Chapter 26 – Lingering peace

The situation she had found herself in was everything but what she thought usually would have happened. Before even realizing it she had gotten used to living in Matthias' household. She, an Awakened Being, casually living together with a human. Something like that had been unheard of up until that day – even Lisa herself had given up on trying to understand what had happened, how, and why. Roughly ten months before two of her supposed comrades had come after her head and, upon realizing that another, stronger warrior was nearing the scene, left her to die. Even though she had known what was about to happen she had accepted it, thinking it had been inevitable. Her special skill, getting to know about random events of a warriors life, regardless whether it was in the past, present or future, was something that had never failed her, after all.

However, though she thought to be prepared to die, in her supposedly last moments she had a change of heart and decided to awaken, in order to exact her revenge on the two warriors that had taken away what was most important to her: her life as a warrior and hence her ability to be friends with all her comrades. She knew, that, if she had just died, that life of hers would also have ended, so she chose to awaken instead – and did, while still desperately clinging to what was human about her. All for the sake of killing that one woman who had taken everything she loved for her own, irrational desires: Backstabbing Liara. That was what she had wished for, the one thing that had made her decide to try and keep on living.

And then, however, she was enthusiastically sweeping the living room of the house of the human man that had kindly taken her in. After sweeping all of the dust out of the back door she put the broom back into the broom closet. She had cleaned the whole house that morning and, quite proud of herself, stemmed her hands into her waist, smiled widely and, after a moment, resigningly asked herself: "Just what am I doing?"

Lisa let herself plop onto a chair in the kitchen, leaned back and closed her eyes. Just about everything felt off. She was an Awakened Being, supposedly a mindless monster thinking but from meal to meal – in other words from gut to gut. And then, even though she had bursts of hunger several times a month, she still managed to forgo preying on humans. As long as she would stuff her mouth with whatever else was available her hunger would eventually go away. Even though it was terribly disgusting at first she had gotten pretty much used to eating what humans eat and the taste of it.

Also, her desire to go after Liara and Anna and have them pay for what they had done was basically gone – or at least she had forgotten about it. Instead she spent her life as something comparable to a maid – or a housewife, as she liked to fantasize – at the house of Matthias, a local blacksmith and member of the city council, keeping the house clean, doing the groceries and preparing meals. The evening she'd spend with him and sometimes friends of his. That everyone was scared out of their minds when she first entered Arnea had been completely forgotten , even by her.

Her only worry was the Organization and its warriors, but in the ten months she had lived in Arnea not a single warrior had come even close to it, so she more and more forgot about that, too.

She was aware that things were definitely out of the ordinary, and she was also aware that, at any given time, her peaceful life could end without warning. But still, she clung to what she had. Because, even after having lost her life and her precious comrades, after awakening and losing her human self and even though she was in a constant fight with her nature as an Awakened Being, she did not want for things to change.

Because she was content.

That evening also was nothing out of the ordinary for her: it was Saturday and for Matthias another hard week of hard work had ended. For dinner Lisa had prepared steaks, potatoes and red cabbage. Despite not liking human food herself she was astoundingly good at cooking. The way she seasoned food was known throughout Arnea. At times she and Matthias had honestly considered having her open an inn just because of that. The only thing that had them discard that idea in the long run were Lisa's concerns about her nature, what Matthias accepted.

At all he was a very tolerant person, with apparently not the slightest care in the world about the possibility of Lisa losing to her inner demon and make hell break loose in Arnea. Due to his unconditioned way of accepting Lisa despite knowing that she was probably a ticking time bomb she had grown utterly fond of him – a feeling she would have declared love without a second thought if she had acknowledged herself, an Awakened Being, to be capable of such a feeling.

After dinner and after she was done doing the dishes she, like every Saturday evening, served him a keg of his favorite red wine. He was sitting in his armchair, a book on his lap, waiting for Lisa to sit down on a chair next to him.

It was that time of the week that he read a chapter out of a religious tale about the Twin Goddesses Teresa and Clare, a book that fascinated the both of them alike. It told about the twin sisters Teresa and Clare, who both were in love with the same man and, after years of jealousy and hatred realized that their long buried love for each other was more important than the love for a man. Due to that realization they were able to overcome their differences and save the world from peril. Out of gratefulness the Deity of All promoted them to goddesses – and hence they became known as the Twin Goddesses of Love.

Once again Matthias had read the whole book to her in one evening and once again it was way past midnight as he closed it with the last words of the tale: "and hence they took over the task of accompanying the souls on their travel between the world of the living and the world of the dead, ensuring not a single one got lost in the endless void in between." Lisa joyfully applauded him, as always, and he modestly thanked her, as always. And, as always, the both of them exchanged their thoughts about that one book, without regards for time and without growing tired of it.

The sun had already began to rise and the two of them had just then decided to finally go to bed, as they heard knocks on the door. Slightly surprised Matthias asked: "Who might that be this early in the morning?"

"It's probably Rainer bringing our milk for today" Lisa answered smiling.

"This early?" he wondered.

"Well, he's a busy young man, after all. I'll go get the door!" she replied and went to open it.

Right after she had done that, however, shock paralyzed her as the piercing gaze of two silver eyes hit her from under the hood of the tall, cloaked woman right in front of her.

"Y-you..." she stumbled.

"Long time no see, Lisa" the woman answered calmly.

Author's notes:

Now, what is going to happen to Lisa? She had anticipated that her peaceful life might be shattered, so, with this silver eyed woman (I suppose we all know who it is) appearing, what is going to happen? Stay tuned, double update intended.
