Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 83
When Bill and Gabe returned with Gunther, Gabe, using Nathan's desk, went to work writing up his report. Gunther watched Gabe closely as he filled out the who, what, when, and where of the report adding other pertinent details. Nathan and Bill both brought chairs over to the jail cells and began interrogating the prisoners.
"Now, we know that you work for Nate Toliver? Correct?" Nathan began.
Neither of the men wanted to co-operate. "Hmm, still not hungry?" Bill asked.
"We told you it is Toliver, so where's our food?" Clay asked.
"True," Nathan agreed, "Bill, maybe we can give them some coffee to start. What do you think?"
"Sure, they need to wet their whistle, as they'll be talking a lot," Bill nodded, "I'll go grab two cups and be right back."
Nathan continued to prod them, "So men you want to disclose where you have been staying?" Even though he knew where he wanted them to confirm it.
"Out yonder in the country," was all Clay said.
"I go on rounds throughout this area, so why don't I tell you where you stay," Nathan said sharply as he raised his eyebrows. "I've seen you both at the abandoned hunter's cabin. If I recall it's not very clean inside, is it?"
Clay and Jake looked at each other in surprise. Their minds were suddenly snapped into reality and they knew they were up against the inevitable. They had to start talking.
"Yea, well we have no money for much," Jake spoke.
"That cabin doesn't belong to you. Did you contact the owner for permission?"
Nathan asked.
"Ah, no, it's abandoned, how are we spos' to know who to ask?" Clay retorted, shaking his head.
Bill returned with the coffee, "How's it going?"
"Oh, we're just starting. We've got a lot more to go." Nathan looked up at Bill as he handed the men their cups of coffee. "We've established that you work for Toliver and you live in the abandoned hunting cabin," Nathan leaned in and gave them a warning, "What do Toliver and his gang want?"
"He's going to be building a gambling casino near here. He's helping other men to
get it built so he'll get a cut," Jude revealed.
Nathan took a deep breath and looking at Bill thought for a while. Then he addressed the men again, "You need to tell me exactly where they are planning to build. If you help us, it'll be better for you two, especially with what you're already facing with charges of assault and battery." Nathan stood up and stared down at them.
"Will we get some food?" Jude asked.
"Is that all you want, is food? You fools, hasn't it sunk in your hard skulls what you're facing?" Bill was angry. "How about we add attempted murder to the charges? You won't get out of here, except to go to Kingston Penitentiary. Have you heard about that place?"
Jude and Clay started squirming. They knew about the reputation of that prison and they were not wanting to step one foot near there. "All right, all right. We're not working directly for anyone but one of the Toliver gang. He goes by the name of Harvey. He gives us our directions and makes sure we do what we're told." Clay said quickly.
"Yea, we answer to him," Jude confirmed.
"Now you need to tell us why you attacked Rick," Nathan wanted their confession.
The two men looked at each other getting more nervous as the interrogation went on, each of them was sweating profusely. "He was watching the lumber over at the Mercantile. We were told to load up the wagon with some of it. Harvey had given us a warning that we didn't have enough." Jude explained.
"Yea, Harvey was not happy with us, and had threatened not to pay us if we didn't come through," Clay added.
"Why would you be stealing lumber for Harvey?" Nathan inquired.
"For the gambling casino. They were fixin' on building that there casino real fast-like," Jude answered.
"Why didn't they just buy the lumber?" Bill looked at them with disgust.
"Cuz, they said something about Coulter and you, Judge, getting rid of the big boss. He didn't like that, not at all. Figured you'd stop him from owning a casino too. Just wanted to git that dang place up and running before anyone knew what was going on." Clay opened up.
"So, you two saw Rick getting in the way of your plans, and nearly killed him because of this? Don't you two have any regard for a man's life?" Nathan couldn't believe why he even bothered trying to reason with them.
"Looks like we're going to have to take a ride out there Nathan," Bill stood up, I'm getting the map and you're going to show us where the lumber is fellas."
"C'mon, wait, we didn't eat yet." Jude protested.
Meanwhile, Gunther was listening to all of this and sat dumbfounded and wide-eyed. As he watched Bill leave to get the map, he gulped.
"All in good time," Nathan answered Jude, "we're not done here yet."
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 84
Bill strode into the Mountie office with determination on getting to the bottom of these two outlaws sitting in the cells. Their attitude was very annoying, and Bill never tolerated this behavior. More motivated by the assault on Rick, Nathan too struggled valiantly from becoming embittered.
Meanwhile, Gabe finished up his report about the arrest of these two men. He shook hands with Bill, Gunther, and Nathan. Gunther saluted Gabe and told him he appreciated his coming to pick him up at the train station and for the advice, he shared with him that he would keep in mind. Nathan thanked Gabe once again for his help and sent him off to return to Brookfield. "Safe travels Gabe."
Gunther asked what he should do, and Nathan told him just to watch and learn. "This all comes with the territory Gunther, but it's not something that a cadet learns in training. It's just what you learn on the job." Nathan advised, then he lowered his voice to a whisper, "We already know where some of the lumber is, but we need to determine if there is more."
Bill and Nathan went back to Clay and Jude. "All right men, I have with me here a map of the local area. I want, no I need you, to show me where you stored the lumber, and where Harvey is going to build a casino," Bill barked sternly.
Clay looked up to Bill with a disgruntled look and biting his lip said, "Lemme see that map of yours."
Bill was not handing it over to him, instead, he held it up to the bars of his cell. "Point to where the lumber is," Bill directed.
As Clay begrudgingly indicated the spot that Bill and Nathan already found and one other place. Bill looked at Nathan and nodded. Both men made a mental note. "All right, is that it?" Bill asked. Clay grunted, "yea, that's it."
Turning to Jude, Bill repeated the question checking if he had the same answer. Jude growled and pointed to the same places, but he seemed hesitant. Continuing to hold the map up to Jude's cell bars, he told him to point to where the casino was going to be built. Jude snickered, "Right down from that first place we showed ya where there is lumber."
Bill and Nathan recognized it as the place where they had their campfire and buried the box of money. "Aw shoot now Jude, what'ya done tell them that fir!" he shook his head and protested.
"Oh, so you're confirming where Jude told us, Clay?" Bill said tartly.
"I ain't sayin' nothin'" Clay shrugged.
"I thought you were hungry?" Nathan reminded the two men. "You'll get your food, but for now, you better think again about telling us who this head honcho of yours is or this will be your last meal until your trial."
Bill took Gunther with him to Billees to get food, and while with him told him more about interrogation. Gunther was learning firsthand how to deal with outlaws from two of the best of the Royal Canadian Mounties.
Bill put his hand on his shoulder, "Gunther, this is not an easy job. Sure, most of the time, the focus is on minor things and basically keeping law and order, but there will be times when you will face dangerous threats, like now. Don't let this get the better of you. Mounties are brave and we always get the outlaws!" he smiled convincingly.
As the two of them were walking back to the jail, Elizabeth came hurriedly toward them. "Bill, wait, I need to talk to you please."
Bill stopped, he introduced Gunther and sent him to the jail with the food. "What is it Elizabeth?"
"Bill, I found another letter that was left under my door. I don't know who brought it, but I suspect it was the same man as last time," she drew quiet.
Bill raised his eyebrows, looked around, and told Elizabeth to step inside his judge's office right away. She handed Bill the letter.
Bill skimmed through the brief note demanding $1,000, to be brought to the bench by the pond the next day at six o'clock in the evening in a white envelope. She was not to look at the person but would be told, from behind, to get up and leave the envelope on the bench. She needed to know that she would be watched and not to tell anyone.
When they got inside, he asked her if anyone else knew about this. She told him no. "Where's little Jack?" Bill was worried.
"He's with Anna. They're both at the library with Rosaleen. I was there with them and saw you walking outside, and I had to tell you!" Elizabeth was getting frantic.
"No, don't get upset, you must keep your cool Elizabeth. You were right to come to me. I'm so sorry you are being threatened like this, but we will work out a plan. You will not be alone." Bill assured her as he hugged her tightly.
"Bill, what are we going to do?" Elizabeth asked with fear in her eyes.
"First thing you need to do is go back to the library and act natural. Chat with Anna and laugh out loud as if this is just another fun summer day. Tomorrow, go to the bank in the morning and withdraw two $100 bills and eight $1.00 bills. Write a list of the serial numbers of the bills down on paper while still at the bank. Put the $1.00 bills between the two $100 bills and put them in a white envelope sealing it shut then put it in your purse. Continue on home, lock the door, and do not leave the house at all. Ask Rosemary and Paul to come for a visit inside. I'll let Lee know, but please don't tell Rosemary. Do whatever you usually do at home, except don't hang out wash outside in the back yard either. Understand?" Bill stopped and let out a breath. Elizabeth nodded. He knew this was all scary for Elizabeth, but he continued.
"When it's time to go to the pond, have Dee take care of Jack. I'll be telling all of this with Nathan of course. When you arrive, both of us, and our new Mountie, Gunther, will be watching and ready. You will not be alone, you have to trust me, Elizabeth." Bill gave her one last hug.
Elizabeth looked at Bill and asked, "Please pray Bill, thank you!"
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 85
Bill thought about the times he promised Jack that if anything ever happened to him, he would see to it that Elizabeth would be taken care of. He never thought that would ever be the case, but indeed it had, for several years now. When Elizabeth asked him to be little Jack's Godfather it cemented his promise, for if Jack knew that Elizabeth was carrying his child, he would want the same for his child too. This strong connection is what he treasured, almost like he was a big brother to Elizabeth and an "uncle" to LJ. Knowing the honest, good man that Jack was, he felt he needed to live up to Jack's reputation.
Bill's gruff no-nonsense exterior sometimes kept people at a distance, but once they knew him, they realized just what a good-warmhearted man he was. Luckily for his sake, Molly saw right through him to the core of his being, where in his heart was a tender, kind soul. He was a man who married a woman, quite a while ago, when Nora was pregnant with another man's child who abandoned her. Feeling sorry for her, he offered to marry her, and they raised that child together. Bill loved him as if he were his own. When their son died, a part of him died too. Nora never accepted that Bill was grieving like her and left Bill.
Being hurt and alone to grieve, left him with a scar, and that is what caused Bill to form a wall around himself. Molly knew this, yet she persisted, causing Bill to give in to her love, melting his wall. Now, he allowed himself to fall in love and people were noticing a softer, relaxed side of Bill, that was released with Molly's sweet and complete understanding and love. He would do anything for her, even have an outdoor wedding reception which he thought was impractical, yet he was an easy pushover for his fiancé.
He was disappointed when Elizabeth chose to court Bouchard. He never trusted him, and his instincts rarely let him down. Nathan, on the other hand, was a man of integrity and an already developed sense of family. It was evident how he loved his niece enough to adopt her, and Bill knew Nathan would be the man to take care of her if Jack had any chance to say so. Unfortunately, Elizabeth allowed her fear to cast Nathan aside. Bill felt sympathy for Nathan. Bouchard left town without saying a word to anyone and most of all left Elizabeth alone. He knew how that felt when Nora left him alone to grieve, and he empathized with her, but she had done this to herself. He knew, that when love calls your heart, you should follow it.
Now, thankfully, Nathan had a beautiful, loving bride, Dee, and a child on the way. His Ma moved in with him so he could keep an eye on her. Allie was happy and content, especially with her new filly, Penny. His dad, Archie, was being taken care of and would join them in their new home. Life was going well for Nathan.
Reality brought him back to what Elizabeth just told him, and he was on his way to fill Nathan in. Both he and Nathan had to deal with double trouble now while including Gunther. Bill was concerned he might be more of a nuisance than a help, but even though Gunther was wet behind the ears, he seemed to be made of good material. They had to give him a chance.
When Bill entered the RCMP office, Nathan was going over his notes and Gunther was stationed by the jail cells keeping watch on the two while they were gobbling their food down. It was evident they were eating with all the lip-smacking and belching from eating too fast. Clearly, Gunther was not enjoying his assignment.
Bill walked over to Nathan and told him quietly about Elizabeth's blackmail message. They discussed how Bill had handled the situation and the instructions he gave Elizabeth. Nathan shook his head suggesting, "This is more than I expected. It makes me wonder if these two situations are connected. Maybe the person behind both of these is one and the same."
"My thoughts exactly," Bill agreed.
The telephone rang just then. "Royal Canadian Mountie Police, Sergeant Grant speaking" Nathan answered. As he was listening, he jotted down some notes, then thanked the caller and hung up.
"That was Staff Sergeant Coyle informing me that Thomas Thornton has not been located yet. Apparently, he is not at his home, nor has he reported to work. It is highly suspected that he is being held hostage. His gambling debt is not known, but when he was last involved in a fight, according to the police report filed, he was being roughed up by some thugs who were giving him a warning to pay up or next time he might not be able to walk away," Nathan informed Bill.
"So, this letter Elizabeth got is to release Tom, who is probably held hostage," Bill nodded, "looks like the plan for tomorrow is quite serious. I don't want Elizabeth getting kidnapped. We have to be careful. I just don't like this." Bill looked away.
"Headquarters is sending us help. Three Constables are already on their way. They are expected here late tonight," Nathan let out a sigh, "this is a big relief with Elizabeth's trouble, and the lumber/casino case both at once, we need more men. Hopefully, these three Mounties will be taking our current guests with them for their trial."
Gunther brought back the dirty dishes and asked what to do with them. "Just leave them over at the door so I remember to bring them back to Billees," Bill instructed.
Dr. Carson came to the door and was knocking. Gunther opened it for him, and Nathan stood up and introduced the two of them. "I heard you have someone who needs their leg looked at. Is now a good time?" Carson asked.
"Yes, fine. First though, how's Rick?" Nathan was still very concerned about him.
"He's been sleeping most of the day. Faith and I have been taking turns keeping a close watch on him. I had to make arrangements to have him transferred, so that's why I haven't been here before now." Carson explained.
"Don't worry at all. This is the man, Clay," Nathan pointed as he walked Carson to his cell, "he's the one who had a bullet graze his leg. He doesn't seem hurt much at all."
Carson went into the cell by Clay and had him drop his pants and lay on the cot. The smell coming from Clay was disgusting, but Carson had to clean his leg and examine his wound. Clay moaned and groaned complaining about how badly his leg hurt. After careful inspection, Carson told them all that it looked worse than it was. Once the blood was washed away, it was evident it was a superficial wound. Covering the wound with gauze, Carson told Clay he was done, and he could get dressed. Nathan thanked Carson and told him to give his best to Rick if he didn't get there himself later.
Nathan looked at Bill and told him, "We have to get these two to talk. I mean now!"
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 86
Nathan told both Jude and Clay that they better let him know who their boss Harvey was. They claimed to not know where he came from or who he worked for. All they knew was that he was involved in the plans for a gambling casino.
Nathan and Bill conferred and decided that Bill would wait for the other Mounties they were expecting so that Nathan could take Gunther out to the plot of land where he first saw the men at the campfire. It was getting late, and Nathan needed to get out there before dusk. However, first things first, he had to let Dee know.
"Hello, Dee?" Nathan asked when she answered the telephone.
"Yes, Nathan, it's been a long day and we've been waiting for you, will you and Gunther be home for dinner?" Dee asked.
"That's what I'm calling you about honey. I don't want to alarm you, but we've got three Mounties coming out here to help. We are not only dealing with the two outlaws who injured Rick, but also with a problem regarding Elizabeth and a possible hostage situation. I can explain later, but we won't be home for dinner," Nathan tried to explain. "I promise, I will call you later, remember I love you!"
"Be careful my love!" Dee replied anxiously, hanging up with a prayer already spoken in a whisper.
Nathan hung up and looked over at Gunther. "All right Gunther, you're coming with me. Let's go get you a horse. Kevin should have one saddled and ready to go."
Bill told them not to worry, he'd be there watching the two men and waiting for the Mounties. Bill knew this was going to be a long day and night. He was hoping to catch a wink, but he needed to telephone Lee concerning Rosemary and Paul keeping Elizabeth company tomorrow. When he called, Rosemary answered.
"Bill, everyone is out of the office now working in the field. Can I give Lee a message?" she asked.
"Yes, tell Lee to call me over at the jail when he gets back in please."
Molly came to the jail looking for Bill a little while later and brought sandwiches and lemonade. "Bill, honey, I've been worried about you. I can imagine you've been quite busy helping Nathan, but you still need to eat. Where is he?"
"He left with his new cadet, Constable Gunther out to the country. They wanted to check out the area where these two men have been. They'll be back in a while, but it sure is good to see you!" Bill said gratefully as he greeted her with a kiss.
"Bill, I don't think you all remember to eat when you're focused on trouble like this, so that's why I brought over some food. You'll need your strength. Is there anything else I can do?" Molly asked.
"Yes, please tell me that Rick's doing all right." Bill shrugged.
"Actually he is awake now. Christy just arrived not too long ago with Timi Anne and brought him a change of clothes. Carson is helping him get dressed. He'll be leaving for Clearwater Hospital in the morning." Molly reassured Bill. "Carson is staying at the infirmary with him until then, so I'm bringing them both some food when I leave here."
"That's good news. Rick will be fine. I just know it." Bill answered firmly.
"Yes! Fr. Ricardo came by and anointed Rick. It's the sacrament of the sick and Rick was grateful for him coming out to bless him. So many have been praying for him, so I feel too that he'll be all right." Molly smiled. "I better go and bring the rest of the food over to the infirmary. I love you Billy boy!"
"I love you, Red!" Bill drew her close to him and gave her a lingering kiss out of sight. He watched her leave going to the infirmary and thought, in just a few months and she's Mrs. Avery!
Nathan and Gunther rode out to the abandoned hunter's cabin. Nathan showed him the inside where the men were staying. He warned him to hold his breath as they would make a quick sweep looking for anything that might help them to know more about the two. Flies were swarming around the dishes, so Nathan picked them up and threw them away in an empty box outside. Gunther couldn't believe the bugs and maggots swarming in the half-empty containers of food. He rushed outside and vomited. He was embarrassed and felt like he failed, so he returned apologizing.
"Don't think twice about that Gunther. It gets to all of us at first. Let's check their clothes, especially their pockets," Nathan instructed.
One pair of pants had a map scratched on a piece of paper with an 'x' marked on it, in the pocket. "We need to take this. Let's bring the pants too." Nathan added.
"I don't see anything else, sir," Gunther advised.
"All right, now we'll ride out to their campsite. The last time Judge Bill and I were out there we found lumber and also a buried box with money in it. I hope they're both still there." Nathan said.
"Lumber?" Gunther was puzzled.
As they rode closer they heard an automobile running. Nathan motioned to Gunther to slow down and be quiet. Like Nathan had done before, he indicated to Gunther to dismount and tether his horse to a tree. Without saying a word, Nathan and Gunther both drew their pistols out of their holders and walked slowly and deliberately to an opening in the trees. Nathan halted and put his pistol away and grabbed the binoculars he had hung around his neck to look around before going any further. As he scanned the area, he saw a male figure next to the old burnt-out campfire site. The man's build was on the tall thin side. He wore no hat so he could see that his hair was dark and when he looked to the side, his silhouette exposed a full-face beard. For some reason, this man's appearance seemed familiar to Nathan. Could that be Bouchard!?
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 87
Nathan was watching the man by the campsite intently trying to determine if he was indeed Bouchard. His name and Walden's both were written on a piece of paper in the box with the money buried under the dirt in that spot. The last he had any word from headquarters, Bouchard was out of the country and last seen in San Francisco, California in the United States so he was surprised and startled to see his name on that paper with Wyman Walden. Not sure what that meant he surmised it might have had to do with the sale of the saloon to Walden from Bouchard. The town didn't like this at all as Walden wanted to convert the clientele of what was simply the local townsfolk enjoying dinner, cards, and dancing to a house of ill repute with gambling and prostitution. Walden was hoping to attract the attention of the new hires that were expected to populate the town. The town council had voted to reject Walden's proposal but he dug in his heels until Bill and Lee both combined their monies and bought out Walden. In gratitude the towns folk helped to remodel the saloon, replacing the bar with a buffet table, painting walls, hanging pictures, sewing curtains, and cleaning out the upstairs rooms, turning it into a warm, inviting Hope Valley family gathering place, renamed Billees, which was now the focus of the town.
These same good people wanted to keep Hope Valley the way they had established it, as a town where the folks felt like family. Many holiday events were celebrated at Billees throughout the year, as well as his own wedding reception to his lovely bride, Dee. The word of a gambling casino being built in the country, close enough to town, would be a thorn in the side of these good folk. The location was also near the new Catholic Church that was beginning to be built. Fr. Ricardo would be very upset if this casino became a reality. Nathan wanted to protect the good folks of Hope Valley from this, and keep the likes of the two men in his jail and their boss, Harvey, out of the area he was responsible for. Somehow, Walden needed to be stopped.
As he observed this man, he knew now from Bill, that this land was now owned by Walden. This man didn't look like Walden, but more like Bouchard. Or was it Harvey? He had seen the back of this 'Harvey' briefly leaving the abandoned cabin, but never got a look at him. Nathan wasn't able to recognize Harvey's voice either, so he quite probably was not Bouchard or Walden.
As he patiently watched the man walking the area he saw him kick some dirt around and looked carefully around. He ran his hands across the dirt by the campfire and felt around seemingly looking for something. Then he looked over to the grove of trees and determinedly strode over. He was behind the trees for some time and came out writing something down on a pad he had pulled out from his breast pocket. As he returned back he walked right past the campfire area and straight to his car. He got in and took off. Nothing he did warranted Nathan or Gunther to arrest him. Waiting patiently for several minutes not moving, making sure he was gone, Nathan motioned for Gunther to join him as he walked out to where the mystery man just was. Quickly, Nathan showed Gunther where the box was buried and they dug down and found it still there. Nathan was relieved to know the contents remained also.
"It seems that man was looking for this box, but gave up and left," he said to Gunther. "We are going to take this with us. The men confirmed to several of us about this exact plot of land where the casino is planned to be built. This is evidence. Now, we need to walk over to the grove of trees to establish that the lumber Bill and I found earlier is still there." Nathan instructed.
Upon arrival they found the lumber just as he remembered. Gunther quickly counted the lumber in sizes and jotted it down hoping it would co-inside with what Bill had noted earlier. "Let's go to town and take this box back to the jail office. On the way back, I want to take a look at the other place where more lumber was stored." Nathan said.
They found the other area nearby where the rest of the stolen lumber was. Apparently, they had been quite busy gathering lumber for Harvey. When they walked into the jail office, Bill and the three other Mounties were there waiting for them.
Nathan was satisfied that these Mounties were well experienced. This was going to make his job easier. "Thank you for coming Constables, I am Sargent Grant, and this is a new cadet who just joined our ranks, Constable Gunther Burmeister," Nathan welcomed Constables Callahan, Meyer, and Palmer.
He set the box he brought with him on his desk. Bill explained to the Constables where they had found it and what they discovered inside. Opening the box, Nathan showed them all the roll of money, the paper with Walden and Bouchard's names written down, and the sealed envelope. First, they opened the envelope and discovered a written document confirming the owner of the plot of land to be Wyman Walden. Also there was an IOU to Walden from Bouchard in the amount of $2,000 U.S. Currency.
They all looked at each other and figured that the cash that was in the box might be the money that Bouchard owed Walden. That prompted them to count out the money and it was determined that it was $1500.00.
Nathan went over to Clay and Jude and began interrogating them again, "Jude, Clay, it's time to wise up and tell me who this Harvey is. What has he got to do with the box that was buried by your campfire?" Nathan demanded.
The two men startled jumped off their cots, "What did you find?" Jude asked.
"Do you have it?" Clay questioned.
Jude looked at Clay, "Jude, you idiot, why do you ask if he has it? I don't know what you're talking about!"
Clay wasn't about to take the rap for this, so he yelled back, "Jude don't play dumb. It was you who agreed to this with Harvey!"
"Stop right now," Nathan commanded. "If you won't talk, you will when you get transferred to Buxton. The longer you take, the harder it's going to be for you both. Now, tell me who this Harvey is and what he wants."
Jude said he had worked for Harvey before when he was building railroads in California. He met Harvey in a saloon when playing poker. Harvey was a good card shark and made a lot of money."
Harvey was working with the underground, opening casinos any place he could, while hiring the likes of Jude and Clay to do his dirty work. They didn't care as he always paid them good, so they quit the railroad business to work for Harvey. Working now for Henry was only a cover.
Nathan walked away satisfied for now. The Mounties were in deep conversation when the telephone rang. It was Dee. "Nathan sweetheart, is everything all right? You promised to call me back."
"Dee, I'm sorry, I just got back awhile ago, the three Constables arrived, and we are discussing the situation." Nathan felt bad for her to have to call him.
"Nathan, I'm bringing you all some of Ma's dinner. I'm sure they are hungry. Besides, I want to see you before I go to bed."
"Please, don't worry, I don't want you out tonight."
"Don't worry, Lee is taking me. I'll see you soon." Dee said quickly before Nathan could argue with her.
Nathan smiled, his wife, and his Ma's cooking was exactly what he needed.
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 88
Nathan was elated to see Dee, she had captivated him from the moment he saw her a year ago and it never got old for him to behold her. Nathan wrapped his arms around her with a prolonged hug. Dee sat next to Nathan, as Gunther courteously offered her his chair. She noticed how Nathan proudly introduced her to the Constables. They congratulated her on the baby she was carrying and complimented Nathan to her as one they thought highly of. Dee beamed with appreciation.
"Thank you all for coming. I'm happy to meet you," she said as she looked at each of them, "you must be Gunther," she alluded as she smiled warmly at him.
"Yes, Ma'am. I'm happy to make your acquaintance Mrs. Grant," Gunther smiled.
"Likewise, Gunther. You'll soon meet my mother-in-law, and you can call her Mrs. Grant. She's the matriarch of our family and one of the best cooks in town! Especially German cuisine, if you like that," she teased with a wink. "Please, just call me Dee."
Gunther looked at Nathan seeking permission across his face. "If that's what the lady says then that's fine with me," Nathan said with his crooked smile, although Bill was not so sure.
Lee had helped her bring in the food for the Mounties. The beef smelled delectable, and the men were more than grateful for a bite to eat. Bill had suggested they eat at Billees, but there was no agreement once the aroma swept the room. Of course, Clay and Jude were hungry, and they were given the cold sandwiches left from when Molly had brought them over earlier.
Refraining from talking about the business at hand while Dee was present, Bill took a moment to talk to Lee about having Rosemary and Paul visit Elizabeth tomorrow to keep her company when she returned from the bank. He filled him in with a brief synopsis of what was going down tomorrow without the details and reassured Lee that all would be safe.
After finishing their dinner, Dee gathered the dishes and regretfully said good night to her husband. "I wish you could come home with me, but I understand you can't. When will you rest?"
"I'm coming home late, and I'll have to leave early in the morning. Please don't wait up for me, you and little bun need to get your rest. I'll be fine." Nathan gave her a kiss on her forehead and a hug. Lee took the box of dishes and left to take Dee home.
Nathan walked back and asked both Clay and Jude if Harvey was expected back. Jude said, "Yea, he'll be looking for us."
"At the cabin?" Nathan inquired.
"Probably already did by now," Clay answered, "If he don't see our horses and wagon, he'll be ticked off, for sure."
"I have a picture of a man that I want you to identify whether it's Harvey or not," Nathan reached into his pocket and held up a picture of Lucas Bouchard.
"Nah, never seen that guy." Jude shook his head.
"Describe Harvey to me," Nathan kept his inquiry going.
"Tall fella, skinny, dark hair," Jude answered.
"Anything else? Does he have a beard, long hair...?" Nathan watched both of their expressions.
"Yea, yea, a mustache, and a beard. He's a Toliver, like we done said already, smart as a whip too, he's the boss man." Clay spoke up.
Nathan walked back to the rest of the Mounties, "Seems like the man Gunther and I saw out in the country today was Harvey Toliver. Apparently, he's the lead man of the Toliver gang. The rest of the gang ride horses, this man, Harvey, drives a car, so I suspect he's the one with the money and the brains of the gang."
"That rules out Bouchard," Bill deducted, "he must resemble this Harvey guy."
"The question still remains is, if Bouchard owes money to Walden according to the IOU, is that Bouchard's money?" Nathan pondered.
Constable Callahan suggested they ask Clay and Jude again. "I'll ask."
"All right boys, you know that we have the box you buried. Is that money payment from Toliver for you two?" Callahan asked.
"We already told ya we don't know nothin' about no money." Clay insisted.
"I wish it was ours, we'd be running this outfit if it were," Jude let out a belch.
Clay was kicking his cot, "There ya go again, opening your damn trap!"
"So you do know about this money, yes Jude?" Callahan confirmed.
Jude spit. "Yea, but it's not ours. That there money goes to Toliver."
"How did you get it?" Nathan stepped in asking.
"By messenger. Some guy gave it to us and told us to keep it and the envelope safe. We didn't know what to do except bury it. Said it was for Toliver." Clay revealed.
Nathan and Callahan walked away and joined the other Mounties. Nathan shared his suspicion he had thought about earlier. Could this situation have anything to do with blackmailing Elizabeth? The men needed to cement their plan. They focused on who would be where tomorrow. The 3 extra Mounties would stay through the night and possibly tomorrow night depending on how the money exchange went down with Elizabeth. Right now, Henry had offered cots for them to stay in the jail. Gunther went home with Bill, and Nathan left late for home to get some sleep. Tomorrow would be a challenging day.
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 89
Elizabeth couldn't sleep well, tossing and turning, even having nightmares about what could go wrong. She was extremely nervous and very worried about the day ahead as anyone would be. Her main fear was that she might be kidnapped and little Jack wouldn't have his mommy either. Leaving him an orphan was unthinkable to her. With barely any sleep and her emotions running rampant, she tried to compose herself for Jack's sake. She had to remember what Bill promised her, that she would be watched carefully and she had to trust him and Nathan.
She got up and washed her face, drank some water, and prayed that God was beside her all the way. She begged His forgiveness for allowing herself to be swayed by Lucas and leaving Nathan a broken man. As she prayed she realized that Nathan was now a whole man. He was a wonderful husband to Dee and father to Allie and his own child on the way. Perhaps her turning away from Nathan was a good thing in the long run. A smile crept across her lips as she felt happy for him. She knew he was a man who deserved happiness and true love, and now he had it. No longer could she resent Dee as it was her own fault that Nathan sought another love. No longer could she pine over Nathan, he was with a lovely wife, with who she worked alongside and grew to be friends because of the grace extended to her by Dee. She knew in her heart what was meant to be.
If God saw her through today, she would leave behind any bitterness she felt towards Dee, and any jealousy would be extinguished. As far as Nathan, she would always love him, but not in a romantic way, she would only punish herself more if she didn't let go of that. She thanked God for putting everything in perspective and resolved to be a better person from that moment on. She was grateful for her friends and support. Perhaps, someday, she would find love again for one never knows when calls the heart.
Elizabeth got dressed and checked on Jack. He was starting to wake and she greeted him with a big smile and rushed to give him a big hug. "How's my little man?" she asked while planting kisses all over his face. "Mama, I love you!" Jack laughed.
Elizabeth easily got Jack dressed and the day started out much better than the other day, for which she was grateful. Jack was in a good mood and that made her relieved. Downstairs they had some breakfast together. Jack loved his oatmeal or scrambled eggs, so today she made both. She had been teaching Jack how to calm down when it was meal time by folding his hands and bowing his head as they said a simple prayer together, "Thank you Lord for this food, and all the blessings of our day. Amen."
Elizabeth took Jack out of his high chair and let him play with his blocks while she cleaned up the kitchen dishes. When she was done, she hung up her apron and took a few minutes to join him in building his castle. They had read the story about a prince and his princess last night so now they were building the castle and laughing about it when Elizabeth's wall fell down.
It was time for Elizabeth to go to the bank. She telephoned Nathan at the jail and told her she would be leaving in a few minutes. Nathan sent two Mounties outside to keep an eye on her and little Jack. They didn't expect any trouble right now because whoever was coming for the money wouldn't come until later that night at 6:00 by the pond. However, they were making sure no more problems would arise unexpectedly.
Elizabeth took the stroller outside, popped a cowboy hat on Jack and a bonnet on her head, and placed him in the stroller. She made a point of greeting everyone with a smile and a wave of hello. Several stopped to say what a nice day it was and to greet the littlest cowboy around. Elizabeth felt reassured there were so many friends and folks she knew out and about. When she reached the town, Dottie called to her to come and see the new fabric and children's clothes that had arrived not too long ago. This proved to be a great distraction and one that Elizabeth enjoyed.
When she left Dottie's Apparel Shop, Dr. James Scholl was walking over. He definitively looked very debonair and turned many a lady's eyes. He tipped his hat at greeting Elizabeth and squatted down to greet Jack. "How are you doing cowboy?" he smiled broadly.
"I'm the good guy," Jack answered.
"Well partner, I'm glad to see you!"
"Good day, Mrs. Thornton!" Dr. Scholl nodded.
"Oh please, call me Elizabeth, just my school children call me Mrs. Thornton," Elizabeth returned with a smile.
"Enjoy your day Elizabeth, and Cowboy Jack!" he called as he stepped into the Apparel shop.
Elizabeth noticed the two Mounties walking the streets around the town and breathed a sigh of relief. She crossed over to the bank and was greeted inside by Ben. He was very polite and asked how he could help her. Elizabeth quietly requested two one hundred dollar bills, and eight one-dollar bills to be withdrawn from her savings. When Ben counted them out to her, there was only one other person in the bank who she had never seen before, and then she saw Bill standing behind her. Smiling at Ben she thanked him.
Bill greeted her, "Good day Elizabeth," and told Jack how glad he was to see a cowboy in town.
"Hello Uncle Bill," Jack reached up and Bill held him. The two of them chatted while Elizabeth went over to the counter, and did what Bill had instructed her to, writing the serial numbers of each bill down, putting them in an envelope with the dollar bills between the hundred dollar bills, and sealing it.
Placing the envelope in her purse, she turned around and said laughingly, "Have you been keeping Uncle Bill busy?"
"He's happy to see me, Mama!" Jack replied.
"Yes, I am Jack! You just make me so very happy!" Bill smiled as he gave Jack a hug and put him back in the stroller. "Bye cowboy, see you later!"
"Bye Bill, see you later," Elizabeth said calmly and nodded as Bill walked up to Ben to do his banking business.
Elizabeth left without a glance back and nodded at the Mounties as she walked back home. As she came to her house, Rosemary and Paul were waiting outside on their porch. Rosemary seemed very casual and her usual friendly self. She walked up and Elizabeth was relieved to see them, inviting them in. When inside, she locked both her doors and windows. She quickly called Nathan telling him she was inside.
"Would you like some tea?" she asked as she hung up her hat.
"Yes, that would be delightful," Rosemary answered. "Are you all right?"
Elizabeth took in a deep breath, "Yes, so far, so good. I saw Mounties in the town that I have never seen before, so I feel protected. While praying this morning, I asked God to forgive me for my bitterness, and jealousy and peace came over me. Rosemary, I was always asking for things to go my way, but never His way. I realized for the first time in quite a while, that I was wrong, and I needed to surrender all that was holding me back from happiness."
"What made you come to this thought?" Rosemary wrinkled her nose not knowing what her friend was getting at.
"I'm not sure, but I think this threat on Tom's life, well, it snapped me into thinking that life is too short, Jack is who I should be focusing on. I need to stop having a pity party and wait for God to show me what He wants for me. I need to make sure Tom is released and Jack is safe. That's all that matters to me right now," Elizabeth affirmed, "Well, of course, you and all my friends and family to goes without saying. I love you all."
Rosemary felt tears slipping down her cheeks as she hugged her good friend, "We're in this together!"
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 90
Nathan was relieved that Rick was finally going to the Clearwater hospital. He saw him being helped out to the car and ran over to the Infirmary to see him off. He gave Rick a gentle hug, told him to take care of himself, and reminded him how everyone was praying for him. Lee assured him that his job would be waiting for him when he was able to come back to work. Christy gave Rick a long, tender hug and a kiss to seal her promise to pray for him. Timi Anne babbled at her daddy, and he told her he couldn't wait to come back to her. His mom and dad gave him a rosary to take with him and they all embraced saying goodbye. Everyone waved and watched until they no longer could see the automobile.
When Nathan got back inside the RCMP office, he talked with the three Mounties as soon as they returned from the Cafe where they had breakfast. "How did your night go?" he asked.
"Not as bad as I anticipated with these men," Constable Callahan joked. "No, not a peep out of your two guests either. We brought back some oatmeal for them and a mug of coffee for you," he said as he handed the food to Clay and Jude, setting the mug of coffee down on Nathan's desk.
Constable Meyer asked what Nathan had planned for the day as he and the other Constables were to take the two prisoners to Buxton to await trial. "We need to let Headquarters know when to expect the transfer."
"To be honest with you, I could use some help for tonight first." He called them in closer as he discussed with all three of the Constables, Gunther, and Bill what to expect. "Elizabeth Thatcher will be coming into town bringing the money with her to the pond and sitting at the bench there until, whoever this blackmailer is, arrives from behind her and tells her to leave the envelope with the money on the bench. Then she is to walk away without looking back."
"The pond is in the back of the town. We need Constables Callahan and Meyer on the roof of the buildings close by," Bill added.
"Judge Bill and Constable Palmer will be in plain clothes in town blending in with other folk close to the pond. I will be by the church and Gunther will be inside here at the jail," Nathan began. "When the man approaches Elizabeth, we all need to be ready to arrest him. Watch for any other suspicious people. No doubt he possibly won't be working alone. Work together and only use your pistol if necessary. Injuring is always the last action we should take."
"Once we apprehend this man or men, they will be also taken to Buxton for questioning. We cannot allow more than one man in a cell, so the transfer will be done as soon as we have all of them." Bill explained.
"We're not sure how many are involved. We're suspecting there will only be one or two operating alone. Right now, we don't know if this blackmailing is connected to the Toliver gang or not. It's likely the head boss, is keeping his nose clean and letting someone do the dirty work." Nathan continued, "Any questions?"
"Then we need to have horses ready in case we need to pursue anyone attempting to take off," Constable Meyer spoke up.
"Yes, we also will have use of an automobile offered by Henry Gowen, if need be," Nathan answered. "Your main goals are to keep Elizabeth Thornton safe and capture the person threatening her. If it takes using your pistols or rifles, so be it, however, don't shoot to kill, unless in defense of a direct threat of life. Understood?"
"Yes, of course, that is our experience and it's how we all are trained," Constable Palmer nodded.
"Great. Now, if you need to relax or grab a bite to eat, Billees is open, and don't worry about paying, it's on me." Bill smiled broadly.
Over at the Cafe, the Chickadees were meeting to go over their plans for Summer Bible Camp. Minnie filled everyone in on what Elizabeth and Rosemary had already planned.
Dee was there to hand out copies of the songs they would be teaching the children. Karen and Allie were helping with the music by playing their guitars and Angela with the piano. Learning the songs, the Chickadees had lots of laughs and fun.
Teresa spoke up, "I have some craft ideas, I'd like to share. She brought along strings, ribbons, buttons, and beads to make a cross necklace for the girls and a necktie for the boys." She showed her samples. The ladies agreed those ideas would be a great project, so they offered to bring in any supplies they had.
Jane said she knew that Jesus and His disciples would dance at festivities like weddings, with a dance called The Horah, and she would teach it to the children and the Chickadees. "I think it's a fun dance for all, but we'll need to practice," she laughed.
Joyce chimed in, "Jesus and His disciples rode donkeys, so pin the tail on the donkey is always a fun game!" Many nodded in agreement.
Janice shared a book that she offered to read to the children about Noah's ark. "I think the children would love to pretend to be animals, so maybe we can ask Rosemary about the children doing a skit!" All the ladies agreed that sounded like a wonderful idea.
Diane and Brenda were in charge of snacks and organizing the end-of-the-week potluck supper. Of course, Emily had a list of yummy bakery goods she'd bake.
Minnie was very encouraged by all the ideas and thanked them for offering to help. She asked that they all join her in prayer for Rick O'Neill's healing, and they quieted down, bowed their heads, and joined hands in solidarity.
Allie and Karen rode their bikes out to the Peterson farm after the Bible Camp meeting. Karen wanted a horse too after being with Allie and Penny. Her dad had told her she'd have to wait as they expected to adopt another child, their son, in the next few weeks after the papers were approved and notarized. Karen was looking forward to having a brother. She already knew most of the children there.
The day was going by as usual. It was late afternoon, and Rosemary and Paul returned home from Elizabeth's, to prepare for Lee's arrival back in time for dinner.
Elizabeth was nervous about having to go to town with the money in a little while. She maintained a happy attitude for Jack's sake and luckily, he remained in a good mood. She could barely eat the closer it got to leave. Dee came as planned and stayed with Jack so Elizabeth could go. Elizabeth looked at Dee and held her hands, "Dee, I just want you to know that I'm so sorry for any time I've made you feel uncomfortable. You and Nathan are good for each other and I only want what's best for you both," she said sincerely as she looked in Dee's eyes searching for acceptance.
"Elizabeth, I know you loved Nathan, he's hard not to love. I understand it must've been difficult for you after Lucas left, but what was between you and Nathan is in the past. Thank you for being honest with me. We can wipe the slate clean. Now, be careful," Dee replied, "Godspeed," she said as they both hugged. Biting her lip and taking a deep breath, Elizabeth left and began walking to town.
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 91
Lee appointed Matthew to take Rick's place working with the crew to enlarge the first level of the Cafe. The crew was able to get a good start with the outside walls of the extra bedroom and living area. The Cafe would soon allow the Canfields to have adequate personal living space separate from the cafe. All of the family was looking forward to the expansion of their home.
Having bought out Abigail's part, Minnie asked Bill if they could put her name on the sign. Bill thought that was perfect. He already had his and Lee's name on Billees and was mainly a silent partner now with the Cafe. So, Joseph decided to make a beautiful new sign that read, "Minnie's Cafe" to hang outside. Minnie was proud and excited to see the sign.
Joseph was now overseeing quite a few projects. Not only the Cafe, but the Mercantile, the School/Church, Nathan and Lee's houses, and more row houses for the new hires. The tent city, as the town referred to it, was supposed to be temporary but for the occupants, it was barely satisfactory. Those row houses needed to be built quickly. Lee was constantly hiring more help. Nathan and Bill would be given names and locations of the men who applied and would run it past Headquarters from now on since they had problems with Clay and Jude.
Nathan and Dee's house had the plumbing and electrical installed. When Nathan rode out doing his rounds earlier in the day, he was excited to see the progress. Lee's house was behind schedule because of the stolen lumber having to be transported back to his site, but at least he didn't have to order replacement lumber.
Nathan told Gunther they would stop by the abandoned cabin where Clay and Jude had been staying. As they approached, they saw what looked to be the same man they had been watching at the campfire, walking out of the cabin. He was shaking his head and kicking the water bucket outside by the pump. "Seems he's not too pleased," Nathan said to Gunther.
"Is he looking for those men?" Gunther asked.
"Probably, no doubt he's figuring they are either in custody or took off. Either way, it's obvious he's angry," Nathan looked knowingly at Gunther.
Both Nathan and Gunther watched to see where he was headed. It seemed he had parked his automobile near the clearing by the trees. He was scowling and muttering all the way back. "Do you want to follow him?" Gunther asked.
"Yes, we do," Nathan mounted Newton and Gunther mounted his horse, Sandy. Off they rode galloping as fast as they could to keep up with the automobile. They followed as far as they could before they lost sight of him. "Damn, looks like he's headed towards Brookfield. I better let Gabe know to keep an eye out for him. Let's head back to the jail office."
When they entered the office, Bill was waiting for them, "I was hoping you two would be here soon. The other three went to Billees for dinner. It's already 5:00 and Allie brought over some of your Ma's cooking. It's still hot, so enjoy."
While they were eating dinner, Nathan filled in Bill about who he and Gunther saw. "Same man, we're sure of it."
"None too happy, hmm," Bill shrugged, "could be he's Harvey Toliver!"
Nathan nodded in affirmation, "My thoughts exactly."
When the other Constables returned from Billees, it was time for everyone to get into place. Constable Callahan climbed up to the rooftop of the jail while Constable Meyer was on the rooftop of the Bank. Constable Palmer changed into civilian clothes and walked around town with Bill. Nathan went over to the church where he could get a close view of the bench, near the pond, that had just been installed in Timothy O'Neill's honor. When everyone was in place, they each gave a bird whistle to each other confirming their stations.
Elizabeth was slowly walking into town from the row houses seemingly relaxed, but friendly to those she met. She was flagged down by Janice, who wanted to get her approval for the reading of the story of Noah's Ark for the Bible Summer Camp. Elizabeth tried to remain composed and nodded her head in agreement with the story as far as she was concerned, suggesting she confirms it with Rosemary. Janice thanked her and the two continued walking to town together just small talk along the way. When they arrived, Janice excused herself to pick up some last-minute items at the Mercantile for dinner. Elizabeth let out a sigh of relief.
The church bells were chiming at 6:00, as they usually did, so Elizabeth walked briskly to the pond and sat down on the bench. As she waited, she prayed with her eyes wide open watching and listening. Her heart was beating fast, and she could feel her pulse coursing through her hands. Suddenly, she heard a low, deep voice from behind her asking her if she had brought the money. She mumbled, "Yes."
"Leave the envelope on the bench and walk away. Do NOT look back. Understood?" the mysterious voice commanded.
"Yes," Elizabeth whispered. She reached for the envelope in her satchel and slowly retrieved it placing it on the bench next to her. Then, doing as she was told, she got up and began to walk away.
"STOP!" the mystery voice yelled. "This isn't the right amount here, who do you think you are?" he demanded as Elizabeth could hear footsteps from behind rushing towards her.
Elizabeth panicked and started running, but he was coming closer when all of a sudden, she heard gunshots. People in town were screaming and scurrying for cover. Nathan, Bill, and the Constables all came towards her from different directions, but the man who had fallen to the ground had grabbed part of Elizabeth's dress and wouldn't let go causing her to fall to the ground too. He was rolling around with her and his own pistol, trying to hold her still in order to be his hostage. That's when Nathan stepped in and kicked him so hard on his wounded hip that he squealed out in pain and released Elizabeth. Elizabeth got up, stumbled, and ran into Nathan's arms.
Within seconds Constable Palmer handcuffed the man and Bill took a shaken Elizabeth from Nathan to his office. Watching the Mounties walk in with the man, Gunther jumped out of the chair behind the desk and let out a "Yahoo!" then quickly closed his mouth and became serious as the others smiled and nodded.
The questioning began immediately as Clay and Jude listened to their boss's interrogation. The man proved to be the elusive ringleader of the Toliver gang, their father, Harvey Toliver. He had escaped any indictments because of bribing judges instead letting his sons and nephews take the rap. He knew where they were, so he'd have to start talking as he would be spending his first night in jail in Buxton.
"So Harvey, tell us why you demanded $1,000 from Elizabeth Thornton?" Bill asked.
"Look here, it's all about business. Walden wanted his money due him from Bouchard for gambling debts while in Frisco that he never got. Bouchard told Walden to get it from her. He said she had Jack's Mountie pension and knowing her she would do anything to protect her little boy and Jack's brother." Harvey relayed scornfully.
"That son of a ..." Bill cursed angrily.
"What does this have to do with the money bag we discovered buried in the ground?" Nathan kept pressing him for answers.
"That's a payment towards what Bouchard owes Walden. When he didn't have enough money, that's when Lucas told him to go after the lady. Walden wants to build a gambling casino and he has every right to, he owns that land!" Harvey hissed sharply.
Only the Beginning Chapter 13, Page 92
Nathan was determined to send Toliver, Jude, and Clay off to Buxton with the three Constables as soon as possible. Buxton had a larger jail with more cells and security. Luckily, they could still get most of their traveling done while there was still light.
"Men, I have the utmost gratitude for your help today. Keeping Mrs. Thornton safe was our most important priority and you provided that, thank God. I hope you arrive in Buxton safely. I will pass on a good word to Headquarters regarding your exemplary assistance," and with that, he saluted the Mounties as they each escorted a handcuffed prisoner to the transfer wagon. Once secured, they left to thunderous applause from the townsfolk who were watching, including Elizabeth who was now outside with Bill. The Constables smiling, tipped their hats in reply and nodded to the folks.
Elizabeth was so relieved that what had just happened did not result in her being held hostage or kidnapped. She shared with Bill her fear not for herself of that, but for little Jack, and she praised God for her protection.
"Bill, did you notice the man in the bank earlier today? I believe he was that Harvey Toliver man. It gives me goosebumps thinking about that," she shuddered.
"You're probably right, as usual," Bill teased.
As Nathan was walking back inside the jail office, Bill and Elizabeth stepped in too. "Thank you, Nathan," Elizabeth smiled with gratitude reflected across her face, "Can you please inquire as to what happened to Tom Thornton? I'm still worried about him!"
Nathan nodded in agreement, "Of course, I'll call right now."
When Nathan called Headquarters, he found out they had followed up on his inquiry from earlier. Tom Thornton still was not found, but there were reports of thugs in Vancouver who were taking down men who owed money to the casinos and brothels. Apparently, there was a sting operation happening and they hoped that they would find Tom any time now. Bill, Nathan, and Elizabeth were hopeful that Tom would be rescued. Of course, Nathan assured Elizabeth he would let her know as soon as he got any word.
Next, Nathan called home and asked Allie to run over to Elizabeth's home and tell Dee they were on their way back. Allie was so relieved and happily went to tell her mom. Nathan locked up the jail and told Gunther, "We'll clean this up tomorrow."
Bill looked at Nathan and said, "I have to get a hug and kiss from Molly. We've been so busy, that I've neglected her. Besides, I need a back rub!" he winked.
"All right, Gunther can come back with me and meet the rest of my family. I'm sure he'll enjoy a piece of Ma's apple strudel! When you leave Molly's come by and pick him up on your way home." Nathan offered as all four of them walked home together.
When they arrived at Elizabeth's, she thanked them all again, went inside, and swept up little Jack in her arms. "Thanks, Dee. I really am glad we talked," she told her as she shut the door. Outside, they could hear her and little Jack laughing, and it sounded so good.
Bill continued on to Molly's when Dee and Nathan went inside their home and brought Gunther inside with them. Emily went up to them and wept with joy, she was so relieved. "I heard the gunshots and was very worried," she said as she hugged them all one by one.
"Who do we have here?" she smiled at Gunther.
"Ma, this is Constable Gunther Burmeister. Gunther, this is Mrs. Grant, my mother," he said proudly as he introduced them to each other.
"You are of German descent, ya?" Emily's eyes twinkled.
"Yes, Mrs. Grant, on both my mother and father's side," Gunther answered.
"So, you come here for dinner when you can, ya? I cook German food, that I think you'll enjoy!" Emily smiled broadly.
Watching Gunther, Allie became very interested. Allie. She bounced right over when she saw her Oma talking with Gunther. Looking at him directly, she offered her hand and introduced herself, "Hello Constable, my name is Allie Grant. I'm very pleased to meet you."
Gunther was taken aback by these two ladies in Sergeant Grant's household. Mrs. Grant seemed extremely friendly and proud to be German which made him feel at ease right away. He definitely was looking forward to her cooking.
Then just as quickly, Allie who he assumed was Nathan's daughter, was holding out her hand to him. Not knowing what else to do, he shook her hand and said hello. Looking at her he saw she was grinning from ear to ear and giving him a sweet look with her eyes. She was attractive, but she had to be off-limits working with Nathan Grant. Glancing at his Sergeant, he knew he needed to back off!
Dee rescued him from Allie and that awkward moment. "Gunther, it's so good to see you. It's been a very intense time for you to come to our town. I hope you know this is not our usual way of life here," she laughed.
"I hope not Ma'am."
"Come over to the living room and have a seat," Dee walked Gunther over.
Nathan sat next to Dee as Allie handed out a piece of strudel to everyone, smiling broadly again at Gunther. While relaxing, Nathan included Gunther in filling in his family about what all happened that day, starting with Rick leaving for the hospital and ending with Elizabeth going home to her son.
"The last month has surely been tense. We're still waiting on the whereabouts of Tom Thornton, and I believe Lucas Bouchard will be interrogated very soon. There are still pieces of the puzzle left, but I believe the worst is over," Nathan reassured them.
"Mrs. Grant, this strudel is delicious. It tastes a lot like my mother's recipe." Gunther complimented Emily.
"Why thank you, my dear. I'm glad you enjoyed it."
As the time flew by chatting and relaxing, Nathan felt good to be home with his family. When Bill came to pick up Gunther, Nathan couldn't wait to get upstairs and sink into his bed to rest. As he took off his clothes and stretched, he felt as though he would fall sound asleep standing up. However, Dee snuggled up to her hero, and kissed his neck lovingly several times, as she wasn't quite ready to fall asleep. Nathan smiled.
