/AN: Welcome one and all, to my first attempt at writing Fanficiton, on the one hand, while I would like for y'all to be kind and all that jazz, I'm going to level with you and tell you that this is going to have mistakes. Grammatical, plot-wise, and even mistakes in the canon of the show.
That being said I'm going to try my best. The idea for this fic has been in my head for the past few months and I have only now started to put it into words. This will be a gamer fic that is based on the system of the current 5th edition D&D game. I had been debating doing this in the universe of The Owl House and RWBY, but I eventually chose the Owl House for its smaller and more simple setting. That being said, if this goes well and people end up liking this, then I'll probably end up doing the other one as well.
Final Warning: As you may have noticed, this story is rated T. This is for several reasons: I am still learning my way around fanfiction and to be safe on what is allowed at what rating so, I went to the highest rating possible, I will be including swearing and crude, sometimes dark humor so be ware if that, along with mentions of blood and violence, and finally, there are points that are of a person in a very depressed state and some may be uncomfortable with that (If you are one of those people, you will receive no judgement from me).
This story is a semi SI/OC story so if you don't like that... I hope you have a wonderful day finding another fanfiction to read. Semi-SI/OC in this context means that while the characters life and experiences will be very different from my own, his personality will be mine.
There may be times in this story where something goes against canon and while most will be unintentional, some may have a purpose. As such I will try to leave a note around the points that I have changed.
Disclaimer: I do not own The Owl House, that belongs to Disney, and any other shows, songs or intellectual properties that are referenced in this belong to their respective owners. Believe me, if I owned it, then we would have way more of Malphas the librarian.
With all that out of the way, thank you for taking the time to read my Fanfic.
~Present Day~
"So..." James said, "she finally did it huh."
"Yep." his friend Luz responded, looking every bit as broken as the afternoon silence with their conversation.
They were standing on the sidewalk in front of her house, waiting for the bus. James had told her that as her friend he had to be there when she was sent off to hell on Earth. Which was kind of true. Sure, Luz may not be going to the hell she is thinking of with the "reality" camp, but if things went the way James knew they would. Then we'll, there'd be a whole new type of hell they needed to prepare for.
You see James was internally freaking out as this was either the most vivid dream he had ever experienced, someone had drugged him, or he really had woken up in the world of The Owl House. All along with memories of an alternate life of his, and apparently being the only "human" friend to Luz Noceda. 'Not like she's gonna be making more "human" friends over the next few months anyway,' he thought dryly.
At first, he had panicked as, so much of his life had changed, living in an entirely different state, friends with brand new people, and his "relationship" with his family was very different; seeing as they were all dead. His memories in his new life told them of a T-bone car accident that had left both parties dead on impact, except for him. As such, he ended up living with his god family, or at least he was supposed to. The previous him, like him now, had his fair share of quirks, one of which was his great fear and pain of moving houses. Not for the reason of having to make new friends or a new school, but because the house to him was his familiar blanket of security and it terrified him of being without it. Therefore, when his god-family, who were still back in gator land were preparing to sell the house he lived in now, he provided great opposition. So much, that they agreed to let him stay up Connecticut as, the house was already paid off, and he had been doing a good job of caring for himself for the time being. They still visited on the holidays or had him come down to them, but other than that he had been living alone for the past few months. He was a little confused now as to why they would actually allow that, but he chalked it up to the influences of the cosmic forces that brought him here in the first place.
Now, the previous him wasn't idle though, it's just so happens that he had made a childhood friend in the form of one Luz Noceda. His memories of her were... interesting, to say the least. Apparently, Luz had always had trouble making friends, so when he (or more specifically 'alternate' him) had made friends with her it was about two months before she suggested they become blood brothers, or in this case blood 'siblings'.
...It didn't go well... to say the least...
~Flashback 4 Years Prior~
"Alright, you ready?" The small Luz in front of James asked.
"Aye, though I don't see why we had to use this," James responded, while gesturing to the sacrificial knife Luz had bought from a mystic shop.
"Silly James, of course we needed it," she said as though it was the most obvious thing in the world, which to her it might very well have been. "We need it so that the magic in it can bind us forever as soul siblings."
James was of course, skeptical to say the least, but he went along with it anyway. "Alright," he said conceding "So, who's gonna go first?"
Now, Luz was the one looking tentative about the situation. "Well... uh... your bigger than me so you'll have more blood and won't bleed out as fast," she said, vaguely gesturing at him.
"That just fills me with confidence," he said sarcastically "But, I guess I'll do it."
He went ahead and picked up the small dagger and placed the tip against the pad of his thumb before pressing it until he felt a spike of pain and saw blood be drawn.
"Well, you're up," he stated to, the now, upon further inspection from looking up, unconscious Luz.
'Huh, guess she's squeamish,' he thought matter-of-factly.
~Present Day~
Today, James was 16 years old and 6"3' with a relatively average build. He had brown hair with hints of ginger curls from his father's side along with a pair of soft aquamarine eyes that were almost always covered by a set of thick lensed glasses. 'I just had to get my father's sad excuse for vision, didn't I' he thought bitterly. He typically, like today, wore a pair of exercise shorts and a T-Shirt with either some reference or a bad dad joke. Today's shirt read in green lettering across a black background that "There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who don't." His overall complexion was shaped heavily by his genetic heritage, while Luz was clearly Hispanic in decent, he was mostly German, with a hint of Scandinavian in him, hence his last name of Alderson (or Aldersson, or Alder's son, depending on who you asked).
He could remember his loved ones from his last... or alternate life, he still didn't know what to call it, but he remembered them. He did care for them a lot, but he was honestly bored about his previous life, and the shock of this whole situation had mostly pushed his thoughts of sorrow and loss to the back of his head for now. James knew that later, in a more private setting he would probably break down about his situation, but until then he had work to do.
Camilla or in his case "Mama Camila" as she insisted, he called her, walked over to the sidewalk with a worried smile on her face.
"Oh! Oh, my baby!" she said wrapping her daughter in a hug that looked dangerously tight, and yet Luz's face was impassive. She tried to get some sort of reaction out her daughter by continuing "Now, don't worry. Summer camp is only going to be for three months. You'll be so busy balancing checkbooks and learning to... appreciate public radio, the time will fly by!" However, it's hard to drum up enthusiasm when you yourself sound apprehensive about something.
The only response she got was a pitiful moan before Luz started her rant. "But I don't like any of that stuff. I like editing anime clips to music and- and reading fantasy books with convoluted backstories."
"Amen to that" James said quietly, but apparently not quietly enough as he got a hard glare from Camila. James who wasn't really interested in consummating the union between himself and a sandal, wisely chose to stop talking.
Camila turned back to Luz saying, "Mija, your fantasy world is holding you back. Do you have any friends? Real ones, not imagined, or drawn or reptilian?"
James went to raise his hand in protest, but Camila beat him to it, "Your pretty much her brother at this point and siblings don't count."
Luz looked over to James, expecting him to protest however, James looked pretty thoughtful about the situation. Turning his attention to Luz he gently spoke, "I mean, she's not wrong. We are practically siblings at this point, and while that doesn't mean you aren't my best friend, it would be good for you to have a couple more than just me."
Luz just looked even sadder.
Around this time Camila's phone?... Pager? Began ringing and she quickly said goodbye to them, while Luz gently placed her Azura book in the garbage.
With a quick "Be good" and a kiss to the forehead for each of them she was gone.
'Damn!' He thought bitterly 'Now Imma feel even worse when I don't stop her daughter from running off. Then again, without this Vee is screwed and Lumity wouldn't happen. Ugh... this is gonna come back to bite me one day isn't it' he finished with a mental groan.
~Two Seconds Later~
"Where is it, where is it?!" Luz asked frantically as she dug through the trash like a deranged raccoon.
Her movements and clamor dragged James from the depths of his guilt and fear riddled sanctum in time to hear and see her next actions.
Upon Luz's identification of the "tiny trash thief", she was off, all the while with an excited and slightly frightened best friend.
~Several Hours Later~
"Fuuuuuuuuck" James let out in a low groan.
He was currently sat in a dingy cell several floors up into the infamous Conformatorium.
How did he get here you may ask?
Well, it was all going fine earlier, everything was going how the show went just with James occasionally input, all until the Coven guards showed up.
As the rag-tag group of Eda, Luz, and James were escaping, Eda decided that she really didn't need both humans... that or she just forgot he was running alongside them, and she ended up leaving him behind where he was promptly arrested and carted off to the cell he sat in now.
Internally he was berating himself for his greed. He had remembered that Eda had tossed away both a diamond ring and what looked like the holy grail before she got to Luz's book, and he wanted them. So, while Luz and Eda were having their "skin" conversation, he was quickly stuffing the ring and the grail-like object in the sling bag he had with him for this very reason.
He knew that Luz would come and save him eventually, but he was already debating whether or not to leave Luz to her own adventures while they were on the isles and just do his own thing. Not even one hour into his adventure here and he had already started shifting the timeline, so that now Luz had to rescue him as well as King's crown.
This mental debate had been going on for past hour and a half. He had already taken some time to process the happenings of the day and mourn what he had lost. While there was still lots of lingering pain, he was mostly drained at the moment. So, for a few hours he had literally nothing to do. The cell had some enchantment on it that prevented any scratching or damage being done to it so he couldn't draw. Also, the warden got pretty mad if anyone talked too often or too loudly, so he couldn't make much conversation. The only thing in is cell other than a dingy cot and his backpack that he had stocked with basic supplies was a small brown sack. He theorized that there was an enchanted thread around the neck of the bag since he couldn't get it to open or unravel.
He tried using his knowledge of fantasy worlds to figure out how to open it, but nothing worked. He even considered biting his thumb hard enough to draw blood that he could wipe on it to see if it was "blood-keyed", however in the end he decided against it. Not only would it be incredibly unsanitary to do so in a place like this, but also the obvious fact that if it was indeed "blood-keyed", then it would probably only accept one at a time and the previous owner had most likely already keyed themself to it.
"Ughhh..." he spoke exasperatedly "This is gonna take a while."
"Wait!" He softly exclaimed as he began digging into his bag. Eventually he pulled out his phone and a set of corded earbuds. "That's right, the guards were too incompetent to even search me, or take my bag," James whispered, feeling really stupid with himself.
James quickly opened his music app that he had a couple songs downloaded on just in case he lost reception. Then, after finding the right playlist he laid back against the stone wall and waited.
~Hit The Road, Jack (Nightcore)~
"Okay~" he whispered contentedly "This ain't too bad."
~Outside The Conformatorium~
"Oh my Gosh! I got my best friend locked up in prison!" A frantic Luz shouted from outside the Conformatorium walls.
"Didn't you say earlier he was your only friend? Also keep it down." The legendary Eda Clawthorne admonished.
"He'll be fine... It will just be magically aided unadulterated torture" The Demon King reassured, with a faint bit of joy in his voice.
~In The Conformatorium~
"Salt... Lime... and Tequila, it all gets-"
~Outside The Conformatorium~
Luz only whimpered.
~Back in The Conformatorium~
"Farewell and adieu, too~ you Spanish la-""CRASH!"
James bolted upright from the clamor of the impact. Quickly peeking out of his cell, he was able to see the retreating form of the warden along with a terrified Nosy.
"Welp," he muttered "showtime."
James peaked out between the bars of his cell, allowing him to see the tip-toeing form of his friend several floors up. She was currently struggling to lift the lever to one of the cell doors.
"Luz!" James whisper-shouted as he cupped his hands around his mouth, "Down here."
Luz quickly spun-around and shifted her gaze across the many cells below her before she caught sight of her friend.
"James! Oh, Dios Mio [Oh my God], hold on I'm coming" she called back as she began looking for the stairs down. However, halfway into doing so the small 'rat' on her shoulder pulled on her hair a bit before mumbling something into her ear. Whatever it was, it convinced her to change her mind.
"Just stay put, I'll be back, but I need to do something first" she said after a bit of deliberation. After which she didn't even look back for James' response before darting off the hall.
James, annoyed, sighed heavily before banging his head against the bar in front of him.
~15 Minutes Later~
James watched as Luz flew out into the spiraling center of the tower with the warden on her she began to flip up the cell levers, he once again called out to her. "Luz! Little help?"
However, as Luz doesn't really think things through, she seemed to have forgotten about him and ended up speeding out the door in the center of the tower.
"...You have got to be f-ing kidding me!" He shouted as he watched her retreating form.
"Need a hand?" a light voice from his left questioned.
He looked over to see the small form of his fellow SI, 'Tiny Nose', alongside the two other escaped prisoners.
"That," he responded "would be much appreciated."
James watched as the combined efforts of the fanfiction writer and eye eating prisoner opened up his cell.
"Thank you," he spoke as he made his way out of his cell, mysterious bag in hand "let's get moving."
The other prisoners seemed unsure but followed him down until they reached the hole that the warden had broken out from.
James decided to stay within the tower and out-of-sight as Luz have her speech to the escaped convicts. He knew that lots of these events were what helped Luz develop and that interfering with them could have long lasting consequences.
As the 'weirdos' began tying up the warden and Luz launched the fireworks into their mouth, James got out his phone camera. After he got a short video of the fireworks going off, he put his phone away and walked up to Luz.
The glare James gave his honorary sister was one of both annoyance and a bit of disappointment. He honestly wasn't that mad at her, but he knew he needed to help her learn to think things through beforehand, so he played his act.
"Oh, hey... James," she started off nervously "I'm glad to-"
"Luz," James interrupted, "you're not in trouble. I'm a little annoyed, but you had no idea this would happen. However, you should have taken the time to think things through before running off into a strange portal."
Luz still downcast, mumbled a "Sorry," while she shuffled her shoes.
James let out a low breathe before pulling Luz into a hug "It's fine, as long as your safe."
Luz perked up after a second, and eventually returned the hug. "I never meant to leave you behind, but I had to get something before I left."
"Well, as sweet as seeing you two brats reunite is, we should probably go before the warden comes back" Eda interjected from the side.
They all hopped onto Owlbert; first Eda, then Luz, next was King and Francois, and finally James on the end. They kicked off into the sparkling night sky and flew to The Owl House.
~At The Owl House~
It had been a few minutes after their arrival at The Owl House, minutes that James spent observing the intricate details in the artwork splayed across the ceiling and walls along with many magical artifacts. Currently, Luz was just finishing up her mental debate between Reality Camp and staying in The Boiling Iles. Having been preparing for this moment for the last several hours, James readied his phone's recording feature for the second time that night. He was not a moment too soon, as Luz turned around at that moment, having completed her moving speech to King and Eda to let her live in The Owl House.
"...And while I'm living in The Owl House, maybe~ you could come visit every so often?" She said in an anxious manner.
James gave her a deadpan look "You want me," he said pointing to himself for accentuation "to leave you here, in what is most likely the inspiration for the concept of Hell? Forgive me for the unintended pun, but no way in Hell is that going to happen."
Luz looked positively shattered at that, there were even a couple glassy tears building in the corners of her eyes.
Yet, James continued his speech "...However," he said with considerable emphasis "IF you are willing to take responsibility for all that comes from this excursion, agree to follow any rules I lay out for you while we're here, and consent that if Mama Camila asks, you will confirm that the only reason I didn't say anything to her was in prevention of you possibly running off if I told her. Then, I will stay with you here if that is acceptable to you Mrs. Clawthorne?" He finished, directing the last part to Eda.
"Eww, just call me Eda; Mrs. Clawthorne makes me sound like my mom, "she spat out, in a disgusted manner "But yeah, if you kids are willing to work then I guess I can teach you some stuff"
James looked back to Luz "Are you alright with the terms Luz?"
Luz looked positively ecstatic and as such, along with her flaw of not thinking things through, she quickly agreed with a clamorous "Yes!" That she accentuated with the throwing of both of her hands into the air. Now that he had what he needed, James finished the recording he had, had running behind his back. 'Oh, you poor thing, you haven't had siblings for as long as I have to recognize a trap when you see it. I'm sorry Luz, but you're going to need to take the fall for this one. Both for your growth and development, but also for my safety.' James monologued internally.
~In The Spare Room~
James and Luz entered the small room and set out their sleeping bags on the ground. It was at that point Luz asked one of the many questions that had been bothering her that day.
"Wait, James why do you have a sleeping bag and camping supplies with you?" She voiced with reasonable confusion.
James having planned many times in his life, for if he ever got himself into an isekai situation had thought of this. "Well, I was debating possibly sneaking along with you when you went on your 'trip', so I brought my stuff with me this morning." James also knew that the best lies, contained the truth.
After setting up his bag, James went off to the bathroom to brush his teeth and put his retainers in before going to sleep. When he returned to the room, Luz was already fast asleep with a small dollop of drool already pooling in the corner of his mouth. As he lied down onto his sleeping bag, he realized that his mouth tasted slightly metallic. Swiping a finger along his gum line he noticed that he had ended up aggravating his gums to the point of bleeding. While staring at the small stain of blood on his hand, his eyes were drawn to the small pouch in the corner of the room by his bag. Thinking he had nothing to lose, he quietly grabbed the bag and swiped his bloodied finger along the golden thread.
Astonishing James, a small glow emanated from the thread before it softly pulsed and loosened around the bags neck. Still in a state of shock, James slowly peered inside, but saw only darkness. Taking a risk, he slowly reached his hand into the bag until he touched something metallic. Trying to pull it out he felt it slowly rise before a soft 'click' emanated from the bag.
Everything went dark.
~In James' Dreams~
James found himself in vast sea of empty blackness. Himself trapped upon a small island of light in the swaths of shadow only a couple feet wide.
Shakily rising from the floor, he slowly circumspectated his surroundings. Finding nothing and feeling both frightened and confused he called out.
"Hello?" He spoke warily into the inky void, his gaze every so often returning to the faintly illuminated white flooring just beneath his feet.
It didn't seem like his call would get a response until a faint hum broke the silence. It was a crackly whooshing noise. Not unlike the noise when a tv is switched to the wrong input.
He tried calling out again, "Hello?" a bit louder his voice sailed out into the abyss before him.
He could distinctly hear the noise now it was beginning to buzz in his ears.
"Hello!" James voice cut out against the eerie clamor.
The buzzing got louder... he could tell it was getting closer.
James began to panic "Hello?! Is anyone out there? What do you want?!"
The noise was so close he could begin to start making out what it truly was. The cacophony was the mingled voices of thousands of mutterings. He could barely understand what they were saying however one word keep standing out to him.
"Gift."
James watched as part of the emptiness materialized into a black tendril the reached into his small haven. It began to slowly spiral around him and gently upwards as it grew.
Once it had reached a point about 10 feet high and it trunk was wider than the wheel of a Kat front loader it began to converge on him. As it did so the layered rings began to move clear to each other and meld into another. Strangely he noticed as it did so it would often rapidly fracture and split to the side displaying a bright assortment of colors before seemingly teleporting back to its original position. If he had to put it simply it looked like they were 'glitching'
The tentacles had almost fully converged now, and James' breath and heart rate were constantly attempting to one up each other in speed. As the eldritch ooze finally completed its cocoon as soft yet crisp tone pierced the realm
*Ding*
*Welcome to the D&D System Version 5.2*
James stood there watching as the words materialized upon the cocoon walls in front of him. He didn't truly believe his eyes, his hand gently reached out to contact the screen causing it to fade and a new one to pop up in its place

James, not entirely sure he wasn't tripping of his ass at the moment from magic drugs, tentatively pressed the race section.
Human Variant:
Languages Proficiency: Common and Choose one other
Ability Score Improvement: Choose two
Skill Proficiency: Choose one
Feat: Choose one
Other Traits: Velma Vision
Deciding to go along with things for now James started filling out the sections.
For race he chose Spanish for the other language as he was tired of not understanding what Luz was saying. Then intelligence and dexterity for his ability score improvements. Next, he chose to be proficient in arcana. Finally, James selected the Fey Touched feat because he loved the idea of teleporting.
Curious at the unique trait name, James clicked it causing it to expand with its full description.
Velma Vision: Like a certain turtleneck wearing mystery solver, your eyes suck. As such, you take -10 and disadvantage on all perception checks requiring vision, unless using a corrective tool.
"... ... ...Accurate." James softly muttered.
Moving on from the confirmation of something he has known for years, James continued going through all the sections, slowly crafting a new form that he hoped would prevent an untimely demise.
Overall, the process everything went pretty standard from then on except for his background. When he gently brushed his hand against the glitched section he had an... experience, to say the least. The way he could best describe it was how people spoke of their lives flashing before their eyes when close to death. However, instead of showing him the first friends he ever made or other emotional stuff like that, his visions were more targeted. To be specific, James saw what he eventually determined to be a collection of all the major skills he developed in life. He saw the first time he gave a bird an IV drip, when he first cracked an egg into a well of flour, and the day he met his cat Peabody. When the visions eventually faded from his mind, he saw the list of all the skills he had learned in life, and to be honest he was pretty proud of himself.
With those finished he took a look at his completed character sheet.
