A/N: vivmac1985 wanted to see a bit from S3E18: Rock the Cradle, so here it is! Shhh, it's nap time. ;D
Jack needed coffee. Badly.
The rapidly cooling water did almost as good a job, though. Jack hurried through the rest of his shower, wishing MacGyver hadn't used up all the hot water. Then again, MacGyver had probably fallen asleep mid-shower like Jack had.
Jack finished up and got dressed, then paused at the top of the steps. He didn't want to go back down yet, not if it meant being faced with Jack Jr. again. He wasn't ready for that kind of responsibility!
In the end, though, loyalty to MacGyver won out. MacGyver was up to the responsibility of taking care of a baby, but he was as much out of his depth as Jack was. Funny, Jack would have thought that MacGyver had experience with babies.
"Oh-kay," Jack sighed as he descended the steps, "Well, at least he stopped crying, eh, Mac?"
MacGyver, sitting on the couch with his arms draped loosely around Jack Jr., didn't respond. Jack shrugged, then went to the kitchen to start coffee.
"Hey, Mac, do you have any more of that green goop? If Jack Jr.'s a Dalton -which he's not, but anyway- he's going to be hungry again soon. I know I'm starving."
MacGyver's continued silence gave Jack pause. Jack rounded the counter to get a better look at his friend. He snorted as soon as he did.
Jack Jr. was happily drooling on the collar of MacGyver's jacket. MacGyver didn't notice, as his head was leaning back and his eyes were closed. Sound asleep.
"At least I'm not the only one," Jack chuckled. "Alright, hang on, baby."
Jack Jr. grinned gummily past his mouthful of jacket. Jack turned to get some of MacGyver's improvised baby food ready, then paused at a strong stink. He frowned at Jack Jr., who giggled.
"No wonder you're so happy. Phew!" Jack flapped a hand in front of his nose. "Mac, you've been gassed, no wonder you're unconscious!"
Still nothing. Jack felt a hint of guilt, remembering how he'd passed off baby duty so many times in the night to MacGyver.
"Well… guess it's my turn now. Don't worry about it, Mac."
MacGyver didn't. He continued to not worry about anything until Jack tried to extract Jack Jr. from MacGyver's arms, then he reacted. By tightening his grip on Jack Jr.
"Mac, you're holding a lethal weapon in your lap."
Jack Jr. giggled and squirmed around so he could see Jack. Jack Jr lifted his hands, and Jack's heart melted a little more at his maybe-son's nonsensical babble.
Jack leaned down and gently extracted Jack Jr., fending off MacGyver's attempts to reclaim him. Jack straightened, Jack Jr. fully in his grasp, but MacGyver continued to reach for the baby without waking up. He looked so hopelessly worried in his sleep that Jack couldn't just walk away, so he took Jack Jr.'s teddy bear and put it into MacGyver's grasping hands, not really expecting it to work or to at least wake up MacGyver.
Except it did work and MacGyver never woke up. MacGyver simply accepted the replacement and slumped back down, clutching the teddy bear like… well, a teddy bear!
"Ticking teddy bears," Jack snorted to Jack Jr., "Works well to calm crying babies and distressed MacGyvers. C'mon, kiddo, let's get this smelly thing off of you, huh?"
Jack walked away, fully planning to let MacGyver know the sacrifice he made to let him get a few more minutes' sleep.
It was a plan that lasted all of thirty seconds, long enough for Jack to realize that he didn't know how MacGyver had put together the makeshift diapers. Flustered, he looked at MacGyver and wondered how he was supposed to wake up his friend for emergency assistance.
