Chapter One: The Mark
What should be familiar to him is anything but. And what should have been the successful execution of a simple, straightforward plan has deteriorated into sky-shattering disaster. Now it is up to him to pick up the pieces.
One of those pieces lies at his feet, curled in on herself.
Solas studies her while she sleeps, wondering and worrying. Who is she? She looks so frail in that small, dark dungeon, so vulnerable. How did this wisp of an elf make it in and out of the Fade without breaking?
Perhaps she did break. To find out, he will have to wait for her to regain consciousness. She may be his only hope of undoing this inadvertent mistake.
The Breach is still active, brewing and belching like a volcano. Each time the mark reacts, she cries out in pain, but she does not wake. He places his hand on hers and soothes what he can. Feeling helpless, powerless, he tries not to wallow in regret. He will fix this.
He must.
"I am sorry," he whispers.
Outside, the Breach thunders.
…
More demons.
His charge still hasn't awakened, and he's beginning to doubt she ever will. Cassandra grows more impatient by the hour. She is frightened. Everybody is. Solas knows all too well that fear is dangerous. He must stop this.
Leaving the unconscious girl with the guards, he makes one last attempt to seal the Breach. Too soon, he realizes he cannot even close the first rift he comes across. He is too weak. The most he can do is hold off the demons that pour through the rift and watch as people die for his mistake. They are not real, he tells himself. They cannot be.
Then she arrives, alive and, more importantly, awake.
There is no time to wonder, only time to act. His hand closes around her wrist. He points the mark at the rift and—finally—it is sealed.
He releases her quickly, fingertips prickling as though they've fallen asleep and are just beginning to wake. He clenches and unclenches them absently. The mark must have shocked him while closing the rift. He doesn't know it yet, but this is not the last time he will touch her hand, nor is it the last time her touch will make him shiver.
For now, the shock is simply a pleasant surprise, proof that everything can be made right. He looks at her with a curious smile. Together, they will make it right.
