Inside Night City there is little room for naïveté. The so-called city of dreams is ever so willing to chew up and spit out people; David Martinez knows this reality very well. When Kerry first meets V, after the dramatics and the breaking and entering, he thinks: God, this kid looks sick. And that's obvious, of course it is. He logically knows V is sick even if he selfishly forgets to mention it during their little talks. V walks and talks and fights as if nothing is wrong and it's almost easy to pretend it's not real until you look. V is dying.

That and the hypocrisy. Jumping in, asking if Johnny was ok like V was anything even remotely resembling the pinnacle of mental well-being. Like he wasn't the one having panic attacks in the bathroom like some rookie Merc. V's shit at coping.
