Chapter 3
The school assembly are even more boring with a second hand embarrassment from Jenny Joyce as she starts a terrible performance as she is sings "Emotions" from Maria Carey while using a black sheet over her and her best friend Aisling.
James looks around the hall, trying to understand what is going on. He turns to Erin for an answer.
'I don't understand. Is the sheet meant to represent something? Because I am totally confused.'
Erin lifts her upper lip, while raising her eyebrows uncomfortably. 'I have no idea.'
Orla turns to the two. 'It is meant to represent raw emotions. Love is strong and powerful and the black sheet is the tool to connect the two lovers.'
James winces. 'Okay…' he responds, even more confused.
Michelle rolls her eyes. 'Who actually gives a shit. The quicker we get out of here, the better.'
The group continue to watch as Jenny and Aisling continue singing, until Jenny starts barking like a dog in the middle of the song.
Everyone in the hall starts to chuckle awkwardly as Jenny continues to bark. Jenny eyes starts to panic while grabbing her throat as she continues the barking like a hiccup, unable to stop herself.
Aisling tilts her head confusingly. 'Are you alright Jenny?'
Jenny tries to say no, but barking keeps coming out.
Sister Michaels, whilst trying to stop laughing, gets up from her chair. 'Thank you, Miss Joyce. That's probably the best one you've ever done ever.'
Jenny finally speaks. 'But I didn't-!'
'That's enough now, you can sit down.'
Embarrassed, Jenny walks off stage with Aisling.
The group walk out of assembly, laughing at what happened, except for James who was more curious about it.
'That was cracker! Jenny can bark proper.' Michelle said, trying to stop herself laughing.
Erin nods. 'Aye that was the best one. I didn't think Jenny had it in her.'
James frowns in thought. 'I don't think she did.'
'Oh, what you banging on about now, James?' Michelle groans.
'Jenny won't do that. She wanted everything to be perfect all the time and doesn't want to mess that up by barking.' James turns to Erin. 'I don't think Jenny did it on purpose.
Michelle scoffs. 'It sure shit looks like it.'
James rolls his eyes in annoyance. 'I'm going to keep an eye on Jenny, since none of you are taking this seriously.'
James walks off, leaving the girls confused.
'What up with him?' Erin asks.
Orla tilts her head. 'Maybe he slept on the wrong side of the bed? They say it makes people irritated.'
'That's just a saying Orla.' Erin points out.
Orla shakes her head. 'Not necessarily. I woke up on the bottom part of the bed the other day and it made me feel off balance and couldn't concentrate on my walk.'
Michelle turns away from everyone as she crosses her arms. 'Oh, who actually gives a fuck about James. Let him do what he wants.'
Claire winces, deciding to take it more seriously. 'What if he's right? What if Jenny didn't plan to do that?'
Michelle laughs. 'Well if it wasn't, it's hardly going to ruin "Miss Perfects" life. See you girls later.'
Michelle walks off.
Claire turns to Erin. 'I think you need to look into this, Erin. What happened in there wasn't normal.'
'Why me?' Erin groans. 'Why do I have to look into this?'
'Oh I don't know. Maybe because it has something to do with you being a Slayer and it's your job to look into these things?' Claire says sarcastically.
Erin looks at Claire, annoyed with that statement.
'Fine.' She said. 'I'll see what I can do.'
James is hiding behind the bushes outside the school, watching Jenny and her choir group practicing. James keeps staring, trying to find anything strange that might happen. He doesn't know when it might happen, but he knows it will happen soon.
'What're you doing?'
James yelps and turns behind to find Erin standing behind him.
'Bloody hell Erin!' James snaps, trying not to keep his voice down.
'You're trying to find something strange, well I got an answer. A wee teenage english fella staring at teenage Irish girls in bushes.' Erin smirks.
James shakes his head and turns back to the Choir group.
'I've only been here for an hour and nothing happening yet.'
Erin rolls her eyes. 'Isn't there a better way for your "look out?" We could just sit over there on that bench together and keep an eye on them. That way we be less conspicuous than hiding behind bushes and stare at them for an hour.'
James looks at the bench, unsure about it. 'Won't it be starting rumours? You know, the two of us sitting on the bench together alone?'
Erin winces. 'Two teenagers sitting on the bench like a couple, or two teenagers behind the bushes, sending a different messages that doesn't look good for the both of us. Which one do you prefer?'
James nods. 'Good point.'
James gets up and the two walks to sit on the bench, keeping an eye on the choir group.
'Why do you care about what happens to Jenny Joyce or the choir group?' Erin asks curiously.
James takes a deep breath. 'It might be small but it could get worst later on.'
Erin winces in confusion. 'Worst than barking?'
James could only shrug. He observes each members of the group. 'You know whose in this group?'
Erin's nods as she sits up. 'Jenny Joyce and Aisling, we know who they are. The one in a plats is Kellie Pryler, she just joined in a week ago. The girl with red hair is Jody Kheeler, she's been doing it two years and Mandy Sampson is the one with short blonde hair and she's joined a year ago.'
James observing them.
Before they knew it, there was a snap of something breaking. The two looked and saw Aisling on the floor, with her wrist bending backwards. She is screaming in pain, unable to speak.
Erin and James quickly got off the bench and runs towards Aisling.
'What happened?' Erin asks in shock.
Jenny starts to stutter as she tries to explain. 'I-I don't kn-know. I-I just wanting to ex-explain the new plan f-for next week a-and Aisling ju-just on the floor-'
Aisling cries even more in pain, while Erin and James look at each other, like Erin is communicating him, saying you're right...
At the Library, James and Erin explained to Carter on what happened during assembly and outside of school.
Carter tilts his head forward and crosses his arms as he listens intensely. 'So her wrist just breaks for no reason?' The two nods. 'Sounds like witchcraft. It's only explanation to these activities.'
James eyes widen. 'Magic is real? Witches like Roald Dahl or that Shakespearean play with witches, or the one from Wizard of Oz. They're real?'
Carter nods. 'Just like vampires, magic is just as real.'
Erin looks at Carter. 'Why would anyone wants to embarrass or hurt them? I mean Jenny's irritating but Aisling not that bad.'
'I don't know.' Carter states. 'Getting Jenny Joyce to bark and breaking Aisling's wrist is amateur. I think we are dealing with someone who are just started to practice magic.'
'And using it on the choir group?' Erin asks confusingly.
Carter makes eye contact and shrugs, unable to answer it.
James tries to thinks of an answer of the reasoning of what happened. 'What if it's not against the group in general? What if it's just Jenny and Aisling?'
The two looked at James curiously.
Carter leans forward. 'Explain?'
James eyes widen, starts to stutter. 'We-well, y-you s-see-.'
James locks eyes with Erin, who is just as curious of what he has to say just like Carter. James starts to feel more confident from Erin, like she was giving him the strength by just looking at him.
'Well the wrist was more intentional and no one would go out their way to break a wrist out of humiliation. We actually don't have any other leads, but maybe it is inside the Choir Group itself? Maybe one of them got irritated or maybe someone outside who had it out against Jenny and Aisling.'
Carter lowers his head. 'Well it is a better theory than anything.' Carter looks to Erin. 'Keep an eye on on them and try and see anything that is suspicious. Carrying an old big book, talking about witchcraft, mentioning some strange stuff for ingredients, whispering Latin. Anything at all.'
Erin nods, as she takes mental notes of the information that Carter shared. James quickly turns to the exit doors.
'Oh, and James?' Erin calls out, catching his attention. 'Ummm… nicely done. Watch yourself, Ay?' She says awkwardly.
James looks at Erin, but decides to nod in acceptance. He figured that it's Erin's way of complimenting and also worried for him.
James is in the assembly hall, observing the Choir Groups rehearsing. He pretends to be busy by doing his homework, without giving any suggestion he was spying on them.
'What fecking reasons do we have to come?' Michelle objected, as she and the girls sit next to James, startling him in the process.
Claire turns to Michelle. 'Because someone broken their wrist Michelle. It could get worst later on.'
'Like what? Ripping Jenny's vocal chords?' Michelle said, sardonically.
James rolls his eyes at Michelle. 'How about death? This person might kill someone. She already broken a bone, there's no telling what she can do.'
'Or "he."' Orla says as she turns to James suspiciously. 'For all we know, you might've done it. You were there during both times.'
James looks at Orla, nervously. 'What? I-I would never do that! Why would I ever do that?'
'We don't know.' Orla says, as she leans forward to him. 'But I got my eye on you…'
James could only swallow, feeling his throat dry.
Michelle rolls her eyes in annoyance. 'This is bullshit. Nothing will happen, it's a waste of fucking time.'
Erin frowns at Michelle, disgusted by her attitude. 'I actually seen Aisling wrist bending backwards. She's going to be in a cast and the person doing this is going to do a lot worst if we don't look into this!'
'You mean you look into this, you mean?' Michelle snaps.
'What's that suppose to mean?'
'You know exactly what I mean.' She stands up towards James. 'Move out the way James!' She demands.
'The doors the opposite side though.' He points out.
Michelle groans and turns to the other way. Erin rolls her eyes in frustration while turning to the others.
'I'll be right back.'
Outside the assembly, Michelle pushes the doors hard as she storms off, followed by Erin.
'Michelle, what the hell is the problem?' Erin shouts in annoyance. 'Ever since you found out about me, you always seemed distant or something.'
Michelle doesn't respond as she tries to walk further away from the subject.
'Michelle, talk to me! I'm not a fucking mind reader, just tell me!'
Michelle stops and snaps back towards Erin. 'Oh! Mind reading not part of your "superpowers" is it?'
Erin eyes widen, like she realises something. 'Are you jealous?'
'Oh fuck off, Erin.'
'That's it isn't it?' Erin said, feeling rage in her stomach as she fights tears from coming out of her eyes. 'You think I asked for this? No one asks for this! "Poor Michelle, wasn't picked."'
'I'm not jealous!' Michelle shouts, startling Erin. Michelle calms down as she looks at Erin. 'I'm worried about ya.' She says quietly.
Erin looks at her with no response, waiting for Michelle to say something.
'You said "She alone faces the darkness" or whatever. You can't resign or there is no one else, just you. You said that the only way for a new slayer to be picked is when you die. Do you know how hard it is? Knowing your best friend is doing all this alone and I can't stop you?' Michelle's eyes starts to tear up. 'I hate this, more than anything. I kept trying to get you to stop, but you won't and I don't know what to do.'
Erin looks down, unable to stop the tears from coming out. 'That's why you were distant about it?'
Michelle nods. 'I'm sorry, it's just-.'
Erin quickly runs to Michelle and hugs her tightly, comforting her.
'I'm sorry, Michelle…'
They stayed there, not knowing how long the time went. It felt like minutes were hours but they hugged tightly, comforting each other.
Next thing they knew, they hear screams coming from the hall, as the two separated as quickly as they could.
Back in the hall, Erin and Michelle ran through to see Jenny's school blazer on fire. Jenny is struggling to take the blazer off, afraid of burning herself in the process.
James runs to Jenny and pulls her blazer off and slams it to the ground, stamping it with his foot as quickly as he could.
Claire turns to Erin and points through the fire exit. 'It's Jody Kheeler! She'd ran through there!'
Erin turns to Michelle, who returns with alook.
'Get that bitch.' Michelle responds, giving her a soft smile.
Erin turns to James.
'We got this Erin.'
The Slayer nods, as she quickly runs out towards the fire exit.
Erin runs out of the fire exit and looked around the field to find Jody, knowing she couldn't of gotten that far. She sees a girl with red hair running to the car park as fast as she could to get away.
Erin starts to run after her, with all the speed she can conjure to catch up. She manoeuvred past the other students and the teachers as fast as she could until finally she catches up with the witch.
'There's no way the run Jody!' She snaps.
Jody turns, while grinding her teeth with rage as she pulls out her hand to throw a fireball. Erin jumps to dodge out the way and lands on her knees, scrapping them in the process. Erin gets back on her feet and runs towards Jodie, tackling her.
The red head falls to the ground, screaming to be free.
'Get to fuck off me, Erin!' She screams. 'Get the fuck off me before I blow the face off!'
Erin sits up to pulls her arm up. Forming a fist, she forces down, landing a punch to Jody's face. Jody growls in frustration, as she uses her magic to push Erin off her. The Slayer falls on her back, scraping her again in the process.
'Just piss off Erin!' Jody growls as she gets to her feet. 'You don't need to be part of this!'
Erin, slowly gets up. Eyes fixed on the witch, furiously. 'And let you hurt someone? Catch yourself on!'
'You know how long I've been keeping myself quiet because of Jenny?' Jody spat out. '2 years! All those times, I gave all my ideas and she either takes them as her own, doesn't try to include me and leaves me on the sidelines! Jenny always thought she was someone special and I just can't take it!'
Erin winces with disgust. 'So you tried to burn her? And what about Aisling? You broke her wrist, for god sake!'
Jody looks away, uncomfortably. 'That was an accident. I tried to get to Jenny and I fucking screwed up the spell. But I am getting better. Once I find my book that I've left back at the hall, I am going to burn Jenny's eyes off until she can't see which part of Ireland she's at.'
Erin winces her nose, as she eyes locked to her threatening. 'And I will break your arm before you get a chance.'
Jody then proceeds to form another fireball. Unfortunately for Jody, the flames was crawling on her blazer to her arm. Jody then proceeds to slap her arm, to stop it from spreading more.
Erin seeing this, quickly runs towards Jody. 'Drop down and roll, Jody!'
Jody falls the the ground and rolls her arm up, but the fire was spreading further and further. Screaming and unable to stop the spreading, the fire went up her neck, burning her body in the process.
Erin takes off her blazer and slams it down to Jody, trying to stop the fire spreading even more.
'Someone! Anyone! Call an ambulance now!' Erin screams out loud, praying that anyone can help her.
At Carter's house, the group were all sitting down in the living room, as Carter walks in after being on the phone for two hours.
'I just spoke to Sister Micheal. Jody has first degree burns and from her hand up to her upper part of the neck, damaging her vocal chords in the process. Some believed it was a bomb that caused it.' He turns to everyone curiously. 'So no one has found the book?'
The girls and James respond by shaking their heads.
Claire looks down in thought. 'You don't think anyone could've just picked it up or something?'
Carter looks up. 'That's a good question Miss Devlin. Unfortunately it could be anywhere in Derry, so all of us have to keep our eyes open and be patient.'
The group looks amongst each other, worried about who would have the book.
At Erin and Orla's house, Orla walks into bedroom with her school bag, quietly as she quickly pulls out an old black book. The book that everyone was looking for. The book that caused so much damage. Orla looks at it curiously as she softly smiles whilst rubbing her hand on the cover. Orla quickly turns the pages as she observes the words that is written in it.
Erin, Michelle and James are both walking in the woods alone. Erin decided to patrol tonight and James and Michelle decided to accompany her.
'You two don't have to come tonight.' Erin said gratefully.
'Oh, aye!' Michelle says sarcastically. 'And have you have all the fun, while I'm stuck with my dickhead cousin here.'
James rolls his eyes. 'And here's that word again.' He responded, hating that word by the minute.
'And besides, I wasn't supportive before and I want to make it up to ya. No more running away and making excuses. Vampires of demons got nothing on us!' Michelle smiles as she wraps her arm over Erin shoulder. 'And besides, if all else fails we can stick James in front of the monsters.'
James turns to Michelle. 'Oh, thanks for that! Put me in the firing lines, why don't you?'
'Well England took on everything else, why not take one for the team?' Michelle teases.
Erin stops in her tracks, lifting her finger up to tell the two to be quiet. 'Do you hear that?'
James leans forward to hear clearly. 'No.'
Michelle crosses her and with a smirk. 'Whatever it is, James can go first.'
'Are you serious?' James objected.
Erin turns to the group, shushing them.
The three remained quiet, hearing a man shouting.
'Why did you bring me here?' A man said with an American accent. 'I can't be here. Anywhere but here!'
Another American accent but more childlike and feminine voice spoke. 'You wanted a reason. You spent centuries alone and this is your chance to find and redeem yourself.'
The three followed the voice, quietly not to disturbed the argument.
'But not here! I need to go back, I can't be near people.'
The three hide behind a corner and see a scruffy, homeless man with long hair talking to a young girl with blue t-shirt and pink hoodie. The girl has a pony tail and eyes that shows maturity.
'You won't be able to find yourself by running.' The girl argued.
The man grits his teeth. 'You will get me back to Los Angeles.'
The girl smiles pleasantly. 'And have you eating out the trash? That's a perfect life for you, isn't it?'
The man grabs her. 'You will take me back!'
Erin jumps out, grabs the man by the shoulders and pulls him away from the girl. The man flies to the ground. He slowly gets up and looks at Erin curiously.
Erin arms crosses as her eyes are locked to the man. 'Want to try that with someone a wee bigger?'
The man gets up in frustration. 'You don't know what you're getting yourself into. Just get out of my way and we'll be gone.'
Erin looks at the corner of her eye, like she was in thought. 'How about no?'
Michelle and James run out towards the little girl, with James kneeling down to her.
'You okay?' He asks gently.
The girl nods. 'I'm fine, but this is a big misunderstanding.'
Michelle looks at the man with disgust. 'Oh aye. A grown up attacking a wain, there's must be an explanation.'
The man looks back at the child. 'That is not really a child. Now get out of my way and I can deal with her.'
The man proceeds to try and walk past Erin, but she blocks him from passing.
'You want her, you go through me, arsehole.' Erin growls in disgust.
The man looks at Erin in frustration. He lowers his head, decides that he had enough of arguing with Erin and looks back at her with his vamp face.
'You asked for it.' The man responds.
The vampire back hands the Slayer across the face, sending her flying. Deciding not to hurt the teen any further, he decides to walk towards the girl.
James turns to Michelle. 'Look after her.' He demanded.
James quickly gets up and walks towards to man, decided to swing a punch that anyone can see coming. The vampire leans backwards and forwards, grabs the boy by the shoulders and pushes him forward towards Michelle and the girl.
James falls to the ground next to Michelle's feet, as the two girls look at him with disappointment.
'You showed him, didn't you, James?' Michelle responds sarcastically.
Erin quickly gets up and runs towards the man.
The girl looks at the two, upset. 'Please, stop!' She screams. 'Just stop and listen to me!'
Erin runs in front of the man, left kicking him in the rib, and right kicks him in the jaw. The man responds the kick by exchanging her the blow to the face. The man tries to go for a left punch, but Erin dodges and and gave right jabs to the face.
The girl's eyes turn white, as she gets more emotional. 'Please stop!' She screams as a strong force of wind blows out of her, sending everyone flying.
The girls eyes turns to normal as she looks at the scene, finding James slowly getting up with Michelle still lying on the floor.
'What the hell was that?' James shouts, shocked by the girls power.
Erin eyes slowly open, as she rubs her forehead. She slowly gets up as she turns to James. 'How's Michelle?' She asks worryingly.
James looks around and quickly reaches to Michelle, seeing if she's awake.
'Michelle, you awake?'
Michelle groans as she turns to the side.
'I'm fine, just give me a second.' She whispers in pain.
The girl cries as she looks at Erin.
'Please. Don't fight. Just help him.'
Erin eyes widen, confused to the girls plea.
'Why?' She asks. 'Do you know who he is?'
The girl nods. 'I do, but he's different. He has a soul, I can see something special in him.' The girl turns to the man's unconscious body. 'Please help him. He needs your help Miss Quinn.'
So the Derry Girls finally met Angel. Quite a rough start, but this is his beginning from how he starts his journey before meeting Buffy and proceeds to truly redeem himself.
I also created another character. She is someone important to the story and is the one that brought Angel to Derry in the first place, but why is she there? What's her motive?
I also made James a bit more confident in this chapter, decided to make him take a bit more action role despite not having any fighting experience.
And Orla is learning magic. I always pictured her to be the "witch" of the group with her eccentric personality...
How do you like Michelle and Erin's interaction? I had this idea that Michelle would be worried for her best friend and unable to feel helpless but wanting to be there for her at the same time. I think it's the reaction most of us will react in her shoes and want to show that Michelle will be there for Erin despite those circumstances.
Cassie-011: Thank you so much, I'm glad you're loving this story. I hope you enjoy the more chapters that are coming!
Randyzoopurple: I actually really like those theories. Never really thought of those to be honest.
Hope you're all ready for chapter 5! X
