Sonic: The Tournament of Chaos
Chapter 13: The Ultimate Life Form
Here we are, folks. The match we've been waiting for. I'd like to give a quick shout out to everyone for their support, especially Tashasaurous. Go check out their Sonic stories, they're amazingly written. Enjoy the chapter.
The arena appeared to enter a state of silence, the crowd's eyes glued towards the approaching battle. Only one more member of Team Etastie remained on the stage, standing alone to face off against the rest of Team Sonic. Despite having the advantage in numbers, the heroes didn't expect an easy victory.
Tails watched intently, practically on the edge of his seat. "This is it. Only left to go."
"They're going to have to work together," Espio added, slightly concerned about the upcoming battle's outcome. "Chax has proven himself to be a worthy opponent. He won't fall so easily."
"How nice of you to notice."
The friends all collectively shifted their gaze in the same direction. Sitting nearby were the fallen members of Team Etastie, eagerly awaiting for the battle to commence. Serenity, who had been the one to speak up, continued. "Your friends won't be able to defeat Chax."
"You have a lot of faith in your friend," Knuckles noted, speaking in a soft grumble. "What makes you so sure he won't lose?"
"I'm sorry, have we not been participating in the same tournament?" Serenity questioned with a hint of sarcasm. "Chax can move faster than your friends. He has barely taken a scratch. Do not presume your numbers will give you any significant advantage. I am confident in this outcome."
Knuckles scoffed in response, refusing to let her words shake his faith in Team Sonic.
Finally, after staring each other down for what felt like an eternity, Team Sonic finally made the first move. Sonic removed his hands from his sides and slid into his combat stance. He powered up, calling on his super speed once more. Shadow and Blaze followed suit, readying themselves for combat. Chax, waiting for their attack, breathed softly, already wielding a small amount of energy to combat his opponents. The hedgehogs couldn't defeat him before. Even with a third member helping them, Chax remained confident the outcome was going to be the same.
Sonic lunged forward directly towards the wolf, consumed in a blue trail and determined to finish this fight now. Shadow and Blaze followed, charging from their opponent's respective left and right. Before their team attack could so much as strike, Chax suddenly moved behind Blaze, striking her away with a powerful kick.
Spinning around, Sonic and Shadow charged once more with Blaze hastily returning. Together, the trio launched an uncoordinated attack, rapidly striking to gain any edge and throw Chax off guard. Chax pushed away each of their attacks, blocking and deflecting any that were sent his way with superior speed. Even at their peak, none of them were a match for him.
Pushing away their attack, Chax caught Shadow's fist and punched him backwards, following with a simultaneous strike from his free hand and leg to knock away Sonic and Blaze. Chax lunged forward towards Shadow to continue, all the while Blaze unleashed a series of fire blasts mid-air to knock him off balance.
Even as Chax ignored the blasts, Blaze, from her position, fired a beam of fire. The attack hit Chax whole, surrounding him in a cloud of smoke in the aftermath. All was silent for a moment, allowing Blaze to briefly exhale and catch her breath. Their combined attack did nothing to leave permanent results as Chax suddenly shot out from the smoke with the intent on striking Sonic.
Without warning, Blaze charged forward and shoved Sonic out of the way, taking the powerful kick instead that sent her flying away. Shadow growled, charging once more and unleashed a series of heavy blows. Chax crossed his arms and blocked them nonchalantly in mid-air.
While he was occupied with Shadow, Sonic took this chance to attack from behind. Chax turned to face him and simultaneously, he deflected and struck Shadow in the abdominal area before spin kicking him away. Now his focus shift towards Sonic, who charged and attacked in a similar manner, trying to push through his defence.
Their battle travelled throughout the arena at frightening speed. As their fight took them to the ground, Sonic slid his feet across the ground and backed away. Chax was in the middle of charging forward, halting by the rapid Chaos energy blasts from above.
Shadow launched towards him from the air, striking a single fist towards his face. To his horror, he failed to catch him off guard as Chax caught his fist between his grasp. In retaliation, he arched back his free hand, striking into his torso and launching the hedgehog a great distance away, winding him before he collapsed.
Sonic roared and bounced forward to strike Chax, who calmly moved his head to avoid the blow and countered with an uppercut to his chin, followed with a sharp kick. Growing desperate, Sonic tucked himself into a Spin Dash in one final attempt to turn the tide, charging towards Chax, who was one step ahead. Raising his fist, Chax suddenly jumped, striking the blue hedgehog out of the air. As he fell through the air, Chax jumped to grab Sonic by the throat, forcing the hedgehog back down to the stage.
Restraining him within a powerful choke hold, Chax raised his free hand directly in front of Sonic's face, preparing to finish the hedgehog with one final knockout blow. Sonic thrashed, struggling to break free from the wolf's powerful grasp. Chax narrowed his eyes, tightening his grip to keep his opponent still.
Chax suddenly froze, all the confidence he carried vanished within seconds. He slowly turned his head around and squinting his eyes towards the sudden increase of temperature behind him. Blaze stood firm, one hand placed firmly against his shoulder while the other was arched back, wielding a powerful fire blast. Roaring with determination, Blaze shoved the blast directly into his back, an unguarded area of his torso. Unable to strengthen his defence, Chax fell victim to her attack. The energy of fire exploded, the shock wave that followed sent everyone flying in several directions.
As Sonic fell mid-air, Shadow teleported behind him, successfully catching him and safely placing him on the ground with Blaze following shortly, regrouping to prepare for their next tactic. The area settled and all was silent, no hint of the wolf's presence. While the princess' sneak attack successfully damaged their opponent, there was no possibility, not even the slightest, that he was defeated.
The smoke cleared, revealing the partially damaged wolf. Blaze tightened her gaze, noting the small hints of smoke appearing from behind. A burned injury now formed within his back, a first-degree burn in place of his fur. He growled softly as they configured their next attack.
Sonic and Shadow immediately prepared to intercept once more. Blaze stepped forward, holding her arms forward to keep her allies at bay. "We may have the advantage in numbers, but our opponent is very strong. Direct attacks alone are not going to defeat him."
The blue hedgehog nodded in agreement. "He's fast enough to catch anything we can throw at him."
"Our one chance is to catch him off guard again," Shadow added, tightening his fist with resolution. "Then we can beat him."
Blaze softly shook her head. "Now that I delivered such a wounding blow, he will not be foolish to fall for it a second time."
Shadow's eyes didn't leave his opponent, refusing to look away even for a second. Without a timit limit, Chax was in no hurry to engage them in combat. But even if Shadow looked away for a second, that was more than enough time for the wolf to charge forward. He spoke softly in a low whisper for his teammates. "We have to change our approach. Sonic, stay close by my side. We'll keep his attention on us. Blaze, prepare your powers to strike him again. Your opening will be small."
Sonic was surprised to see his rival become so wise and mature after so long, choosing wisely to coordinate their attack instead of rushing in recklessly. There was no doubt in the blue hedgehog's mind about choosing Shadow to lead their team. He turned with agreement, clutching his fists tightly. "Let's do it!"
Meanwhile, Chax breathed softly, fighting through the intense pain lingering from the princess' attack. Catching him off guard once was lucky. Now his guard strengthened, refusing to allow his opponents to catch him distracted a second time. He clutched his hands tightly, preparing to face them once more.
The remaining members of Team Sonic breathed softly, keeping their composure strong. Following the Ultimate Life Form's strategy, Blaze formed a flaming ball within the palm of her hand, ready to strike at her opponent. Without hesitation, she twirled aggressively to build momentum and hurled the blast in one swift motion.
In response, Chax swatted the blast away just in time to see Sonic and Shadow charging towards him, raising their respective right and left fists. In one coordinated assault, they threw their fists forward, falling short as Chax raised his arms to block. Swiftly, Sonic ducked down and swept his leg under the wolf's feet, forcing him to stumble. Shadow threw himself backwards onto one hand for support, throwing his feet forward to double kick their opponent away.
Intent on keeping their plan, the two hedgehogs followed and engaged their opponent , roaring with determination as they rained down their attacks and unleashed a flurry of blows, all the while Chax deflected and blocked their strikes. They broke off their initial attack, changing strategies by using their homing abilities instead. With Chax's attention focused on the two hedgehogs, Blaze prepared her attack.
She stood firm, eyes narrowed and both hands formed together. Their fast movement across the stage did not leave her sight. Her eyes kept pace and watched their battle, even as they moved around at super speeds. The opening she awaited for finally appeared, and she bellowed, firing a powerful beam of flame towards the wolf.
In coordination, Sonic and Shadow kicked against Chax for momentum and launched away. Chax spun and crossed his arms, blocking the flame from striking him full, even as it surrounded him in a wave of fire and blocked him out of their sight. He pushed through and set his sights on the princess, punching through her wave of flames with a single fist as his superior speed carried him forward.
Blaze roared, her voice filled with a mix of frustration and determination, pressing her flames harder in desperation to keep him at bay. Her powerful flames did nothing to slow his advances as Chax struck her across the face, launching the princess backwards. She struggled to regain her footing, the heels of her shoes scraping loudly against the stage.
Swiftly regaining her balance, Blaze threw out her hands and fired another beam of fire. Halting his position, Chax raised his fist and calmly blocked her attack, all the while she pressed her flames forward. Her allies raced over to help. Shadow charged from the side, firing minor blasts that bounced harmlessly against the wolf's purple aura.
"Darn it!" Shadow exclaimed with frustration.
Sonic ran alongside his rival for support, objecting with his own plan. "Quick, while he's distracted!"
"Right!" Shadow agreed.
In accordance, the hedgehogs moved to the sides and surrounded Chax, striking together. Using only his free hand alone, Chax caught Sonic's hand before throwing him towards Blaze, forcing the princess to stop her attack. Simultaneously, he caught Shadow's leg, striking the Ultimate Life Form within his chest before following with a devastating uppercut. Shadow fell through the air, hitting the ground with a sickening thud that left him temporarily dazed.
Seeking to end this now, Chax towards Sonic before he recovered, unleashing a flurry of strikes against the defenceless hedgehog. His fists moved with incredible speed, leaving hundreds of afterimages behind as he continued. Unable to form any defence, Sonic screamed with anguish, his body crying out for the pain to stop. Seconds turned into hours for the blue hedgehog until the wolf finally ceased his attack. Unable to even register the endless assault, Sonic collapsed face first against the ground, passing out from the severe damage.
"SONIC!" Amy and Tails exclaimed, unable to take their eyes away from the endless slaughter.
Only one more fighter stood tall. Chax shifted his attention towards the princess, who charged towards him in an aura of flame, one fist arched back as she roared. The wolf calmly sidestepped, avoiding the intended blow. Blaze quickly spun around, throwing her leg forward. Chax grasped at her ankle, yanking her closer before seizing the princess by the neck.
"You still try to fight," Chax noted, applying further pressure against her throat, hellbent on exacting revenge for her previous actions. "You have fought valiantly. Accept your loss. I will grant you a defeat worthy of your actions."
Even with her lungs collapsing from the intense pressure pressed against her neck, Blaze refused to show any fear. Defiant to the end, she grunted out her resistance. "Never… I… Will… Never… Give… Up."
Chax, while disappointed to see his opponent's willpower remained strong, offered a small but noticeable nod of respect. His free hand tightened, preparing to finish the princess with one final strike. She thrashed wildly, unable to call on her pyrokinetic with no reserved energy left. The wolf's fist fell short as a single blast collided against his arm, forcing him to release Blaze out of instinct.
She dropped on her side, coughing in anguish as she fell in and out of consciousness. Fortunately, Chax's attention shifted away for now, averting his gaze towards the attacker. Shadow, clutching one arm tightly around his torso, lowered his free hand. Standing tall once more against the mighty warrior, he glanced towards the rest of his team. Sonic didn't budge while Blaze struggled to hold onto reality. Neither one would be able to assist any further.
Now it was down to him.
Chax stopped in his tracks, arms crossed over his chest while wearing a curious expression. "You are a fascinating group. Despite extensive injuries and a sense of hopelessness, you still try to face me. Why? The outcome is inevitable. Your allies are down, you can barely stand on your own two feet. Why fight at all? Is winning the Chaos Emeralds that important for you?"
Shadow fell silent for a moment, wincing as the aftershock of his injuries kicked in. His gaze briefly shifted towards the audience, locking eyes with the fallen members of Team Sonic. While the others carried uncertain expressions, Rouge nodded firmly without a single trace of concern. Her confidence in her teammate did not falter, even as she witnessed the events unfold. Supportive to the end, Rogue knew what was going to happen next.
Inhaling softly, Shadow returned his attention back towards his opponent, standing tall without holding himself up. "The Chaos Emeralds mean nothing to me. Gems can be replaced."
"I know who you are," Chax confirmed. "You are Shadow the Hedgehog. Born on the Space Colony ARK, created by Professor Gerald Robotnik. You have quite a disdain for humanity after everything they did to you. Despite all misgivings, you would still willingly fight for them. Answer me one question: why do you continue to help those you contempt? Do you not wonder if they will turn against you one day?"
Admittedly, Shadow couldn't agree more. He was no fool, understanding the wolf's questions only acted as a means to distract him. There were several people out there who doubted the hedgehog's morale. This didn't matter to him. Even if the whole world banded together against him, Shadow still had Rouge and Omega by his side, the only two he considered true friends.
Since recovering his memories, Shadow had matured greatly. He's assured, confident, understood who he truly was, even going as far as to work with the people he once considered enemies within the past. No longer did he fall for temptations of vengeance and domination. It didn't matter why he was created. He was his own person now, someone who chose his own path.
Today, that path was to defeat his opponent and ensure victory.
Grinning softly with newfound confidence, Shadow raised his arm while wrapping his free hand around his wrist, detaching one of his Inhibitor Rings. "I don't doubt there are terrible people in this world. But I've come to understand there are those who would sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Sonic, as much as he irritates me at times, will always fight for what he believes in. As will I."
By now, Shadow swapped positions, now getting ready to remove his second ring. "As long as we draw breath, nothing will stand in our way. That is why I am going to defeat you today, Chax."
The Inhibitor Rings dropped to the ground, releasing the restraints that held his true power at bay. Shadow closed his eyes, tapping into the greater power within himself. Everyone spectating the event couldn't avert their eyes, fascantined with the growing energy. Traces of orange energy surrounded the hedgehog, releasing the limit breaking power that resided within.
Serenity panicked, fearing the tide of the battle was about to change drastically. She jumped to her feet, screeching towards her ally. "Chax, knock him off! Do it before he powers up! DO IT NOW!"
While hearing her pleas amongst the growing energy howling throughout the air, Chax made no effort to intervene. Fascinated with the growing power, he stood idly by, wanting to face his opponent at the peak of his power. As a true warrior, Chax respected the hedgehog enough to not catch him off guard with a sneak attack, waiting with patience.
Realising Chax wasn't going to attack prematurely, Rouge grinned slyly and faced the opposite team. "You guys are in for a wild ride."
Finally allowing his body to adjust to the sudden increase of energy, Shadow roared with a sickening thunder, unleashing the tremendous energy that formed an impenetrable barrier around himself. His strength and speed increased, pushing him far beyond his previous state. Now a walking dynamo of power, Shadow charged forward, skating at a much greater speed than before.
Chax charged as well, intending to meet his opponent halfway. The warriors sped forward, surrounded in their respective auras of orange and purple. Shadow and Chax's fists struck against the other, unloading a colossal burst of force in its wake. Energy forms of lightning streamed from their combined impact, knocking up chunks of the stage throughout the area, igniting the air with intensity. As the two traded blows, further lightning fractured and thundered. Repeatedly slamming into each other, their combined power projected auras of intense energy before breaking away, forming a shock wave that created a powerful force of winds, brushing up against anyone nearby.
After one too many clashes, Chax rushed in to swipe at Shadow's side, propelling himself forward with a momentum that few would dare to try and stop. Shadow tapped Chax's forearm to vault over it, manoeuvring down before driving both feet into Chax's jaw. The force of the blow caused a flash of orange energy, sending the warrior spinning back across the air.
Chasing after him, Shadow quickly overtook the airborne Chax, striking his exposed side with a deafening crack that shook all of the arena, producing an orange flash of lightning to explode from his fur. It momentarily stunned Chax, but the wolf swiftly swung his arm out and slammed his fist into the back of Shadow's head.
The impact caused the air around them to expand like a balloon. Violent air pressure blew around them, creating a deafening explosion that followed, all the while Shadow fell down with a thunderous crash. He quickly ricocheted from the strike, chasing up in his orange aura. He slammed his outstretched fists into Chax's gut, forcing the wolf to gasp aloud from the impact, breaching his tightened durability and sending him away. He swung his arm to retaliate, only to fall short as Shadow bent down and grasped his wrist tightly.
He threw out his fist, striking it hard into Chax's gut, driving it with such force that his back rebounded with the intensity of his impact. Chax winced in response from each painful punch, puncturing the sky around them with vibrant flashes of energy. Using his only free hand, he swung it towards the Ultimate Life Form.
Shadow caught his other fist as well, pulling the two arms down hard enough to boost himself up above the wolf, striking his right knee into his chin with a crackling impact and briefly dazing Chax. With his target stunned, he let go of the arms and struck his foot into Chax's face, causing him to roll over within the sky.
As his brain thrummed with discomfort and dizziness, Chax began to feel doubt and fear tiptoe within the corners of his mind, emotions he never thought he would feel. Had the hedgehog been toying with him all along? Had all of their previous battles merely been for show? With every blow he inflicted, Shadow would retaliate with just as much force. He was outmatched.
Chax's vision finally cleared just in time to see Shadow racing towards him, his aura painting a long streak of orange. He threw out his arms, intending to crush him in mid-flight, but would find him striking empty air. Shadow slid between the wolf's legs, flipping to be perfectly vertical and upside down. Shadow swung his arms forward, charging powerful energy between his grasp.
As Chax turned around to swing his fist towards Shadow, the hedgehog discharged two dual beams of energy and fired, consuming the wolf into a tunnel of energy. Chax felt himself flung across the sky, trailing a blaze of fire and electricity in his wake before an explosion followed, consuming him into a force of energy. The force from the unfolding orange-yellow flames of the detonation rocked the whole arena, visibly shaking it with as much intensity as an earthquake tremor.
Chax slammed against the ground, groaning in anguish as the damage inflicted from each blow sunk in. No longer did the great power he wielded protect him from harm. Any durability he previously wielded was now gone, leaving him vulnerable to damage. He desperately pushed himself out of the ground, positioned on his hands and knees for balance.
At that moment, Shadow calmly landed in front, placing both feet near the wolf's face. He crossed his arms, showing no signs of fatigue in spite of their devastating battle. Chax grunted and tightened his fist, attempting to strike one more time. Shadow caught his wrist, bending it to one side. Chax roared as he felt bones snapping like twigs. Before his hand broke, Shadow raised his free hand and struck him across the cheek, bringing the wolf down to his knees once more.
Chax fell silent, emotions mixed as he contemplated the situation. Mere moments ago, the match had been in his favour, keeping up with three opponents at once. Now the black hedgehog had overpowered him with this sudden increase of pure energy. Accepting this defeat, Chax lowered his head with shame, knowing the rest of his team were counting on him to win.
"Go ahead," Chax spoke softly. "Knock me off the arena."
Shadow paused, tilting his head curiously. Expecting a surprise attack, the hedgehog stepped back out of grabbing distance. He raised one hand, charging a small energy blast within his palm. Without warning, Shadow's hand suddenly trembled before his whole body suddenly erupted with energy, dark electric shocks emerging whole. He roared and collapsed, shaking uncontrollable as raw energy burst.
"SHADOW!" Rouge shrieked, jumping to her feet to help her ally. Before she could do so, Knuckles and Silver restrained her arms. Intervening now would result in an automatic disqualification, something they couldn't afford after coming far. As much as she wanted to deny it, deep down she knew Shadow wouldn't let them assist if it meant losing victory.
Shadow continued to cry out in anguish. Having used his full power after so long had taken its toll, forcing his body to endure tremendous pain and revert him to his regular appearance. His body broke down from pushing so far beyond their natural limits. Confused with this sudden change of events, Chax watched Shadow wither in pain mere inches away. Pushing himself upwards, he stumbled to his feet, briefly pausing to wipe the blood dripping from his face.
Desperately trying to sustain himself before the wolf could recover, Shadow pushed himself to stand, but couldn't even lift an inch as the growing signs of fatigue appeared, leaving him in a depleted state as he was left struggling to even stand, clutching himself in distress. The severe pain had forced him into unconsciousness.
Chax stumbled forward, curiously observing the now defenceless hedgehog. With the third and final opponent in submission, his confidence returned once more, eager to finish the battle before further interference. Before he could reach, a single ball of flame collided with the side of his face, breaking his concentration. Grunting, he turned towards the source, spotting a familiar princess standing against him once more.
Blaze lowered her hand, inhaling sharply to regain her stamina. Her distraction bought Sonic enough time to stumble his way towards the Ultimate Life Form, kneeling down to help him. He grabbed both Inhibitor Rings and attached them to Shadow's wrists. The rings' effects immediately took control, stopping Shadow's outburst of power and limiting his strength. Finally relieved of the pain, the black hedgehog exhaled with relief.
Growing enraged at their constant interference, Chax moved forward to attack the blue hedgehog in retribution, insisting on finishing this prolonged battle. His intentions were removed as Blaze' fist collided against his face, knocking him to the ground with a sickening thud.
He spun and tripped her down, staggering to his feet once more. Refusing to fall victim again, Blaze bounced forward and tackled him by the waist, launching them a small distance away. Chax collided with the ground, groaning with anguish, his weakened power no longer gifted him with heavy durability. He kicked Blaze away with some effort just in time to block a sharp kick from Sonic.
Stepping firmly on the hedgehog's shoe to hold him in position, Chax unleashed heavy blows into his face, determined to knock him down once and for all. Sonic groaned with every strike, raising his arms to block the heavy blows while urgently trying to tug his sneaker free.
Fortune favoured him as a small fireball collided with Chax, stunning him long enough for Sonic to break free. He took notice of one of Chax's exposed injuries and struck, inflicting enough pain for the wolf to release his hold. Swiftly regaining his composure, Chax seized Sonic by his arm and tossed him away. Narrowly avoiding another surprise attack from Blaze, he spun and grasped at her wrist. "I won't fall for that again!"
To his horror, the princess grinned. " I agree."
Raising her free hand, Blaze surrounded the two of them in a ball of flame, concealing the fighters from everyone's sight. The flames enclosed before bursting outwards, throwing the warriors from their positions. Chax landed on his side, covered in ashes as his fur singed from the surprise attack. Blaze barely landed on her feet, immediately cringing with anguish. The explosion tore away her left sleeve, exposing her damaged arm. She clutched at her injury, breathing sharply to compose herself to avoid showing any sign of weakness.
Gritting his jaws softly, Chax pushed himself up once more with the little strength that remained. Blaze prepared to make her final stand, refusing to back down in spite of her condition. A soft place placed on her shoulder, gently moving her to one side. Sonic stood by her side, ready to fight once more. He fared no better, concentrating hard just to stand on his own two feet. They breathed softly, the lack of breath felt through their bodies brought out a feeling of tiredness and lethargy. Their lungs worked to bring in the much needed oxygen to recover, even as they felt like they were drowning in the air. Despite their incredible stamina, they were running on reserved energy now.
Blaze slowly turned, breathing a sigh of relief to see the Ultimate Life Form back on his own two feet. "Shadow, are you all right?"
Shadow stumbled forward, one hand clenched tightly around his other arm. His body trembled with fatigue, having no more energy to call on to sustain himself back to full strength. Concerned he was going to fall, Blaze rushed to his side, gently placed both hands over his shoulders to steady his balance. In other circumstances, Shadow would have brushed away this gesture, but in spite of his pride, he was secretly thankful for her aid.
"Shadow," Sonic spoke softly, his voice lacking strength. "You shouldn't be up."
Shadow turned towards his former rival, offering the smallest of grins. "What kind of teammate would I be if I stood by and watched you get pummelled?"
Though concerned for the black hedgehog's health, Sonic offered a supportive thumbs up. The trio's eyes darted forward as a small chuckle poured from the wolf's mouth. Before long, he laughed, howling with enthusiasm. Concerned yet surprised by the sudden shift in personality, the heroes wondered if their endless persistence finally caused the wolf to snap. But his laugh carried no hint of frustration or anger. He was actually happy, cheershing in the experience. Sonic was the first to realise his opponent was experiencing joy, their battle awakening the small child within. The blue hedgehog couldn't stop himself from chuckling in return.
In spite of his beaten and bruised body, Chax's willpower was stronger than ever. His laughing ceased before he suddenly roared, his deep baritone echoing through the arena. Though exhausted, Sonic and Shadow summoned the strength to bellow fearlessly in return, asserting their determination. They flung themselves forward, awkwardly avoiding the wolf's grasp. The hedgehogs literally threw themselves into Chax, knocking him backwards momentarily.
Chax's grin raised as he stumbled forward, beginning to trade belows with Sonic and Shadow once more. With everyone running on fumes, their blows were sluggish, lacking the same weight they carried beforehand. Every sluggish blow they threw and received felt like their last. Chax's fist rammed itself into Sonic's stomach, briefly winding him as he tumbled over. Taking advantage of his position, Sonic wrapped his arms around Chax's hand, yanking him down and restraining him long enough for Shadow to deliver a sharp kick to his head. Upon impact, Sonic released his hold and Chax stumbled backwards. Only mildly hurt, Chax shook off their pain and advanced.
As he closed in, Sonic and Shadow moved out of harm's way, revealing Blaze channelling her flames within her grasp. She fired the scorching beam forward. Chax crossed his arms over his face to block, but the blast carried enough strength to launch him backwards. Sonic and Shadow pursued him closely. Blaze roared and clasped both her hands together, unleashing a volley of three fire blasts from her grasp. The blasts split up into different directions, passing Sonic and Shadow before they collided with Chax, knocking the wolf around.
As Chax struggled to recover, Sonic and Shadow suddenly appeared from both sides, grasping a hand each around his throat, desperately trying to choke him into submission. Growling sharply, Chax slammed both hands into their chests before taking a hold of their wrists, throwing the hedgehogs into the sky. He shifted focus towards Blaze, charging forward to attack. Blaze held her ground, unleashing a barrage of fire blasts to keep him at bay. They did little to stop him in his tracks as he swiftly closed the distance between them, kicking the princess aside with a sharp strike from his foot.
Sonic and Shadow, still lingering within the air, desperately raced forward to help. The latter suddenly outstretched his arm towards his teammate. "Sonic, take my hand!"
Entrusting Shadow with whatever plan he was conducting, Sonic grasped the Ultimate Life Form's hand. The hedgehog's held each other tightly as they curled together into one large, blue and black tornado, racing around with incredible speed. As they built up enough momentum, Shadow hurled Sonic directly towards their opponent. The blue hedgehog tucked himself into a ball, racing through the air with amazing velocity.
With Chax's attention focused on Blaze, he fell victim to their coordinated attack, not expecting the hedgehogs to have retaliated so quickly. Sonic rammed directly into his side, the force taking them away towards the edge of the arena. Determined to not let Chax escape from their battle once again, Sonic held the wolf's arm within a death grip, refusing to let go. His feet rapidly pressed against the ground, intending to force the wolf out of the tournament.
Surprised to see Sonic holding his arm, Chax roared and slammed Sonic against the ground repeatedly, trying to force the hero to release his powerful hold. With every strike against the ground, Sonic cried out in anguish, but he continued to cling tightly around Chax's arm for dear life, knowing he only had to hold on for a little longer before his teammate returned.
Right on cue, Shadow suddenly came racing towards them head first, arms to his sides while his body flickered with Chaos energy, appearing and disappearing as he desperately tried to sustain his powers. He had nothing left to wield now, forcing his body through strained agony to gain any possible advantage. He drove his fist directly into the wolf's face, using the opportunity to grab Chax's other arm. The hedgehogs summoned every ounce of strength they had left for one final push.
They pushed forward, their lack of stamina forcing their legs to burn in anguish. Sonic and Shadow pushed on, stopping Chax from regaining his footing to fight back. Blaze suddenly squeezed between them, grasping the wolf by his shoulders. The trio roared with resolution, driving the wolf back with every ounce of reserved strength. Shadow's Chaos energy continued flicking, barely visible to the untrained eye. Team Sonic no longer wielded the power to actively fight. Their last hope to ensure victory was this final push, praying the wolf no longer wielded the strength to push them back. One by one, their friends in the bleachers stood up, applauding their bravery. Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Rouge, Silver, Espio, Charmy and Vector cried out in unison.
"Almost there, guys!"
"Sonic, Shadow, Blaze, beat that guy!"
"You can do this, Sonic!"
"I believe in you, Blaze!"
"We're counting on you, Shadow!"
"You can win this, guys!"
"Focus on your spirits!"
"Beat that wolf, guys!"
"You're so close!"
Summoning their final traces of stamina, Sonic, Shadow and Blaze finally pushed Chax towards the edge of the stage, racing forward with every last ounce of energy. Seconds before their feet left the ground, Shadow unexpectedly threw out his hand, shoving Blaze away. Not expecting the Ultimate Life Form to aggressively push her, Blaze stumbled backwards, frantically waving her arms to halt her movement. She screeched to a halt right at the edge of the stage. Acrophobia immediately kicked in, forcing Blaze's instincts to react as she threw herself backwards away from certain doom.
The princess threw up her head just in time to see Sonic, Shadow and Chax plummet towards the water below. Having realised Shadow had pushed her away to stop her from falling as well, Blaze sighed with relief before casting her gaze towards the large monitor above, the camera capturing her falling teammates. Even as the stage became a blur in the distance, the hedgehogs refused to let go of the wolf. Chax's eyelids shortened as his strength finally faltered, accepting the battle was over. The trio smashed into the water below, their combined weight created a thundering impact. The water settled before long, leaving no sign of the three fighters below.
"Unbelievable! Sonic, Shadow and Chax have been eliminated!"
Beneath the water's surface, Sonic frantically moved his arms like he was climbing rocks but it's only water around him. The water that washed around his body prevented access to precious air. His brain went into full panic, forcing Sonic to claw through the thin liquid that threatened to invade his lungs. Small air bubbles began to burst from his mouth, running out of reserved oxygen at rapid speed. His thoughts were beginning to go groggy, his limbs slowing down and stopping.
The panic finally settled as a blurred black figure swam towards him, grasping Sonic's wrist before towing the both of them upward to the daylight above. The second Sonic's head burst from the water, he gasped for fresh air, coughing out the small traces of water he unintentionally swallowed. Shadow held one arm around Sonic's shoulders, stopping him from sinking again. The tournament's staff were only seconds behind, hurling Sonic out of the water with ease. Surprisingly, Shadow accepted their aid as well.
Sonic sat at the edge, grasping the fresh towel tightly around his shoulders. His eyes darted around the water, relieved to see Chax had climbed out of the water under his own strength. The wolf briefly locked eyes with the hedgehogs, staring them down intently with his stoic demeanour. A smile suddenly appeared over his face. He nodded, having a newfound respect for the opposing team. Even as his body trembled from the cold water and lack of energy, Sonic shakily raised his hand, offering a thumbs up.
From the stage, Blaze watched the events unfold on the large monitor above. Relieved her friends were unharmed, she finally dropped her guard and collapsed onto her knees. The battle was finally over. She could rest now, as could the rest of her friends. The tournament had truly pushed everyone beyond their limitations, bringing out inner strengths they never knew they wielded. Blaze exhaled, wanting nothing more than to return home and recover her strength. Her desires were swiftly broken as Jit's powerful voice thundered throughout the arena.
"The tournament is over! Team Etastie has been eliminated! Team Sonic is the winner! Ladies and gentlemen, give a round of applause for the sole survivor! Princess Blaze the Cat!"
Blaze opened her eyes, the sounds of the crowd becoming part of the happy centre of her brain, reaching in and pulling out joy. The cheers come as the sound of happy soles running upon a sun-warmed pier. As her strength slowly recovered, Blaze shakily embraced their thundering cheers, no longer uneased by the thousands of eyes casting towards her.
She unexpectedly bounced into the air, twirling with grace. "Yes! I bested them all!"
The princess landed on her feet, happily waving her hands for the crowd. As her moment of joy finally settled, Blaze suddenly remembered her royal status. She straightened her stance, placing one hand over the other before bowing her head. "I mean, splendid."
The crowd continued applauding, their cheers rising around the arena as if their hearts had learned how to fly together. The second Sonic and Shadow had rejoined the rest of their team, the group raced forward onto the stage, congratulating each other on a job well done. Sonic and Shadow, having not fully recovered yet from their battle, were forced to rely on support from the others. Knuckles held Sonic upwards, one arm placed around his shoulder. Shadow allowed Rouge to rest her hand on his shoulder for support, though he insisted he would be fine soon.
"You were amazing, Blaze!" Cream exclaimed as she threw her hands around the princess' waist.
Blaze smiled, leaning down to pat her friend softly on the shoulder. "Thank you, Cream, but I couldn't have done it alone. Sonic, Shadow, Silver. Thank you all."
"We're a team, Blaze, it's what we do," Sonic weakly reassured, shakily holding up two fingers.
Silver, while grateful for her kind praise, couldn't shake away the guilt that lingered within his stomach. "Blaze, I'm sorry I couldn't have done more to help. I got knocked out when you needed me most, and-"
"Silver!" Blaze cut him off sharply. Her voice turned gentle, easing the future warrior's concerns. "It's okay. Don't be so naïve. You saved me from certain defeat. I will never forget that."
Relieved she was not mad at him, Silver smiled. "Anytime."
The princess shifted her gaze towards Shadow, who was quick to carry his usual impassive expression, standing firm with both arms crossed. "Shadow, you were an excellent leader. Thank you for standing by us to the end."
Shadow almost replied, but couldn't muster the words. Instead, he nodded with appreciation to her compliments. Rouge, who continued supporting him, playfully rammed her elbow into his ribs. The hedgehog grunted, turning towards his best friend with a frown. She laughed, always taking pleasure in tormenting the hedgehog whenever possible.
"Princess Blaze!"
Everyone's expression dropped as the familiar queen's voice rang out. They all collectively shifted their gaze, confirming their suspicion. Team Etastie approached, having returned the stage as well while the others conversed. Blaze snarled, instinctively pulling Cream behind her protectively. The rest of Team Sonic stepped forward in her defence, preparation for an unexpected rematch in spite of their conditions. Their concerns eased as Serenity showed no trace of hostility. To their astonishment, she bowed her head with respect, the rest of her team following suit.
"It was an honour to face you in combat," Serenity said with sincerity.
Shocked yet grateful by this sudden gesture, Team Sonic relaxed their stances, moving forward to converse with the opposing team. Everyone showed good showmanship as they spoke with one another with several congratulations to exchange.
"Princess Blaze, if you ever find yourself having a moment to spare, please visit the Etastie Empire," Serenity requested with a small smile. "We would be honoured to have you there."
Returning the gesture, Blaze bowed her head. "It would be my pleasure, Queen Serenity."
Ozor shook Silver's hand with admiration, now sporting a fresh cut over his cheek as a result of the future warrior's earlier attack, though he seemed to carry the injury with pride. "You got heart, kid. But remember what I said to you before. You can't afford to play fair out there. There's always gonna be someone who won't show you mercy. Keep that in mind. It may be the difference between saving someone you care for."
While Silver didn't fully agree with the jackal's words of wisdom, he nodded nevertheless. "I will try my best."
Tiny the Panda, now sporting a swollen eye from his earlier confrontation, playfully bumped his fist against the echidna's shoulder. "You got me clean with that right hook!"
"I gotta admit, you almost had me worried there for a moment," Knuckles chuckled half-heartedly. "Sorry about the eye, by the way."
Tiny nonchalantly shrugged. "Not my best feature. Say, have you ever tried your luck in boxing? I think you'd be pretty good."
Intrigued by the offer, Knuckles slyly grinned. "Keep talking."
Revon stepped forward, cupping one hand over the other before bowing with respect to the detective. "I have crossed many warriors in my life, but you were the strongest one yet, Espio. Your Ninjutsu is to be commended."
Espio returned the gesture. "As is your Muay Thai, Revon."
Tabitha, after donning her hat and coat, approached the treasure hunter with admiration. "That was a bold move dragging us both out like that. What made you so sure I couldn't get free?"
"Honestly, it was a gamble," Rouge admitted. "There was always a chance it didn't have to go my way, but when you work with the Government for so long, you pick up a thing or two about trusting your gut."
Vath stood nearby, approaching both of the hedgehogs he had the honour of battling. He chuckled, asserting his self-confidence. "Both you boys were lucky we didn't get to finish our battle. Next time, I'll show you both true strength."
Shadow huffed in disagreement. "You got lucky I switched places with Sonic. We'll meet again on the battlefield one day."
"Look forward to it," Vath agreed.
Sonic grinned, eager to have a rematch with the pangolin one day as well. He averted his gaze towards Chax, who continued to stare off into the distance, still unwilling to engage in gossip. Nevertheless, the wolf nodded in acknowledgement. The blue hedgehog chuckled to himself, secretly hoping one day he would grow strong enough to beat Chax alone, a day that couldn't come soon enough.
The two teams collectively averted their gaze towards the approaching figure. Jit the Eagle, the one responsible for putting this whole event together, hopped from the mobile platform carrying him towards the stage. He carried a small briefcase within his wings as he approached the teams, congratulating them on a job well done.
"You all fought very bravely, but I'm afraid there can be only one winning team," Jit said as he presented the briefcase towards Shadow, their team leader. "Congratulations on your victory, Team Sonic! The Chaos Emeralds are all yours."
Shadow outstretched his hand to claim their prize, struggling slightly as his arms were still sore. He opened the briefcase, the Emeralds illuminated his face with more shades of colour than a rainbow. Rouge peaked over his shoulder, entwined by the beautiful and perfectly crafted Emeralds. Satisfied to see the eagle had kept his word, Shadow shut the case, unintentionally forcing Rouge to frown with disappointment.
However, the hedgehog couldn't stop himself from being overly cautious. If they were attacked, he needed both hands free. He passed the briefcase over towards Tails, entrusting their care in the young fox's hands. "Keep hold of these until we make it back to Mystic Ruins. We'll distribute them between us there."
Tails nodded in agreement. "You can count on me."
"Congratulations on your victory, Team Sonic," Jit praised once more. "I hope to see you all again in next year's tournament."
"I've been meaning to ask," Sonic spoke up, catching their host's attention. "How exactly did you get your hands on the Chaos Emeralds?"
"Yeah, I've been wondering that, too," Knuckles agreed.
Jit shrugged lightly. "It was quite simple. You see-"
His explanation was suddenly cut short as Rouge unexpectedly tightened her stance, her ears perked with interest. "Something's coming."
Everyone glanced over their shoulders, searching for the approaching force. When there was nothing in sight, Amy raised her eyebrows sceptically. "Are you sure, Rouge?"
"Trust me, hon, these ears aren't just for show," Rouge reassured, confident in her abilities.
All fell silent before a soft rumbling whistled through the air. A single tremble quierved beneath their feet. Without warning, the intensity suddenly increased, shaking the whole arena. The crowd panicked, fearing the island was experiencing a powerful earthquake, perhaps even a volcano erupting. Little did they know an earthquake was their least of their worries. The warriors on the stage turned around as a large shadow casted them in darkness, a large figure blocking out the sunlight, its powerful engines roaring throughout the air.
A giant humanined gold-coloured robot loomed before them, wielding a tall red shield in one hand with a gold lance in the other. While the crowd looked on with astoundment, Sonic and his friends recognised this robot all too well. The Egg Emperor, a powerful mass-produced robotic mech they faced in combat long ago, slammed its feet on the stage. The sickening thud briefly caused the stage to shake as a familiar laugh echoed from the robot's speakers, one they recognised all too well.
"Hohoho! Thank you all for kindly retrieving the Chaos Emeralds for me. If you would be so kind as to hand them over, I won't have to reduce this island to ashes!"
Sonic clenched his fist tightly. "Eggman!"
"Looks like the good doctor couldn't stay away after all," Shadow agreed, gently moving Rouge away as he prepared to make his stand.
"Quick, get everyone out of here!" Sonic ordered.
"G-g-good idea!" Jit agreed, hastily leaping away from the stage. He bellowed orders to the tournament's staff, who were quick to stay calm in this crisis, escorting everyone out of the arena.
Blaze grabbed the bee's attention. "Charmy, take Cream and get yourselves to safety!"
"What, why?" Charmy whined. "I wanna fight, too!"
"She's right, Charmy," Espio agreed, taking a stance against the giant robot. "It's too dangerous for you both."
Charmy crossed his arms, pouting with annoyance. "This is so unfair."
"If you do this, I'll convince Vector to raise your allowance," Espio added.
"Done!" Charmy exclaimed, grabbing Cream's hand as they both took to the sky, racing away from danger.
The Egg Emperor's metallic face peered down towards the team, specifically locking eyes with his greatest enemy. "What's wrong, Sonic? You're looking a little worse for wear."
Sonic grunted in return, masking his exhausted state with anger. Deep down, he couldn't deny the reality of the situation. He was far from full strength, barely able to stand on his own two feet without support. The rest of his team didn't fare any better. Half of them were exhausted while the other half carried extensive injuries. Even with their help, this wasn't going to be the same as their usual victory.
"I'll ask you one more time, you little blue pest," Eggman said aloud. "Give me the Emeralds, and I may grant you all a quick demise."
Refusing to give into the doctor's demands, Sonic chuckled softly, back to taunting his greatest nemesis. "Don't you ever get bored of our little song and dance routine, Eggman? We know how this is going to play out: you make a big speech about world domination, I reply with a witty comment, we fight, I win and you run away while cursing my name. Sound familiar? And what's with using the same robot? Running out of creative ideas, Egghead?"
While he couldn't see the doctor from outside of his robot, Sonic could only imagine the growing frown on his enemy's face. Eggman roared from inside, slamming the lance against the shield assertively. "Don't say I didn't warn you, Sonic!"
By now, the arena had been evaporated by its occupants. With no concerns about civilians being in harm's way, Team Sonic readied themselves for battle. Tails, Amy and Vector stayed by their side, unwilling to allow their friends to get hurt. The fox placed the small briefcase within his backpack while withdrawing several of his self-invented gadgets to wield in battle. Amy threw out her hand, summoning her Piko Piko Hammer.
"Whoa!" Ozor gasped. "How did you do that?"
The jackal's exclamation caught their attention, realising Team Etastie were still present, choosing to fight alongside the heroes in battle. In other circumstances, Sonic would have been hesitant to accept outside help, but the team had more than proven their abilities in the tournament. In their weakened state, Sonic knew they needed all the help they could get.
Serenity stood by Blaze's side, summoning ice blasts within her grasp. "It would be an honour to fight alongside you, Princess Blaze."
Blaze copied her movements, welding flames around her hands. "It would be my honour as well, Queen Serenity."
Ozor threw out his hand, forming an energetic blade around his wrist as he turned towards the future warrior. "Follow my lead, kid. You might learn a thing or two."
Silver grinned, calling on his psychokinesis powers. "I'm ready to go!"
Tiny pounded his giant fists together, asserting his dominance over the large robot. He turned towards Knuckles, offering a confident grin. "Want to help me pound this robot into the ground?"
Knuckles threw up his namesakes in response. "I thought you'd never ask!"
Revon shifted into his combat stance, inviting the detective to stand by his side. "Espio, let us combine our skills and vanquish this evil from the world."
Espio joined the gila monster, all the while he slid into his own stance. "Agreed. Evil must die."
Tabitha removed her hat and coat once again, turning around towards the treasure hunter as she ascended towards the sky. "Think you still got what it takes?"
Rouge chuckled in agreement, joining the owl within the air. "Let's see who can do the most damage."
Vath bounced forward, stretching his razor sharp claws in anticipation. He locked eyes with the Ultimate Life Form, offering a cheeky smile. "Unless you're planning on taking a nap, what do you say we take down this robot?"
Shadow grinned in response. "For once, we agree on something."
Sonic stepped forward, even as his legs trembled with muscle cramps. He approached the wolf, gently patting him on the shoulder. "What do you say, Chax? Up for some teamwork?"
Chax narrowed his eyes, contemplating the decision very briefly. A smile crept on the corner of his mouth before he stood by the blue hedgehog's side. "Let us see what this Eggman can do!"
The two teams stood together as one, no longer rivals seeking to surpass the other. They prepared to fight as one against the stronger threat, refusing to allow the good doctor to get his hands on the sacred gems. The large robot scanned the area, counting the several fighters taking a stand against him. Arrogant as ever, Eggman howled with laughter. "You're all fools if you think you can stop me!"
The Egg Emperor raced forward, readying its giant weapons. Simultaneously, the combined team charged forward, entering one final battle. No longer was this a tournament between fighters seeking to claim a prize. This was a fight to the end, one that determined their world's future with a single goal in mind.
Defeat Doctor Eggman.
Just when you thought it was going to end. Thank you to everyone for tuning in again. Tune in next week to see the battle against Doctor Eggman. As always, don't be afraid to review.
