through the Ranger net. Supposedly no survivors."
"About the 'no survivors' part..." I looked towards Wynter, and she nodded, giving me permission to continue. I muttered 'Reveal Thyself' in Angelic, and our wings popped out. Isaac... I'm not sure he took it to well. He literally fell out of his chair.
"I must've fallen asleep or something. There's no way this is real."
"Sorry, buddy, but it is." I said, shoving my hands in my pockets. Wynter helped the kid genius up.
"Are you going to be okay?" she asked as he sat down.
"I think so. Just came as a huge shock to me, that's all." he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Care to explain what's going on?"
"We're survivors of the experiment." I stated simply.
"Can you really fly?"
"That and much more." Wynter answered quietly.
"What else can you do?" he asked. I wasn't sure if I should answer this or not.
"We both control an element." Wynter said. "I can control ice, and Surge has powers over electricity."
"Incredible." Isaac said. "Are there others? More survivors?" Wynter and I locked eyes, and we looked down.
"That's not our secret to tell." Wynter whispered.
"Understandable. But why are you telling me this?"
"Because we've both been experiencing these 'Dark Modes'. It's sorta like a temporary blackout, and we loose control of ourselves." I explained. "Recently, one of the survivors lost complete control, and literally had to have some sense knocked into him. It's been getting steadily worse over time, and all of us are feeling the effects. We want to know if you can figure out what's wrong, and maybe come up with a solution." Isaac sat thoughtfully for a moment, before looking up.
"I'll need a blood sample from both of you, and maybe a blood sample from each of the 'survivors' that may be out there. The situation may be different for each of you, and in order to find a solution, I'll need to know the level of intensity for each of you."
"A blood sample...?" Wynter asked. "Right here? And now?"
"Unless you want to wait till tomorrow." Isaac said as he approached us with two separate needles, a band of rubber, and two small capsules.
"You actually have all this stuff on hand?" I asked.
"Yes. I believe I mentioned taking pokémons blood samples before. Don't worry though, these are new." he turned towards Wynter. "Ladies first?" Wynter shook her head, eyeing the needles fearfully.
"Wynter, it's fine. You can trust Isaac." I said, watching as her skin began to pale.
"No. All needles ever did to me was brought harm and pain into my life." She whispered.
"Yeah, but this time I'm here, and trust me, if Isaac does hurt you, then you can rest assured that he'll never come near you again." I said reassuringly, and somewhat threateningly towards my old friend. Slowly, she sat down, rolled up her sleeve, and took my hand. Isaac tied the strip of rubber tightly around her upper arm, and wiped an alcohol swipe over the spot where he planned to inject the needle. Wynter gripped my hand tighter as the needle went in, and I watched as the blood flowed from the needle through the small wire connecting it to the capsule. After it was halfway filled, Isaac, pulled the needle out, and pressed some gauze to the spot where a small bit of blood spouted up.
"Just hold that there," Isaac said as he undid the rubber, and placed the capsule near his microscope. "The bleeding will stop soon." He turned towards me. "Your turn, Surge." I nodded, and took the process was repeated on me.
"Thanks." I said as I got up towards the door.
"No problem. I was going to take blood samples from you and your friends anyways. Need it in case the police need your DNA or something like that. I don't quite recall what Chairperson Erma said, but it's mandatory." he stretched. "But now it seems that I have a thousand and one more reasons to take a closer look at all of your blood." My head snapped up at him, and Wynter gasped. "I trust you don't want any more of the survivors to know about this meeting?"
"I-That would be appreciated." I said, rethinking what I was going to say.
"Great. I'll have the results of my findings in a few days." he walked out the door, smiling at the two of us. "Goodnight."
