~ CVI: Elrond Vs Thranduil! ~
Imladris, 3022 TA, April 13th
Gimli was unable to convince Xena to reveal her secret to Legolas, and her family was of little use, arguing that she lacked the ability to conceal the birth of his son from him. The child was now a year old, and Xena had managed to keep his birth a secret; neither his name nor his father was known. She would converse often with Gimli, who was seemingly the only one to meet Legolas frequently, and every month when he visited, he would bring news of him and an invitation to join them on an expedition. However, the response was always the same: "No."
"No, Lass! He is fully entitled to know! Your son has Legolas as a father!" The dwarf spoke gently so that she would not grow angry and engage in an argument with her. That she was so obstinate in her judgments and determined to keep Legolas in the dark angered the dwarf. Why couldn't his closest friends have a happy ending?
Xena could not help but see Gimli's anxiety; as a loyal friend, he had been there for her and Legolas. She was overwhelmed by the prospect of repeating the same dialogue with the same response. The dwarf felt compelled to accept his ideas and eventually talk with Legolas. His poor friend had endured all of that suffering and darkness, and now he was unaware of the existence of his own son.
"I'm sorry, Gimli, but I cannot grant your request," Xena replied as they sat in the gardens of Imladris and engaged in a lengthy conversation. "He has Legolas as a parent. And he is supposed to know it. But if I tell Legolas that he has a son, I would have to acknowledge that we were a thing. And it is impossible!"
Gimli shook his head in astonishment; he was extremely familiar with her. "I'm sure you forgot, Lassy!" he said. "If you refuse to meet with Legolas, I will divulge your secrets to him. I've come to retrieve you and remind you!"
"What's your point?" the warrior princess replied with her eyes fixed on Gimli. "My plan hasn't changed, Gimli! You do not want to make me mad now, do you?"
"I'd want you to consider Lass! Who has left every day and night dwelling in the past... Have compassion for Legolas, who yearns for a son he does not have, and consider your own family. An unusual act committed inside the House of Elrond had left the elven lord devastated, but he is unable to convince his daughter to listen. Nobody can."
"Does Legolas still have those dreams?" Xena inquired with a softer tone and a concerned expression on her face. After the birth of their son, her father, grandmother, and Gimli informed her about Legolas' peculiar dreams and how he still felt attached to her. His family understood that he had a relationship with Xena and that they had a child. But due to his memory loss, the prince struggled to comprehend what these dreams signified, though his fëa recognized them.
Gimli nodded before taking a seat next to her. Once again, the dwarf began to describe the experiences Legolas and he had had; he told of the times he had awakened in the middle of the night in search of his son. No story of Gimli, however, could break her heart enough to have her go to Legolas and reveal the truth. Legolas had decided to forget and was now leading a new life; maybe this was for the best. She has witnessed him endure a great deal of suffering and would not want for him to endure any more. If she were to convey the truth to him, he would be plagued by the dread of remembering. She never would do that. She cared too much for him to give him pain once again.
Fair and dreaded, two shadowy forms approached one another at the edge of the vast child room in the dusk. The trees outside were turning green as spring approached, and the sound of the waterfalls echoing inside the chamber helped the toddler fall asleep. Elrond and Thranduil were left completely alone with their grandchild while Xena and the dwarf conversed at length in the gardens.
Elrond replied calmly as he observed the sweetly sleeping silver-blond elfling, "Since the infant resembles you and Legolas, you must let a member of our kin to name the child. I would want to pick his name."
The infant was pleased by his dream, as seen by his grinning face and dimpled cheeks. He was created to seek love, to be a part of the beautiful, safe web of emotions that give, nourish, and protect one another. It encouraged others in his vicinity to be the greatest versions of themselves, to rewind and discard weak arguments. However, he was powerless against unreasonable arguments.
"Elrond, you have stated this wish too often. Our lineage possesses potent sperm, and our male relatives are fertile. I did not intend for our grandson to resemble my son and myself. You should have known better; I shall choose the child's name." Thranduil acted quietly while concealing his pride in his statements.
"Permit me to remind you, Thranduil, that I have four children and my daughter has three. Your line has always produced one offspring. I guess it is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that we are the fertile ones." Elrond corrected him while emphasising the strength of his line.
"How could you possibly count two children from another world?" Thranduil snorted. Despite Elrond's efforts to get him to confess to a falsehood, he refused to do so. "That does not matter!"
"Why are you denying us what is rightfully ours? And if your son was more conscientious and remembered her, she would have the opportunity to have other children, and I could offer you with further evidence." Elrond said in a harsh tone.
"Do not make fun of my son's misfortune. You should all know how much Legolas endured! How much suffering is he enduring? He is not responsible!" Elvenking responded coldly in an attempt to avoid seeming unkind after hearing Elrond utter these comments.
"I never intended to keep you apprised of Legolas's suffering," the lord of Imladris apologised. "However, I disagree with you choosing a name for my grandchild! You just make him resemble you, Thranduil!"
"Again, it is not our fault that our sperm is so charming!" Thranduil exclaimed with great pride. The day he learned that his son had successfully fathered a child and provided him with a grandson was the happiest of his life. However, as he saw the child develop, he realised that he resembled both himself and Legolas. The Elvenking was so pleased by this that he could not stop talking about it.
Elrond attempted to reason with Thranduil without seeing that he was not making any sense. "I refuse to accept it!" Thranduil was opposed.
"Are you two fighting once more?" When Xena and Gimli arrived to check on the infant and discovered the two elf lords bickering, Xena rolled her eyes."What has occurred at this time?"
"Your father believes he must be the one to name the child since we have given him the looks and are not permitted to name him ourselves!" While disregarding Elrond and seeking to capture Xena's attention, Thranduil said enthusiastically, "You must prohibit it!"
Xena objected, "I've already informed you, that none of you would be able to name the child. I will decide!"
"He already resembles you; what more do you desire?" Elrond responded with obstinacy, refusing to let the issue end.
"I had nothing to do with it; it just so happens that my family has great sperm!" Thranduil dissented, his hand now resting on the child's bed as he paused and regarded his adorable sleeping grandchild. "I would want to choose the child's name!"
"Your son may have robust sperm, but my daughter was the fruitful one! We will choose a name for my grandson!" He replied out of breath, refusing to let the proud Elvenking name his grandson. He might have a name associated with the colour green or, even worse, with trees. By the decree of the Valar, he called his son Greenleaf.
Xena was on the verge of a snarl when she realised that both of them were driving her insane with their constant bickering, which became sillier with each new dispute. "Are you now arguing over the potency of your line's sperm? Have you lost your mind? What kind of talk are you having in front of my child? " She sobbed aloud, and if she had her sword on her, she would have harmed them both.
"We discussed natural occurrences!" Elrond guarded them. "There was nothing offensive in our conversations!"
Thranduil saw the child who had been awakened by the loud talk and was attempting to clutch his foot while seeming so puzzled as to whose foot it was. "He cannot even identify his own foot, but you are concerned that he will comprehend the term sperm!"
Xena reclined on the bed and carefully lifted her son, letting him rest against her chest while she smiled. Before she and Gimli departed, she stated, "I guess, Thranduil, he took that bit as a bonus from your line!" with a sneer, leaving the two lords to argue over the sperm and fertility of their respective lines.
