Chapter 67: How Lucky We Are

Derek and Alex were sitting downstairs at the continental breakfast at the hotel. Derek reluctantly left Meredith a few hours after arriving, but it had gotten late, and he knew there was no way he could stay there with her overnight. He was just thankful he was her "personal assistant" at this point and would be by her side during her recovery, at least for the next few weeks.

The two men had been relatively quiet through the night in the room they shared. They were both exhausted from the events from the day before. Alex was very much banged up and had to be very careful when moving around. They wanted to keep him in the hospital overnight, but he pretty much refused to be admitted.

"Are you going to actually eat?" Alex said and watched Derek pick at the fruit in front of him.

"Not very hungry." Derek sighed heavily. He really wasn't sure if he was ready for this. He knew the next few days would be hell for Meredith. They were fairly certain she would be transported soon to Madigan, the army hospital at Fort Lewis, Washington.

Before Alex could say anything, Derek's phone started ringing. He knew from the ring tone, it was Mark. "Hello?"

"Hey man. How are ya? How is Meredith?" Mark asked quickly.

"I am okay. Meredith… she… not so great." Derek said, standing up from the table and walking outside on the patio.

"She will be okay, right? That is the information we got last night."

"She should be. I think she will be transferred to Madigan in the next few days for surgery on her back." Derek winced slightly at the last part. He knew this would not be good for her career, but it was too early to even think about that.

Mark knew he had to tell Derek the real reason for his call, but he had no idea how to start, "Hey Shep, there is actually a reason I am calling." He tried to keep his voice steady and calm.

"What is it?" Derek wondered.

"There are questions." Mark said flatly.

"About?" Derek questioned although he had a feeling he knew the content of the questions.

"Why you were chosen to be Meredith's personal assistant." Mark replied hesitantly. He knew Derek had a lot on his mind and didn't need to worry about this, but they were all talking a lot. Mark was doing what he could to thwart any rumors that were roaring loud and clear.

"It is none of their fucking business." Derek spat back.

"Dude, I was just letting you know shit is starting to go around. Are you sure you want to do this?"

"Are you fucking serious? I would give up everything to do this. I don't give a fuck about what people say."

Mark just let him vent, not taking it personal. He knew this was hard for him. "I know and I am doing what I can to help you out."

Derek ran his fingers through his head and took a seat in one of the chairs. "Mark, I know this doesn't look good, but I can't leave her. I was assigned to be her assistant and that is all they need to know. The Co is on board with it and everyone else needs to join him."

In the meantime, Alex had walked outside and quickly got Derek's attention.

"Hey Mark, I need to go. We are heading to the hospital, I think. I will talk to you later." Derek said quickly.

"Okay, just be careful." Mark warned.

"I will. Thanks for all the help." Derek said seriously before hanging up the phone.

"What's up?" Derek looked up to Alex seeing the concern in his face, "Karev, what is it?"

"We have a problem."

"What kind of problem?" Derek said carefully and nervously.

"We need to get to the hospital. I guess there are some visitors and want us there ASAP if it was possible." Alex explained.

"Who the hell is there?" Derek stood up from his seat.

"They didn't give me any details, just asked if we were coming. I left them the cell phone number before we left in case, they needed to get a hold of us." Alex had Meredith's cell phone because at this point, he had no idea where his was. He was pretty sure it was in a million pieces in the wreckage.

"Let's go." Derek said, grabbing the bag he had brought with him when he left Oak Harbor. At the time, he had no idea if he would get to see Meredith or have to pick up wreckage, but he knew either way, he would need things.

The drive to the hospital was very quiet between the two men. The music was on very low. It was an alternative type of station, but the words of the song playing gripped him.

One day

We'll get out of this shitty apartment

One day

Is all it takes for things to turn around now

All I know

Is I got you and you got me babe

And when that morning comes, I'll make coffee and you'll read the paper

We'll talk about our plans, and I'll keep saying how lucky we are

Derek couldn't help but feel drawn to this song and the lyrics that sounded amazing. His breath caught, thinking about how lucky he was…

One day

We'll get in the car and drive anywhere we wanna go

And then we'll stay in a five-star mini bar luxury hotel room

Cause all I know is I got you and you got me babe

And when that morning comes, I'll make coffee and you'll read the paper

We'll talk about our plans, and I'll keep saying how lucky we are

How lucky we are

Oh oh ohh

How luck we are

Oh oh ohh

How lucky we are

Oh oh ohh

How lucky we are

Ooh ooh oh

Ooh ooh oh

Ooh ooh oh

Ooh ooh oh

One day

We'll turn on the tv and won't see nothing 'bout war

And when that morning comes, I'll make coffee and you'll read the paper

We'll talk about our plans, and I'll keep saying how lucky we are

How lucky, how lucky, how lucky we are

Oh

How lucky, how lucky, how lucky we are

Oh

How lucky, how lucky, how lucky we are

Oh

How lucky, how lucky, how lucky we are

Derek felt solace in this song. How lucky they were. He knew this could have turned out completely different but at this point, he couldn't help but feel fortunate that at least he could see her, spend time with her, and be there for her. For now, that would have to do.

They pulled into the hospital and Derek found a parking spot close to the entrance. They both became more anxious the closer they had gotten to the hospital curious exactly who was there. They hastily walked down the increasingly familiar hallway of the hospital straight to her room. Before they got to her room, Alex heard the one voice that he would have recognized anywhere. The one voice he knew he never wanted to hear again, but yet, the voice was here, loud and clear.
