Only the Beginning Chapter 14

Nathan was relieved to get the telephone call from Headquarters that morning. The news was great. Tom Thornton was safe. He was discovered during the sting operation. Apparently, he was bruised and battered, tied to a pole with tape around his mouth, but he was safe. He was examined by a doctor at the Vancouver hospital and although he was suffering with bruised ribs, a swollen broken nose and a constant ringing in his ears, the doctor admitted him to the hospital just for observation. Tom was young and fit, so the doctor explained that he fully expected him to recover. Tom still owed gambling debts but that all would be sorted out as the case was developed.

Lucas Bouchard was also found and arrested in San Francisco. The RCMP and the FBI of the USA were working in tandem in the sting of racketeering, involving Wyman Walden and his array of gambling casinos, which often times involved underground crime. Walden was linked with an up-and-coming mobster from Chicago by the name of Al Capone so authorities were already keeping a close ey on him. Walden had employed Lucas Bouchard in San Francisco and Harvey Toliver in Vancouver to open and operate gambling casinos.

Bouchard loved to gamble and he found himself in debt to Walden. Walden wouldn't tolerate any employee of his to owe him money. Bouchard had borrowed money from his parents saying it was to help an orphanage, but when they realized that was a lie, they cut him off. So, it was Bouchard who contacted Toliver to extort money from Elizabeth while kidnapping Tom Thornton as leverage. Blackmailing was the least of these crook's rap sheets.

Toliver was not on the up and up with Walden either and hired Clay and Jude to steal lumber and planned to keep the buried cash for himself. Oh, the web of evil that was weaved among these despicable men was slowly unraveling. Not one protected the others and the lies and deception all came spilling forth from these thugs.

Nathan made arrangements for Elizabeth to speak by telephone to her brother-in- law, Tom, in order to reassure both of them. "Tom, this is Elizabeth. I'm so glad to hear your voice!"

"Elizabeth, I'm so sorry you got involved in this mess. I am devastated that you found out, please forgive me," Tom was choking up.

"Tom, I'm just so glad that you are alive and I am able to speak with you. I hope as soon as you're released, that you will come up to Hope Valley and meet your nephew, little Jack," she pleaded.

"Jack? How old is he now?" Tom was thinking about how his brother, Jack, never knew he was a father, and if he had known Tom never went to see him, he would have been disgusted of him.

"He's 3 and a half now. You're going to love him Tom, he looks like his daddy," Elizabeth was smiling from ear to ear. "No more excuses, Tom, we are family and I expect to see you soon. I won't take no for an answer."

"I need to work, Elizabeth, I have to make money," Tom said.

"No worries, Tom, Lee is hiring and so is Henry. You can stay with us until we can get a row house built. See, it's all taken care of," Elizabeth laughed.

After Elizabeth left, Gunther went about cleaning the jail cells. Bill came by and told Nathan that the parcel of land that Walden bought was illegally bought through a bribed judge. Bill knew of this judge's devious practice and was rejoicing that he was finally caught. The bottom line was that Walden did not own that property. Everything seemed to be turning out right. All that was left, was for Rick to fully recover with no setbacks.

All three of them rode out to the abandoned cabin and opened the windows, let the fresh air run through it and threw out everything in it. That cabin had been there for years and no one claimed it. It was structurally sound so someone could fix it up to make it livable. They tossed around a few names and thought about Tom. It would be small, but big enough for him. He had a car and could use that to get into town, so the distance wouldn't be a problem. Maybe Tom would like it, if he came, that is.

Lee sent a few of his crew over to gather up the stolen lumber and brought that back. That meant he would be able to start building his home for Rosemary and Paul as soon as their plumbing and electrical was completed. Now, he didn't have to worry about stolen lumber any longer and could hire more men. He hoped Rick would be coming back, not only because he needed him, but more importantly, he and Christy needed a stable life. It was rough in the beginning for them, so he was praying that he would be all right.

Joseph and Matthew were working on the addition to the Cafe. It was noisy but most of the townsfolk knew it was temporary while they were making the cafe and living space bigger. It helped that Angela played the piano for background music so customers graciously tolerated the remodeling noise.

Starting next week, the summer Bible Camp would begin. That meant that the Chickadees needed to meet and get the craft supplies ready, practice the songs, and go over their daily plans. They sang along with Angela on piano and Allie on guitar. The children were looking forward to going too which was half the battle.

Now that life was getting back to normal, Gunther could relax a little and met some of the younger adults at Billees through Maggie and Sam. It seemed he found a good group to get to know. He enjoyed baseball, so that was his way to meet the others Sam suggested. Nathan agreed.

It was going to be a good summer after all; Nathan felt confident. Things had to get better, after all it was Hope Valley!

Only the Beginning Chapter 14, Page 94

Since Gunther was staying with Bill, who rarely ate at home, he walked over to Billees to get some breakfast. After rounds with Nathan, he would stop over to the Mercantile and buy some food to bring back with him.

While over at Billees, Sam and Maggie were talking to each other about the baseball game coming up later that afternoon. It was a new team from Clearwater that they hadn't played. Gunther's ears perked up when he heard them talk about baseball. He used to be on a team in his hometown all through school. Now, he kept track of the professionals.

When Maggie came over to refill his coffee, he took the opportunity to ask more about the local team. She put the coffee pot down and pulled out a chair. "Are you a baseball player, Gunther?" she asked.

"I was for 6 years back at home. Catcher was my best position. At one point I thought I'd go into it as a professional. That was just a dream though the pull towards the police force was much stronger," Gunther explained to Maggie.

"Have you kept up with it at all?" she asked.

"Not playing myself, but yes, I pay very close attention to the sports section of the newspaper to know what's going on. Did you know, Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run on Canadian soil on September 5, 1914, at Hanlan's Point Stadium in Centre Island in Toronto? Ruth was playing for the Providence Grays against the Toronto Maple Leafs team of the International League," Gunther said confidently.

Maggie stood up. Gunther was seriously a fan. Maybe Sam would ask him to help coach she thought. "Very interesting Gunther, well I have to check with the other customers if they want coffee, but why don't you come to the game this afternoon? Sam and I will be looking for you," she smiled as she left.

Gunther liked Maggie and Sam, and was happy to be invited along to the game.

After breakfast, he went to RMCP and met up with Nathan. It was good to see Nathan in a relaxed mood today. "Are you ready to go on rounds?" Nathan asked.

Heading over to the livery they met up with Kevin Townsend. "So, what are you going to do with those extra two horses and wagon?" Nathan inquired.

"I'm not sure about the horses yet, do you know anyone who might need a horse?" Kevin asked Nathan as he was feeding Newton.

"It seems everyone is changing over to automobiles now. It's even expected of all Mounties to. I must admit, it'll be hard, I really am attached to Newton. He's my buddy and he knows everything about me. So, when the time comes, I'm keeping him with me at my house, that's why I'm building a stable. Besides, Allie has Penny now too," Nathan filled Kevin in, "The wagon would be helpful for those of us who don't have an automobile yet. In fact, just last weekend, I had to borrow a wagon to take my family out to the country just for Allie to show them all her filly. So, I'd be interested in it especially with building our new home."

Kevin assured Nathan it would be his, in gratitude for ridding Hope Valley of those outlaws. Nathan appreciated the offer and told Kevin he'd be back after rounds to get it.

When he and Gunther finished feeding their horses they went out for rounds. It was great to take in the country and learn the area. Nathan took time to introduce him to all the neighborhood farms. They saw where St. James Catholic Church was being built and Gunther met Fr. Ricardo. That's when Nathan found out Gunther was Catholic. Fr. Ricardo told him that they were meeting at the O'Neills for mass now and invited him to join them. There was quite a big crew out there and he showed the plans to Nathan and Gunther. Nathan was impressed with the beautiful stain glass windows that were coming from Italy. Fr. Ricardo hoped they'd arrive by fall. They were glad there were no problems to address today and they could return straight home.

Nathan told Gunther that he was going to pick up the wagon, but he could enjoy some free time with it being Saturday. "I'm going to watch the baseball game," Gunther told Nathan, "It's been a few years, but it's my favorite sport."

"There's quite a few your age, so have fun Gunther, you'll have more friends than you know what to do," Nathan chuckled.

Nathan brought the wagon home and his three ladies came out to see it. "I'm going to clean it out and smooth down the rough edges so everyone is able to ride in it," Nathan said, "Ma, I'm going to make a little step stool for you and Dee so I won't have to worry about you getting in and out safely."

"Nathan, this will be nice for us to go on a picnic. Why don't we go tomorrow after church?" Dee smiled up at her husband.

"I guess I better get busy then and work on this wagon now," Nathan kissed Dee on her nose.

Allie offered to help, pitching right in. "I thought you would be working at the Mercantile now?" Nathan asked.

"Not too much with Katie working there now. She's been doing the books, but she helps in the shop too, so Mrs. Yost doesn't need me on a regular basis anymore. But, that's okay, I'd rather go to the baseball games or go out by Penny anyways," Allie explained to Nathan.

"Sounds like you are taking good care of Penny. How's it going?"

"Great, Mr. Peterson told me that Penny knows me so well that she expects me to show up at a certain time, and if I'm not there she paces in the stable until I show up. I sure love her dad!"

"Have you mounted her yet?" Nathan asked.

"With Mr. Peterson only. I saddled and mounted her, but she is a bit hesitant and Mr. Peterson said that's because I have to show her, I'm boss and not just her friend. That's what I'm working on now." Allie was so happy to have her dad's complete attention that she kept sharing with him all her thoughts.

Dee and Emily watched from the window and both of them hugged. It was such a warm fuzzy feeling to see them both happy together. It was then that Emily felt little bun give mommy a kick. "Aww, my littlest angel, Oma loves you too!"

Only the Beginning Chapter 14, Page 95

The Clearwater Cougars came to play the Hope Valley Stallions that afternoon. Most of the town was there from youngest to oldest and all in between. It was a warm summer day and Sam had a asked the girls, Opal, Allie, Karen, and Angela to take turns running the lemonade stand. Several of the boys' mothers brought brownies and cookies that were on a picnic bench nearby that Emily and Anna watched over.

Blankets were strewn all over the grassy area where folks came to sit and watch. The Chickadees were the welcome committee for the visitors from Clearwater. Most of the ladies used parasols to make the sun and heat more tolerable, while the men kept busy coaching their own sons and watching play by play.

Gunther was happy to be out of his uniform and in street clothes. He didn't have to worry about getting dirty. Sam introduced him to the other coaches; Mark, Luke, and John. When these men met Gunther, they learned he was a Mountie but Gunther reassured them he really liked playing baseball himself for six years. Then, once he shared the story of Babe Ruth, that he had already told Maggie, they knew he would make a good assistant coach.

Luke brought Gunther over to meet the team. "Hear you can call him Coach Gunther, but when you see him in uniform, he's Constable. Got it?" The boys nodded, "Okay pitchers and catchers, let's go over to the bullpen and warm up!"

Other players were with the other coaches doing pregame stretches, squats, and toe touches.

Maggie waved as Rosaleen and Katie came to join her. Each of the girls had been dating one of the guys and their hair was brushed into beautiful curls with ribbons, and their plump lips had a touch of rose lipstick. The guys noticed that the girls were wearing some of the new shorter skirts that were coming in style now, which allowed them to cross their legs easily and take off their shoes to wiggle their toes in the grass. There seemed to be a lot of giggling going on over by them.

Naturally doing hard, physical labor these men were developing strong muscles and strong abs which the girls noticed flexing through their shirts. Their high cheekbones caught the sun working outside and they were tan and brawny. Oh, how the hormones were running rampant that afternoon!

Nathan, Dee, and Emily walked over to watch the game. After spreading out a blanket for the ladies, he helped them both get down on the ground gently. Once they were settled with the pillows for them to sit on, he left to look for his dad.

Archie was in Billees just sitting at a table by himself finishing up some pie. Nathan felt badly that his dad was alone, but when Archie looked up from his plate a big smile crossed his face and he called out to him. "Son, here I am. Come by and sit by your old man for a spell."

"Hello Dad, looks like you just enjoyed a piece of apple pie!" Nathan returned his smile, "how would you like to walk with me over to the baseball game. Dee and Ma are over there waiting for you."

"Sure, that sounds good. I was looking for your Ma. I'm glad you found her," he chuckled, "she always wanders off."

Nathan just smiled and said, "I'll run up and get your hat, dad. It's sunny outside and I know your eyes don't do well in the bright sun."

When Nathan went upstairs, he quickly made his dad's bed and tidied up as no one had come by yet today. When he returned his dad was already outside and walking. "Wait for me, dad!" Nathan called. Soon, the four of them were busy watching the game.

The afternoon was so much fun with all the folks there for the game, or simply conversing with friends. The Hope Valley Stallions were leading the game, but by the 7th inning they were tied up. The Clearwater Cougars were on top of their game.

At that point, things were getting a bit tense and some fathers were tending to argue a bit with each other about the umpire's calls. The coaches did their best to keep the fathers quiet and remind them that they were a team and good sports. The boys all knew that, but once in a while a dad would yell and then he had to leave the area, which meant that the boys saw examples of bad sportsmanship. Gunther offered to have a talk with the fathers after the game suggesting that they have a father vs son game, which most everyone thought was a great idea.

Nathan heard what Gunther suggested and was proud of him. He knew this would not only help the fathers learn all the rules, but unite them while being team mates. The game ended with the Cougars winning 12-10 Stallions.

The boys were so hot, they all slipped off their shirts and socks and ran for the pond. As they jumped in, frogs jumped out and the fish scattered. They were splashing and cooling off having fun no matter who won the game. Archie wanted to join them, but Nathan headed him off, inviting him over to the lemonade stand for a glass.

"Dad, why don't you come home with us. You can lay down and take a nap on my bed, while we get some dinner ready," Nathan suggested.

Just then, Dee came up and putting her arm through Archie's she said, "Yes, dad, it's time to rest," as she led the way to her house.

Allie called out and told them she'd be there after cleaning up the lemonade. So, Nathan helped his Ma up, folded the blanket and grabbed the pillows. As he offered his arm to her, she looped her arm through his. "Nathan, your dad seems to be getting worse, ya? When does he go see the doctor?"

"Oh Ma, I'm glad you asked, I have to take him in to see the eye doctor next week. I hope they can operate on his eyes so he can see better," Nathan replied with concern, "I just wish they could help senility."

Emily sighed, "I'm afraid there's nothing to cure that, but once he's home with us, it'll be easier to take care of him."

"Ma, how do you feel about that really"? Nathan stopped and looked intently at his mother.

Emily looked hesitant, "Nathan, what your dad did to us was horrible. We struggled, but as Fr. Ricardo told me, so did your dad. We talked for a long time, Fr. Ricardo and me. He shared with me many a story of men who get lost in addiction whether it's gambling like your dad, or alcohol, or depression, it's all because of their lack of faith in God to provide. They hold on to their problems and won't surrender them. Fr. Ricardo told me Jesus said in St. Matthew's Gospel, "My yolk is easy and my burden is light" part of a larger passage, in which Jesus tells all who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest."

Nathan listened as his Ma continued, "I will never forget what has happened throughout the years, but I'm ready to forgive. Nathan, forgiving is freeing. I have a weight lifted off my shoulders. 'All of us sin and fall short of the glory of God'. The truth is that not only have we fallen short of the glory of God in the past, but there will be moments where we will fall short again in the future. In these moments, you can run back to God, repent, and find forgiveness and grace to cleanse your sins. Emily patted Nathan's hand as they walked back home, "Love, son, just love."

Only the Beginning Chapter 14, Page 96

Sunday was a perfect day for a picnic just a bit less hot, with a cool soft breeze from the north, and puffy clouds sailing in the bright blue skies. Dee was helping Allie fix her hair for Sunday church. Nathan wanted Dee to wear her hair down as he loved to see her long golden locks cascading around her shoulders and down her back. Watching his wife and daughter together, he was happy as a lark. Knowing that Allie needed a mother in her life since she was definitely growing faster than he could keep up, he knew he couldn't have picked out a better woman for Allie than Dee. The two of them were meant to be. and it showed with their love for music, laughter, and hugs. His Ma was part of their world teaching them both about cooking and baking to perfection, but most importantly her deep, abiding faith.

Emily was dressed in her Sunday best, and was picked up by Mr. O'Neil and sat next to Gunther in Sean's automobile. Gunther knew German and they greeted eachother with "Guten tag", which brought out the Irish in Sean with, "Dia dhuit".

"I guess we should stay with English!" Gunther joined in the laughter.

"Thank goodness Fr. Ricardo knows English, or we'd all be learning Italian, ya?" Emily teased.

"Do you know Latin?" Sean asked.

"Only the words at Mass. My parents taught me what we were saying in Latin." Gunther answered.

"Well, Fr. Ricardo is ordering missals for all of the parishioners where one side will be in Latin and the other side will be in English. That will be a big help."

Sean smiled.

When they arrived at the O'Neil's house it seemed smaller, or there were more people attending. Emily knew it was the latter. As everyone was getting settled in, David Landoch asked if anyone knew of a place that Fr. Ricardo could live until the rectory would be built. People were thinking out loud, but nothing seemed to be a good solution, until Bill mentioned the abandoned cabin that he and Gunther had just cleared out with Nathan.

Gunther's eyes perked up, a smile came across his face and he nodded affirmatively, "Yes, that's a good solution. We could have that place fixed up in no time."

Looking around the room, it didn't take long for the parishioners to agree that since no one claimed that cabin, they'd claim it for their man of God. "It's not very big Father, but for one person, it'll be a good temporary place," Bill said.

Fr. Ricardo told his congregation, that he was happy with whatever arrangements they could provide him. In fact, several of the men offered to help. David Lipinski volunteered to get them started on Monday after his farm chores were completed. A few repairs to the windows and outside porch, painting, and a good thorough cleaning was the beginning. The word would get out that any extra furniture given would also be put to good use.

Sean, Mary, and Christy asked if they could all pray for Rick. They expected to pick him up in Clearwater Monday morning. "How is Rick doing?" Molly asked.

Christy smiled broadly while holding Timi Anne, "He's feeling better, awake now most of the day. The x-rays showed no broken bones, thank God. So, that means he can come home tomorrow! Because of his concussion, he'll have to rest at home for a while, but this little girl misses her daddy, and she'll love to have him here with her!"

"Wundebar!" Emily clapped her hands joyfully. All the Lipinski children and others joined in.

Fr. Ricardo called everyone to silence as he prayed for Rick's complete healing and thanked the Lord for no broken bones. After Mass everyone usually stayed for potluck, but Emily asked for a ride home. "The Grants are going for a picnic!" she announced happily.

When she arrived, the rest of her family including Archie, were riding down the road to the house in their new wagon that Newton was pulling. "We're going to need Penny to help pull all of us Allie," Nathan suggested, "while the rest of you change out of your Sunday clothes and pack a picnic lunch, I'll talk to Mr. Peterson about this."

At the Peterson farm, Nathan caught the family coming home from church too. Nathan explained to Dan what he wanted to do. "Do you think Penny would come with me?"

"I don't know, you should've brought Allie. He trusts her, but let's try."

When they went out to the pasture where the horses were grazing, the two men slowly approached them. Penny seemed relaxed with Mr. Peterson so she didn't run around, and they were able to harness Penny. Then, they placed the bridle over Penny's head and connected the reins. So far, so good. Letting her settle with that they then hitched her to the wagon next to Newton. Newton was quite the gentleman and whinnied at Penny.

"You got her now, she'll be fine especially when she sees Allie!"

Nathan nodded, "Thanks again, we'll be back later. Have a good day!"

When Nathan arrived home, Allie came running out to see Penny right away, giving her and Newton both a carrot. The rest of the family was ready for their afternoon picnic. Nathan helped his Ma get in, Allie, his dad, and Dee with little bun! They even found room for some fishing rods and a picnic basket.

It wasn't long when they arrived over at the place where their new house was being built. Everyone was anxious to see it. When they pulled the horses to a stop, they all gazed at the structure imagining the rooms inside, the Christmas tree in the window, sitting in the swing on the porch while watching the sunset over the mountains, and indoor plumbing! It was heartwarming thinking of the many memories that would be made in their new home.

They drove the horses over to the stream where the horses could drink. Setting out the blanket, passing out the food, chatting about the house, and the little bun that would be arriving, they were all enjoying the lovely day! Dee walked over to the tree where Nathan had asked her to marry him. Nathan came over, wrapped his arms around his wife, and placed his hand on top of hers joining with her, as they gently traced with her index finger over the heart Nathan had carved in the tree with their initials. Dee turned to Nathan and their eyes burned with love as she melted into his lips.

Only the Beginning Chapter 14, Page 97

It was a glorious Monday as Lee drove Christy to Clearwater to pick up Rick. Leaving Timi Anne home with Rick's parents was not her first choice, but a practical one. Not knowing what to expect, Christy brought pillows for him to make him as comfortable as possible for the automobile ride home. She just had bathed so her hair was shiny and clean, and had put one of her better dresses on. With a bit of lipstick and a dab of it on both cheeks, she was very much the lovely wife.

Anxious to have Rick back home she was a chatterbox all the way there, although Lee was quite used to it. Christy had missed Rick more than she thought was possible. The two of them had grown accustomed to being together and each had found themselves lost without the other. When Rick saw Christy after what had been an unusually long weekend, his eyes danced as he beheld the sight of her.

She wanted to rush to him, but was careful that she might throw him off balance. He held out his arms and they embraced tenderly, than sealed their emotions with a long kiss.

"It's so good to have you back in my arms Christy!" Rick said as he smelled the sweet fragrance coming from her hair, "It seemed like forever before I could see you darling."

"I'm so grateful that you are on the mend and coming home. Rick, it could've been so much worse, I can't help but think of..." Christy began to shiver.

"Hey, it's over. I'm here and so ready to see our daughter and family!" Rick assured her.

Lee walked back by them and smiling widely said, "I have your discharge papers here, with orders for a follow up with Dr. Shepherd before you return to work. Are you ready to go home?"

On the ride home Christy and Lee brought Rick up to date on what happened to the thugs and how Bouchard, Toliver, and Walden were all connected and behind bars now awaiting trial. Rick was relieved to hear they would no longer be a threat.

When Lee drove through town he honked his Model T so everyone who looked, saw that Rick was in the automobile and back home. Those outside waved happily, and people came running from inside and joined in with clapping and cheering. It definitely was even more of a warm homecoming when Nathan and Bill on their horses, escorted them on the way to the O'Neill farm. Christy's family, and Fr. Ricardo were all there to greet him too.

"Wow, I feel like a celebrity! You all make me feel so loved," he said as his parents, Mary and Sean, ran to greet him. Mary handed Timi Anne to Christy so she could hug her son. As Rick slowly pulled away from them, he stared at his wife and baby, and with one big swoop held them both tightly to himself.

Timi Anne began babbling and having just finished a bottle of her mommy's milk, let out another big burp which made everyone laugh. She had a way of chiming in at the right time.

Inviting everyone inside, Mary had cake, an assortment of cookies, and Rick's favorite dessert, strawberry rhubarb pie. With lemonade, tea, and coffee, the social gathering was very nice and pleasant, however, no one wanted to keep Rick busy. They all bid goodbye little by little. His dad was leaving with Fr. Ricardo and David Lipinski to meet with the other volunteers to work on renovating the cabin.

Mary left the couple alone with their daughter to relax and enjoy as she went out to the garden.

Back in town, Elizabeth, Rosemary, Dee, and Minnie, with the Chickadees had started the Summer Bible Camp earlier in the morning. The turnout of children was just as they had hoped, only missing the Lipinski children. When they heard Lee honk, they all ran out of the church and waved!

Dee handed out the words of the songs so they could sing each day the same one to open and the same one to close. The rest of the days would each have other songs, matching the theme of the day. Some songs they had already learned in church or school. Now, most of the tunes included actions of clapping, dancing, and snapping fingers which proved very popular and fun. Allie, Karen, and Angela enjoyed leading the younger children, having as much fun as they did.

Rosemary was just as excited as the children to select who would be Noah, his wife, and their adult children. Some just wanted to be an animal, like a lion, elephant, or monkey. Pastor Joseph was nominated, without him being there, to be the voice of God, and everyone approved. Janice was going to be the narrator as it was her idea to have the story of Noah's Ark to focus on.

The Chickadees helped with measuring the children and coming up with ideas for their costumes. Dottie had stopped by to see what they would need so she could go through the back room and see what she could contribute. The rest of the costumes the Chickadees would be busy sewing and making.

Teresa was having fun with the girls making a cross necklace as a jewelry craft. She had a table for them and one for the boys to make a cross necktie. The Chickadees took turns helping her each day as she had so many ideas to share to keep those little hands busy!

Elizabeth worked side by side with Minnie writing Scripture on the chalkboard and seeing who could memorize the verse of the day, and remember it as the week went along. When telling the children a verse they often acted it out with the help of Dee, Rosemary, or one of the Chickadees.

There was always snacks provided that they would eat outside and sometimes while taking a nature walk. One day they met the seniors who were sitting and bird watching. They had the children mesmerized with imitations of the bird calls that each kind of birds sang and tried to whistle the tune.

Jane had them all, even the ladies, laughing as she taught them the Jewish dance, the Horah, that they danced when celebrating. At the end of the week when they would present to the parents their play, they would all join in to dance the Horah as a celebration of the end of the flood. Joyful times were abounding.

When Nathan finished visiting with Rick and his family and friends Monday, he and Gunther rode around checking on all the work crews in the area. There were so many building operations going on that it kept them busy but was good to see all the new developments. Watching the town grow, was a sign of progress.

Now that the industrial revolution had inspired assembly line work methods begun by Henry Ford, Model T automobiles were replacing the horses which meant there was also a need for an expanded gasoline station and automobile mechanics. One new thing led to another, from running electrical and telephone lines, indoor plumbing, electric appliances, and the radio. The Canadian National Railways developed a radio network with stations including Vancouver. Its schedule included concerts, comic opera, school broadcasts, and historical drama but only for a few hours a week.

At the same time silent films were becoming very popular. Sam and Maggie, along with the other young adults were particularly interested in having monthly showings. Billees was the perfect place to host it, as it already had a piano to play during the viewing. Bill and Lee both agreed that they could look into developing a regular time slot in which Billees would be open just for the show, for a dance, or a festivity. Together with Rosemary they would keep a calendar with reserved dates for special events. The group decided to call themselves The Hopefuls and they would be the entertainment club for the town of Hope Valley.

Lee had been busy hiring and gave names to Nathan for him to check on their previous employment, residence, and any police records. Nathan gave this detail to Gunther as his own assignment. This was a relief for Lee, as he needed as much time as he could spare working during the summer months.

Canada can be brutal in the winter, so all the work had to be finished by November or wait until late spring next year. If any of the men wanted to stay during the winter, there would be plenty of inside work to do too. However, Lee wanted dry, heated places for his men and any families that would be joining them. This meant that plans for the second road of row houses would have to be completed soon, as he didn't want them to live in the tent city.

Building a bigger school was important too, with the new families moving in town. That plan would take another year. Superintendent Landis had left to teach music, so Elizabeth had to present the plan to the new Superintendent Malone. She was expecting him to come sometime in the next week or two.

Elizabeth had to meet with Fiona, so after the summer Bible Camp she walked over to talk with her, "What a great day it has been today!"

"Yes, it has been. Seeing Rick come home and enjoying the children at the Bible Camp, we all needed a lift of our spirits!" Fiona agreed, "you know, I haven't played the flute in such a long time and getting it out the other day, reminded me of how much fun it was to play. I'm glad though my audience was only for the children!"

"They enjoyed having the mayor there playing along with them, believe me." Elizabeth smiled, "Fiona, there's going to be a visitor to our town that I'm expecting soon. We have a new School Superintendent, Mr. Malone who will be stopping by to visit all the schools in the area during the summer. We have to make sure he realizes that the growth of our town will dictate that we expand or build a new school."

"Yes, I've been thinking about this myself. It's just a domino effect with more people who will need homes, merchandise, clothes, schools, church...whew! I think that it might be best if we build a new school and that way the church will have its own building. However, I have to call the town council together and discuss it with them," Fiona stated.

"Please try to call one this week. I will attend of course, but I need the support of all of you in order to have Superintendent Malone to listen. Can you do it soon?" Elizabeth asked with a pleading look.

"Consider it done, Elizabeth. I'll tell the council to meet in two days. Once we have their support, we will present it to all of Hope Valley at our town hall meeting."

"Thank you, Fiona," Elizabeth smiled, "See you at Bible Camp tomorrow."

Nathan took a walk over to Billees to check on Archie, but there were a few of the Chickadees who had stopped over after their session at Bible Camp and brought him outside for a walk to get some fresh air. While he was out with Jane, Joyce went upstairs and tidied up his room, making his bed, and putting his clothes away. She walked over to the window and let the summer air in, took a quick last check and then joined Jane and Archie.

"Hello Jane!" Nathan greeted her.

Jane blushed and smiled, "Why hello there!"

"Dad, I see the ladies haven't forgotten you. You are a lucky man!" Nathan said.

"Now, son don't go telling your Ma, I don't want to get in trouble when I get back home." Archie winked

.

Joyce came walking swiftly over to join them, "Hello Archie! Hello Nathan!"

"What about me?" Jane teased, "don't I get a hello?"

"Oh, for heaven's sake Jane, I always see you, but look at these two. How can you not be blinded by those beautiful blue eyes!" Joyce blurted out.

Nathan started to laugh, "Joyce dear, you are too kind. I agree, my dad does have beautiful blue eyes! Well, I'll let you go for your walk. Enjoy the day!"

Jane rolled her eyes at Joyce. "Guess, we lost our Mountie, darn! I was hoping he'd walk with us."

"Hey, you've got me!" Archie exclaimed as he opened both of his arms for Jane and Joyce to put their arms through his as they headed towards the pond with Archie proud as a peacock.

Minnie was very pleased with the way the Bible Camp was going, better than she thought it would. Everyone involved were excited to do their part. The ladies were having just as much, if not more fun, than the children. Sewing, crafting, singing, dancing, acting, all together cemented their friendships even more. Elizabeth, Dee, Rosemary, and Minnie were becoming known as the Hope Valley dynamos. If they set their mind to something, consider it done!

Each day the children were having a gay time practicing their parts in the Noah's Ark play. Rosemary planned on taking them to Billees on Friday to practice on the stage. Pastor Joseph was given an hour off of work to join them to say his part, when 'God' spoke. Those that were animals were especially funny with their noises, particularly the monkeys. When Dee taught the songs with animation, they were much more fun and kept the children's attention. Playing instruments too really made the music come alive. Jane took the dancing practice of the Horah outside, which caught passerby's eyes and they'd stop to watch the joyful dance. Teresa had help with the crafts and the children went home so proud of their new projects. Other ladies were in charge of the end of the week potluck dinner on Friday night at Billees. Every family was to bring a dish to pass and as always. Fr. Ricardo was asked to give the grace before their meal, and Emily was baking up a storm for desserts. Sam and Maggie were in charge this time as Rosemary was already busy with the play part of the dinner.

"Maggie, it's going to be fun working on Friday with you again. You always have such an easy-going attitude even with all the work we have to do," Sam told her.

Maggie brushed it off, "Growing up with all the siblings I had, it takes a lot to faze me. I'm used to last minute things going wrong, but we always make do."

"Well, what I meant to say, was that I not only like working with you, but I like you, Maggie, the woman. Things between us are so natural and just flow. I felt too anxious with Elizabeth, so as much as we tried, it just didn't develop into more than a friendship. I'm hoping you and I can become more than just friends," Sam said as he stood still in front of Maggie looking deeply into her eyes.

Maggie was taken aback by Sam's confession to her, yet it was what she had hoped to hear from him some day. Realizing that today was that 'some day', she began to smile. "I'd like that too, Sam."

Sam reached down and grabbed Maggie's hands. "If you don't mind then, Miss Lipinski, I'd like to ask you if you'd have this dance with me."

Maggie laughed, but Sam surprised her as he started to hum a tune. Keeping her hands in his, he swept her around the empty room while humming a waltz melody. The faster they went, the more they laughed. They didn't even notice Bill walk over to the Victrola and put on a record. When the music hit their ears, they stopped and looked around, but saw no one. Sam just shrugged and the couple resumed dancing, smiling, and laughing. Bill watched from a corner and enjoyed what he saw. He was so glad he had these two working for him as they had brought joy to the place. He was getting compliments from customers about them, and now their new ideas of hosting films and dances, would really add to the livelihood of the place and the town.

Rosemary booked a night for Bill's bachelor party and was working on making it THE talk of the town. She had already been speaking with Nathan and Lee discussing how to top previous parties. They had a few ideas they were tossing around, now they just had to see if they could make them work. When Rosemary came home after helping with the Bible play one afternoon, she laid down to rest as she was feeling tired. She was very startled when Lee woke her up when he sat next to her on the bed.

"Rosemary," Lee shook her, "honey, wake up."

Rosemary squeezed her eyes, stretched, and yawned. "Lee, what is it dear?"

"Honey, it's 4:00 in the afternoon, what are you doing sleeping now?" Lee asked.

"Oh, Lee!" Rosemary sat straight up. Looking around she asked frantically, "Where's Paul?"

"Relax Rosemary, Paul is fine, he's at baseball practice. What I want to ask is, are you feeling all right?"

"Oh my, I was so tired that I decided to lay down. I didn't even think I'd fall asleep, nevertheless, this late. Excuse me, Lee, I have to get dinner started." As Rosemary stood up she felt just a tiny bit woozy, but after taking a deep breath, she felt fine.

"All right Rosie, as long as you're feeling up to it. I was just surprised when you didn't come back to the office to work on the Valley Voice, so I decided to check on you. No rush, please," Lee cautioned his wife.

"Dear me, I have to get the paper printed. Shoot! I can't make dinner and print the paper." Rosemary sighed.

"Not to worry, I'll have Robert print it and he and Harper will deliver it as usual. I want you to stay here and just relax. When you feel sure you're not too tired, then make dinner, but Paul and I won't starve if we wait," and with that Lee kissed Rosemary on the cheek.

After Lee left, Rosemary brushed her hair, washed her face and went out on the back porch to get some fresh air. Feeling refreshed, she went back inside and started to peel some carrots and potatoes.

She was frying pork chops when Paul came bounding in. "Hi mom, it sure smells good in here."

"It does? Good, I wasn't sure, " Rosemary said, "come over here and give your mom a kiss."

Right behind him, came Lee. He was delighted to see Rosemary up and he too complimented her on the enticing aroma coming from the kitchen.

"Rosie," he said as he kissed her on her forehead, "do not worry your pretty little head, the paper is printed and on it's way being delivered as we speak." Then he walked over to Paul and greeting him too, they sat down to say grace.

Passing the dinner around, Rosemary got up. "Excuse me, but I have to get some fresh air." She ran out to the back porch and Lee found her throwing up.

"Rosie? Are you sick?"

"I hope not Lee," she sighed.

"Rosie, honey, have you been feeling nauseous today?" Lee asked as he walked her back into the house to sit on the sofa.

"No, I don't know what came over me. Lee, I hope I'm not getting a stomach virus as I so want to finish the Summer Bible Camp!" Rosemary moaned.

"Why don't you put your feet up and lay here. Paul and I will clean up the kitchen. You just rest," Lee said lovingly as he took off Rosemary's shoes, and placed a pillow under her head.

"Lee, Paul, thank you both. I'm sure I'll feel better in a little while." Rosemary sighed.

When Lee and Paul finished up in the kitchen, Paul went back outside in the front to play catch with the other boys. Lee lifted Rosemary's feet, sat down, and then gave her a soft foot rub. "How's that feel?"

"Oh, honey, it's wonderful. The nausea left me and you're pampering is so nice!" Rosemary smiled.

"Listen Rosie, if you don't get better, you stay home, the other ladies can manage. I don't want you so tired, and suffer with an upset stomach besides. Promise me?" Lee asked.

Rosemary sat up and snuggled next to Lee. "Lee, honey, I think it was just a fluke. I feel fine now," as she kissed his cheek.

The next morning, Rosemary woke up and felt good. She reassured Lee she was going to be all right and left for the church camp with Elizabeth and Dee. On their way there she filled in the other two what happened to her when she went home yesterday. Both ladies were concerned she might be coming down with an illness, but Rosemary stuck to her guns, "I'm sure I was just overtired and something didn't agree with me. I feel absolutely fine now!"

"Just let us know if you need to go home, please," Elizabeth cautioned her.

That morning it was a bit rainy, so Bible camp had to be held inside the church. In order to give the children a little change, they walked over to Billees when the rain let up a bit and practiced their play, songs, and dance. With more space to perform all the children really enjoyed themselves. There, they had an audience with luncheon guests for their practice. Archie, Sam, and Maggie all clapped their hands with joyous approval. Lee came over to check on Rosemary, and stayed there with her and Paul while he ate lunch. After he left with Paul, Rosemary didn't say a peep, but the cooking aroma coming from the kitchen did start to bother her, so she just excused herself and went outside to get some fresh air. Elizabeth walked out to check on her and started to be suspicious that Rosemary just might be pregnant. Remembering when she felt that way when first pregnant with little Jack, but not recognizing it until Abigail shared with her that she was pregnant, she reminded Rosemary. "How long have you been feeling like this?"

"Just waves here and there, but Elizabeth, I'm not sick in the morning. I doubt I'm pregnant, as you know I've been barren for years." Rosemary sadly brushed the idea off.

"Well, that doesn't mean you aren't pregnant Rosemary. When the good Lord decides it's time, we just need to be grateful!" Elizabeth smiled.

Rosemary went quiet. Thinking about it more, she realized that Elizabeth might possibly be right. After all Abraham's wife, Sarah gave birth to a son when she was 90! That caused her to burst out laughing. Elizabeth stared at Rosemary but couldn't help but join in the laughter too when Rosemary blurted out about Sarah. "We can use that story next year at Bible camp," Rosemary giggled.

"Rosemary, why don't you go over and see Dr. Faith and get checked. Make sure you're not coming down with a something. Hopefully, you'll be given good news instead!" Elizabeth suggested.

"You're right, I need to nip this in the bud, but I should work on the newspaper." Rosemary hesitated.

"It won't take long, just go and you'll have peace of mind, but let me know!" Elizabeth told her as she and little Jack walked back home.

Rick was doing all right and he was enjoying being home with Timi Anne. So, Christy went over to Nichols and Dimes to help out. Today she had Flo over for her 'spa' day. "I'm so glad I was able to give you a little treat today. I've been taking a lady whenever I have time, to reciprocate for helping Rick and I out with getting started. I can guarantee that you will feel wonderful after this facial!"

Flo sat back in her chair, and let Christy do her magic. Wrapping her hair in a towel, placing a cucumber slice over each eye, and then massaging her face with a cool, lightly fragrant lotion, Flo fell sound asleep. Fiona mentioned it could happen, but this was the first time it happened to her. Christy smiled as whatever she was doing, Flo was totally relaxed. She continued giving Flo a hand and foot massage and never once did Flo stir. When Christy was just about to proceed with the manicure and pedicure, Flo awoke. "Oh my!", she reached up, took off the cucumbers, found the clock, and declared, "Christy I'm sorry, I must get back to the switchboard. Allie will think I left for good! But you are fabulous my dear!"

Christy unwrapped the towel off of Flo's hair, and off she went back to the Mercantile.

Dee surprised Nathan as she walked in the office, pulled down the shade, and promptly sat on his lap as he was sitting in his chair. Nathan noticed she wasn't as light as she used to be and placed his hand on Dee's tummy waiting for little bun to make a move.

Dee just smiled down at Nathan and lifted his chin up. He never stopped taking her breath away with his chiseled good looks. The high cheekbones, the cleft in his chin, the strong jawline, long neck, and those electric blue eyes which penetrated her heart, all made her feel she was the luckiest wife in town. Oh, and that long, thick, wavy, dark hair she loved to run her fingers through, she never could resist and this time was no different. Leaning down, she sweetly kissed him as if there were no tomorrow.

As their lips slowly parted, Nathan looked into Dee's eyes with deep love and smiled. "What brings you here right now, like this?"

"You! Just thinking we will be caring for a baby in a few months, and I just want to remember you and I, just as a couple, before the bun arrives, and we have a big household full of family living all under one roof. Not that I don't want that, it's just that we need to promise each other some alone time. You are my hero Nathan Grant, and once in a while, I don't want to share you with anyone else, I love you!"

Nathan nodded his head in agreement, looking at his wife with her long golden hair, clear sky-blue eyes, dainty nose, and the upward curve of her lips, he knew he was the luckiest husband in town. "Dee sweetheart, I feel the same way. You complete me. I promise you; we will always find time to be alone, just the two of us, and I love you!"
