Wiping tears, the wizard pulled his focus from his recently slaughtered brother to the giant holding his godson. Sirius wouldn't attack anyone holding Harry to begin with, and Hagrid was his friend! A bit obstinate at times, but his skin was just as tough as his determination. Best to give in, and just collect Harry later. Besides, he knew where Hagrid was going. He should; he'd been there before.

He'd gone there with James and Lily just after the Evans had been killed very suspiciously. Despite the hard feelings, Lily had to protect her only living family. So, they put up highly illegal wards around a muggle house. Of course, that was before Harry was born.

James! His brother by adoption into the House of Potter lay there dead. Hagrid placed a kind hand on Sirius' shoulder. "Don't fuss. Harry will be checked over at Hogwarts then taken over to Petunia's. He'll be safe there while we take care of the rest of that lot."

"Yeah, like Peter. I need to let the DMLE know to arrest him. Look, Hagrid. Here's a letter. The magic of it - Dumbledore will know it's true. It tells everyone about the switch. Please make sure our good leader gets it. I've got to see that Pettigrew is brought in for Justice. After that, we'll track all of the rest of them, and make them pay for the deaths they caused. Then I'm quitting, to help take care of Harry."

"Yer a good man, Black. Thanks for the use of the bike. Oh, nearly forgot. Dumbledore asked me to give this to ye if I saw ye."

The knut was passed over as Hagrid settled goggles on his head. As the machine roared to life, Sirius Black's entire demeanor changed in an instant.

Pettigrew! He had to find him right then! He was desperate! But he suddenly remembered the powerful tracking spell. His grandfather had taught it to him just recently. He readied his wand, trying to overcome his sudden rage to perform House Black magic. He didn't like wearing his Heir ring but he summoned it from his mokeskin bag and put it on. The ring responded to his request for help. But instead of powerful family magics, Sirius Black found himself bound and delivered to the House ritual room.

Falling to his knees, Sirius wept in frustration to be unable to finish his quest until his grandfather's powerful stunner put him out of his misery.

Gabrielle Duncan, light blonde haired and pale complected was dozing. A few months back, she had lost her very young daughter and husband in a Death Eater attack on their small farm that was just outside Hogsmeade. They had meant to kill her too; retaliation for her auror grandfather's actions against them.

Good friends of his were attacked just the next day, and a small child was left without a mother to nurse her. She had taken the job offer for two reasons. It gave her life a bit of purpose, and it was an honorable way to earn a living.

Magical children needed a witch's milk to become strong.

She was home for the night; it was All Hallow's Eve. She wasn't expecting a visitor at the door, especially one wearing House Black colors.

"A letter from Lord Black, ma'am. I'm instructed to wait for a response, and escort ye if ye accept." the servant handed over the missive.

Gabby quickly took it and read, "Oh no! Not again! Heir to the Heir of your House left orphaned. I'm so sorry. Yes, I'll go up to the school right now. Let me get my cloak."

The manservant helped her into warm wool and together apparated to the main gates. They opened at the touch of a stone the man had.

"How did you do that?" Gabby asked while they stepped into the carriage waiting there. The manservant seemed to dither whether or not he should ride with the lady, and as she pointed, he perforce sat.

"Ma'am? I ask no questions, and am told no lies. If I were to guess, I would say some of the keys to Hogwarts were left at Blackmoor Keep on the passing of Headmaster Black."

"Most likely."

It didn't take long for them to get up to the infirmary, where her new charge was indeed in need of her help. The matron didn't seem surprised by her arrival, and the wizard with her joined another dressed like him to stand guard against the walls.

While they conferred in low voices, Gabby introduced herself to Harry, and settled the baby for a nurse and needed cuddle.

The mediwitch took that opportunity of using the floo to request help from Saint Mungos. The baby's scar had the most odd readings she'd ever seen. And nothing she'd done could heal it completely.

After deploying elves to take care of James, Lily, and the contents of the cottage, Lord Black summoned Bellatrix. He knew from the Book of Life that her husband was dead this night. Died not a half hour after James.

Lord Black felt that James should have been standing there, in Judgement of Bellatrix, with him. Why had the protections of Potter Hall been lost so long ago? Why had his sister been killed not two years before, the ancient home left nothing but ruins? Oh, the elves had managed to save most of the library, and Dorea's jewelry was eventually recovered, but his friend and ally in the Wizengamot, Charlus, was killed as was Dorea, and now their son had joined them in Avalon.

And with the Lestrange boy's death so close to James, there had to be a connection.

Bellatrix, just as trussed up as Sirius was, didn't enjoy being on her knees, and forced to speak truth through powerful family magic.

"So? Your Dark Lord is not dead, and you have something of his in your vault? Are you insane? If the goblins found out about this, you'd lose not only a valuable trinket, but your head the next time you visited! Did you think about that?"

Lord Black was furious he hadn't taken a stand against this madman. Dark lords came and went, and usually did some good in terms of keeping witches like Bellatrix occupied with doing a little mayhem rather than brooding around the manor.

But she hadn't contained her bloodlust to squibs and muggles! To attack magicals? To kill good witches and wizards for no reason? To kill her own cousin!

"But I refused to attack James or Frank! They are blood family. I love Jamie, and begged my Master for mercy!" Bellatrix wailed.

"Is this why you needed the potion for the Cruciatus curse?" Arcturus demanded.

"Yes, my lord. My husband isn't the only one who died tonight. His brother went with them, along with my Master's spy. Even I don't know his identity. Very few do."

"Would Lucius know? I've sent a letter to Narcissa. She can repudiate this Dark Lord and stay a member of the House or be kicked out. That might hurt Malfoy financially, but I won't make it a public denouncement. I never denied my children or grandchildren anything. Not even Walburga or Orion. Do you know how my son Orion died?" Lord Black demanded.

"Two years ago on the war wards of Potter Keep. He didn't wait for the signal to attack. The wards were still up." Bellatrix began weeping. She clearly hadn't approved of that attack either, but was under some kind of geas that kept her from sharing this information earlier.

"Idiot. So, there was a traitor from within that brought down the wards."

"I don't understand it, Grandfather." Now Bella was cooperating a bit. "Dumbledore himself was spotted there, and yet he refused to fight! Called for peace and love and mercy, I'm told."

"Yet another idiot in my humble opinion." Lord Black muttered. "Well, child? Will you help me to destroy this monster completely? Do you see where he went wrong?"

"Yes, Grandfather. I swear on my magic. I will not serve the Dark Lord again. But my Mark: If he were to come back, he could track me, or even punish me through this."

"We'll find a solution to this conundrum later. Swear you won't kill anyone else in the family, especially Harry Potter. Swear it! And I will release you, and you will be restored to a full Daughter of the House."

Bellatrix swore, and for a second, almost wished she hadn't. They had not been as alone in the family ritual as she thought.

Mist parted. Andromeda was there and in her arms was her witch daughter. Everyone there could see she was magical as her hair kept changing color. A metamorphmagus in the family. Powerful Black magic.

She also saw her cousin Sirius. He was now seated in a chair but still bound, struggling mightily against them. Without the silencing spell, Lord Black's interrogation would have been interrupted several times. If he'd been unbound, Bellatrix would likely be dead.

A very handsome private healer was looking over Sirius. Healer Greengrass had worked for the Black family for the last few years.

"You! Traitor! You left the Dark Lord…" Bellatrix trailed off, realizing that she too had just done the same.

"Yes I did." Greengrass stated proudly, "Now hush. I'm trying to dispel a very strong compulsion here. Not normal magic. If I didn't know better, I would say it had been cast in parseltongue."

Lord Black spoke up, "Don't believe that old wag that there aren't many parseltongues in the world. Charlus Potter was one, but kept his talent secret in this country. He added to Fleamont's fortunes considerably using that talent in Egypt. It even pops up now and then in the Black family." The man finished proudly.

"I didn't know that. Well, well. There might be other snake speakers hiding out there. Oh, here we go." The healer unsheathed his wand.

"Wait, Greengrass! Are you sure?" Arcturus asked.

"It won't hurt him if it doesn't work." Marius stated as he cast after the Lord's nod.

"Harry! He's been taken to Hogwarts, but we have to hurry. Dumbledore plans to take him to his muggle family after that - and they hate magic! He could be killed!" Sirius shouted in a panic.

Arcturus scowled, but Bellatrix stood. "I can't go for obvious reasons. But Andromeda, or a few of your men could."

Sirius smiled at the compliment to Andi that she was worth three of any normal wizard.

Lord Black took charge. Banishing Sirius' bonds he stated, "I'll send people to monitor these muggles and make sure no one is hurt. But we are going to play this very carefully, or we'll have Bellatrix and Sirius in prison before first light.

"I'll send for Head Auror Bones to meet us at Hogwarts as we plead for the Heir of our Heir to be returned. Sirius will be Regent Potter until the child is of age. Bella? He'll need a strong witch in his life to teach him. You too, Andromeda."

"But what of Narcissa?" Sirius asked. "She is not yet here."

Arcturus looked at the clock, and shook his head. "Unless she has a very good reason, the sun has gone down on her return to the family. Though, to be thorough, we should check her vault and home for any 'trinkets' she might have. No Bellatrix! Say nothing. Just in case."

Sirius straightened, and couldn't help but notice the lingering look the healer gave him. The animagus winked at him. "Harry had been bleeding - a nasty cut on his forehead. None of the healing spells I tried worked at all. Will you come with us up to Hogwarts, Healer…?

"Marius. Marius Greengrass." The healer held out his hand, which Sirius took and shook.

"Well met. Now, let's go rescue my godson from the castle."

**OO**

Neither Sirius nor Arcturus knew that Harry was in no need of rescue. Little Susan Bones, just a few months older than Harry, had woken up with another nightmare, and nothing her nanny-elf could do would calm her.

"If you would take my charge, I would take care of Susie." Gabby offered.

The elf quickly agreed, taking Harry, along with a note for Madam Bones, back to the Ossuary. The nursemaid hadn't liked the way that Dumbledore had been looking at the Potter boy in the least. This was a layer of protection for the child.

She had tried three times to find a way out of the small apartment just off the infirmary. The door to the interior corridor had been walled up the minute she was inside. The interior door to the infirmary proper was locked very well indeed. She knew a variety of auror spells from both her brief marriage and her grandfather. No luck there. And the ceiling appeared to be impervious.

The window would no doubt offer a lovely view during daylight, but it was late. She had a bed, a small bathroom and had been provided water, and a nice tea tray.

She took Susie over to the rocker. The child was already calming. The sweet girl was a few months older than…no. No comparisons to her own sweet Gabrielle who now sang with the angels. Her daughter was safe, just moved. She herself was young enough to maybe find love in marriage next time.

Susie had been nursed, and changed, and swaddled up before being put back in the little cot provided for Harry.

Gabby had been about to call for Susan's elf when the interior door burst open. Dumbledore was by no means wide, but his power filled the doorway and pushed in on her.

"Time for young Harry to be returned to his family. Please wait here, my dear girl. I'll need to talk to you about tonight."

That wasn't ominous!

"But you can't take that ba…" Gabby tried to explain who that really was, but she was silenced. She did hope that Lord Black's manservants were physically fine. They were clearly no longer in the infirmary.

**OO**

"Maxwell? Why are you here? I told you to stay with Madam Duncan." Lord Black demanded.

"Who? I don't know what you mean, my lord. I was in Hogsmeade to get you some of your favorite tea and biscuits and stayed a bit too long listening to the bard at the Three Broomsticks. I'm sorry I'm late back."

"Where's the black stone I gave you?" Arcturus demanded.

The servant looked confused, and pulled out a small stone from his pocket. "But that's a…Sir? I think I've been cursed."

Marius ran a quick diagnostic. "Recent obliviation. I recommend rest and a good breakfast. He's alive and unhurt for the most part."

"Yes, but is the nurse?" Arcturus muttered.

Sirius opened his mokeskin bag, and put a few more supplies into it. He pulled out a pair of bracelets, one for his grandfather. "These are supposed to protect from Obliviations. I don't know if they'll work against Dumbledore's magic or not." Putting on his own protection amulet.

The older man put it on, scowling. He was glad he'd sent for Madam Bones to meet them there.

**OO**

Hagrid beamed at Lord and Heir Black with great enthusiasm at Hogwarts main gate.

"We're just back from…sorry, I'm not suppose ta talk about it. But I bet you're here for yer bike. A beauty it is."

Arcturus mumbled something about Hagrid's love of dangerous creatures, including that mechanical monstrosity, but just asked for entry to Hogwarts grounds.

"Dumbledore was very clear: No more visitors tonight. I'm sorry, but you'll have to go." Hagrid stated. "I'll deliver your bike tomorrow."

"You might lock these gates against them, but what about me? I have a report of a kidnapped child?" Auror Bones was a no-nonsense sort of person, and even Hagrid bowed to her.

"Tweren't no kidnap ma'am! We took the tyke to his family, we did!" Hagrid declared.

"Let me in! I'm told on good authority my nursemaid for my grandniece is being held prisoner within this castle! We have a missing child on our hands, and you seem to know something about it. You are being detained for questioning, but only after you let us in!" Bones declared.

The Black party was allowed in with the group of aurors. Hagrid was trying and failing to look innocent.

On the way in, Sirius looked up and saw a woman waving from a window next to the infirmary.

"I'll meet you up there soon, Grandfather. I see the witch being held captive."

He unshrunk a broom and ascended.

**OO**

Hogwarts was a great place to keep someone secure. It had wonderful wards. The castle itself would respond to the request of the headmaster, and add rooms or walls where needed.

It had one weakness, something the Founders had overlooked. Windows. Simple glass did not take enchantments well; they moved too much.

The glass window in the little room off the infirmary was soon banished, and Sirius Black had a pretty woman sitting behind him, holding him tightly as they swooped off.

But she refused to be taken to where she could apparate home or anything else.

"A child has been kidnapped!" The nurse declared upon landing.

"I know. My godson, Harry. I'm Sirius Black by the way. And may I ask your name?" The animagus extended his hand, at his most charming.

"Gabrielle Duncan. Please, call me Gabby, as I am to be nurse for Harry." She took his hand and smiled as he kissed hers. "But you don't understand!" And Gabby got him caught up by the time the group was met by Dumbledore in the corridor on the way to the infirmary.

**OO**

"...taking a child that is not your own, and putting him anywhere is kidnapping!" Madam Bones emphatically stated.

Airily waving off her concerns, Dumbledore continued, "I'll explain it all to the Wizengamot. Petunia is Harry's only living blood relative connected to Lily. The blood wards there will protect him from Death Eaters! It is essential that he live there. No where else is safe for him."

"You don't get to make those decisions!" Arcturus growled. "The child is my sister's grandson. Blood kin! Now, you need to go retrieve him, or I am going to file charges against you. Your choice."

Before Dumbledore finished laughing, Gabby had managed to get to Amelia's side.

"WHAT? Albus! You utter asinine fool! You think you placed Harry Potter with family? Where's my niece? My Susan?" Madam Bones demanded.

Arcturus turned to the nurse and saw the truth. "Sirius, send a patronus to our people. Bring the child in now. Madam Bones, pardon me. I knew where the child was supposed to be taken, and had my servants watching to make sure that he was kept safe from the muggles. They hate magic, you know."

"Where do you want them to bring the child?" Sirius asked.

"The Ministry. I don't care if we wake up the entire Wizarding World!" Amelia was furious.

Sirius sent the message and popped a pepper-up. He was feeling very drained.

Gabby was furious as well, "I tried to tell him! Harry had just gotten to sleep and your elf promised to watch over him while I took care of Susan. I couldn't get out of that room to attend her. Heir Black rescued me." She turned to Sirius, "I am most grateful to you."

The handsome young wizard smiled down at her. Was this witch a solution to his problem?

The healer had noted the grim form of the heir's patronus, and was most impressed. They had all been playing eye-tag, and the healer saw Sirius looking at the witch. Where was that jealousy sprouting from? They had barely met!

**OO**

The mess was indeed straightened out at the Ministry. Albus Dumbledore was facing charges of kidnapping.

It had been a close thing. He could have been facing murder charges.

Vernon Dursley, likely woken up by the sound of apparition, had gone to the front door. What had the old man been playing at by not waking up the house to begin with?

When the hostile muggle saw the basket, and read the letter, the guards watched him take the babe out of the basket, and place him behind the tyre of the automobile. They watched him pat his robe pockets; the man realized he didn't have his keys, so apparently went into the house to get them.

The guards had already snatched the child up and were back at Blackmoor Keep when they received word to take the sleeping toddler to the Ministry.

One of them did. The other stayed, and searched out the powerful witch there. He whispered in Bellatrix' ear what the muggle had been about to do.

They went one way, but the child wound up at the Ministry as requested.

Dumbledore's argument was that this was all Sirius' fault for killing the Potters to begin with. But the young man was now on his guard. He didn't even try to ask for the letter back from Dumbledore. He realized it had to have been destroyed by now. Instead, he handed over sealed letters addressed to Amelia Bones, Alastor Moody, and one for Lord Black himself.

"You see, the Potter magical seal is still intact." Sirius related a bit of his own adventure with madness. He asked for someone else –preferably gloved– to retrieve the knut from his pocket. A tired Healer Greengrass gave his report.

Gabby was in tears about Susan. "I would never endanger that child! If she had been killed, I would have likely lost my magic, you old fraud!"

She had thought Dumbledore was a great hero. But the man under the cloak was a monster as far as she was concerned.

"Please tell me you're going to arrest this muggle! That had to be a crime." Arcturus demanded.

Auror Dawlish, just returning from the Dursley's reported, "We would, except that he caught a bad case of death. Suicide, poor man. He must have decided he was too evil to live. He was found under his auto when I was sent to fetch him for questioning. Woke the wife and she knew nothing of the matter. We kept her in the dark as to the husband's death, and asked about her nephew.

"She was told that someone was found under the car after the child had been left there. Do you know what she said? Serves him right for being a freak! She thought the child was dead and was glad of it." Dawlish shook his head. "I wanted to, but I had nothing to arrest her for. She now has to deal with the muggle authorities over her husband's situation."

Sirius had to be held back by Greengrass, though he did get one punch in. "This is who you were going to leave Harry with? They would have happily killed a toddler for the crime of having magical parents!"

Dumbledore did look a bit chagrined. Apparently, the child's death was not what was desired here. But he was not giving up. "Where is Harry now? With Vernon dead, Petunia can be reasoned with…"

Head Auror Bones cast a silencing charm on Dumbledore before any of the Blacks could kill him.

"Yes, I see he still wants to continue to try to kidnap Harry Potter. This will have to be sorted out in the Wizengamot. For now, go home, rest. As we're sharing a nursemaid until the children are at least two, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of each other." The woman looked exhausted.

"Amelia, please. Bellatrix came home earlier tonight. She finally broke out of her husband's imperius curse. She loved James Potter so much, she just couldn't attack her cousin. He's been controlling her with their marriage vows. Now, she's free. She'll confess, as she feels horrible for the amount of suffering she's caused. But other than self defense, she's killed no magicals. Unfortunately, she has killed several muggles, while under the imperius. She wasn't in her right mind. She's willing to go to Azkaban for it, as she feels she should have been stronger."

Head Auror Bones shook her head, "No one is going to send a pureblood witch to prison for killing a muggle. Too many in the Wizengamot look at it as pest control. I don't, but still. I'll question her myself soon. You wanted to clear the air sooner than later. I thank you for that."

"I'm going to move Bella to my home at Blackmoor Keep. Dumbledore is a half-blood but powerful. When you get to questioning under veritaserum, please ask him about Dorea's death. He was there. Why didn't he help protect my sister and her husband?"

Scribbling notes to herself, Amelia shook her head. Her world went upside down this night..

The supposedly evil Lord Black was responsible for rescuing her only living blood relative! The Leader of the Light had nearly gotten her killed. With Gabby being imprisoned as she was, it would have been too late without his servants watching the situation. That was another charge against him. Lord Black had not set the trap, but was collecting evidence against an enemy of his House!

Regardless of her world view, she was just grateful that her Susie was safe.

Albus Dumbledore made several enemies that day. Not the least of which was Sirius Black.

On the way out of the Ministry, Sirius offered his arm to Gabby. She had finished filing her own complaint against Dumbledore with her grandfather.

"Is Madam Duncan's room ready, Grandfather? If not, she can have my quarters, and I'll sleep on the couch."

"You are most kind, Heir Black, but I couldn't discommode you." Gabby smiled warmly at him.

Lord Black looked at the two of them, "You are being generous, grandson. I thought at first you were offering to share your bed with this most proper lady."

"Never! I would never offer such until we were properly wed." Sirius looked at Arcturus intently, looking for signs of disapproval.

The woman was a pureblood, and had proven rather clever tonight. His brief nod spoke volumes. And Sirius wasn't the only one there to note it.

The morning newspaper was accompanied by several letters. One of which was signed 'Bellatrix Black'.

"Someone lost their husband last night." Alice mused. "No, several someones did." She continued down, and stood, her chair clattered to the floor. Her entire demeanor changed, "Frank! How awful! Our friends are gone! The Potters! And we're warned against an attack. Surely Barty wouldn't! He's your cousin!"

"As opposed to the other cousins, and brothers and sisters who've been killing each other during this madness?" Frank dropped his fork before he took up the letter. He closed his eyes in pain. James! He'd stepped down as an auror to protect his family. The newspaper clearly wasn't printing or didn't know about the Potters yet. There would likely be a special edition of the paper tonight.

Then Frank saw the letter addressed to him. "Darling, I know that Dumbledore asked us to stay hidden with Neville. But this? Harry was nearly killed not once, but twice last night. Dumbledore meant to leave Harry with Lily's sister. Her husband was going to kill him with a car! Sirius thinks that accidental magic killed the husband when he returned.

"Darling! Harry's your godson! Why would Dumbledore kidnap the child, literally out of his godfather's arms to deliver him to a muggle when he has us?" Frank queried worriedly. "Let's go to Mother's rooms and talk with her. I don't like this."

The floo flared, and Clive came in to ask if they would receive Master Auror Moody who was quickly invited in and offered breakfast.

"I came to talk to you about last night. I don't know how to tell ya…"

"Sirius wrote, informing us of the attack. He asked to see us later today. We'll be grieving soon, but it still hasn't hit me. And we received a warning, too." Alice shared the letter.

Before Moody could finish his tea, the wards pinged.

"Clive! Take Neville! Grab Mother and take her to the safe room, and lock yourself in with them."

Alastor chuckled, tapping his badge, "Augusta missing out on a battle? She'll be most…distraught."

"With James gone, she has to be kept safe." Alice demanded. "Shall we go greet our guests?"

"The wards fell! It has to be Barty out there!" Frank girded himself. Clearly, if he was attacking, then he was an enemy.

"I'll take care of Crouch, you take the others." Alice offered, pulling on her invisibility cloak that had a specialized rune where Frank could see her outline but no one else besides him and Moody could.

He nodded, pulling on his own similar cloak, and the three headed into battle.

Ministry offices, November 1st

Director of the DMLE, Barty Crouch, Senior, had not come in the night before. With his wife's illness, his house-elf was told not to bother him with Ministry business before eight o'clock in the morning.

She would be getting clothes the moment his wife passed away, which sadly would be soon. But the pest was her elf.

His temper was not improved with the lack of food; he'd read the first of several urgent summonses to the Ministry from the night before and had left home without so much as a cup of tea.

He was embarrassed to be so behind on some very important events. Head Auror Bones looked terrible, but he remembered bad nights when Junior was a toddler. Oh, to have those halcyon days back.

As though thinking of his sulking, skulking son, he appeared. Alas, he was with Auror Moody. Why, oh why, was this so public? And why couldn't this be done with any other auror?

"What is the meaning of this?" Crouch demanded. He'd had suspicions for some time, but for the sake of his wife had ignored them.

"Director Crouch? I was having breakfast with my partner, Frank Longbottom. While there, a band of Death Eaters attacked. As there were women and children inside, I authorized lethal force. I was able to stun one of the miscreants and portkeyed him to a holding cell. No one was more surprised than myself that it was your son. He's been there, in holding, for more than an hour. It was really him, no polyjuice was used." Moody was trying to maintain a stoic demeanor, but this young man? Not that his family was close with the Crouches. But the Director's son?

The man looked ready to explode and glared equally at auror and suspect.

Minister Bagnold came in just then. "So it's true. Dumbledore showed up in my office just now since he couldn't get a hold of you, Barty, at home. He wanted me to track you down, and is waiting for us in my office."

Alice came limping in just then, Frank supporting her. "We've got our two prisoners in the cells and came to support Moody."

Crouch bent a little, "Aurors! You're hurt. Get to Saint Mungos and then report."

Alice shook her head, "No! Someone has betrayed us. We've been safe for months. I have my own ideas on how that happened." Her glare to Augusta's nephew landed without anyone combusting spontaneously. It was almost as if she took someone attacking her home - personally.

Frank also glared at his cousin but kept his own council. Millicent looked as though she wanted to sweep all of this under the rug. Yet again. This time, it wasn't powerless muggles or even a muggleborn targeted. Longbottoms were socially superior to House Crouch.

Head Auror Bones was not intimidated by this woman in the least. She was a good peace-time Minister, but should have stepped down before this.

"Minister? Were you aware that Dumbledore is facing criminal charges? One of which is kidnapping? Another interference with a Great House?"

Director Crouch bristled, "I released him on his own recognisance until I had time to go over the evidence. Albus Dumbledore has been leader of the Light for thirty and five years."

Moody had enough. He handed over the chain to Junior to Auror Shackelbolt. "Barty Crouch, Senior. I accuse you of interference in a criminal investigation and negligence. Should Dumbeldore escape, you will face even worse charges."

Head Auror Bones stood and repeated his words exactly. They needed two Senior, and one junior official in order to arrest the head of the DMLE. And if it didn't stick, they would likely never be able to work in the Ministry again.

That was when Director Weasley stood forward. No one had seen him towards the back there. "Barty Crouch, Senior. I accuse you of…"

**OO**

Thankfully, for Barty Senior's good health, Dumbledore was tracked down quickly. They were both put in Ministry holding cells. A team of six aurors had relieved Dumbledore of his wands and many portkeys. He was given a plain prison robe to wear. But what really hurt him was Remus Lupin showing up with a thick runic tome.

"Remus, my dear boy! I'm so glad that you are…"

"Shut it, Albus. That was a neat trick: your letter to send me to the continent days before James and Lily were betrayed. Now I've been hired to track down Pettigrew." Moony never said who had hired him. Sirius was doing some ritual that would help create a tracker for the betrayer. "I'm just here to keep out any animagus. Such pests can get in. Don't want you communing with your spy."

"My dear boy! I don't know what you are talking about!"

Lupin finished his holding runes. No animagus, no phoenix, nothing could get inside that cell now. Once done with his ritual, Padfoot would likely come by to test it. He could legally do that now, as the secret files in the DMLE could now be merged. James' Prongs would be known by all, and that was an accomplishment to be proud of.

Moony met up with Sirius later, and after getting his nose zapped, Padfoot and Lupin went rat hunting.

**OO**

Lord Black looked in on a tired nursemaid. "Let the elves watch over the child. Please, get some rest. I plan to."

Seeing Harry safe, the young woman did, but she napped inside his nursery.

**OO**

Minerva, having received a letter from Moody, had asked Fawkes to help her spirits for the day, and sing to the students. Word was leaking out that Voldemort was gone. She didn't know about that, but wanted to drown Dumbledore in truth serum. He knew more than what he ever said, she was sure. Now arrested?

The deputy was just surprised that she hadn't been arrested. She'd kicked up quite the fuss at the Dursleys, and when Albus wouldn't listen to her, she'd tried to take Harry herself.

That was when she found herself portkeyed back to Hogwarts. Hagrid was looking woeful as well. James had been a favored student, such a bright young man. He wanted to teach someday, and had just begun his apprenticeship with her now that Harry was a bit older.

She sat down, and wrote a letter to the Board of Governors letting them know that after this year, she was done. She was tired of working four jobs, and wanted to go to a different school where she could just teach.

Her letter from Lord Black, governor of the school, asking her for a private interview after Dumbledore's trial was an eye opener.

The Wizengamot wouldn't convene for a few days. Death Eaters were quietly being rounded up.

The killing of muggles would no longer be ignored.

There was a push for equal rights. That bill would be defeated, but Arthur Weasley managed to get one passed that made it murder to kill a muggle. Or goblin. Or any thinking being.

It was a start.

**OO**

Six Potter elves showed up later that day at Blackmoor Keep. Arcturus was happy, but it was Harry himself, just up from a nap who was most pleased.

"Livy! Livy! Mummy! Where's Mummy?" Harry demanded.

The child was recovering from a ritual, but it had two fold tasks. One was to remove the bit of darkness in his forehead and heal him. The second was to use his blood to track down his betrayers.

"Mummy gone to Avalon." Livy shared sadly.

"Harry want Avalon. Now!" The child had been told he would get to go there eventually. But how to explain it? They would try again, but it would take time.

"Want pears or apples?" Livy distracted the tot with a snack, holding up two ripe fruits. Harry patted the pear.

Gabby showed up from the Bones just then. A schedule was set up, and while it meant a bit more flooing, she would be able to attend both child's needs. Susie would turn two on April 5th, and Gabby would be employed by the Black family exclusively as Harry's nanny from that point.

Gabby had worried about what she was going to do past April, as her contract was limited. Now, she had a contract to work for the Blacks until Harry reached age twenty one! With a comfortable salary. She didn't have to keep the farm, either. She never wanted to return there. Lord Black's people would get it ready to sell for her, and she would live in Blackmoor Keep. It was a very pleasant job.

As she requested a snack for herself, and water, the young witch rested. Harry was playing with some very old blocks.

"Pink!" Harry shouted, playing the color game that she'd seen him play with his godfather earlier.

"I do think it's supposed to be red, my young friend. Alas, the color has faded. Maybe we could get Heir Black to renew them."

"Red?" Harry looked at the block dubiously and decided for himself. "Pink"

Gabby took her wand, picking up a plain block. She painted one side pink and another red.

"Pink, red" In turn she called.

Harry looked at his block, and suddenly it was as pink as her pink, on all sides. "PINK!"

The woman smiled and clapped. Magic so young!

She just hoped when this story was repeated in the family, they would choose a different color for the young wizard to have painted.

Sirius Black was standing slightly behind Remus Lupin as they waited their turn. Others were taking up the Ministry offer to turn in marked Death Eaters. As long as they were still alive. No one wanted a slaughter to start again.

"Who are you bringing in?" The busy officer asked. The bound wizard was stunned, and in good shape. So young. Such a waste.

"Peter Pettigew." Remus shared, his eyes amber in anger.

"Oh, I have a special note on him. Ministry bounty of a thousand, not a bad day's work. But take this to Gringotts sir. The family wants to thank you for helping put this all behind them." The man gave him a separate draft for twenty-five thousand galleons.

Remus waited until they were nearly to the bank. "I can't! This is too much! I just can't!"

"Look. I really want you to buy that farm just south of us. There's some nice woods in between. We ward it, and we have a place to run and keep Harry out of trouble when he's older."

"Wasn't that the old sheep farm? There's still a few sheep on it." Lupin drooled just a bit.

"We can get more." Sirius offered. "We need to hurry. Gabby is very strict about bedtime, so if we want to see Prongslet, we have to leg it."

"Gabby, huh? Nice girl." Remus then lost his smile, "Are we going to talk about Dumbledore?" Remus asked. He'd seen memories of the knut, and knew that Amelia Bones had it for evidence.

"Not yet. Not yet." Sirius' eyes clouded. He'd been here at Gringotts too much lately. The elves had done a good job getting everything out of the cottage before looters could get much more than a bit of dust from built-in shelves. Even the secret compartment over the fireplace with the extra wands had been checked.

Remus opened up his new account, and the pair were joined by Bellatrix just leaving the bank.

"Everything alright Miss Black?" Remus asked.

Sirius scoffed, "Bellatrix Black? May I introduce my uncouth friend Remus Lupin. He's a sheep farmer. Owns the patch just next door."

"Oh really? I saw the greenhouse yesterday. I'd be happy to help." Bella offered. She was good with flora.

"Really? I've got all black thumbs when it comes to plants, but I do well with magical creatures. I'm thinking of adding a few. You know, to raise and sell?"

Bellatrix laughed, "That sounds like a good business. Your father was Lyle Lupin? And his father also sat in the Wizengamot. I do hope that you will help my cousin. They dropped International and Domestic Affairs when I was a fifth year. It might have been a bit dry, but very useful."

"You saw me in the library? I am working on a little project." Remus admitted.

"Yes, his second mastery, this humble dog." Sirius jibed.

"Wolf, surely." Bella purred.

Was she trying to say she knew and didn't care? If so, oh my. And he was a pureblood, if a damaged one.

"Well, I do hope we can discuss International and Domestic Affairs sometime, Miss Black." With a bow over her hand, Lupin took his leave. He had to make a quick survey of his new property. A place of his own! A legal way to make money that no one would question! And all because he helped truly end the Dark Lord even if it was disguised as a bounty on Pettigrew.

Day One, Wizengamot trials

There was more than one trial going on that day. Before they started, a bill was introduced that suggested that if someone were in service to a half-blood, they couldn't presume to refuse Veritaserum. A representative of the Crown was there. No direct questions could be asked that would implicate that person in a crime. But if they refused to say they were innocent when others claimed they were there at an attack? It was a strike against them.

Scores of people were accepting lesser penalties by pleading guilty. Some of those who had knowingly committed murder, and had resources, left the country.

Some, like the Malfoys, thought they would be fine. They had heard, through the grapevine, that a suitable 'donation' would buy a pardon. Or no trial at all.

They didn't know there was a small underground group responsible for that rumor. Nor was Bellatrix' name mentioned. She was free, walking around, seen shopping with her sister. She wasn't noticed though, not really.

Once the final cleansing ritual was done, Bellatrix' black hair with the blonde stripe had changed. She was now just as blonde as Narcissa. As blonde as Andromeda used to be.

The day of reckoning was coming. Dumbledore still refused to admit any wrongdoing. Barty Senior was still in custody as well.

Sirius and Remus were doing everything they could: Their specialists were on hand and had been vetted by Moody and Bones.

Tomorrow. The big trials were tomorrow. It was a very good thing that the dark lord was really dead.

The minions were all taken care of by the end of the day. The toll of evidence against others was overwhelming.

**OO**

Abraxas Malfoy was very upset. He had nearly died of Dragon Pox, in fact, there were still rumors he had.

And now, if he didn't find it, he would soon be dead. The Dark Lord wasn't forgiving when it came to his little trinkets. It had to be somewhere!

"Narcissa! Attend me, woman!" the dark wizard shouted.

With her father-in-law stepping down to allow Lucius to play politics while he was in his sick bed, the son gained the father's title. Thus Lucius' wife became the lady of the house who did not respond to anyone shouting at her.

"Lucius, you ridiculous sack of rotting flesh! Get your female in here and answer me! Where is it? Where is it?" The man started coughing again. Lucius was not going to summon a healer for him. Stupid man.

Narcissa had followed Lucius instructions in dealing with her family. As a result, her vault was confiscated. The Malfoys were not poor, exactly, but they were no longer 'honored clients' whereas Lord Black and his people were treated like royalty within Gringotts.

Well, not after tomorrow! Sirius Black would be sent to prison, and their son would soon be Heir.

Lucius started to grab Narcissa's arm. She pulled her wand. "Don't! Never man-handle me. I know precisely what he's looking for. I'm glad it's gone. When you pull your stunt tomorrow, it will be back in our hands."

"What do you mean?" Lucius demanded.

"The Master's diary. It was in his study. I got a warning from a friend. Moody was conducting raids on all of the known marked followers. I couldn't let him get it!" Narcissa explained. "I hid it in my vault. This was months ago! It shouldn't have been taken!"

Lucius started to swear. But she was right. If it was labeled as a Black vault, they would have access to it after tomorrow. Why deal with his father's bleatings over it?

Lucius walked over to his father's day room on the ground floor.

"Father! Shut it! It's safe, as you have been told. It will be used at the proper time, as you've been told. The arithmancy doesn't change. Lord Nott has checked, our good friend Gruella Parkinson, a renowned Arithmancer has checked. My own lovely wife, and she is a lady, has double checked. No sooner than nine and three quarters years, or we'll banish the Dark Lord forever into the ether. That is not what anyone wants."

"But it's missing." The old man argued.

"No, it's not. It's just in hiding so no one from the Ministry can take it." Lucius shared. Again.

There was a cry of a toddler - Draco wasn't getting his way.

On her way up to the nursery, she compared her son's and his grandsire's noises with the albino peacocks on the grounds.

How did she ever become ensnared with these people? She had wanted to go home, but insisted on having Andromeda removed before she would. Her grandfather hadn't given in. She was sure he cared more for her. That he'd come to her with his fancy coach to escort her home.

Too late, too late, too late. She had no hopes that the morrow would bring anything but disaster to her family, Lucius' plans being no more than pathetic daydreams.

But what could she do?

**OO**

The second day of trials started with some of the more minor characters. Mrs Pettigrew had been sent to the hospital when hearing her son was facing the death penalty. He'd been found posing as a pet for a few days.

Sirius' thoughts went to that time.

Flashback

The lad holding him was a bit traumatized with Sirius Black showing up, but the kindly animagus gifted him with enough money for a nice pet for him and his older siblings. He gave gold to the Weasley matron for small treats for the younger ones.

The Weasleys might be poor, but they were good people.

Molly did ask him a question while he'd been there. "There's all sorts of rumors running around about the Potters. That James and Lily set a trap for the dark one, but the timing was off, and accidentally blew them all up."

"Ma'am? It's very painful for me to talk about. I count James and Lily as defeating that madman. Harry survived somehow, and I am grateful. I can't talk about anything more. Not until after Dumbledore's trial. You'll be invited to the funeral for James and Lily, of course."

"My husband thinks Albus…" Molly looked away, tears in her eyes.

"It's hard to lose someone, and I have. I lost a mentor, someone that I counted upon. I will share a glass of remembrance with you in future. Not today or even tomorrow. Someday." Sirius promised.

Molly nodded and squeezed his hand. The Black Heir raised it to his lips to a chorus of 'ewws' from the children.

End Flashback

Sirius saw the matron up in the gallery. Of course she had to come. Her husband's position gave her a prime spot as well. No doubt the Weasley brood was being watched by grandparents.

Tension in the gallery mounted. Padfoot wished he could have someone more than his grandfather's man-at-arms with him.

If all went well, Sirius planned on finding out who Gabby's people were; Start the formal negotiation for courting.

He wore mourning robes of deepest black with a cockade that had James and Lily's picture. Unseen by most, was a small muggle plastic rat that he'd shrunk. Wormtail was lost to him forever in his betrayal. But he mourned the loss of what he had been to them.

His trial was very short. Unlike other guilty parties, Pettigrew had not been given the right to a private pleading. This was going to be rough.

**OO**

"Do you understand that you can obtain a bit of mercy if you now declare any parties to your guilt under veritaserum?" The prosecutor asked.

"I consent, and beg the court for mercy. I was so scared for my life!" Pettigrew stated.

And so began a tale of fear and deceit. Then came a twist.

"Albus Dumbledore approached me. He knew that I was the Potter secret-keeper. He explained that for the good of this world, they had to die. I didn't want to betray my friends. He made it sound…so reasonable."

Lord Black stood and was recognized, "Has the boy been checked for compulsions? I ask as I know others have been so compelled."

"Yes, and the result was negative. Pettigrew, other than this greater good, were you offered anything else?" the prosecution asked.

"Yes!" Peter hissed, trying to stay silent. "I was to be given a share of the Potter properties after Dumbledore made himself Regent."

"And how would he do that with Heir Black still alive? Were you to kill him too?"

"No, I was to frame him for murder, and escape in my animagus form. Then, I was to go to the Weasleys. I could keep an eye on things there for him. I also had access to Malfoy manor, and was to keep an eye on the Dark Lord's top lieutenant. Lucius Malfoy."

"Are you claiming that Lord Malfoy is a marked Death Eater?" the prosecutor asked.

"I am. I gave a list, willingly, to the auror questioning me. I hid nothing, not even my guilt. I killed my friends, all because I wanted the killing to stop. I'm so sorry James! I'm sorry, Evans! Please, please forgive me!"

While Pettigrew addressed Avalon, a pair of aurors strode up the steps to the Malfoy seat. "Sir? If you would please come with us?"

Lucius had two choices; he could try to fight his way out, or surrender quietly and hope that the officials he had bribed stayed bribed.

**OO**

In a situation like this, the Unspeakables had a clear duty. The Minister was taken into custody, very quietly. She was getting a little forgetful, now that she was past a hundred.

Her ledger of just who had paid her might be in code, but not an overly difficult one for Croaker's department to break.

As such, they were proceeding apace, from the mere horrific to the stuff of nightmares. The gallery had to be cleared more than once for cleanup. After that, everyone was told to attend at their own risk. Any more janitorial services would be billed out.

That stopped most of the problems in the gallery. Some of the Death Eaters were downright bragging. That was when the first death penalty was levied. Something that hadn't been done in years. Not to a pureblood.

The Crown officer wanted to object but couldn't. He thought of it as protection of the nation to rid the world of these people who saw what they did as right and justified just because their victims were powerless.

Even the most staunch muggle-hater in the Wizengamot started to see that their world had to change.

The last three trials were Bagnold, Crouch and Dumbledore with the lady going first.

She had been shown all of the evidence, and didn't try to plead anything but guilty. "I just wanted us to go forward from this awful time, and put the past behind us. I saw the money given to me as gifts from grateful families. I accept my lifelong banishment to my home as Just. I will have Mr Crouch's house-elf to care for me, but no other companion. I am guilty, and I am sorry that I thought that what I was doing was right."

At her age, not being allowed hardly any visits? Being kept from society? It was rather a cruel punishment. The judges wound up allowing her letters to her family, but they would be screened, and an annual short visit on her daughter's birthday with her family. It was viewed as a good compromise.

Barty Crouch was nothing like his son. Junior had spouted Dark Lord vitriol and was crying when he was told to look at his arm. The boy had screamed when he saw the Dark Mark truly gone.

It was said that the Unspeakables had found a way to finish the Dark Lord, and had banished him which was untrue. Moody, Heir Black and Remus Lupin had done most of the work, with Albus Dumbledore providing very unhelpful and obstructive "aid". They succeeded anyway.

Crouch admitted to suspecting his son was a Death Eater, and had done everything he could to preserve pureblood life. Even if it meant allowing muggles and muggleborns to die. He had ignored the floo problems (Edgecombe long before being one of the ones through the veil for her actions.) He had promoted a younger, less experienced pureblood witch to Head Auror when it should have been Master Auror Moody's spot, or so he claimed.

Many judges called that statement to be stricken as the man condemned to death was trying to foment controversy in the surviving department.

Not a single office was free of Death Eaters except Arthur Weasley's. He was asked how he did it. The simple answer of an oath to do no harm to a muggle except in self-defense was such an obvious solution.

The muggle queen had demanded a new oath of office for each person remaining in the Ministry. And a harsher one for anyone serving in the Wizengamot. Her cousin, a Military officer, who was nearly powerful enough to attend Hogwarts, came then and distributed the oath.

The dark faction was already decimated. Lord Nott had fled the country, as had a few others. More had been captured. Armed military men, pure muggles, flooded into the chamber to stand guard over the oath taking. Lord Black liked it not at all, even though the oath he took made sense.

Sirius Black took the oath as Regent Potter. He'd be voting for Harry until he was of age. He shared a look as Frank Longbottom took his oath. To maintain the laws of the country. Sustain the legal and lawful government. No wonder the muggles hadn't complained about the death penalty for the worst of the monsters - they were traitors to the Crown!

The newly formed Wizengamot barely had a quorum. Many officers of the court would normally abstain, but had been encouraged to appoint proxies. Amelia Bones had a voting proxy in Lord Abbot's daughter-in-law, Rebecca. Lord Black appointed Andromeda to vote the Malfoy seat until their legal troubles were settled.

The military men stayed in place. ICW hit wizards joined them, along with the new Supreme Council that replaced the position of Supreme Mugwump. None of them looked happy to be there; this was no revenge for anyone.

Merely cleaning house, and removing as much rubbish as possible.

There was going to be a thorough cleanse of the laws after this, but the most dangerous criminal of the war, aside from Tom Riddle, was about to be tried.

**OO**

Gabby Duncan looked at the letter. Oh dear, this had a timed delivery, and the owl was early. Should she open it? Could she wait?

Choosing to be good, she put the letter aside. She was at Bones Manor right then. She had gotten permission to bring Harry over to the heavily warded manor. Considering that anyone who had done anything more than petty theft was in Azkaban right then, she thought she was rather safe.

She had received a letter the day before blaming Gabby for the breakup between some pureblood princess and Heir Black! Considering that Sirius had denied to his grandfather just the other day of any courtship being pursued, it was chalked up to being nothing but the daydream of this witch. Who wouldn't want to date the future Lord Black? He was powerful, kind, handsome, had lovely wavy dark hair, and his eyes! The silvery blue of a stormy sea. One could get lost in them.

Then Susan squeaked. Uh oh! Susan had picked up her own blocks. Completely uncolored.

"Where red?" Harry asked.

Susan, not as advanced about colors, looked confused.

"Where red?" Harry demanded. "Pink? Green? Want colors! Want colors now!" He listed off a few more.

**OO**

Dumbledore's plain robes offended him. They really did. As he walked by Sirius, who was going to be a witness, he could swear he heard a child's voice. He had never caught Sirius with his mirror before. Gabby had the other in case of emergency, but he was hoping to hear her honest feelings about the letter. Putting it aside like that? Honesty, patience. Good characteristics in a mate. Very good.

The animagus had to stifle a laugh. The prank worked! Color changing robes keyed to Harry's voice. They were cycling red, pink, green, brown, black. Chompers was interpreted as chartreuse, and a lovely shade at that.

But the prank ended as quickly as it started. The glare from Amelia was clear; this was important business. No time for pranks.

**OO**

"Do you know what this is, Mr Dumbledore?" One of the ICW enchanters was asking questions.

This was no time to be cute. He held up a knut in a gloved hand. The enhanced potion he had been forced to take wouldn't allow lies, but he could remain silent.

Dumbledore wisely said nothing.

"Let me explain it to the people listening." How did they know so much? Of course Hagrid had given it to Black as ordered. Why had the Dursleys been so beastly? Oh. the curse had been broken around others. Yes, bits of magic likely did spread and attach themselves. Others looked for revenge as well.

He had a very good reason. It just sounded…weak to his ear.

"I was fighting a terrible war with every weapon I had!" Dumbledore shouted.

"Except for one little problem, Dumbledore. You knew this Voldemort, Tom Morvolo Riddle wasn't quite dead. What steps did you take to end this dark lord? I mean direct steps after James and Lily died. We already know about your two spies and what you did to them."

Severus had confessed early. He had heard there was going to be an attack, and tried to warn Albus. The Fidelius wasn't perfect. Lily had been seen in Godric's Hollow. The charm had fallen early in the strike; the secret keeper attacking the house made it crash rather dramatically. Severus had fought from the shadows. He admitted to killing both Rabastan and his brother Rodolphus Lestrange. He would have done more, but it was too late. Lily was dead.

He had turned himself in that night, and taken a plea deal. He was given a five thousand galleon bounty on the people he had taken out, and was banished from Britain for no more than five years. He had to swear not to kill any muggles except in self-defense. He got a much better deal than Lucius did. Of course, Lucius had bribed ministry officials and planned attacks. And supported the overthrow of the rightful government.

Dumbledore was most put out to find out that his rat was dead, and his potions master was heading east somewhere. He knew not where.

It was the knut that was Dumbledore's undoing.

If he had placed Harry to await further legal fallout, he would have been forgiven. He might have been forgiven even if the child had been killed by the muggles. But taking him away from his godfather who was the second person there after the attack didn't win Dumbledore any compassion.

There wasn't enough proof to convict him of betraying Charlus and Dorea Potter. Peter couldn't remember ever being there – his memory had been erased. But Dumbledore was convicted of attempted line theft, kidnapping, plotting to overthrow the rightful government (People were not convinced that Dumbledore was really against Riddle), and casting an unforgivable.

The knut was a variation of the imperius curse. Everyone but Dumbeldore could see that he planned ill for Sirius, so the Black Heir would be sent to prison. Acting in a way contrary to his natural and normal actions as an active auror.

Dumbledore was given a choice - death by the portal, or life in Azkaban. Many of his friends couldn't believe that he would act the way he did.

Others, like Moody, were kicking themselves for not seeing it earlier.

The same wards that Remus Lupin put on Dumbledore's holding cell were put on his cell on the island prison. And he was kept away from other people. Magic suppression wards were placed in his clothing and around his wrists.

But everything had been explained to the poor phoenix, and he never tried to help Albus escape. Though he did try to escape. And try. And try again.

The worst dark lord of their time would shortly pass away in prison. Mourned only by those who refused to believe the truth of the evidence, and thought he had been martyred.

**OO**

Gabby couldn't wait any longer. She tore open the letter.

"To Madam Gabrielle Duncan. It would give me great honor if I would be allowed to enter negotiations for your hand in marriage."

"WHAT? Marriage? Not courtship? Doesn't he want to get to know me?" The letter was most disconcerting. Then she realized the truth.

Sirius was likely in love with someone he couldn't be with. How sad. But he wanted a good mother for Harry.

"How I wanted a chance of love. What should I do?" Gabby paced. Harry and Susan were napping in side by side cots. Pictures of which were just adorable.

That nasty Rita person had tried to interview Sirius, and called Harry the Boy-Who-Lived. She got a very stern lecture on just how that sounded. First off, the rumors that she had tried to start about a baby defeating the Dark Lord were patently, provably, false. The Unspeakables were looking for the ritual that would allow them to talk to Lily Potter and ask her what she had done. It was clearly witch's magic. Nothing of James, or even Harry, was left in the nursery of the ruined cottage.

Gabby looked down on the lad. As much as her heart ached for her daughter, these little ones helped. She wanted her own little girl back, but did she want another child of her own?

"Of course I want another child! The war is over. Susan's parents, Harry's parents. Sirius and his friends. They bought peace with their heart's and sometimes life's blood.

Gabby thought about the wizards she knew anywhere close to her age. She didn't want to marry any of them. And it wasn't just the money either. She wouldn't say that knowing she'd live in Blackmoor Keep for the rest of her life didn't appeal. It was a lovely home. She already had a contract to work there. Oh, how kind of them! To give her security so she could choose for herself.

"There's room for a garden. And we could have horses here. And I do like Sirius. That's a much better basis than being asked to, no, let's be honest, forced to marry someone because her father liked them and wanted closer bonds. Do I want courting? Yes, but this is understandable. He doesn't have a year and a day to waste.

"He's been under a horrible strain, and he hasn't drank too much or hit any house-elves. He clearly doesn't like that one, Kreacher? But I don't know the history there. I'll accept his suit. Then he can face Grandda. Oh, he was so mad at Father for my first marriage. I hope he approves of this one."

Decided, the lovely Gabrielle pulled out her book to read, completely unaware that Sirius had heard each and every word.

**OO**

"How did you do it? The color thing?" Arcturus asked but was interrupted by Dumbledore walking by.

"You've doomed us all. Tom will be back. And instead of a child forged in the fires of adversity and strife, we'll have a tool just as weak and worthless as his father!" Albus spat.

Sirius was ready for this, "James? Weak and worthless? Never! You never talk about Lily's brilliance either. Only Flitwick or McGonagall does. You're just as prejudiced as the old guard. Go away, Albus, my dear old man. Tom Marvolo Riddle isn't coming back."

Military men formed up around Dumbledore. They were wearing hearing protection, and most were armed with both wands and rifles. Not a few of the people in the Wizengamot noticed how the guards were armed.

Amos Diggory, acting Minister until the January ballot, was reading the advisory just handed to him by the Queen's wizard.

"No laws that allow discrimination? Brilliant! If I get voted in, I'll want Arthur in charge of Muggle interactions. Keeping the statute was nearly impossible with Riddle running around! Do you think that Albus wanted it to fail?" Diggory asked.

The Queen's wizard was a serious man, "I think so, sir. I truly do. We've seen his like during World War II. Dumbledore was focused on his version of the world. What he thought the world should be. It blinded him to the fallacy of his own actions. And how they would affect the world. You're going to need help up at the school, and in your Ministry."

The man who would be voted the next Minister answered, "With Dumbledore's meddling under control? It will get better. It has to."

**OO**

Hermione Granger, more than a bit scarred from her first combat, pulled a hidden Harry Potter into an embrace under his cloak.

"You did good, Potter."

"We did good Potter. Granger. Wife."

"Well, now that the true Dark Lord is defeated, with Dumbledore in prison, what do we do next?"

"We could go check on Luna. Maybe add some unnoticed safety wards for her mother's experiments?"

"You've saved Sirius and Remus, and given them clues to destroy the horcruxes. They now have a bright future. The Hallows are out of the picture. Andromeda and Tonks are restored to the family. Lucius and his father tossed through the Veil, and will never plot against anyone again. The Ministry will sell everything the Malfoys owned, and set aside a small vault for Draco's schooling. Narcissa will have to work. Death Eaters will never ride again. No one will have to suffer through Snape's potions classes, and hopefully he can have a better life out from under Dumble's thumb."

Harry gave her the Husband Look #3, "Please don't tell me you want to give Narcissa Malfoy any money? She lied to our Dark Lord. Big deal! She allowed Luna to be tortured by her son for months! She allowed you…"

"Hush now, Husband. That future doesn't exist here. And we have a mission to save others.

Harry let it go, "Did you see him? Sirius? And I heard baby me!"

"Oh! So you did the color changing. That makes more sense than accidental magic going so far." Hermione kissed Harry's cheek. "It was adorable."

"Wanna peek in on the Granger's again? See Mini-Mione. So cute!" Harry offered.

"Let's go visit Ron. Do you think that he and Harry will be friends?" Hermione asked.

"I hope so. Arthur already has an important job, and will be high up in the Ministry. Who is this Gabby person though?" Harry asked. "Will she be a good Mum? Of course, Bellatrix in this world would be better than Petunia."

"Just you wait. Let's go visit Luna for a time. Then we can watch Sirius going bride shopping."

The pair, dedicated Travelers, leaping from one dimension to another, helping to save the World one time-line at a time, shared a sweet kiss. And traveled.

**OO**

The best reception room at Gringotts had been prepared. Elf wine, human canapes. Someone had tried to sneak in conde lumbra on the high powered clients coming.

If Goldrub ever found them, they'd be hunting their ears for a time! And then BloodRage, that insolent fool tried to bring in a boar's head. Yes, this was a wedding reception, but they were humans not goblins!

The Black Contingent was early. Sirius had changed from his black mourning robes to dress robes. Also in black. Just without the mourning cockcade. He looked nice.

The bride's family was accompanied by a half-dozen of the Black Watch. Considering that they had not had a chance to battle Death Eaters much, Sirius was glad they were included here. But why? Oh, right. Gabrielle's family was originally from Scotland, even if her mother had married an Englishman.

"Mad-eye? What are you doing here? Oh! Private security I bet. Let me introduce you to my Grandfather Arcturus, Lord Black. You know Remus Lupin, my Second. May I ask what position you hold here?"

"Dinna ye know, lad? This lass is my granddaughter. Put one toe out of line, and I'll have yer guts for garters. Nothing personal. But we've been through a lot. And I won't have you hurt her!"

"I, I…Moody! I have no intention of hurting Madam Duncan. Grandfather? Oh, boy. No. Everyone has someone. Did you know I'm related to Lucius Malfoy by marriage? Well, his spawn now. Just to warn you."

Moody pulled Sirius to a side booth. It was built for this sort of negotiation, and no one could hear anything except Remus. And that's because he learned lip reading.

"What are you really doing here Black? If this is a prank, end it now. I mean it."

"Cards on the table Moody? I just met Gabby. She's smart, honest and kind. She takes great care of Harry. I want more children than just one. You saw how Dumbledore's method of getting children worked out. No, I shouldn't jest on something so close to my heart. I could have lost him. Harry. And I do love my godson.

"Sooner or later, someone will make us go to court over his custody. If I'm married, preferably with another sprog on the way, then I'm not viewed as the creepy bachelor."

"But what about your boyfriend?" Moody demanded.

"I don't know what you're talking about. I have dated all sorts of witches. Ask anyone in Hogwarts. But if I am married, then I am married, and won't cheat with any other witch, not ever. Clear?"

Moody wanted to point out that Marius Greengrass wasn't a witch, but the man would likely try to stay true. His animagus form was a Grim. Not a hounddog.

"You don't love her." Alastor's last volley.

"No, not yet. But she's the mother of my other future children. I'm a Potter by blood adoption. Harry is my first-born. She'll be Lady Black one day. Her children could bear the names of Potter, Black, Peverell. Do you know how many lines Lily is related to? Oh, did I tell you that Harry's a parseltongue? Caught him hissing at a snake. The boy can barely speak English, but he was getting on like a house on fire with a serpent."

"You do know that both Gabby and I were Slytherin."

"Moi? No, I know I didn't know about the lovely lady being in that House. You? I suspected, but didn't know."

"Welcome to the family, Black." The Scot held out his hand.

Sirius took it, "Thank you, Mad-eye. Does this mean you'll consider Harry family too?" Sirius asked.

"O' course. Already do: My lass has adopted him in her heart."

And so Sirius and Gabby were married, and had a housefull. Bellatrix and Remus were married, and had a little girl who was perfectly healthy. And a little boy named Teddie who was also a metamorphmagus like his cousin Dora.

As for Harry and Ron and Hermione? Well, they got along well enough, but in this universe, it was Harry who won the fair maid's heart fair and square.

Their children's hair was cursed forever.

But they all lived happily ever after.

A/N: Story recommend: dunuelos, any of the Lone Traveler stories which inspired the twist to this little ficlet. Our favorite is Dumbledore's Next Great Adventure Part I, which is complete to itself.

My thanks for dunuelos for borrowing his universe for a moment. I seem to have lost track of Luna. I am sure she is around somewhere, no doubt up to no good.
