3rd Persons POV
Three days; Kit sat beside Riku's side for three days straight after DiZ had helped her and Namine move Riku back into their room. She was exhausted, hungry, but most of all worried about the silver haired boy who had yet to awake from his encounter with Roxas and Xigbar. Namine came by to check on them both several times throughout the day, but Kit refused to leave his side for anything.
She ran her hand through his hair; pushing it out of his face as his blindfold lay forgotten on the dresser. His wounds had just about completely healed due to the potion Namine had told her to give him when they got back. Kit watched him with worried yellow eyes that were shadowed by her long silvery white lashes.
"How are you going to help Sora if you don't wake up?" Kit questioned the unconscious boy as she twisted a lock of his hair around her finger.
"Come on, Riku. It's time to get up now. Your friends are waiting." Kit whispered to him softly and he shifted ever so slightly.
Riku's eyes fluttered open and what he saw hovering over him made him reseal his eyes for just a moment. A teenage girl with long silvery white hair was bent over his figure; her bright yellow eyes filled with worry and fear. Riku shut his eyes, thinking he was dreaming and a bright flash of light lit up the room for a moment.
When Riku's eyes opened again he was in the company of his assigned side kick. The small silver fox rubbed her cheek against his softly before sitting upright on his chest with her head tilted to the side. She mewled at him causing him to rub her head as he tried to remember exactly what had happened.
Kit watched as Riku's rather confused look melted into one of bitter rage causing the darkness in his heart to seep through his skin. She mewled at him frantically as fear started to overtake her before she let out a shrill cry that caused Riku to jump slightly which caused his darkness to dwindle back down to its usual amount. Kit continued to whine even after Riku rubbed her head and hugged her softly to his chest.
"I'm sorry…." Riku whispered to her as he sat up with her still held to his chest.
Riku's arms loosened only enough to lower her onto his lap before he buried his face into his hands. Kit nudged his arm with her nose feeling just as guilty; after all if she hadn't just ran off before finishing Xigbar off, Riku would have never been knocked out by him. She could feel the anger, as well as the sadness that radiated off of Riku.
Kit mewled at him before her stomach growled much to her own embarrassment. Riku's hands fell from his face before a chuckle bubbled up his throat. Kit mewled again and rubbed her head against his chest only to have him pick her up.
"Let's go find you something to eat." Riku told her softly as he swung his legs off the bed and stood up.
Riku nearly lost his balance, but caught himself as Kit stared up at him with concerned yellow irises. Once he righted himself, he flicked her ear and headed out the door without even checking to see if he was dressed correctly. Riku walked the whole way to the kitchen without anyone noticing him and set Kit onto the counter as he looked for something for the two of them.
It was a little upsetting that no one had taken care of Kit while he was out, but that also led him back to self-loathing as her took out the carton of eggs from the refrigerator. Riku let out a deep sigh as he fished the frying pan from the cabinet and set it on the stove before cracking a couple of eggs into the pan. Kit watched him with a mild interest before she walked across the counter to a small stack of bowls that she pushed over to him; keeping them steady with her head.
Riku set Kit's bowl on the counter and took his own over to the table where he sat down. He pushed the eggs back and forth in the bowl as he rested his chin on his free hand and stared at a spot on the wall blankly. He was loathing himself for losing to Roxas, for not being strong enough, for everything had had done to his best friend and even leaving the small fox that shadowed him by herself.
Kit could feel the anger, the hatred emanating off of Riku and without much thought to it she jumped off the counter; her bowl already empty. She jumped into an empty chair which helped her get onto the table and sat down in front of Riku with her head tilted to the side. His darkness was growing again and Kit didn't like this brooding at all.
She swatted at Riku's hand bringing him back to reality as her tail swished across the table in a slow fashion. Kit mewled at him before nudging the bowl towards him and sitting back on her haunches while looking up at him expectantly. Riku shook his head lightly before tapping her nose with his finger after he dropped his fork.
"You're as persistent as ever. You still hungry?" Riku inquired only to have her shake her head as she nudged the bowl towards him again.
Riku sighed heavily and began to eat with Kit watching him; her tail swishing much faster than before. Kit patiently waited for Riku to finish eating and clean up the mess they had made. She followed him just as she normally would as he headed down to the computer room.
Namine and DiZ were surprised when the silver haired boy walked into the room, but he didn't speak to them as he walked to the door that led to the pod room. Once Riku disappeared through the door Kit switch forms and a frown tugged at her lips as Namine and DiZ turned towards her.
"How long has he been awake?" Namine inquired softly; worry was apparent in her blue eyes.
"Twenty to thirty minutes. He's been really sulky and angry since he woke up. It worries me." Kit spoke softly as her back met the wall next to the door.
"He failed in bringing Roxas back and in doing so; Sora's memories are continuing to stand still." DiZ spoke in his normal dismissive tone which was met with a snarl.
"He tried his best. Roxas is being trained by the organization. Riku isn't being trained at all, except for the training he does when he has free time. Why are you always so…demeaning?" Kit hissed much to DiZ and Namine's surprise, but DiZ's surprise was quickly replaced with something Kit couldn't identify.
"I told you not to get close to him. You are…."
"…a shadow of the worlds. I am not suppose to exist and when everything is said and done I will belong nowhere. I will do nothing, but stay in the shadows and live as such. That speech is over preached and I'm sick of it. I have feelings too DiZ. I'm not your damned puppet, and I will no longer be treated as such!" Kit snapped hotly before she fled the room altogether.
Kit's feet carried her to the back yard of the mansion where a small bed of flowers were in full bloom. She dropped to her knees beside the bed and dug out the weeds and grass; only leaving the flowers. DiZ's word hurt and they hurt worse every time he said them which only made it worse for Kit.
She already felt out of place, felt like an outsider, but to be constantly reminded was too much. She switched back to her fox form and made her way to the top of the stone wall that bordered the yard. She lay in the darkest place she could find and just watched the yard as if it would do something to entertain her.
She stayed in her spot ever after Namine came looking for her. Namine wasn't one to give up on finding the small fox, but when Riku entered the yard she ducked out after just a few words were said between them. Kit watched in boredom as Riku started training and even fell asleep after watching him for several minutes.
Kit was awakened hours later by something hitting and shaking the wall she was on. Her eyes flew open as she looked down only to see black scorch marks marring the wall and Riku standing not so far away with his arm raised in that direction. Her hair bristled at the strong scent of darkness and she realized he had used a strong dark magic that fed off of his own darkness.
Kit made her way down the wall while Riku seemed to be trying to catch his breath. His hair was weighed down with sweat as were his clothes which told that he had been training all day. Kit was careful when she approached him; not knowing what he might do at this point.
She mewled which made his head snap up in her direction as she made her way through the grass. Riku dropped into a kneeling position as Kit came up to him and scooped her up into his arms. He turned and headed towards the sliding glass doors of the mansion with her in his arms.
"Where've you been hiding?" Riku inquired as he scratched between the small fox's ears receives a purr like noise in response.
Riku's feet carried him back to their room and into the bathroom where he set the small fox on the counter. He slipped the black muscle shirt over his head as he walked over to the bath which he turned on before going to retrieve a towel. Kit jumped down off the counter and walked over to the tub; waiting for Riku to return.
She could hear the rustling of Riku's clothes before she was picked up and held as Riku climbed into the tub. The bath smelled of the ocean and Kit could only guess that the bubbles in the tub were the cause of the smell. Riku placed her at his feet as he sunk down to his shoulders in tub; his neck craned backwards as he leaned his head against the tub rim.
Kit could sense his exhaustion and knew he would need a few more days to rest, but knowing DiZ, Riku wouldn't get any rest. Riku's eyes were closed and his whole being seemed to relax as the smell of the water along with the heat took over the bathroom.
It was an hour or so later when Riku emerged from the bathroom; a towel wrapped around his waist, another hung loosely over his head and a third in his arms with Kit wrapped up inside. He set her down on the bed before sitting down on the edge himself. Kit wormed herself out of the towel having already been scrubbed till she was almost dry and tilted her head as she watched Riku.
He had his head bowed as his elbows rest on his knees with his hands hanging loosely in between them. She mewled softly, but Riku didn't move which caused her to move to his side carefully. She put both of her front paws onto his leg and peered under the towel only to find Riku looking at the floor.
She mewled again before steadying her whole being on his thigh and placing her front paws on his shoulder. Kit rubbed her cheek again his in a caring fashion which finally got Riku to bring his graze from the floor. He sat up straight, the towel falling from his head as he looked at the small fox whose paws slid from his shoulder to his chest.
A confused mewl left Kit's mouth before Riku hugged her to him and she stiffened before laying her head gently on his shoulder. Regret, sorrow, despair, these were only a few of the emotions Kit could feel and she wished so bad to break the rules and just hold Riku for even a moment. She could admit that she wasn't bright, that she knew very little, but she also knew that a hug and encouraging words helped those who were hurting; even if the words were lies.
Kit didn't know how long Riku held her nor did she care; she just felt horrible about not being able to be a bigger help to the one she shadowed. Riku didn't let her go until he had stood up and turned around so that he could set her down on the bed. He was quiet as he walked away to put on something to sleep in and she watched him as he disappeared back into the bathroom.
Kit shook her fur out before walking to the head of the bed and catching the hem of the covers in her mouth. She pulled them to the foot of the bed before returning to the head and pawing Riku's pillow around a bit to make it fluffy again. She did the same to her own pillow before circling a spot in the middle and lying down in a ball.
The door to the bathroom clicked as Riku opened it and walked back into the room. He headed straight for the bed and climbed into his spot with the springs of the bed protesting every move. He pulled the covers up to his shoulders before running his hand along Kit's curved backbone.
Riku slipped his hand beneath her form catching her attention as he brought her closer to him. He laid her on his chest and then proceeded to lay his hand on her back as his fingers played with her fur. His eyes were blank and he starred at the ceiling until they finally fell shut and sleep over took him and his shadow.
