Hello everyone,
So, some of you might recognize this story, but for those who are new, this is a rewritten verson on my 10-year-old fanfic 'Age of Convexity'. After over 8 years, I have finally gotten back into writing! I was originally going to finish where I left off, but it's been so long, I couldn't remember exactly what I had going on. So, I decided to read it from the beginning. Buuuuuut, then I realized how bad it really was. So, I decided to rewrite it completely. It's still the same story but a lot has been redone and for the better too. The plot is mostly the same, but some key components have been changed. Again, for the better.

Anyways, onto the beginning of 'Age of Aether'

Age of Aether

Prologue

"You cannot defeat me. I AM ETERNAL!" Malefor roared.

With that, Malefor blasted a beam of dark aether at Spyro and Cynder.

At the same time, the two young dragons blasted their beams of aether at Malefor. The three beams collided with each other with great force.

"Just… hang… on…" Spyro said at length.

The three were evenly matched, but the two young dragons where just a little more powerful and shot Malefor's beam right back at him. When it made contact, it blasted him to the center of a crystal in the core of the planet. However, he wasn't giving up just yet, but when he did rise, five dragon spirits rose from the earth and surrounded him.

"What is this?" he asked curiously.

The spirits circled around the large purple dragon for a few seconds. Then, without warning, the five dragon spirits dove towards Malefor and dragged him into the center of the crystal.

"NOOOOOOOOO…" he screamed

As Malefor was pulled completely underground, he fell deeper into the crystal but with no end. However, a few seconds later, a portal of dark aether opened up and he plummeted straight through it. As he fell into the portal, he was teleported into a dark room. It wasn't that big of a fall, but the momentum he carried was enough to send spikes of pain that surged through his body. The room was pure darkness, he couldn't see anything in front of him. Even when his eyes fully adjusted, his vision was still useless, so he just lay there still weak from the defeat and the confusing fall.

He tried to stand but only to succeed into falling flat on his face. He was so weak and dazed from the spiraling portal of dark aether that he was getting nauseous, his world spinning out of control. He tried to shake the stars from his head but only to succeed in making it worse. After several more fails, he decided lay still and wait for his head to recover on its own.

The large purple dragon lay motionless for several long and dizzying minutes, regaining what little strength he could. That last battle took all the strength and power he had, and just trying to raise his head was a challenging struggle. But other than his weakness, Malefor had a strange feeling in the pit of his gut that didn't settle well, a feeling that he wasn't alone.

A voice spoke in the distance.

"So, you failed to do your duty: to bring the end to the world." a deep rumbling voice-deeper than Malefor's-said from somewhere hidden in the shadows.

Malefor then somehow found the strength and his head shot up from the sudden sound, his suspicions confirmed.

"Who's there? Where am I? Show yourself!" Malefor demanded.

"Hahahaha… You mean you don't recognize me? Or where you are?" the deep voice questioned. Malefor started to recognize the voice but still wasn't certain.

All of a sudden, flickers of light began to spark. Torches on the walls and ceiling all ignited and illuminated most parts of the room. The room was large, at least to a dragon of normal stature. To Malefor it was just the right size, however it was also familiar. Too familiar.

The room he was in spanned about fifty meters in diameter and in height. Malefor scanned the room but couldn't identify where the voice came from. He also couldn't recognize where he was located. His vision was still hazy and a clear image couldn't be confirmed. But then, out of the shadows, walked a much larger dragon. The dragon walked its way over to Malefor and into the light. This was when he could recognize the dragon; it was a purple dragon. Malefor then found the strength to stand up.

The dragon was about twice the size of Malefor. He had two horns on top of his head and two on the side. His muscles where twice the size as were his wings. He was a darker purple than Malefor, which gave him an almost black appearance. He had three rows of spikes all down his spine and one row down his tail. His tail blade was a very dark orange that had three razor sharp blades around it. His eyes where blood red with slits. His underbelly and wings were also a dark red-orange, and his claws where jet black and sharp, ready to kill. His last feature was unlike anything else. He was draped in a shadow fog.

"Master Titanis!" Malefor said as he bowed.

"Ah, Malefor. I feared you might not have recognized me," the dark purple dragon spoke at length. "Do you remember where you are now?"

Malefor scanned the room but still didn't find it familiar to him. "I do not recall," he spoke.

Titanis snarled as he began to circle Malefor. "I have summoned you to The Dark Realms." Malefor's eyes widened at the mention of his master's realm, as well as the place he was locked up for so many years.

"Why have you summoned me here? I completed my mission and was finishing off that little rodent who tried desperately to stop it," Malefor spoke, angered by the mention of the young purple dragon. "You didn't let me finish him off."

"You would have never survived!" Titanis roared shaking the whole room. "And do you really think you completed your mission? Because I watched as Spyro sacrificed himself to reverse what you have started, and it looks like he succeeded." Though Titanis had spoken the last sentence in a calm tone, Malefor could see the anger the spread across his muzzle.

"What!? But that's impossible? No one could have stopped the world from falling apart and survive the initial blast! It is not possible!" Malefor said in shock. He then thought of the words his master said. He paused for a moment before speaking again.

"You summoned me here. You prevented me from finishing off Spyro. And because of this, you let Spyro regain stability and restore balance to the world!" Malefor shouted in anger. "I didn't fail! You stopped me-"

He was abruptly cut off by the shadowy figure slashing his chest and slamming him into the wall causing small pieces of stone to rain down all over the floor. Titanis' talons clenched around Malefor's throat. The blow caused three deep gashes in the purple dragon's chest and a few loud pops as bones began to break.

"I summoned you back because you were no match for that purple menace!" Titanis snarled with anger. Malefor cringed in pain and gasped for air as his master's grip slowly grew tighter. "Spyro is far more powerful than you give him credit for. You cannot defeat him." The dark purple dragon released his grip on Malefor and he collapsed to the ground. He winced and gasped for a breath, but filling his lungs only resulted in more pain. He suspected some of his ribs were broken.

Titanis turned his back to the purple dragon before speaking. "I would end your life myself. But alas, I need you for another quest."

The larger purple dragon started to circle Malefor once again. "I need you to show Spyro the true path he must take. The prophecy of our kind and what we are destined to do."

Malefor Struggled to regain control of his breathing through the stabs of pain before he was finally able to mutter out a word. "I've already tried. He is too fixated on what the Guardians have bestowed in his mind."

Titanis froze in position at the mention of the "Guardians". An evil smirk started to form on the large purple dragon's muzzle. A plan was starting to form. Titanis then fixed his attention back to Malefor who was still half way flat on the ground.

"So, Spyro chooses to ignore his sole purpose as a purple dragon." He laughed darkly. "Nothing to worry about, then."

The monstrous dragon walked up to Malefor and lowered his head down to the smaller dragon's level.

"Today is your lucky day." Titanis spoke in a sinister voice. "We are unable to complete our mission with that young peasant in our way. However, if you can release me from The Dark Realms and summon me back into the real world, then we both can complete our destiny." Titanis backed away a few meters from the fallen dragon.

Malefor grunted in pain and waited a few seconds before replying back. "How do you expect me to do that?"

"I need you to bring Spyro here. His power and the celestial moons will be a valid resource in freeing me from this hell and into my former body," Titanis spoke.

"Master, an eclipse from the moons has already passed, and another will not occur in the right location for another millennia," Malefor protested.

Titanis laughed evilly, "There is a far greater power in the near future. One far more potent than the celestial lunar eclipse." Suddenly a dark purple aura formed from the shadow dragon's mind. It grew in size, and Malefor couldn't help but to be drawn to the purple fog. He watch as images of the celestial moons, the solar mass, and a comet, played in this new role and eventually the destruction of the world. This brought an evil smirk across the purple dragon's features.

"What is your plan for me, Master?" Malefor questioned with his evil smile growing larger.

"I need you to rain havoc to the lands, killing everything in sight. I need you to weaken Spyro. To do this, you need to kill everything that he cares for. But do this strategically. We need to hit him where it hurts the most." Titanis spat. "But leave Cynder to me. I have plans to deal with her. Spyro may have shown her a different path but, 'The Terror of the Skies' still runs through her veins and that's something she cannot hide from."

The dark purple aura vanished.

"Now go," Titanis snapped. "I will help you along the way. And when the time is right, bring Spyro here."

After that, Malefor stood back up on all fours, ignoring the pain from his chest. The purple dragon slowly walked up to Titanis and spoke, "Yes Master," then continued to the doorway where a portal of pure convexity opened up in a swirling pattern.

"Don't come back until you have Spyro. I can take care of the rest once we have him," the dark purple dragon spoke without looking back at Malefor while he departed. Malefor entered the portal and was taken back to the world he once tried to destroy.

"Spyro I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry," Cynder said as she held her head in shame.

"Don't be, it's over now," Spyro replied.

"So this is it?" Cynder questioned.

"Spyro," the purple dragon heard a familiar voice say in his head. "As a dragon dies, he does not truly leave this world. He binds itself with nature, offering hope for the future." After Ignitus' spirit faded, Spyro then knew what had to be done.

"I know what I need to do. Just get out of here, Cynder."

"No, Spyro, you don't need to do anything. Let's just go," Cynder said firmly.

"Where, Cynder? There'll be nothing left. The world is breaking apart, but I think I can stop it. I think I'm meant to," Spyro said in a resigned tone, knowing that what he was about to do would end his life.

"Then I'm with you," Cynder said. The black dragoness knew what was going to happen. All those years of war, all those lives lost, and even now that it was over they still might lose everything. Cynder knew Spyro had the strength to do it, but didn't know if they would be able to see the new age. Even though they where most likely not going to make it, she gave a weak smile and was ready to die with the one she trusted the most.

Once said, Spyro gave a weak smile back and then gathered all of his strength and focused his power. He reared up to his hind legs and then started to float a little off the ground. He glowed bright purple as a convexity aura flowed around him. He was just about to release it when Cynder said the three words he has been waiting to hear for a long time.

"I love you."

Cynder's last words echoed through the center of the earth as both were going in peace.

There was a tremendous burst of power, and the purple glow of aether surrounded the huge planet and slowly pulled it back together.

01/01/0000

Back in the Ruins of Warfang, The Guardians, all the moles, Sparx and the cheetah tribe all were shocked when they realized they were still alive. Therefore, as curious as they were, they all left the safety of the underground tunnel to see what was happening on the surface.

As they reached the mouth of the cave, preparing to see the worst, they were completely dumbstruck at what they saw. They were all expecting to see everything engulfed in fire with the earth beneath them crumbling before their eyes. They feared they would be left gasping for air as the last bit of oxygen was sucked into space and lost forever, hearing the screams of thousands of lives just disintegrating right before them. They braced for the realization that the whole surface of the world would slowly turn into hot, fiery, molten rock as it flew into space. However, they didn't see any of that. What they saw was a beautiful sunset on the horizon, the remaining chunks of earth floating back together, and on top of the chunks were lush patches of soft green grass, tall trees, and magnificent flowers, the sign of new life. It was truly the best thing they had seen in their whole lives: the beginning of a new age.

"Wow…" That was all everyone could say. The sight was just breathtaking, and even the Guardians were speechless at the sight. They knew Spyro would save the world but they never expected it to be quite like this. The sight of their new home was beautiful. There was no trace of the destruction of war, no grublins, no burned lands, no more fires, no massive fortress high above the volcano, no more ash raining down covering all the lands in a poisonous cloud of sulfur, and most importantly, no more Malefor.

Sparx flew to the edge of the cave, but he had to cover his eyes with his tiny hand from the familiar bright, hot light of the sun. He gasped at what he saw. "He did it. That big purple thing actually did it!"

A tremendous cheer went up, everyone shouting in joy and relief. All those years of war and now it was all over. They could finally live in peace. Hunter was one of the first to walk to the edge of the cave, just amazed at what one dragon had done.

"Well done, Spyro. Well done." Hunter said softly as he stopped on the edge of the cave and a small grin spread across his muzzle. Just behind him were the Guardians, a few meters back inside the cave, and Volteer was the first to speak as always.

"Well this is wonderful, delightful, magnificent, intriguing, stupendous, marvelous, amazing, ahhh?" Volteer blabbered, becoming tangled in his words.

"Yes, yes Volteer, this is rather amazing. But even when times are in crisis, you think you could keep your speeches down under a hundred words a second?" Cyril asked, still annoyed from Volteer's constant babbling.

"Will you please stop bickering you two!?" Terrador yelled. "You should be grateful for what our young warriors have accomplished…" Terrador paused and sighed, annoyed from the fighting from those two. "Some things will never change." he said under his breath, before continuing more loudly, "Which reminds me, we should follow back to the city, check the damage and wait for their return."

"Terrador? How do you know they will return? We don't even know if they made it out," Volteer questioned with a puzzled look on his muzzle, wanting a safe return for their heroes, but was not sure.

Terrador breathed in, filling his massive lungs until he couldn't take any more air and let out a big sigh. "I know they're out there somewhere. I can feel it."

With that, the three Guardians gave one more look at the breathtaking sight before they turned around and started to walk back to Warfang.

"I guess electric dragons always talk because they have the energy to do so or something?" Sparx said, mumbling to himself while hovering above Hunter, but the cheetah still heard him. "He just keep going, and going, and going, and going an–" He was suddenly cut off when a paw was waved in front of him.

"I think you've illustrated your point, Sparx." Hunter said, annoyed.

"Oh, uh, sorry..." Sparx paused. "Spyro and I have never been separated before. I guess...I guess I just miss him. I hope he's ok." Sparx hung his head over, looking at the ground and drooping his antennas down. For once in his life, he felt alone, not knowing if his purple brother had made it or not. The thought was racing in his head. He saved the world but did he save himself? Sparx didn't want to consider the possibility of being alone for the rest of his life. He couldn't bear to think of what it would be like without his brother, but every time he tried to think of when he'll see Spyro, it just keeps getting pushed back by the negative thought.

"Cheer up, Sparx. He'll return," Hunter said, then took one of his claws and rose the tiny insect's chin up until he was eye to eye with Sparx.

"You mustn't give up on hope yet… It's only been a few hours. You'll be reunited with him soon."

"You really think so?" Sparx questioned. The cheetah gave a firm nod in reply to his question. "Ok, thanks, Hunter."

"Any time." Hunter gave a small chuckle and Sparx did the same. After the dragonfly felt a little bit better, he buzzed off to the Guardians to go to the city and wait for his brother's return.

Hunter waited a little bit longer after Sparx flew off, then turned around and stared at the amazing sight in front of him. It was hard to believe that this was all in ruins just a few hours ago, but now the sight is completely fascinating. Everything looked like it had been restored, and everything looked at peace. However, it wasn't completely back to normal given that there were still some pieces of earth floating in the air. Nonetheless it was enough for them. After Hunter had enough of the beautiful sight, he inhaled deeply, let out a peaceful sigh and turned around to head off to Warfang, catching up with Sparx and the Guardians.

"Hey, hey get up," a young black male dragon spoke trying to wake his brother. "Now is not the time to be sleeping, now is the time to see what the legendary purple dragon has done." The black dragon hung over his older brother, shaking him vigorously to get him up. His brother groaned as his younger brother was continuing to shake him.

"Uh, are we dead?" the older red dragon asked.

"If we were, I wouldn't be shaking you trying to get you up to look at what the legendary purple dragon did, you idiot!" the black dragon repeated what he just said sarcastically.

The black dragon was fairly young, around fourteen years in age. He was a midnight black dragon with a dark blue underbelly and wings. He had two horns that came straight out the top of his head and two on the side that curved back. The horns were gray in color, as well as his claws. His tail blade had four sharp sides shaped like an X that was also gray. He had a row of small spikes that ran down his head to the tip of his tail and he had yellow-green glaring eyes.

"Would you stop calling me an idiot? It's getting on my nerves," the red dragon said still with his eyes closed and laying on his right side, trying to go back to sleep.

The red dragon was a little older than his brother, He was about seventeen in age which meant he was a little bigger than is brother. His scales were a smooth red color with small orange strips running down his right and left flank. His underbelly was yellow and his wings were orange. He had two fairly large yellow horns on top of his head that curved slightly back. He also had a flame-shaped tail blade that was also yellow. His eyes were blue and his claws were white, and a small row of yellow spikes ran down his back.

"Well then get your lazy tail up and follow me to the mouth of the cave," the young dragon demanded.

"I would be really happy if you stop talking and let me sleep," the older brother asked with annoyance in his voice, then tried to doze off again.

"I don't care what you want. You need to come see this, now!" With that, the younger black dragon got up off of his brother and jumped into the air with a quick flap of his wings before crouching into ball and slamming straight into his older brother's left flank.

The blow knocked the wind out of the red dragon's lungs causing him to gasp for air. The older dragon rolled over coughing still trying to get the air back into his lungs. He was finally able to catch his breath and rise to all fours, but as he did so his younger brother took off running and laughing to the mouth of the cave.

"Oh, you're going to pay for that, Zackary!" the red dragon shouted with anger in his voice. He was now furious at his younger brother for jumping on him. The one thing he hated the most was being disturbed from his sleep.

"Well I guess you'll have to chase me then, Singe," Zackary mocked as he looked back at his older brother and saw him getting up. He was running as fast as his legs would carry him, trying to reach to the edge of the cave before his older brother caught up with him.

Back inside the cave, the red dragon immediately started running after his brother. The length of the cave to the entrance was fairly long for the two brothers and it just seemed to go forever without an end. So he felt he would be able to catch his younger brother before the end.

The black dragon panted hard from exhaustion, knowing that his older brother was faster and more athletic than he was. He had to push through the pain, knowing it was the only way he could show his brother. But with his energy running down, it was getting harder for him to reach to the mouth of the cave.

"Oh shoot, if I get caught now, I'm dead,"Zackary said to himself. "No, I can't give up. Not now."

"Get back here you worthless lizard!" the red dragon shouted now closing in on the gap between them.

"No!" Zackary shouted from a distance that echoed throughout the cave.

Finally, after what felt like hours, Zackary made it out to the entrance of the cave. He panted hard, trying to catch his breath. Seconds later the older dragon ran into the light, but his sight was focused straight on the black dragon. He glared at his brother as steam blew out of his nostrils. He was a darker red than before from how mad he was.

"You're mine now," he smirked, and he wasted no time before he ran full speed at the black dragon.

Zackary had caught his breath and was looking over the edge of the cave when suddenly, he turned and looked over his shoulder to see his elder brother barreling towards him. His eyes widened. He even saw the hatred in his brother's blue eyes. The black dragon didn't have time to react before he was rammed head on. They both tumbled over each other until Singe got the advantage and pinned Zackary down to the ground. The red dragon looked at his brother panting but with a smile on his muzzle; a sinister grin. He let out and evil laugh.

"You're going to pay now!" the red dragon shouted. However, just when the red dragon was thinking what to do to his brother, something caught his eye. He looked outside the cave and saw a bird flying over. When the bird vanished from his sight, he noticed that everything was put back together. No grublins, no burning lands, and no gigantic beast stomping across the earth. All around there was lush, green grass, flowers painting the lands with color, birds chirping in the distance, and rivers flowing through the lands. All was at peace. Life was now free from the looming threat of war.

"Whoa…" That was all Singe could say. He was completely in awe from the sight. "So was this what you wanted to show me?"

Zackary just nodded his head clumsily, still pinned hard by his elder brother.

Singe finally rose off of his brother but didn't help him to get up. Zackary was able to get up on his own and sat down next to Singe. They both just sat there in the mouth of the cave looking at the amazing sight. Finally, several long moments later, Singe broke the silence.

"So this is what the legendary purple dragon has done? It's just breathtaking," Singe said calmly.

"Yes, yes it is," said the black dragon. Then he took a deep breath of fresh air and exhaled it back out. He was tickled by the new fresh air, making a big smile appear on his features.

"Maybe we might have the chance to meet the purple dragon one day?" Zackary said with excitement in his words.

"Maybe, Zack. Maybe."

The two dragons just sat there enjoying the remarkable sight. Then the red dragon remembered something. His eyes turned to a glare, and he turned to face his brother. Zackary saw Singe looking at him out of the corner of his eye, he turned around but when he did, he saw a paw speeding toward his muzzle. He tried to dodge it but he was not quick enough. He was hit full force across the muzzle and the blow was enough to knock him off of his feet and to the ground. After a second, he was finally able to get his bearings and rise up, shaking the stars from his vision. Then he turned to his brother to see him fighting a laugh that was tugging at his muzzle, but he couldn't hold it in. He burst out laughing.

"What was that for!?" Zackary exclaimed.

"That was for body slamming me when I was trying to sleep!" Singe replied.

"Well how else was I going to make you get up? You sleep more than that rock over there!" the black dragon snapped, pointing to a rock inside the cave.

"You better watch it before I slap you again," the red dragon said, annoyed and glaring at his younger brother.

"Go ahead. Make my day," Zackary called back in a cocky tone.

"Gladly," Singe said as they both approached each other in a fighting stance.

Back in the center of the world, Cynder was laying unconscious on the cold, hard stone in the same spot where Spyro brought the world back together. The black dragoness lay there, motionless on the ground. There were some small stones falling from the top of the cave she was in. The stones fell and tapped directly on her head, just enough to possibly wake her. However, she didn't wake up; not even a twitch. Some more rocks fell, getting larger each time. This time a rock two inches in diameter hit her right on top of her head, and finally Cynder began to twitch. She gave a small groan as consciousness began to take hold.

"Am I dead?" she thought to herself. "Most likely."

Her thoughts soon would be refuted when a loud cracking sound from the cave ceiling caught the attention of the dazed dragoness. When the noise pounded against her ears, her stomach churned. She slowly tried to open her eyes but this took a little effort in doing so. Regardless, she managed to open her eyes and looked. To her surprise, she was not dead. She was fully alive, but confused.

"How did I get here, and why do I feel so weak?" she wondered. She then tried to rise to her feet but only succeeded in falling back down on her side with soreness throughout her body. She was still dazed and confused, but before long her memory started to come back. Finally, it hit her: Malefor's defeat. Spyro putting the world back together. It was all coming back to her.

The black dragoness' eyes snapped wide open when she heard a loud noises above her. She looked up but with a struggle to see where the noise was coming from. She gasped aloud when she saw a large boulder break free, hurtling straight down toward her. It took all her might just to get up, and she was just able to jump out of the way before the massive rock smashed into the ground, shattering into small spear-like shards and flying everywhere. Cynder manage to avoid most of the shards but some were able to strike into her right flank. Her wounds weren't too bad, just enough to draw a small amounts of blood, so she paid them no mind.

"Ok… That was too close," she said, still on edge. She brushed away the rocky shards and dust that covered her. That was when she was met with an even greater shock. She turned around, and there she saw a purple body a few meters away laying on its side and not moving at all.

"Spyro?"

So, I hope it was a good start or a better start for those who have read my original verson. I'm still not a huge fan of the layout but I really didn't want to completely rewrite the whole thing...even though I kinda did. The later chapters will be much better than this. That I can promise.

So even though I have gotten back into writing, this doesn't mean I will update this often. I want to be consistent in publishing new chapters so for right now, I am going to be publishing a new chapter every first Sunday of each month. This may be the case until winter when my work slows down for the year. So, I plan to release the next chapter on 05/01/2022.

Please also leave a review and let me know what you think or what I need to improve on. I am open to criticism and feedback. Thanks again.

Til next time!
