Chapter 2: Dinner and a Show
As soon as Lynn and Rita entered the foyer of their home, they were immediately besieged by an onslaught of their many children cascading down the staircase. In order to stay incognito, Lucy chose to forego the hamster ball and instead hid in Lincoln's shirt pocket.
"Hey mom, hey dad, how are you doing? Can I take your bags for you?" Lori said rapidly, trying desperately to distract her parents from the elephant in the room.
"Why, that is very kind of you to ask, Lori!" replied Lynn Sr. "I do hope you aren't just doing this to get something out of your mother and I!" he said, chuckling at his own joke. It was clear that the joke did not go over well considering not even Luan laughed at it. There was an awkward silence in the air before Lynn Sr loudly cleared his throat. Without saying a word, Lori picked up the grocery bag her father was holding and headed to the kitchen.
"So, were there any issues while we were away?" inquired Rita.
"Well, there was like, this thing with Lucy and one of Lisa's inve-" Leni started before suddenly being cut off by Lincoln covering her mouth with his hand.
"Nope! Everything went perfectly fine! Not a single problem!" declared Lincoln, forcing a nervous smile.
Rita gave her son a confused look and seemed to be unsure of her children's suspicious behavior. What could they be hiding?
From inside of her brother's lint-ridden pocket, Lucy whispered "Good save, Lincoln" to her older sibling.
Unfortunately for the pair, Rita heard this. "Lincoln did your shirt just talk?" she asked, absolutely perplexed as to what was going on with her middle child's strange behavior.
"Nope!" Lincoln said in response, secretly panicking internally, "It must have been a rat or something in the walls! I guess Cliff is slacking off on the job! Heh-heh." Lincoln joked in order to defuse the growing tense situation.
Rita didn't say anything in response and just continued to stare at Lincoln with a concerned and worried look before turning to help her husband in the kitchen.
The children of the Loud House all sat around the dining table as their parents were busy in the kitchen preparing supper. The air around the table was tense as the siblings planned how to break the news of Lucy's change in size.
"What are we going to do, guys?" Lori asked her younger siblings, a mix between fear and concern in her voice.
"Seeing that this situation is partially my fault, I feel that it is my duty to inform our parents. I will be detailed and careful in my explanation of Lucy's predicament." Lisa stated, pointing her finger in the air in a matter-of-factually way.
"Just try to keep the technobabble to a minimum, Lisa." said Lincoln. "The last thing we need is Mom and Dad getting confused and not understanding what is going on!"
Before Lisa had a chance to respond, Rita and Lynn came out of the kitchen, Lynn holding a tray of Lynn-sagna in his hands.
"Not understand what going on?" inquired Rita.
"N-nothing! Just trying to get Lisa to help Leni with her algebra homework!" Lincoln lied.
"Oh well that is nice, she has been struggling in that class." Rita replied nonchalantly though still secretly suspicious of what her only son was telling her.
Perhaps the one good thing about Lucy being the victim of this fiasco is that her parents tended to forget her. Obviously not out of a lack of love or on purpose, but simply because she was so quiet, and they had a hard enough time keeping track of ten other rambunctious kids as it was! So, it did not raise any alarm bells when there was an empty seat at the table, at least at first.
As they ate, the kids tried to distract their parents from asking about Lucy by talking about other topics and it seemed to be going well to the point where Lincoln began to let his guard down, happily eating his meal, unaware of his miniature goth sister was up to. Within the boy's shirt, Lucy was secretly drooling over the intoxicating smell of warm pasta, she hadn't eaten all day and while her father's cooking tended to be hit or miss, she always loved his signature dish and was disappointed that she couldn't enjoy it with rest of her family.
They were halfway through dinner when Rita asked the one question that the Loud children were dreading…
"Kids, where is Lucy?"
The pasta Lincoln was chewing turned into ash in his mouth as he heard his mother's question, the Lynn-sagna landing like a rock in his stomach as he swallowed nervously. "Uh, I think she said she staying at Haiku's place for the night." he said, trying to quickly formulate an acceptable lie.
"Really? She didn't tell us that she would be away tonight." Lynn Sr said, questioning his son's answer.
At this point Lincoln began sweating profusely, fearful of what will happen if his parents found about the state of his younger sister.
"Lincoln, you have been acting strange all evening, is there something secret you are keeping from us?" Rita asked, glaring menacingly at Lincoln.
"Oh shoot!" Lincoln thought to himself, full on panicking at this point.
"L-Lisa, would you care to explain the situation to Mom and Dad?" the white-haired boy anxiously said to his sister.
But before the shaggy-haired genius could get a single word out, a tiny black-haired girl leapt out of Lincoln's pocket and into the Lynn-sagna!
What followed was absolute chaos. Lola screamed in horror as her perfectly laundered dress was suddenly splattered with marinara sauce, Lori instinctively started yelling at Lincoln, believing what was going on was his fault. Seeing an opportunity to further gross out her sister, Lana sloppily ate from her dinner plate, imitating Charles with his dog bowl. Upon seeing this, Lola went into full on hysterics. "EWW, LANA YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!" the little princess shouted at the tops of her lungs, nearly piercing her relative's eardrums, she was even louder than Luna's amp turned all the way to eleven!
As this was going on, the little goth played around in the Lynn-sagna, moving through the pasta and marinara sauce with a backstroke.
"What the ding-dang?!" cried Lynn Sr, incredulous at the sight of what appeared to be his young gothic daughter swimming in the family dinner!
"LINCOLN ALBERT LOUD!" Rita and Lynn shouted at their only son, instantly silencing the room.
"Uh oh." Lincoln thought to himself. "Middle name…"
"Lincoln…" Lynn grumbling behind gritted teeth, seething with anger. "Would you care to explain why your sister was in your SHIRT POCKET?!"
"It was Lisa, it was her invention, I had no part in this!" the white-haired boy responded, placing the blame on his genius sister.
"Lisa is what your brother is saying true?" asked Rita, anger still evident in her voice.
"Yes, but it's not my fault!" Lisa exclaimed "Lily was the one who turned it on!"
"I am very disappointed in you, Lisa. Lily is just a baby; you shouldn't blame her for your mistake, we keep telling you to be more careful with your contraptions, but you don't seem to listen!"
"Yes, mother." Lisa said, sounding defeated.
"I assume you know how to fix this?" Rita asked.
"O-of course mother!" Lisa replied nervously. "The issue is that after Lucy's transformation, the machine kind of…broke, and I will need to replace the parts necessary to fix the shrink ray and return Lucy to normal size."
Rita turned to her husband, and they went off into the kitchen to discuss what do about this situation in private. In the dining room the atmosphere was tense as the Loud children sat around the table speculating on what their parent had in mind.
"They'll probably ground you for a million billion years!" Lana said to Lisa.
"Lana, stop. It won't be anything like that." Lori rebuked her tomboy sister. "What would you say a tolerable punishment would be, Lisa?
"I would say a week without remote access to the Summit Supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory would be a fitting castigation given the circumstances." stated Lisa.
"You have remote access to a government supercomputer?" inquired Lincoln.
Lisa ignored her brother's question and continued with what she saying. "I just hope they don't decide to cancel my trip to the Young Cadet Space Camp at NASA this week, I really want to go, and I have already purchased tickets to Houston!"
Unbeknownst to their children, Lynn Sr and Rita were secretly listening to their discussion, to be honest, they were still processing the idea of one of their daughters being shrunk down by another! They knew Lisa was very smart and they did know her experiments tended to go wrong, but never like this!
After waiting for a while, the adults of the Loud House reentered the dining room to announce their decision to the genius daughter.
"Lisa, your father and I have discussed what to do about this situation." Rita stated. "We have decided that you have until the end of the week to repair your machine and return your sister to normal, otherwise we will not allow you to attend the Young Cadet Space Camp this year."
"But, but…" stammered Lisa.
"No buts, young lady!" barked Lynn Sr. "Our decision is final, either fix your sister or cancel your plans!"
"Yes, father." Lisa responded in the same defeated tone she used with Rita.
"Now then, back to more important matters…Lucy!" Lynn called his gothic daughter to attention.
"Yeah, Dad?" Lucy squeaked in her usual monotone.
"Since you are no longer able to sleep in your regular room, you will have to stay with one of your siblings in their room. Lola, given your "outburst" earlier, your mother and I have decided to give this responsibility to you."
"What? Why?!" shrieked the blond princess. "This whole situation is Lisa's fault! Make her take care of Lucy!"
"Lisa has already received her punishment which is to fix her machine in the given amount of time, and we can't have her be distracted with caring for Lucy." stated Lynn Sr.
"This is completely unfair! I had nothing to with Lucy getting shrunk!" moaned Lola.
"Hmm, tell you what, how about you split the responsibility with Lincoln. You take care of Lucy for the first part of the week and Lincoln takes care for her for the other half. Lincoln, this will be your punishment for lying to us." stated Lynn Sr.
"Yes, dad." Lincoln begrudgingly agreed.
"Sounds alright to me." Lola said of her father's suggestion. "Come on Lucy." the little princess said to her older sister, gingerly picking up the marinara-covered goth and heading upstairs.
After dinner, the first thing Lola decided to do with Lucy was to get her cleaned up! Heading to the bathroom, she set her tiny sister down on the sink and began to run the water. After letting the sink fill up, Lola added some fancy soap and body wash that she normally used on herself to the growing pool of water which resulted in it turning a sweet-smelling pink color!
Making her younger sister turn around as she got undressed, the tiny goth silently slipped out of her stained clothes and into the makeshift bathtub. The water was warm and relaxing, enough to make Lucy start to feel drowsy.
Removing her opera gloves, Lola began lightly scrubbing away marinara sauce and pasta that was stuck to Lucy's hair. The pink princess couldn't help but be amused by the whole situation. Her parents intended for this to be a punishment, but she was genuinely enjoying herself! It was if Lucy was one of her dolls and an adorable one at that! She giggled softly as Lucy played under the sink and gently rinsed her hair. The pair's fun time was cut short however, when Lynn Jr suddenly started banging on the bathroom door.
"Lola, what the heck are you doing in there?! Hurry up, I gotta drop a massive load!" Lynn shouted in her "charming" vernacular.
Sighing heavily, Lola fished Lucy out of the sink and wrapped her up in a warm hand towel before pulling out the sink stopper and letting the water drain out.
As soon as Lola and Lucy left the bathroom, Lynn charged in as if were one of her football games and promptly slammed the door behind her. From outside the bathroom, loud moaning noises could be heard and neither Lola nor Lucy wanted to imagine what going in there.
Upon reaching the room she shared with her twin sister, Lola set Lucy down on her pink, plastic table. Having not eaten, dinner Lola decided to bake Lucy some chocolate chip cookies in one her many Cutey-Bake ovens.
As Lucy ate, the little princess was busy brainstorming ideas of how she could entertain her tiny goth sister when she finally came up with the idea to throw a fashion show with her dolls!
Gathering her favorite dolls and stuffed animals, Lola dressed them in her many pageant dresses and created a makeshift runway for her to strut down. Despite Lola's best efforts (and her best duck faces) Lucy did not seem impressed.
While Lola understood that Lucy rarely enjoyed the same things she did, she was still eager to make her sister's stay with her as enjoyable as possible.
After a bit more brainstorming, Lola thought of something that was sure to make Lucy laugh. Taking a few of Lana's animals out of their terrariums, she decided to include them in the fashion show!
Lola danced around the room, wearing El Diablo around her neck as he were a feather boa followed by dressing Hops in one her dresses and putting lipstick and makeup on the amphibians' face!
The princess's fun time was cut short however, when her tomboy sister Lana entered the room.
"Hey Lola, have you seen my 2 ½ inch socket-WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Lana shrieked in horror at the sight of her beloved frog wearing Lola's girly clothing.
"Oh, hey Lana, I was just throwing Lucy a little fashion show." Lola sheepishly admitted.
"What did you do to Hops?! He is a living being, Lola! You can't treat him like one of your toys! And is that lipstick?! Who do think you are, L'Oréal? Lana said, interrogating her sister
"Stop being so dramatic, Lana! I was just having a little fun!" Lola retorted.
What followed was a typical Lola vs Lana feud, they started with name-calling and childish insults, followed by throwing things before things devolved into a full on fight cloud!
From her spot on the table, Lucy chuckled to herself while continuing to cutely eat her cookie, now this was entertaining! The tiny goth continued to watch the two bicker back and forth in schadenfreudian delight until it grew to be boring and exhausted from the day's events, she was quickly overcome by sleep.
The thing about Lola vs Lana feuds is that they thankfully don't last long and during a lull in their conflict, the pair noticed that their tiny gloomy sister had fallen asleep. The twin shared a precious 'AWWW' together and decided to put their differences aside once again (or at least until the next argument) but not before Lana tasked Lola with cleaning the makeup off Hops and putting him back in his tank.
Once she returned to her room, Lola carefully picked Lucy up and carried her over to Lola's oversized doll house and gently set on one it's many plastic beds and used a clean tissue for a blanket. Lucy was beat after one the most eventful days of her life but come morning she'll learn to appreciate life from a whole new perspective!
