"How was Halloween? Did they cry?" Patty asked a bit too enthusiastically. She and Liz just made it back, and it was basically the only thing on their minds.
"It was splendid; everyone had a great time. The only downside was they all got tired at around 1 am and left before we could watch anything. Ends up Spirit's favorite movie was Whore-o-ween, not Horrorween, so I watched 'Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter' by myself again." Both of Kid's weapons knew that 'everyone had a great time' would be a huge lie, since that's what he says after their Halloweens together. He somehow deludes himself to really believe that though.
Liz raised an eyebrow. "So what exactly were you doing before everybody got 'tired' and left?"
"We were almost done trick or treating, then I did the same trick I used on you two last year."
"The whole 'dead person you hated/killed from the past is alive again, taunts you, kills you, and then nobody shows up to your funeral besides your disappointed child self, making you regret your life's choices' trick?" she asked.
"Well, yes, but it sounds bad if you put it like that. I would call it a subconscious look into our feelings about death, exploring both the frightening nuances in past deaths and future ones. All in all, a very in-theme way of spending the holiday, and a valuable look into our views on mortality."
Patty was giggling as he explained his take on the night, which even she knew was heavily warped. "Who'd you choose for past deaths?" she asked.
"Medusa, Arachne, White Star, and Masimune."
"Aka, our worst enemies, a father that Black Star never knew but still has to pay consequences for being related to, and a brother that Tsubaki loved but had to murder… and you see nothing extreme about that?"
"Again, it sounds bad if you put it like that. The whole thing was obviously fake; it essentially looked like a puppet show. Besides, reviving the dead is quite impossible, unless they're killed with a special weapon like Sid was, so it's nowhere close to being realistic in that way either. They were the ones to suggest who 'came back' anyway. They told me what they wanted each illusion to say too. I didn't come up with anything myself, other than the themes."
Liz sighed. "Did they suggest these things out loud, or did you read their souls?"
Kid was silent for a second. "Out loud… Although I suppose it would be hard to tell the difference with how heightened my soul perception becomes…"
"Our friends hate yoouuu~" Patty said through hysterical laughter.
Kid rolled his eyes. "No they don't, stop exaggerating."
"Did they tell you not to talk to them until we got back?" Liz asked
"Sort of, but not like that." Kid's response made Patty laugh even harder.
"Seriously, this is why we told you not to celebrate Halloween with anybody. Come on, let's go apologize to them and tell them that we told them so."
Liz patted Kid's head. "You see, he really does just go crazy. He meant to do absolutely nothing wrong, and everything that happened was 100% just recreating your worst-case scenarios. It was a look into your subconscious, not his, and not accurate in the slightest. Except him calling you mortals, that's just him kinda being a dick."
The four students were sitting at the park where they were invited to, listening as Liz mostly gave an explanation for the events of last week's Halloween. It was worlds better than Kid's 'it's just a trick' explanation.
"Yeah, my apologies. I really didn't mean any harm. It shouldn't have been painful, just mildly uncomfortable at the most," Kid added. He still didn't really understand why his friends were mad in the first place, but he cared about them enough to mean his apology regardless.
"Next year, run away to New York~ It was soooo fun!" Patty cooed.
"So," Liz smiled pleadingly, "Please don't hold it against him. Or us. He'll just be his normal brand of crazy the other 364 days of the year.
"Or 365 on leap years~"
The four students looked at each other, then back at Kid. It was obvious that his once soulless yellow eyes were full of empathy and sorrow again. They were the same eyes that their best friend had, with a soul behind it that they couldn't stay mad at.
Black Star was the first one to change his blank expression, and he made it a smile. "You know, all in all that was a pretty awesome halloween~"
"...Really?" Kid asked.
Black Star nodded, then Maka did too. "In hindsight, it was a pretty interesting thought experiment… And we were warned…"
"It was better than sitting at home doing nothing all day," Soul added.
"Okay, we want you to forgive him, not encourage him," Liz mumbled.
Tsubaki smiled at Kid. "I forgive you."
"Same."
"Yeah."
"Just maybe don't expect us to celebrate with you next year."
Kid smiled back at his friends. "Yeah, that's fair."
"So, do you guys wanna celebrate Thanksgiving together?" Patty asked.
That got all of them distracted, talking about the next holiday to come. One that they'd spend together as friends, no matter how crazy one of them gets on halloween.
A/N: Finished~ Finally~~ I don't know how to end things or else this would have came out way sooner. Heh, I remember when I wanted to finish this story by October 31st… anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this chapter, which admittedly was pretty short, or as the story as a whole :) I might make a sequel or maybe a prequel with Liz and Patty, but I most likely won't. I have other Soul Eater fanfictions though, so give those a read if you'd like. But not the Kid's Worst Nightmare one, I'm rewriting that. Thank you all for reading and sticking with my terrible update schedule!
This is rambling that you 100% don't have to read, but if you like reading about behind the scenes stuff here's some fun facts. This story took so long to write for the most part because I'm out of practice writing everyone that's not Kid Liz or Patty, who are purposely written out of character or out of the story, whoopsies on my part here, so I'd lose writing motivation a lot. The "twist" of the story was definitely what I was most interested in. Speaking of said "twist", the costumes of the characters hint to it. They dress up as characters from Alice in Wonderland, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Wizard of Oz- all of which have dreams integral to their plot, hinting at the fact that everything they see throughout the night is fake. Kid was Ryuk because he was a shinigami just trying to have a good time. I don't actually consider the reveal in chapter 11 as a twist btw, but it was a twist to the characters for sure. Being the author and knowing where it was going to end before even knowing how it was going to start probably made me biased into thinking that the "twist" was obvious. I was going to make it so the funeral backstories majorly contradicted each other, but I thought that was too obvious and just made them minorly contradict instead. IDK how to end authors' notes either lmao. If you have any questions, now that it's over, I'd happily answer. Thanks again for reading.
