Seriously, the whole Phoebus-sounds-familiar dilemma was bothering me. We had already entered DR. PHOEBUS'S VET/HUMAN CLINIC OR WHATEVER YOU CALL IT. We were in the waiting room, and we were not happy. A satyr, a Cyclops, three teenage demi-gods, and a 3-year-old demi-goddess with murderous thoughts. That's not exactly comfortable.
I tried to relax myself by sending Percy to ask when the doctor would see us. Evalyn was sitting next to Clarisse, all relaxed. She was (and I swear, I've never thought I'd find an appropriate moment to say this) chillin' like a villain. Percy came back a few seconds later, saying that the doctor would see us very soon, emphasizing very. I sighed, glad we could get out of this place soon. Then I started thinking of other things, like my newly found bro, Jason. Gods, I missed him more that you think. And he turned out to be a hero! I'm so proud of him. Too bad he couldn't find Percy and rescue…..him…..OH. MY. GODS.
Clarisse, Evalyn, Grover and I had probably all been thinking the exact same thing, because all of a sudden, in the quiet waiting room, we all screamed "Aaaaaaahh! Percy! You're not missing!" Then Grover cried on Percy, while Percy's face was the perfect image of confused.
We were explaining to him everything that had happened while he was gone. We asked him questions, but he didn't answer any. He said he doesn't remember. When we were done, exactly 3 hours had passed. I glared at Percy. "Very soon, huh?"
Percy bit his fingernails. "Well, that's what the secretary said."
"Ok, well I'm about to give that secretary a piece of my mind. I'm gonna sucker-punch that b*tch in the mouth. I'm gonna take a crap in his mouth. I'm going to stick my foot down his mouth so hard, he'll be crapping toenails for the rest of his life. I'm going to punch him so hard in the guts, there's no way he'll be able to be the world's first pregnant man. I'm gonna-"
"Excuse me, the doctor will see you now," said the secretary. Who was this secretary? Why, Hermes himself. I swear, I saw Grover almost take a crap right then and there. I didn't laugh, because Hermes had overheard every beautiful thing I said about him. Laughing would only make things worse.
"Uh, sir, Percy told us that you said it wouldn't take long." Who said that? Take a S.W.A.G. (super-wild-ss-guess.)
"No, he asked me, 'Sir, when will the doctor be seeing us?' and I said 'Just a second', and then he smiled and left," Hermes corrected.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that glared at Percy. Then, the doctor stepped close and spoke:
"Children ask for help.
They bring Daughters of Hades.
'Cause I'm so awesome."
Gasps. "How did you know she's a daughter of Hades?" Grover asked.
He shrugged. "I'm the frickin' god of prophecy. I know stuff." And then, I realized why Phoebus seemed so familiar. You may slap me all you like, I deserved it. Go on.
"Well, when you're done gawking at my awesome face, you may enter the examination room." He gestured at the room. We all entered without a word.
Evalyn was seated by Apollo (because it is obvious it was him) on his analysis table. He studied her for a moment. Then asked, "What exactly is wrong with her?"
"Well, for one-" I began, but Clarisse interrupted. "We don't exactly know, Lord Apollo."
He sighed. "I guess I'll just give her a quick checkup." He began by selecting a small hammer thing from a bag. He walked up to Ev and tapped her knee gently. Nothing happened. "Maybe I'll just tap it a little harder." He did, and suddenly I had a feeling I should shove Grover out of the way. I did, and a gigantic fireball the size of Zeus' head narrowly missed Grover. Where did that fireball come from? Straight from Evalyn's mouth.
"Hmm, my shoe seems to be on fire," Apollo said, staring at his shoe. It blew out with a whistle from Apollo. Evalyn looked at me, pained, as if asking,"Thalia, what am I?"
Next, he studied her wings (courtesy of Zeus and Boreas) with admiration. He asked her to flap them, stretch them, fold them around her, and all that.
He asked her to read something on a poster, (a poster with a chibi of Apollo saying "A piece of ambrosia a day keeps Apollo away!") but Evalyn asked if we can skip that. He did. Then he asked her to wear earplugs, so "he can see if she can sense vibrations," as he said. Once they were securely on, he turned to the rest of the party.
"Has anyone told her yet? That she's getting godly powers? Because, here's the thing. Evalyn is like a knife. At times, like when she stays ignorant to the fact that she has godly powers, she's useful, but in the wrong hands, or when she finds out we never told her, she will become deadly." We all shook our heads. He sighed, relieved, then turned around again and asked, "Can you feel me talking?"
"Uh, I don't know what you said, but I felt you taking, yeah." Then Apollo turned again, with a serious face this time.
"I have to tell you guys something. One, don't stray from the Ebony Road anymore, unless you want Thalia to die. Two, remember: keep those combat boots on at all times. Three, don't freak out or anything, it's just that I wanted to tell you guys that you will succeed this quest, but a warning to you: One of you will not be returning home with the others."
Immediately, I freaked out. I assumed it was me he was talking about. It had to be me. Evalyn noticed my freaking out and removed the plugs. "What's wrong, Thalia?"
"Anyways," Apollo interrupted, "just pay the bill when you can."
"Bill? What bill? We have no money!" Clarisse screamed, but Evalyn said, "Just put it on my bill, sir." At first, I thought, What? Then I remembered. Hades is rich, his kids are rich. At least they don't rub it in our faces.
As we were leaving, Hermes went up to Evalyn and asked her something. She handed him 2 fistfuls of quarters. Then, louder this time, he said, "Thank you- wait. Gimme the rest!" Evalyn blushed and handed him more quarters.
"Pleasure doing business with you," he said. I asked Evalyn what that was about, and she answered, "Oh, Hermes is my boss. He's the god of tooth fairies, too, so he hired me. I guess that's the condition of the gods for sparing my life."
"You're serious?" I asked. She nodded. "So now you're part fairy, too?"
"Uhh, yup." Man, there are so many things I don't know about this chick! Like when or why she decided to kill me! What the hell happened? We used to be best of friends! And now one of us has to kill the other in order to survive! And are those gray hairs I see on Ev's hair, sticking out the right side?
