The Spring Flower
"Could you do something for me?" May asked me one day.
"I'd do anything for you, May," I said.
"Come on! Let's battle! I wanna understand everything about you and your Pokémon! Then, I want you to understand everything about me and mine!" she said.
She called out a Delcatty, and I called out my Hariyama. Delcatty easily outmaneuvered Hariyama and used a Charm move to harshly lower Hariyama's Attack. Hariyama struck back with a Close Combat attack, which did a fair amount of damage.
This triggered Delcatty's Cute Charm Ability, leaving Hariyama infatuated. Delcatty used a Baby-Doll Eyes move to lower Hariyama's Attack even more. Hariyama was too in love with Delcatty to do anything.
Delcatty used Baby-Doll Eyes again. Hariyama fought through the infatuation and struck back with another Close Combat, knocking Delcatty out.
She sent out a Beautifly. I recalled Hariyama and sent out my Swellow. Swellow easily outsped Beautifly and hit it with a Brave Bird attack, which did a lot of damage. Swellow itself was damaged from Brave Bird's recoil.
Beautifly struck back with a Psychic attack, which both did a fair amount of damage and lowered Swellow's Special Defense. Swellow struck back with another Brave Bird and knocked out Beautifly. Brave Bird's recoil then knocked out Swellow itself.
She called out an Altaria, and I called out my Salamence. Salamence's Intimidate Ability activated and lowered Altaria's attack. Salamence outmaneuvered Altaria easily and hit it with a Dragon Claw attack, which did a lot of damage.
Altaria used a Cotton Guard attack to drastically raise its Defense. Salamence hit Altaria with another Dragon Claw, but it didn't do as much damage as the last time. The back-and-forth between Cotton Guard and Dragon Claw continued until Altaria was finally knocked out.
She sent out an Aggron. I recalled Salamence and sent out my Flygon. Flygon outsped Aggron easily and hit it with an Earthquake attack.
This would've knocked Aggron out in one hit if not for Aggron's Sturdy Ability activating. Aggron struck back with an Iron Head attack, which both did damage and made Flygon flinch. Flygon hit Aggron with another Earthquake and knocked it out.
She called out a Swampert. I recalled Flygon and called out my Sceptile. Sceptile easily outmaneuvered Swampert and knocked it out with only one Energy Ball attack.
She sent out a Blaziken and Mega Evolved it. I recalled Sceptile and sent Flygon back out. Flygon and Blaziken were evenly matched in speed.
Blaziken knocked out Flygon with one High Jump Kick attack. I sent Salamence back out and Mega Evolved it. Salamence outsped Blaziken and knocked it out with a single Earthquake.
"Thanks, Jermaine! That was really, really fun!" she said.
We went to a nearby Pokémon Center to heal our parties. As we relaxed, she said she wanted to try her hand at Pokémon Contest Spectaculars but wasn't sure if she could do it. I assured her she was a great Trainer and could do anything she put her mind to. I also told her I'd support her the same way she always supported me.
We visited Verdanturf Town and went to the Contest Hall. She signed up for a Normal Rank Contest. She received a Contest Pass and a Ribbon case as part of the registration. She told me she was excited, basically throwing herself on me in the process. I wished her luck.
She used Beautifly in the Contest. They dazzled the judges with Beautifly's Air Slash, Psychic, and Silver Wind attacks. May won and earned a Ribbon. Afterwards, Contest Spectacular idol Lisia approached her.
"May! Wow! Gratz! I watched it all! You were great! You've gotta keep up this pace and just go as far as you can go! Become a real, massive Contest star! I've got a good feeling about you!" Lisia said.
May later competed in a Super Rank Contest at Fallarbor Town's Contest Hall. She used Delcatty. They impressed the judges with Delcatty's Attract, Baby-Doll Eyes, Charm, and Disarming Voice attacks. May won and earned another Ribbon.
"That's so cool! Gratz on making it to Super Rank, May! Looks like we've reached the next chapter in your story! It's so marvelous! I'm sure you're on the path to Contest stardom! You'll be a star!" Lisia said.
May soon participated in a Hyper Rank Contest at Slateport City's Contest Hall. She used Altaria and Mega Evolved it. They wowed the judges with Altaria's Dragon Pulse, Moonblast, and Sky Attack moves. Altaria Mega Evolving also helped May earn more points. May won and earned her third Ribbon.
"You've finally made it! You've won a Hyper Rank Contest! Wow! Fantastic! You're totally on fire, May! I'm sure you'll blast right through the next rank, too!" Lisia said.
May later took part in a Master Rank Contest at Lilycove City's Contest Hall. She used Swampert and Mega Evolved it. They impressed the judges with Swampert's Ice Punch and Waterfall attacks. As was the case with Altaria, Swampert Mega Evolving increased the amount of points May received.
May won, earning both her fourth Ribbon and the Ribbon Cup. Her other prizes were a bouquet of flowers and a gold tiara. Tears of joy welled up in her eyes and streamed down her face.
"May! You did it! You won! It's truly incredible! I couldn't tear my eyes away! Amazing! You are so amazing! I don't have enough words to congratulate you! It's just brilliant!" Lisia said.
