PROLOGUE
in which he might just disappear
A boy walks among the ruins of the Watchtower, too young to understand the dangers of this abandoned land. Around him, golurks watch solumnely as gastlys and duskulls surround the four year old. Not a noise is made, not a whisper cried, but the boy feels no fear. In fairness, neither the gastlys or the duskulls wish to harm the child. They are only curious, drawn to him and his movements so similar to theirs.
Men are approaching in the far distance, screaming his name, but the boy doesn't listen. Instead, he finds an opening in the wall of the Watchtower. In the dead of night, he doesn't see the hole in front of him, and for a second, falls to his death, only to be caught by a pumpkaboo, who lets him down gently on the floor of the caverns.
In front of the boy seem to stretch miles and miles of tunnels, and he instinctively knows not to walk too far from where he came in. Still, he feels such trust in the Ghost pokemon surrounding him, knowing they will guide him back to safety if he calls for them. He as always felt this way about Ghost pokemon. He understands them, and they understand him. He does not need to wait for his tenth birthday for the adults to confirm his Ghost affinity.
Guiding himself with the faint light of litwicks, he walks down the tunnels, using his small size to seemingly pass through walls, where adults would never fit. The walls are etched with the stories of the past, words from a language long forgotten, surrounded by drawings of pokemon long extinct. The litwicks follow him gently, providing him with the light he needs.
He finds himself suddenly in a large opening, in what seemed to be a ceremonial room, now only a disintegrated cave. On the largest wall in front of him, a giant figure is drawn : a dragon, he thinks, or at least the skeleton of one, one he has never seen in his coloring books. A red glow emanates from behind the remains of an altar, and the boy picks up a small, black stone oozing red light.
He has found a wishing star, and his wish is to one day, be found as well.
