Chapter 13. With good news comes bad news

Madge: Dear Diary,

I am now an estimate of 12 weeks along in my pregnancy and almost done with my first trimester according to Katniss' mom. The baby must be big because my stomach is larger than the other women in the district who are 12 weeks in to their pregnancy. I don't really care how big I get as long as my child is healthy. And guess what? I just found out some big news yesterday… Katniss is pregnant too! I bumped into her at the hob and she offered me some strawberries. When she handed me the berries she leaned into my ear and whispered she's pregnant. I quickly asked her how far along she was and she told me she's been throwing up every day for 5 weeks. I am so excited about this. I can't wait until both our baby's come into this world. I can already tell they will be the best of friends know matter what the genders are. I also wanted to mention that Peeta started on-

I didn't get to finish the sentence because suddenly a wave of nausea hits me and I run into the bathroom. I just barely make it to the toilet by the time my breakfast was making a reappearance. I jump a little when hands touch my shoulders and pull back my hair.

After I finish puking my guts out I turn around and face my helper. It's Peeta which doesn't surprise me.

"When did you get here?" I ask wiping my mouth.

"Just now. I heard you throwing up when I came in"

"Thanks" was all I can say before washing the nasty taste out of my mouth.

"This baby better be worth all this morning sickness" I huff as I turn sideways and lift my shirt, showing my small baby bump.

"You don't need to be worried at all. You will be an amazing mom and I can guarantee you that when our baby comes he or she will be worth it all" Peeta promises as he comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist. He softly places his hands upon mine that are touching the bump.

As I look at us in the mirror all I see is a perfect family. I smile as I look at our reflection.

"We're going to love this baby with all our hearts" I say as I turn around and give him a kiss.

"We already do" he tells me when we pull our lips away from one another's.

"How's the baby's room coming along?" I say as I leave the bathroom. I hold my diary in my hands and hide it in the book shelf when Peeta wasn't looking.

"It's coming along" he says mischievously. We made a deal with my parents that if I visit them frequently then I'm allowed to go live with Peeta in his house in Victor's village.

His house had three bedrooms. Peeta and I will share his room, then there's the guest room and the last room will go to the baby.

We will start taking my things over to his house by the end of this week but he just couldn't help himself by starting on the baby's room.

He won't tell me a thing about it. He says it's a surprise and that I will be able to see it when it's done. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

"What time is it?" I ask. Peeta looks at his wrist watch.

"Around 4. Why?"

"I'm hungry" I say looking him in the eye. He nods.

"I can make you something. What do you want?" I swallow trying to come up with a food that I won't barf at.

"Do you want strawberries?" I scrunch my face in disgust.

Usually strawberries are my favorite snack but ever since I found out I'm pregnant I've had strange food cravings and aversions.

My apatite is so out of whack. These days I'm eating things I normally don't like, like fish, peppers, almonds, squash and blackberries.

"Can I have blackberry pie?"

"As you wish" He says as he leaves to go down stairs. I follow him out of my room to the kitchen. He gets right to the pie.

While he's making my pie I sit down on the couch and start writing down baby names. I know it's a little early for that but I'm just so eager. I want to see my baby already. I start with 4 girl names and 4 boy names that I like and that's about as far as I get when Peeta joins me.

"So what have you been doing?" he sits down beside me and places his arm around my shoulders.

"Thinking of baby names. How's my pie?" I ask still writing down some names.

"Your pie is good" he chuckles "Will I be a part of this baby naming process?"

"Of course you will. After all you were a part of the baby making process." His cheeks instantly turn red when I say that.

"So, all you need to do is just write 4 girl names and 4 boy names"

"Sounds good to me" he says taking the pen and paper out of my hands. He thinks for a second before scribbling his ideas onto the paper. When he finishes he hands me the paper. I look at the names very closely:

Boys: 1.) Connor

2.) Henry

3.) Benjamin

4.) Owen

Girls: 1.) Madison

2.) Layla

3.) Chloe

4.) Sophie

"Those are all cute names. My favorites are Connor, Owen, Sophie, Layla and Madison" Peeta smiles when I say Sophie. It really is tragic what happened to his little sister that's why I want to somehow use her name so the life of his sister doesn't leave the hearts of the ones that loved her.

"Your turn" he says handing me the paper. It's more difficult for me to think of baby names than for him because there are so many cute names to choose from. Finally it becomes easier for me once I stop thinking about it and just write:

Boys: 1.) Liam

2.) Austin

3.) Andrew

4.) Elliot

Girls: 1.) Emma

2.) Poppy

3.) Laura/Lauren

4.) Danielle

Once I finish I hand the paper to Peeta and cuddle up next to him.

"I knew you'd be good at this. You're purposely making this tough for me aren't you?" I do nothing but smile. "Okay… I like the names Liam, Austin, Andrew, Emma, and Poppy".

"Good. So now we just have to narrow it down to two names, one girl one boy." I say intently.

"I think we can do it. We just have to pick one girl name out of Sophie, Layla, Madison, Emma, and Poppy and one boy name out of Connor, Owen, Liam, Austin, and Andrew" Peeta says realizing how much work that is.

"It's okay. We don't have to figure out the names just yet. I don't even know the gender of the baby, so we've got plenty of time" I assure him.

"You know I love you right?" he says leaning in towards me.

"I know. I love you too" I say just before our lips touch. This is one of our most passionate kisses. We don't pull away for a good ten minutes but only because Katniss barges in on us.

"Madge! Peeta!" she cries. We stop kissing and look towards her like our parents caught us. We had embarrassed looks on our faces with flushed cheeks and pink lips, tingling from the kiss, in a good way.

"What?" We ask in unison.

"Turn on the TV!" she urges. The panic and fear in Katniss' voice alarms me and Peeta quickly turns on the TV.

Katniss: President Snow is on. He's standing in front of the podium about to give his speech about the upcoming Hunger Games which was the third Quarter Quell. I'm dreading going back to the Capitol and having to mentor the two kids from district 12, training them and preparing them for their death.

He looks right into the camera with his evil snakelike eyes and I feel as if he is staring straight into my soul. Suddenly I feel like I smell the stench of blood and roses even though he's only on TV, thank god. President Snow goes on to tell us what happened in the previous Quarter Quells.

"On the twenty-fifth anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that their children were dying because of their choice to initiate violence, every district was made to hold an election and vote on the tributes who would represent it."

I couldn't help but wonder how that would have felt. Picking the kids who had to go. It is worse, I think, to be turned over by your own neighbors than have your name drawn from the reaping ball.

"On the fiftieth anniversary," the president continues, "as a reminder that two rebels died for each Capitol citizen, every district was required to send twice as many tributes."

I imagine facing a field of forty-seven instead of twenty-three. Worse odds, less hope, and ultimately more dead kids. That was the year Haymitch won.

"And now we honor our third Quarter Quell," says the president. The little boy in white steps forward, holding out the box as he opens the lid. We can see the tidy, upright rows of yellowed envelopes. Whoever devised the Quarter Quell system had prepared for centuries of Hunger Games. The president removes an envelope clearly marked with a 75. He runs his finger under the flap and pulls out a small square of paper. Without hesitation, he reads,

"On the seventy-fifth anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors."

Madge gives a faint shriek and Peeta buries his face in his hands, but I feel more like the people I see in the crowd on television. Slightly baffled. What does he mean? Existing pool of victors?

Then I get what it means. The idea struck me like lighting. District 12 only has three existing victors to choose from. Two male. One female which means…

I am going back into the arena.

Cliff Hanger! PLEASE REVIEW if you want more. Also please tell me which baby names you want their child to be named in your comments. You will find out the gender in later chapters. THANKS! 3 3
